♥ THE ART OF LOVE Joel Bagnal, Goldsmith by Lori King-Kocsis

“My great pleasure is the marking of special occasions with my clients. We brainstorm and sketch ideas that can only spark from the creative collaboration of craftsman and patron. And then I bring those visions into the reality of precious metals and gems. It doesn’t get much better than that. “ ~Joel Bagnal, Goldsmith Entering the quaint workshop which doubles as a storefront on historic Aviles Street in St. Augsutine, one finds exquisite works of art made of sterling silver and real gold beneath the glass cases. Each piece is unique unto itself and was created by the Master Jeweler who owns the shop, Joel Bagnal. Bagnal has been bringing quality craftsmanship to St. Augustine’s locals and visitors since 2001.

was commissioned to create a Mace for Cedar Crest College as the gift of the senior class of ‘73 to honor the faculty. The ceremonial academic mace was made in silver and rosewood during over 300 hours of work at his bench.

It all began with his love of design and art. Bagnal graduated from Stetson University with a Major in Art. Stetson was followed by a Master of Education from Boston University and a Master of Fine Arts in Metalsmithing from the University of Georgia. It was after Bagnal received the National Endownment for the Arts Craftsmen’s Grant, at Cedar Crest College, Allentown, PA., that he left teaching and opened his first shop in Wellesley, MA in 1978. He began offering distinctively handmade designs in gold and silver, commemorating marriages, partnerships, and any special occasion or relationship with collaboratively designed objects of adornment.

“The design chemistry between jewelry designer and client is the creative breath that brings the piece to life. With PDFs and JPEGs, I routinely scan my color originals and email them anywhere. So, with the combination of a very old discipline and very new technology, we are not bound by geography.” Bagnal provides progress shots of each stage of the creative process provided to the client and expert advice in diamonds and gemstones. Joel Bagnal is at heart an artist with an eye for beauty, depth and history. Just like the stunning landscapes and photography by local artists that adorn the walls of his shop/workshop, his art is representative of something unique and special that has evolved in St. Augustine over many years, and is a gift to our community.

A Business is Born

Romeo, Romeo….

A Collaborative Approach

What are Joel’s most romantic or favorite pieces? He couldn’t say just one individual piece. The pieces he enjoys the most are wedding rings. Working with clients to custom design their wedding rings has become his specialty. It’s no wonder that wedding rings are Bagnal’s specialty. He recalls a romantic story about the first time he met his wife-to-be, Nancy “Hookey” Hamilton, a prominent St. Augustine photographer. He was staying in an apartment in Old Town when, one night, as he sat on his balcony enjoying a nightcap, a woman appeared directly across from him, on her balcony. Conversation ensued and the rest is history.

LORI KING-KOCSIS

Meet Our New Team Member Social Media Consultant and Account Executive for St. Johns Magazine by Debbie Gaylord Lori King-Kocsis has led an interesting life beginning with growing up on a maple syrup farm in upstate New York with a gaggle of siblings where she learned that it takes 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup. There is little that is typical about this woman who’s dynamic career path reflects a spirit of adventure combined with a desire to promote others. A few years back, Lori left the “comfort” of corporate America and all that it implies to follow her dreams. After a twenty-five year career in corporate, small business, and not-for-profits, change was due. Lori and her husband Paul, an artist and singer/ songwriter, along with two of their four children and the family beagle, Benjamin (who has an Instagram account) spent the last two years traveling across the country in a 1979 Airstream. They went to some fantastic places, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time in northern California and met some amazing people along the way. They are currently writing a book about the adventure and what they learned through the experience.

20

In California, Lori was able to spend time in unusual but creative endeavors that had always been on her bucket list. Over the years, she performed in a number of major movies and last year she was an extra for Silicon Valley (HBO) and the movie San Andres (with “The Rock”). She also worked at a winery in the tasting room, something she always wanted to experience. She learned how to identify those elusive notes in a wine, like chocolate, cola, lavender. This year Lori and Paul decided to return east and chose the First Coast as the perfect location. Most of their family is on the east coast and they wanted to be closer to them. The arts community in St. Augustine as well as proximity to the beach and natural beauty of the area were also contributing factors. She is looking forward to working with locally owned small businesses in St. Johns who are making a difference in our economy. Lori’ is an expert in the areas of marketing, business development, communication, and social media engagement and is known as a great connector who loves meeting people and learning about them. Her goal is to help business owners get started on those basics, to help them with

a marketing plan that works for them and to use these tactics to bring them more business.

LORI’S ADVICE TO BUSINESS OWNERS ABOUT STARTING A SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN. 1. Figure out which platform will work best for your business. Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In, E-Newsletters, Instagram, Pinterest 2. Stay current with trends. Start with the basics that work for your business. 3. Get the basics in place. Though new technology is constantly evolving, many business owners don’t have the basics in place yet. It can be a struggle just working on your day to day work, adding another element like social media to the mix can be overwhelming. 4. Be consistent and stay true to your brand.

St. Augustine Beach Seaside Wildlife Garden Wins Statewide Award

Transforming a weed infested area overrun with trash and debris is nothing new for the St. Johns County (SJC) Master Gardeners. Winning a state-wide award for their effort elevates that experience to an entirely new level. That is exactly what happened this year when the State was handing out awards for a beautification and enhancement project. The SJC Master Gardeners won top prize for their Seaside Wildlife Garden, located just south of the St. Augustine Beach Pier, St. Augustine Beach, Florida. On Tuesday, January 19, 2016, St. Johns County Board of Commissioners presented the Master Gardeners a Proclamation to celebrate winning this prestigious, competitive award. In doing so, they recognized that this county has a large resource of professional Master Gardeners who know how to turn an idea into reality. Seaside Wildlife Garden officially welcomed butterflies and hummingbirds, along with beachgoers, in November 2014 with a dedication ceremony that celebrated the all-volunteer effort that created this beach haven. Today yoga classes meet in the garden as well as locals who stop by to watch the butterflies, read a book or simply enjoy a quiet place of refuge. Spearheading the project was Master Gardener CJ McCartney, who said, “What a great time to be a Master Gardener. This exciting project was all about collaboration, camaraderie and cooperation where so many smart and talented Master Gardeners stepped up to make a real difference in their community. Everyone brought their best to make this project a success. Over 30 volunteers showed up

22

to help in a variety of ways - from building trellises out of recycled pallets to hauling materials and mulch to digging plants out of their yard. Some weeded and cleared the beds while others prepped and mulched the soil. Always open to learning new skills, Master Gardeners sanded and stained benches and pallets while others pressure washed the grime off the concrete. Most of the donated or propagated plants were Florida natives and are salt tolerant plants that attract hummingbirds and butterflies, like the Maypop passion vine and coral honeysuckle that cover the trellises so the Zebra Longwing and Gulf Fritillary Butterflies have a new nesting home. The following Master Gardeners who created, installed and maintained this wildlife garden are CJ McCartney, Lynda Eidson, Pam Mirelson, Robert Mirelson, Ginna Allmond, Giselle Thompson, Nana Royer, Nancy Henley, Shirley Barber, Sharon McIlhenney, Rosemary Holmquist, Rosemary Baldwin, Michelle Wiles, Kathy Luoma, Betsy McCoy, Sylvia Brunet, Karen Matulina, CJ Jacobs, Renee Stambaugh, Gayle Prevatt, Gloria Hopkins and Tammy Burkhardt. Horticultural agent Keith Fuller advised and supported the group throughout the project and encouraged them to pursue this prestigious state-wide award. St. Johns County UF/IFAS Master Gardeners is a volunteer-driven program that benefits the citizens of Florida. It relies on dedicated volunteers who have an interest in gardening and in giving back to their communities. UF/IFAS is an acronym for University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

MEET DR. FAULL

Dr. Rosann W. Faull, Au.D, CCC-A Board Certified Doctor of Audiology

Dr. Rosann Faull’s great-grandmother had significant hearing loss and wore hearing aids. This was during the 60’s and 70’s and her experience with old technology was the catalyst for Dr. Faull to study Audiology in college. She wanted to help people hear better and maintain a high quality of life. Dr. Faull started her career by working with Ear, Nose and Throat physicians and was Director of Audiology at University of Missouri Medical School Hospital. She specialized in diagnostic evaluation of hearing loss, balance evaluation and hearing aid evaluations for children and adults, and provided audiology training to medical residents. In 1983 she began her private practice in Melbourne, Florida. While there, in addition to her regular hearing-loss patients, she established newborn and infant hearing screening programs at two hospitals. In 2009 she and her husband Art Faull moved to the First Coast and started a private practice in the Mandarin area of Jacksonville. “For me, the most rewarding part of audiology is helping people get the most from their hearing with advanced hearing technologies. I provide diagnostic hearing evaluations, hearing aid evaluations, prescribing and fitting hearing aids, and tinnitus evaluations and tinnitus relief. I work with many manufactures to as-

sure the best solution for my patient’s hearing health.” Dr. Leslie Newmeyer recenly joined the practice. Both Dr. Faull and Dr. Newmeyer are Doctors of Audiology with 35 + years of experience. Dr. Faull and Dr. Newmeyer strive to help patients improve their hearing so they remain engaged in life. According to Dr. Faull, “Recent research has proven that improving your hearing through advanced hearing instruments preserves and decreases cognitive decline. Unfortunately, the most common hearing loss in adults – sensori-neural or nerve hearing loss cannot be corrected with surgery or medicine, only appropriately prescribed and fitted hearing instruments can help”. When Dr. Faull is not at her Mandarin office helping patients, she enjoys traveling. She and her husband are avid bicyclists and their vacations often are weeks-long excursions on bicycle trails nationwide. In recent years they rode from Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh PA and the Virginia Creeper Trail. They have also traveled to Machu Picchu, Peru and spent 3 years living on their sailboat from 1999 -2001. Oscar & the Rejoicing…

Dr. Peter Veling is the owner of Palencia Pet Clinic www.palenciapetclinic.com Dr. Peter Veling is the owner of Palencia Pet Clinic www.palenciapetclinic.com

by Dr. Peter Veling We got a call one Monday morning that Oscar, a Boston Terrier, needed to be examined. He was squinting. I had the first of that morning‘s three surgeries already started so Oscar had to wait until afternoon. When he came in his right eye was squinting shut, a sure sign of pain. There was a discharge of tears from the eye. He was still eating and drinking but we could see he was hurting. I took out a coloring agent, Fluorescein stain, which turns any udamaged part of the clear part of the eye, or cornea, green. After placing a drop of the stain onto Oscar’s cornea, there appeared a green spot on the cornea, identifying it as a corneal ulcer. This means that Oscar had probably accidentally run into something with his bulgey, or buphthalmic, eye. It doesn’t take much for a dog with buphthalmic eyes to scratch the surface of his eye. It can happen due to a careless turning of his head too close to an object and a scratch is present. The critical symptom is squinting. Getting a corneal ulcer to heal with a bulgey-eyed dog can be very tough because they frequently don’t close their eyes all the way, especially when they are sleeping. This leads to the cornea getting too little moisture and slow healing. We put Oscar onto pain medication and an antibiotic applied to the surface of his right eye. Oscar was not happy. I demonstrated how to apply these to Karen, Oscar’s owner and asked her to bring his back in a week. Karen and Oscar came back seven days later. His cornea still was Fluorescein stain positive. We added a different antibiotic. Oscar was giving Karen a hard time getting meds into his eye now. A week later, Oscar’s cornea was still ulcerated. I checked to see if his tear gland had stopped working. It still did. We tried adding a corneal moisturizing agent with the antibiotics. Seven days later the ulcer was still present. I applied a topical anesthetic to numb the eye. I took a 25 gauge needle and did a grid keratotomy. Medication was

continued. A week later the ulcer was still there. It was time for more drastic measures. I told Karen that Oscar needed to have his third eyelid sutured closed temporarily. The third eyelid is a structure at the inside corner of each eye that we don’t have. Closing the third eyelid across the cornea keeps the damaged cornea covered with tears at all times, allowing the corneal ulcer to heal. Karen agreed to have me do the surgery. The next day I did the surgery. Oscar kept on his Elizabethan collar and the sutures in place for two weeks. After two weeks I took out the sutures and stained the cornea. One of the sutures did not look right after it was removed. The ulcer was healed. But Oscar was still squinting. I wondered to myself, could there be a piece of the suture under his lower eyelid? I opened his eye gently and saw a small piece of suture inside then lower eyelid. Oscar stopped squinting. After too many weeks, there was much rejoicing. Oscar’s corneal ulcer was finally healed.
