Discover African-American History in St. Augustine by Jennifer Yarbrough Photo compliments of the Fort Mose Historical Society

Did you know that before Harriet Tub-

the Mose Story 6:00pm-7:30pm

was one that came south to St. Augustine? Or that Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested in St. Augustine?

This month across the United States

we celebrate Black History Month, a chance to recognize the central role of African Americans in U.S. History. This is the perfect time to take a trip to St. Augustine and learn the history of African Americans in our Nation’s Oldest City. Several landmarks and museums can help you discover the rich history and contributions of the men and women of our community.

Fort Mose

A century before slaves fled to the

Northern States for freedom, many fled south to Spanish-held St. Augustine to escape their owners. In 1738, Gracia Real de Santa Theresa de Mose, the first free community of ex-slaves was established just two miles north of the Castillo de San Marcos. This community, made up of former slaves, served as the northernmost defense for the city of St. Augustine. While time and nature have washed the physical settlement into the marsh, you can visit a very informative museum at the site.

In addition to their regular hours of

operation, Fort Mose will have two special presentations in February.

The Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center is located in the historic St. Augustine neighborhood of Lincolnville. Lincolnville was established in 1866 by freedmen and has grown and evolved over the years, surviving many social and cultural changes in St. Augustine. The museum itself is housed in the former Excelsior School, a building with its own long history. At the museum you will learn about the history of African Americans in St. Augustine. Displays tell the story of Fort Mose, the development of Lincolnville, Education at Excelsior School, and the Civil Rights Movement in St. Augustine. The Museum is located at 102 Martin Luther King Ave., an avenue named after Martin Luther King, Jr. in honor of the demonstrations that he held on that very street. Learn about Dr. King’s trips to the old city that helped get the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed. The Museum is open Wednesday thru Friday 12:30pm to 4:30pm.

The Benefits of Infrared Sauna Pain relief, weight loss, blood pressure, circulation, skin purification, wound healing, cell health, are all benefited by infrared sauna.

When Massage Green in Julington Creek al-

lowed me to be one of the first to try their new Infrared Sauna I jumped at the chance. I had a long week of work, which involves sitting at my desk in front of my computer for hours. This posture has created a permanent kink in my scapula area and the back of my neck. I was really looking forward to trying out the sauna to see if it would help.

Have you ever heard of an infrared sauna?

Saunas have been around for centuries, used in Finland and Mexico for health purposes but traditional saunas use steam from hot coals to heat up body temperature. An infrared sauna is similar but different.

According to the sauna’s manufacturer, Sun-

lighten©, the concept is simple, “sweating is good for you. It is the body’s safe and natural way to heal & stay healthy. Infrared sauna benefits the body by heating it directly causing a rise in core temperature resulting in a deep, detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, where toxins reside”.

After my amazing full body one-hour massage

with Joyce, Brian, the owner at Massage Green, was kind enough to teach me about the sauna, which is equipped with user friendly digital settings. You enter the sauna sit down and decide which experience you would like based on your personal needs. There are vairous settings including relaxation, weight loss, detox, circulation, blood pressure.

The rays sent through are based on what you de-

sire, using full-spectrum near, mid or far rays. Using the touch screen control panel I decided on the “relaxation mode”.

As soon as the timer began I felt drowsy and began

to go into deep state of relaxation, which was fantastic. My

16

limbs felt heavy and my mind grew calmer as my body relaxed. The interior of the sauna is made of a comfortable bamboo material, so I spread out the towel and laid down for a nap. Thirty minutes later, I opened my eyes naturally. According to Brian, the reason for this is the sauna waves were essentially slowing and the body naturally responds, taking you gently from relaxation to waking.

During my sauna, I was able feel my scapula ten-

sion truly release. The relaxation mode combined with my full body massage to continue its work and really provide healing benefits on a deeper level.

There was a nice pitcher of water and a glass on

the table for drinking after the sauna as it is important to replenish fluids. The next day I noticed I needed many trips to the ladies room, which I attribute to my body releasing toxins even after the sauna is over.

Overall it was a great experience and I will defin-

tely return. But next time I'll try the weight loss setting. I learned that an infrared sauna session can burn upwards of 600 calories while you relax! Yes- please!

The "Lawn Guy Lander" Yofrodipity Cafe Gets a Makeover & New Menu to Celebrate 4 Years in Business! This Spring a community favorite, Yofrodipity Café on CR 210 is celebrating four years in business! In looking toward the future, owner Lynn Hutzel has decided to reinvent her concept from self-serve yogurt establishment into Yofrodipity Café, offering much more than just frozen yogurt. Grilled cheese sandwiches, espresso drinks, crepes and other desserts will expand the menu while a new décor with nautical blues, anchors and nets conjures up Long Island. You will often see Lynn working behind the counter at Yofrodipity Café. She is the one with a friendly smile and strong Long Island accent who takes your order and wishes you a good day. As the owner, she understands customer service that goes beyond average. Lynn and her husband Edward moved to St. Johns from Huntington, New York on Long Island twelve years ago. It was where they grew up, spending summers going to the beach, clamming and enjoying life. Over time Long Island became crowded and expensive and after hearing about St. Johns from a friend who had moved, the couple decided to sell their home and move to Florida. It was a big change but they have loved living here and bringing up their children, who at the time were only 13 and 9. In 2013 Lynn came up with the idea of Yofrodipity, a place where families could come to make their own yogurt

18

sundaes. The name Yofrodipity was inspired by Lynn’s favorite film, Serendipity with Kate Beckensale and John Cusak. It’s a love story about two people whose paths cross at a chance encounter and then years later reunite in a serendipitous moment. In a kind of serendipity, it felt like owning her own restaurant was the perfect next step for Lynn who worked as the Food Service Manager at both Bartram Trail High and Cunningham Creek Elementary over the years (she is still at Cunningham today). She always dreamed of opening her own place in the community and now that her kids were older she had the time to focus on it. For the past four years Yofrodipity has happily been serving frozen yogurt but more recently Lynn began to expand the menu, introducing crepes and coffee. Now another big change is in the works. While they will still serve frozen yogurt, they will add a variety of gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, similar to paninis with fun names based on nostalgic places from Long Island. Why Long Island? After hearing their thick Long Island accent, people are always asking her and Edward, “Where are you from?” So, Lynn decided to bring something of her roots into play in their new menu and the nautical décor and color scheme is also part of this shift.

The sandwiches have names like, and “The Brooklyn (Its Not LI)” “The Fire Island” “The Hamptons”. Maybe you’ll be in the mood for something unusual like the “The Plum Gut - Known as the most dangerous navigational waters on earth, so is the dessert grilled sandwich. It’s a smores on steroids. Peanut Butter, Nutella cream cheese, honey, bananas, marshmallows are sure to fill your gut.” Or something more traditional like the Lawn Guy Lander, described as “an all-American grilled cheese, made with sliced bread and American cheese, golden brown and gooey.” Yum! Sounds like these new sandwiches are going to blow your mind in terms of taste. The new Yofrodipity café is a special place for our community and neighbors should look forward to some truly delicious food coupled with a pleasant ambiance. Other exciting developments include live music on Friday and Saturday. Stay tuned for more information in the coming months!

Design Trend Watch: Infused with Nature by Crystal Spencer, Room by Room Interiors

Wrapping up our series on current home design trends we explore how nature, bringing the outdoors inside, will impact home design styles and decor in 2017. Our lives today are so busy and demanding that we inwardly crave sanctuary. Nature helps us find a sense rest and peace. Hearing trees rustling in the wind or seeing the crash of the waves on the sandy shore helps us unwind and unplug. The aim of the ‘infused with nature’ trend is to bring a feeling of calm into our homes and give us refuge. Green takes center stage this year in fashion and design. From dark emerald, to bright yellow-green, to pastel mint, home accents in green tones will be everywhere. Beyond the literal color, greenery such as faux succulents, trees and plants will be plentiful in home décor stores to help customers embrace the movement to bring the outside indoors.

20

Natural, raw-looking wood will continue to be popular this year for flooring, on walls and ceilings, in furniture, and home accents. Earthy, rustic, worn and muted surfaces and light colored wood in cabinetry will gain in popularity as well. Other elements of nature represented in home furnishings will be terra cotta tile, stone surfaces and stoneworked pottery. Stonewashed fabrics like denim and linen, suede, felt, natural woven fibers, and grasses will dominate textiles. Foliage patterns and prints will be seen on fabrics, furniture, wall paper and artwork. Tribal patterns with muted, earthy colors will abound; think modernized Moroccan, Moorish and Aztec patterns. Furnishings of metal and manmade materials take on a weathered-bynature look to fit the trend.

Continuing to trend are home design styles of Scandinavian, Mid-Century Modern, Farmhouse, Bohemian (Boho), and Coastal. These styles are being infused with colors and elements of nature along with clean-lines and simple geometric patterns. Décor items made with rough or raw wood, shells, rocks, plants, flowers, and natural fibers mix very nicely with each of these design styles. Complement your existing décor with nature-inspired elements. Place a tall plant in a lonely corner, toss a couple of natural fiber throw pillows on your sofa, or put some succulents in a bowl on your coffee table. Spring is just around the corner. It is the perfect time to infuse your home with nature and create a sanctuary of rest for you and your family. Love, peace, home!

Crystal says Farwell: I love the St. John's community! Alas, I am moving West for a new and grand adventure. It's been my honor and privilege to work with my neighbors in St. John’s over the past four years. I have enjoyed sharing decorating tips and ideas with you through articles published here in the St John's Magazine. And, I am grateful for the people I've met and friendships I have made along the way. It has been a fun and fruitful journey! Many thanks and blessings to you all.

5 Rules of Proper Fitness for Women

by MaryAnne Holtz Master Coach at SCULPTAFIT

There are so many fitness options on the market, it's often a confusing challenge for a woman to know exactly what type of program would be suitable for her needs and goals. From high-paced dance classes to high-intensity weight routines - the choices can be quite intimidating, to say the least. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The key is for women to know what elements to look for when considering fitness and weight-loss options. These 5 rules will help any woman in her search for a proper fitness approach to, getting in shape, regaining her health and reversing premature aging.

Rule #1 Your Fitness Program Must Be Gentle A painful and uncomfortable fitness program makes you want to avoid it. Avoiding it puts you back at square one. So the key is to look for a gentle approach, because a gentle program makes you want to do it and stay with it.

Rule #2 Your Fitness Program Must Be SAFE A risky fitness program puts you in danger of injury, which is not ideal for long term success. A safe exercise program paves the path for long term success, by helping you avoid the setbacks that come with risky and dangerous programs.

Rule #3 Your Fitness Program Must Be FUN 22

Even adults want to have fun. And when something is fun, it exponentially increases our desire to do it.

A fun approach to fitness and exercise makes it easy to develop the positive habit into a natural part of your lifestyle.

Rule #4 Your Fitness Program Must Be ENJOYABLE Humans LOVE enjoyment. We look forward to things that are enjoyable. A high-quality fitness program that is enjoyable is one worth doing because you’ll have the desire to return again and again. This breeds consistency and that is what keeps the improvements coming.

Rule #5 Your Fitness Program Must Be EFFECTIVE You want results and you deserve them. But only an effective program will deliver the results you desire. The key here is to seek out a program based on a method designed to safely deliver results both in the short-term and the long-term. Continued positive results will fuel your desire to never go back to the “old ways” again. By following the 5 simple rules above, any woman can set herself up for levels fitness success that will improve her health, quality of life and physical appearance. Local & Family-owned Breakfast Joints

Oh My Goodness - Are your Hungry yet?

They say the best way to start your day is with a good breakfast. Well mostof

It’s Heart Month Eat Heart Healthy by Nancy Cohen, RDN, LDN Feeding The Body Feeding The Soul LLC St. Augustine, 904-687-0720 www.feedingthebodyfeedingthesoul.com

February is Heart Month. What a wonderful reminder to take care of your heart and it’s nutrition. Let’s look at the American Heart Association's Diet and Lifestyle Recommendations as goals for a heart healthy food plan. A healthy diet and lifestyle are your best weapons to fight cardiovascular disease. It’s not as hard as you may think! Remember, it's the overall pattern of your choices that counts. Make the simple steps below part of your life for long-term benefits to your health and your heart. ♥Use up at least as many calories as you take in. ♥Eat a variety of nutritious foods from all the food groups. You may be eating plenty of food, but your body may not be getting the nutrients it needs to be healthy. Nutrient-rich foods have minerals, protein, whole grains and other nutrients but are lower in calories. They may help you control your weight, cholesterol and blood pressure. ♥Eat an overall healthy dietary pattern that emphasizes: Limit saturated fat, trans fat, sodium, red meat, sweets and sugar-sweetened beverages. One of the diets that fits this pattern is the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) eating plan. Most healthy eating patterns can be adapted based on calorie requirements and personal and cultural food preferences. ♥Eat less of the nutrient-poor foods. The right number of calories to eat each day is based on your age and physical activ-

ity level and whether you're trying to gain, lose or maintain your weight. You could use your daily allotment of calories on a few high-calorie foods and beverages, but you probably wouldn’t get the nutrients your body needs to be healthy. Limit foods and beverages high in calories but low in nutrients. Also limit the amount of saturated fat, trans fat and sodium you eat. Read Nutrition Facts labels carefully — the Nutrition Facts panel tells you the amount of healthy and unhealthy nutrients in a food or beverage. ♥Cut back on beverages and foods with added sugars. ♥Choose foods with less sodium and prepare foods with little or no salt. To lower blood pressure, aim to eat no more than 2,400 milligrams of sodium per day. Reducing daily intake to 1,500 mg is desirable because it can lower blood pressure even further. If you can’t meet these goals right now, even reducing sodium intake by 1,000 mg per day can benefit blood pressure. ♥If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation. That means no more than one drink per day if you’re a woman and no more than two drinks per day if you’re a man. ♥Don’t smoke tobacco — and avoid secondhand smoke. A Message From The Vet

With Dr. Kathleen Deckard, DVM Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital

Home Dental Care for Pets

February is National Pet Dental Month and now is the time to take charge of your pet’s dental health. Many pets are already in great need of a professional dental cleaning so I recommend starting by making an appointment with your veterinarian to discuss whether your pet should have a dental cleaning. With their help, then decide on what home care works best for you. Keep in mind that despite what you do, your pet will still need regular dental cleanings, however, your efforts should delay the need for cleanings, keep your pet’s breath fresher and also help prevent tooth loss associated with advanced dental disease. Tooth Brushing: Brushing your dog’s teeth is the single most effective means to maintain oral health. This makes sense because the bacterial film known as “plaque” is the cause of periodontal disease and the film is easily disrupted by the simple mechanical effect of brushing the teeth. Frequent (ideally daily)

brushing is recommended to maintain optimal dental health. You can use a pet toothbrush or a finger brush. You should only use pet specific toothpastes. Dental Wipes: The next best way to contact all teeth with something abrasive would be to use dental wipes. They are rubbed daily on the outside of the teeth to remove plaque. Chlorhexidine Oral Rinse and Gel: Chlorhexidine is the most effective anti-plaque antiseptic. Chlorhexidine binds to the oral tissues and tooth surfaces, and is gradually released into the oral cavity. The rinse is applied by squirting a small amount inside the cheek on each side of the mouth. The gel is applied by smearing it onto the teeth. Dental Diets: Dental diets have been shown to be of benefit in decreasing dental disease. Some employ a specific kibble design to mechanically remove tartar and others include an anti-tartar ingredient on the surface of the kibble. Dental Chews: There are many dental chews available with ingredients that combat plaque. These chews need to be given daily to

have a benefit. Pets should be monitored while chewing a chew treat or toy, as they may swallow large pieces, leading to a variety of digestive system disorders. We do not recommend cow hooves, dried natural bones or hard nylon products because they are too hard and are associated with broken teeth or damaged gums. Great Resource: The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) Seal of Acceptance is awarded to home oral hygiene products that meet or exceed the VOHC standard for retarding accumulation of dental plaque or dental tartar. A complete listing of products that have been granted the VOHC Seal of Acceptance is available at www.VOHC.org. Contact your veterinarian for help on taking charge of your pet’s dental care. This will help relieve oral pain you may not be aware of, will give your pet the kissable breath that you’ve always wanted and allow for a lifetime of better oral health.
