HOW PERSONAL TRAINING TURNED ONE WOMAN’S LACK OF MOTIVATION INTO A WELLNESS TRANSFORMATION Tim Burrows Director of Healthy Living Innovations: Impact & Achievement
We know we could all use a little encouragement, motivation and support to stay focused on our goals. At the Flagler Center YMCA, we know how important a support system can be, and we are here to help you every step of the way. A great way to get started is with 1-on-1 Personal Training (PT)! Working out with a Certified Personal Trainer at any First Coast YMCA is a great way to keep you accountable, healthy and motivated. PT is for everyone regardless of age or fitness level. For Rebeca Aguilera, a First Coast YMCA member, teaming up with a personal trainer was transformational, especially since she admits that she hated working out. Her initial goal was to reduce body fat, lower her high blood pressure and lose 20 pounds. But Rebeca’s trainer helped her exceed expectations. “When I saw the difference of how well I felt and looked…I kept progressing until I got to 35 pounds. I hated going to the gym so I really wasn’t going to push myself at all but he continued to push me because he knew I could do better. So now when I work out by myself I always hear him in the back of my heading saying, ‘You can do it. Go. Go. Go.’ It’s great motivation.” According to the American Council on Exercise, these are the top five reasons to hire a personal trainer:
1. MOTIVATION
Personal trainers wear many hats, serv-
ing not only as coach, but as an educator, confidant, role model and a major source of motivation and encouragement as well.
8
2. CONSISTENCY
Scheduling regular appointments with a personal trainer helps eliminate any excuses you might come up with for not exercising.
3. SAFETY A personal trainer will show you how to exercise safely (including which exercises to avoid) and instruct you on the proper and safe use of exercise equipment.
4. INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION What works for one person, may not work for another when it comes to choosing an exercise program. A personal trainer will develop the most effective program for you based on your fitness evaluation results and personal goals. Beginners in particular benefit from instruction on how to perform specific exercises and program planning.
5. EFFECTIVE WORKOUTS Personal trainers help maximize your time by providing workouts designed to meet your goals quickly and efficiently. At the Y, we want to support you in your endeavors to achieve both your short and long term goals by connecting you with the resources and tools to do so. Learn more about all of our wellness programs and services by visiting FirstCoastYMCA.org. You can also watch how other members achieved their goals by visiting FirstCoastYMCA.org/realstories.

Trouble Hearing? Make Better Hearing Your 2016 Resolution!
With the beginning of 2016, it’s time to look again at our lifestyles and make resolutions for improved health and well-being. This is the perfect time to take stock of where in our lives we could use a little “tweaking” for improvement. Hearing well can have a positive impact on many aspects of our lives including more social interactions, improved memory health, and better understanding in noisy situations. Just look at the research. Hearing care is health care. Hearing health has been and continues to be studied by several prestigious institutions. Allow me to explain the results from The National Council on Aging and John Hopkins University.
by Dr. Rosann W. Faull, Au.D, CCC-A Board Certified Doctor of Audiology
with untreated hearing impairment becomes tired, embarrassed and stops asking people to repeat what has been said. They sit alone, without talking to family and friends. Isolation is a leading risk factor for dementia. Hearing is one of our 5 major senses. Regard and take care of your hearing like you do your eyes, heart, lungs, etc. Get a complete diagnostic hearing evaluation. Make better hearing your New Year’s Resolution. Keep in touch with friends and family and continue to live the active lifestyle you always have. If hearing technology is the answer, there are good choices from the right hearing health care professional. Please contact my office if you have any questions.
In 1999, the National Council on Aging studied how hearing impairment affects social interaction and mental health. Specifically, they found that people who improved their hearing with hearing aids were more socially active and had better relationship with their families. In 2011 Dr. Frank Linn, Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at John Hopkins University published a 20 years study. His results show that the risk of dementia increases as the severity of hearing impairment increases. The risk of dementia doubled with a mild hearing loss and there is a 5 fold increase risk of dementia with a severe hearing impairment. I believe these studies come to the same conclusions. That is, if you cannot hear speech clearly and understand it, you cannot remember it. Memory loss is the first step to dementia. Also, untreated hearing impairment causes isolation. An individual

MASSAGE A Healthy way to Treat Your Body
3 Common Types of Massage Therapy SWEDISH MASSAGE The most common and best-known type of massage in the United States. Swedish massage incorporates long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. The purpose of a Swedish massage is to relax the entire body, but it also has many other benefits: ● Improved blood circulation with increased levels of oxygen in the blood ● Mental and physical relaxation ● Improved range of motion and flexibility
Similar to Swedish Massage but the deeper pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus of a deep tissue massage is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints). Some benefits of deep tissue massage therapy are: ● Reduction of chronic pain ● Can help break up and eventually erase scar tissue ● Reduction of stress and mood boosting
SPORTS MASSAGE Sports massage focuses on areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive and often aggressive movements.

More than a treatment for injuries, sports massage produces overwhelming benefits for athletes physically, physiologically, and psychologically. For anyone participating in regular physical activity, sports massage therapy every week or two may be a great addition to your normal regimen. Sports massage therapy can be beneficial in many different ways. These benefits are increased substantially by receiving consistent regular massage therapy. With regular massage therapy you are able to actively combat the negative influences inflicted on your body that are a part of our daily lives. While the majority of clients who frequently receive massage therapy do so because they are experiencing pain in one form or another, there are more subtle effects of massage such as increased circulation and a stronger immune system. Many clients see a massage therapist to help with daily stress as well that while not necessarily causing them physical pain weighs heavily on their mind. Massage therapy is also completely appropriate for young adults and teenagers who are involved with sports and wellness.
Ar
Massage therapy has numerous physical and psychological benefits for your body and mind. Some physical benefits include reduction in muscle pain and tension, alleviates discomfort during pregnancy, and provides greater joint flexibility and range of motion. Psychological benefits of massage are reduction in stress, anxiety, or just feeling more comfortable in a very general sense. Massage therapy should be a part of your own wellness plan due to the many benefits.

Try one or all of these uses Mandarin. Hoby’s Honey is locally procured by fourth generation beekeepers that have been in the business since 1946. Ryan Hoback for honey:
Treating coughs Honey can be given to adults and children alike who are suffering from coughs (as long as they are over one year of age). Look up dosages for particular ages.

will be happy to help you learn more about the natural and medicinal properties of raw honey, including ways to combat local allergies, help digestive issues and boost the immune system. In addition to honey, they sell skincare, honey related snacks and other items, including bee pollen itself. The store offers other goods and is reminiscent of a “general store.” Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30-6pm and Sunday-Monday, 10-3p.
Honey provides the sweetness of sugar, but with a more nutritional punch! Honey contains vitamins and minerals, including niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc, and other items that act as antioxidants. Search the web for recipes using honey in the place of sugar—there are plenty of them online.
To boost your energy Sugar, especially in coffee, helps a lot of us get through parts of the day where are energy may be waning, but honey is a better alternative to boost energy. Try a small amount of honey drizzled over nuts for a quick pick-me-up.
As skincare One might think that beauty products made with honey are just a novelty, but honey has many natural properties that can help your complexion—it’s naturally antibacterial, it contains antioxidants and helps skin lock in moisture. Look for products that contain honey or look up recipes on how to make your own.

Former Race Driver Trish Johnson & Her
Virtual Vehicle
by Debbie Gaylord
Teaching Driver Safety to the Next Generation
Trish Johnson Owner, Apex Resource Center
Trish Johnson has always been passionate about driving. After driving race cars for a living and later teaching Driver Education, Trish invented a driving simulator, The Apex Virtual Vehicle, and had it patented. Today she is the owner of Apex Resource Center in Jacksonville where she hopes to help today’s drivers learn all aspects of driving in a safe environment. As a kid her parents encouraged Trish and supported her dream of being the first woman to win the Indy 500 at a time when women weren’t even allowed in the pits at Indianapolis! She started racing at 9 years old, which she says wasn’t surprising since her mom says “Johnny Rutherford” were the first words she spoke! (He was a famous race driver at the time.) She recalls growing up on her parent’s farm, where she was always free to drive machinery and trucks around the property. Trish enjoyed a successful racing career including over 200 wins, championships and awards. “Women were not allowed in the pits when I started racing so I have always been a pioneer and I rarely competed against other women but I was fine with that, once you put on a helmet you’re just another racer and that is the way I always wanted to be treated.” Her racing coach Bertil Roos, taught her not only how to drive a race car fast but how to be safe on the road and later on how to use this knowledge and skill to teach others. According to Trish, racing allowed her to fulfill many of her dreams including meeting amazing people, one of the highlights was spending time with Paul Newman at a race. But all of that changed when she received the tragic news
that a young crew member had been killed in a highway crash, it caused her to reflect on whether she wanted to continue to pursue her dreams in racing or keep dreams alive for young people by preventing crashes. She became an educator with the local schools and also owned a driving school that offered traditional driver education classes and lessons but over the years felt she could do more to help young drivers. When the idea came to her to develop a simulator, Trish reached out to the racing community to build the Virtual Vehicle. “Improving both cognitive and physical skills, such as driving, requires deliberate practice and it’s my racing background that provides the knowledge of how best to achieve this”. The Virtual Vehicle is the only full-motion driving simulator in the country with advanced software that records, plays back and analyzes driving techniques and decisions. This approach provides tremendous feedback and hands on learning for new drivers. For example, instead of just talking about the dangers of texting and driving they experience them firsthand with no risk to themselves and others. The goal at Apex is to bridge the dangerous skill gap between a licensed driver and a safe driver to prevent crashes and save lives. Apex offers non-traditional, innovative driver training to supplement driver education programs along with coaching, guidance, products and services for teenagers, young adults, parents, families, and organizations. Sometimes Things Don’t Make Sense…

Sometimes Things Don’t Makes Sense…But they should most of the time. Remember that when asking anyone for help. On the last Monday in November, the day after a holiday weekend, we had a new client come in for an exam. A new client brought in their miniature poodle, Georgi, to have his ears checked. They have just moved here from south Florida. On the lower left front leg was a three inch by 2 inch round, raised mass. Now, this is a small dog for a mass of that size on the leg. It is large enough that the skin will not close when we take it off. It felt solid in some areas and soft in others which means it is a tumor with some fluid being produced. I took care of the dog’s ears. We talked about the tumor. It should be removed before it opens up on its own. The longer you wait the more of the leg will be left without skin when we take the tumor off. The problem I faced is that when I asked about how long it had been there the client said, “It’s been there a while. Our previous vet said that his microchip is in there.” I would really like to have seen the look on my own face at that moment. A microchip is the size of a large grain of rice. The tumor was three inches by two inches. I took a deep breath. I thought for a second before speaking. You see, traditionally, veterinarians are supposed to keep their mouths shut in situations like this. If you have ever been in a situation like this I am supposed to remember that things change or it probably got bigger or something that has more than a snowball’s chance in hell of being possible. I could not help it. I said, “Let me get my microchip reader,” and disappeared out the door. Reader in hand, I returned and scanned the dog. The scanner found the microchip five inches away at the level of the shoulder on his chest. When informed of

this, the client said, “Then why did our vet say it was the microchip?” I just said I did not know and went on. So, I can’t help but put myself in the shoes of that veterinarian. There is no way I can justify telling a client that a microchip caused a tumor to grow on the dog’s leg when every veterinarian and every pet shelter has a reader. He or she is setting themselves up for a fall. I would have to lie to cover for this mistake. The good part is that the client lives here now and will not go back. In summary, when you go for an opinion, the opinion has to be logical. There are few problems in veterinary medicine that don’t involve logic to some degree. Let’s always look for it, on my side of the table and on yours.
