Dear Reader, I will never forget the last time I saw my Dad. He was about to board a plane to go back home after visiting me in Orlando. I was getting all teary-eyed (as I always did when I said good-bye) and waving like crazy as he walked toward the gate with Mom. We had this little game we played at airports. We would walk toward the gate then turn and wave again, and repeat. He was too far away to say anything at this point but as soon as my smile started to peek through the tears he was satisfied. After three stops to turn and wave he said his final good-bye with a smile. Dad always wanted me to laugh and have fun in life. He did the same thing when I was a kid and I fell down or when I had a fight with my best friend. He would crack one of his corny jokes and I couldn’t help but giggle. Like magic the pain would go away. Without even knowing it, fathers teach us important things that shape the people we become. This month we meet some truly unique and wonderful Dads as we celebrate the Father’s of St. Johns. Please enjoy their stories that reveal a glimpse into the interesting and varied lives they live in our wonderful community.

SUMMER PARTY Remeber to “Keep It Simple” for the Perfect Summer Party at Home! by Susan Fowler, Events by Susan Lynne Summer is a great time to have a party and invite friends and family into your home for food and fun. Create a party that will really encourage your guest by keeping it simple so that you are not stressed when they arrive. Here are some basic planning ideas for the perfect party!

Stay Home

Have the party at your house to reduce your costs and give you total creative control. Start setting up your party the day before so if you don’t like your original layout you can modify as you decorate. Decorate the parts of your home you want to use for your party inside and outside. This will allow for clear boundaries for your guests to only go where the party is happening. As you are decorating set up food and beverage stations in different locations. This will allow your guest to spread out and socialize. Have two beverage stations one for adults and one for the kiddos.

Set Up Stations

The words “keep it simple” should be going through your mind at all times especially when it comes to food. Try to keep all the cooking outside if possible or cook inside the day before. Your oven and stove will make your home very warm. You want your menu to be filled with food your guest can easily grab and go. Set-up different food stations i.e. a main station with your main food items, a fruit and veggie station, a dessert station, and two beverage stations. Have simple snacks set-up all over like peanuts or chips. For the beverage stations make punch and name it after something fun and personal to you. It can be your signature drink and your kids will love this almost as much as the adults. My personal favorite is mixing 2 two liters of ginger ale with one of the Welches frozen concentrate juices (mixed berry or orange pineapple apple flavors are the best).

Use Easy Decorations To decorate use bright summer colors in moderation. Yes it is possible to over decorate. Your food can work as décor, brightly colored veggies and fruits displayed on clear or white platters i.e. (watermelon, berries, grapes, orange bell peppers, yellow bell peppers, carrots, and sugar peas). These are all bright colors and can be set-up outside. Balloons are cheap and can be used in so many ways. Tie a ribbon around your balloons and hang from the ceiling with tape or a tack. This saves you from having to use helium balloons and adds a lot to the décor. Outside use pin wheels, beach balls, sand pails, and shovels.

Make it “Look”Fancy

Have Fun

Entertaining your guests is the fun part! Most of them will know each other and will socialize with each other. You can provide games inside and outside like corn hole, giant jenga, badminton, ping pong, bocce ball, and croquet and inside set-up a place for cards or board games. There are people that can’t be outside and this set-up accommodates all of your guests. Finally, have really great music playing in the background loud enough to be heard but not too loud that your guests can’t hear themselves talk. Remember your guest are coming for you. So keep it simple and stay stress free so you can enjoy your party as much as your guest do.

Events

When decorating your food tables don’t just lay all the food out flat use different items around the house to add height like cake stands, glass, blocks, or books. Cover your table with one table cloth and take another table cloth and bunch it up and set a platter or beverage container on top to add more variety to your table.

A Few Good Dads Handsome, Smart, Fun & All-around Amazing Dads of St. Johns! by Debbie Gaylord Dads are awesome, especially in St. Johns Florida. We chose a few good Dads to get to know. They live here in St. Johns and may even be your neighbor. They are teachers, pilots, coaches and business-owners and although they may seem humble, their accomplishments and their dedication to their families, their spouses and their community speaks for itself.

Darren Rosenbaum Darren has been History Teacher for nearly 20 years and taught ESOL in South Korea from 1995 to 1998. In 2012, he and his family moved to the First Coast where he’s been a dual enrollment teacher for Duval County Public Schools. He married his wife Debbie in 1996 and they have 4 children; Josh, 15, and 12 year old triplets, Jake, Shainna and Lexi. He loves historical travel and has a special interest in visiting the battlefields of the First World War. Best Memory about being a Dad? One of my best memories about being a dad was also one of my first. It happened when my oldest son Josh was born. He arrived about a month early and, at just over 5 lbs., was a few pounds underweight. When we left the hospital, I was tasked with the enormous responsibility of putting him into the car seat for the first time. I remember trying to properly adjust the 5 point harness so that he’d be secure, but couldn’t. He was too small! True to form, men fix things. In the end, I asked the nurses for a few extra swaddling clothes and proceeded to wrap him like the

Michelin Man for his first ride home! Now, nearly 15 years later, he’s only a few inches from looking at me eye to eye. Where’d all the time go? Hanging with the Kids... Aside from the occasional movie or afternoon at the beach, tween and teen activities during the school year generally keep us close to home. However, when school is over, travel season begins! This year my daughters will be visiting their aunt in New York, we’ll all travel to Virginia to visit relatives and take side trip to visit Washington DC. After that, there’s surf camp, days at the beach, afternoons as the community pool, summer blockbusters, etc... Date Night? Now that our son is older, we’re able to get out more easily for dinner and a movie. We recently had sushi before seeing ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ and laughing hysterically for a few hours.

The perfect day... Even though I’ve been teaching for nearly 20 years, the job is time consuming. When I have a break, I go to the library, find a good mystery / thriller, and disappear into a book. Recent favorites were the Tom Robb Smith trilogy, David Baldacci, Lee Childs and my old standby, John Grisham. Great reads! Being a Dad is... While I can’t imagine it any differently, being a Dad is awesome, terrifying, exciting, aggravating, wonderful and exhausting, all at the same time!

Chris Easterling CDR Chris Easterling has served in the United States Navy as a Naval Aviation Reservist for the last 8 years which followed his 9 years of Active duty service. Currently, Chris is an Airline Captain on the A-320 aircraft with JetBlue Airways and is based at JFK in NY, NY. He holds a B.S. in Finance from the University of South Florida. When Chris isn’t working his “2” jobs, he enjoys his eclectic taste of rare whiskey’s, classic military aviation and coaching football. He has spent the last few years coaching with the Swiss Point Raider Middle School Football team and will continue to do so as his son Connor moves on to Bartram Trail High School. Chris and his wife Jacci of 17 years have 2 children, Connor 14, Devyn 11. Best Memory about being a Dad? Returning home to Hawaii after a 6 month deployment and meeting my son for the first time. He was born 2 weeks after I left for the Persian Gulf. Hanging with the Kids... Both my son and my daughter have a strong interest in fishing and since Spring has returned I’ve found the three of us spending more and more time chasing bass in the ponds around our neighborhood. Date night? Does car shopping for new family vehicles count? We’ve spent several days over the last week roaming the internet and car lots of Jacksonville for replacements to our aging vehicles.

The perfect day... As an airline pilot, my job keeps me away from my family 18 days a month. When I am home I find myself stealing any free moments between school, coaching and volunteering to spend time with my wife and kids. The last “perfect day” I can remember was a sunrise hike of Makapu Point on the windward side of Oahu with my family followed by some quality beach time in Waikiki doing nothing more than being with one another. Being a Dad is… A little like what I would imagine it would be like to be in The Peace Corps: The hours are long, the work is arduous, the pay is nonexistent but it’s the best thing I’ve ever done with my life. Its what I consider to be my most significant accomplishment and what I would want to be remembered for.

Rob McLevy Rob is a Logistics Manager at a national sign manufacturer with 30 years of logistics experience. He’s also a veteran Army officer, husband, and dad. He loves the outdoors riding his motorcycle, and shooting sports. As a member of a blended family, he is blessed with 5 amazing kids! Kalien age 24, Kimm age 20, Matthew age 15, Dallas age 14, and Morgan age 13. I am also lucky to be married to my beautiful and wonderful wife Shelley for 7 years now. Best Memory about being a Dad? My kids have given me years of great memories. Too many to count. Ranging from that first time you hear your daughter say I love you daddy, to watching your son score the winning touchdown to being blessed with a Granddaughter. Hanging with the Kids... This year’s spring break took us on a trip to Universal Studios that was filled with fun and laughter. Lots of great memories. I also recently took the best motorcycle ride of my life with my oldest daughter. My cheeks hurt from smiling the whole way Date Night? Most recent was a whole date, day and night. We spent the day in St Augustine playing tourist and sampling awesome food and drinks. Topped it off with a steak dinner and a movie. The Perfect Day... I’ll either jump on my

motorcycle and ride some back roads or head to the range and do some shooting. Being a Dad is… The reason I have grey hair. Seriously though, it is the hardest and most challenging thing I have done in my life (and I have done a lot). It is also though, the first thing that I would sign up to do all over again if I were given a chance. I know that I can’t always be there for each and every moment of their lives but I’ll never stop teaching my children and setting examples for them to fall back on. I want them to know how to be ladies and gentlemen, how to treat others, and how to love and respect themselves

Geoff Otts Geoff is a Regional Vice President for a company called MSC and is responsible for sales in Southeastern US with a team of 120+ employees. He grew up in Syracuse, NY and then went to college at Fresno State in California, where he met his wife Cheryl. Geoff has two children that are now 12 and 10 years old and he’ll be celebrating 15 years of marriage to Cheryl in October 2015. From 2001-2014, the family lived in Virginia but moved here in June of 2014, where both of their extended families have settled. Best Memory about being a Dad? My best memories when it comes to being a Dad has to be our annual family vacations. Every year we go to the beach for 1 week and spend quality time together. We always mix it up every year with something we have never done as a family before, whether its zip lining, a helicopter ride, or ocean fishing, we are committed to doing something we have never done before every year. Hanging with the Kids... We have a boat and just moved to Florida from Virginia last June. The kids have grown up boating, but with alligators coming into play here in Florida, there has been a real hesitation in getting on a tube. Last weekend the kids got on the tube, and had a great time, and we all swim a lot faster to the boat now. Date Night? My wife and I have traditionally set aside time for date night over the last 15 years. However, over the past 3 months, I have been coaching softball and things have been a bit chaotic on the weekends. However, we had a night off from softball last Friday and enjoyed dinner and a stroll on Jax beach. We love that we are on 30 minutes from the ocean!

The Perfect Day... I enjoy boating and sports, so for me the perfect day will be the 2nd week of the NFL season this year when the Jaguars play the Dolphins (my favorite team), and I drive my boat to the game...... Oh how I love Florida. Being a Dad is... Being a Dad is about being a godly role model, being a best friend, being fun, yet responsible, but most of all spending time with my children and building a legacy with them.

My daughter plays volleyball and runs track at Bartram Trail HS. My first and best memory of being a dad was when I reached in to pick up my daughter for the first time and she opened her eyes and grabbed my finger. I thought to myself, "you can have whatever you want". I have been wrapped around her finger ever since. Hanging with the Kids... A week long family trip to Key West. We also went SCUBA diving with Sarah and Chris on Chris's birthday and swam with tiger, lemon and hammerhead sharks.

Date Night? The most recent date with my wife was to celebrate our 19th anniversary on Monday May 11. We try to go out at least once a week to get some quality time together. The perfect day... would be a trip to the beach with my family riding in my surprise 40th Birthday present from my wife. A Jeep Wrangler. Being a Dad is... being a math tutor, a comedian, a best friend, a confidant, an ATM, a disciplinarian, and a role model.

Great Ideas to

Summer-ize Your Patio

by Cindy Baker, Sr. Designer Inspirational Kitchens by Design (IKD)

Summertime is upon us and as many head to the beaches to enjoy the summer fun, a lot of us want to stay a little closer to home. Outdoor living is getting in full swing and it’s time to start entertaining and gearing up for backyard cookouts and fellowship with friends. Some of you may be wondering how to do this and spruce up your outdoor living space on a summertime budget, and it’s easier than you think. Here are four easy tips to summer-ize your space!

Slipcovers and Pillows First off, you need to look both inside AND outside. Time to dust off the winter drab from our living spaces in both areas. Bring in that summer fun with bright colors and vivid prints by changing out your dark, heavy textured accent pillows with fresh new covers. You can also slipcover your furniture with lightweight linen in a cool neutral color so those pillows can really pop. These can easily be cleaned and stored after the season to be used again and again.

Water features, Flowers and Dishes Try painting some terra-cotta flowerpots and plant some beautiful flowers in them. Use them as accents near the pool or water feature. Speaking of that, if you don’t have one, pick up a small water feature and plug in for instant ambiance. Surrounded by some flowering plants and candles, some comfy chairs and you’ve created a perfect outdoor reading nook. When you’re ready to put the book down, make sure

you invested in some fun, brightly colored plastic dishware and glasses for serving wine and tapas around the house both inside and out during the season.

Flea Market Finds One of the biggest trends right now is using eco-friendly things. There are a lot of salvage yards around or hit up some garage sales to find lots of very interesting and cool unique ideas. Try thinking outside the box for some of your patio furniture or accessories by using something old to create something new. Sometimes it’s just about taking an old worn-out table or your grandmother’s old metal tray and spraypainting it with a bright color like turquoise or hot pink to use out by the pool or add to your indoor living space.

Ambiance of Lighting Christmas tree lights aren’t just for Christmas. Take the lights off the tree that you just took down a couple of months ago, and string those in your patio to simulate the summer sky and the stars when you’re entertaining. Wrap your trees or string overhead for a canopy of stars. Nothing is more romantic and inviting than sitting under the lights with their soft glow, while lounging in your outdoor space with friends and family. And don’t forget, low lighting makes EVERYTHING look great! Whether you enjoy the bright summer sun or warm summer nights, outdoor living and bringing your indoors out is sure to brighten your spirit and all those around you. Take the summer plunge and get decorating!

Twice Exceptional Special Needs Students Have Option at Brain Balance Kids New Center of Jacksonville

In living rooms, therapy sessions and teacher conferences across Florida, parents are hearing something new: “Your child is twice exceptional…” Twice Exceptional, often known as “2e,” refers to children who are both exceptionally gifted while at the same time face learning challenges or differences. Although not an official classification in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, the term is becoming more commonly utilized with children that exhibit unusual strengths along with unusual functional weakness. For many, the 2e term follows a previous diagnosis of Asperger’s or other Autism Spectrum or Pervasive Developmental Disorder. Brain Balance Founder and author of three books of childhood neurobehavioral issues, Dr. Robert Melillo, characterize the new terminology this way, “In the past, many of these children would also be labeled as Asperger’s. They are generally very high functioning, but usually struggle in the nonverbal, social communication realm.” “In my experience they are very similar, although 2e kids are usually even more constantly higher functioning,” Melillo added. “Their attributes are their unusual strengths – they have extremely high verbal IQ scores. They are highly intelligent, usually in the genius range in certain academic, left brain skills.” As many parents of 2e students will attest, often these children excel in their left-brain abilities. They may have great attention to detail and memory, excelling in fine motor

16

skills with uncommon musical ability. Skills such as math operations and vocabulary may be advanced as well. But where their left-brain strengths accentuate their ability in some areas, the 2e child can face other challenges. Dr. Melillo describes the imbalance: “Because their left brain is overactive, 2e children can also be hyper-impulsive, manic, obsessive and compulsive -- all of these are left brain functions. But without the balance and inhibition of the right brain, these functions are too strong.” As with some other ASDs, parents may note that a 2e child has an overactive immune system. Autoimmune issues, allergies, chemical and food sensitivities may be prevalent, too. An overactive left-brain may lead to angry outbursts, something many parents of 2e kids know all too well. With the unusual strengths of the 2e child can come challenging weaknesses. Right brain skills such as nonverbal communication, socialization and attention are areas where the 2e child may struggle. “Big picture skills, aspects of reading comprehension, main idea, and pragmatics are difficult for a 2e child. And they don’t ‘get’ humor,” says Dr. Melillo. “They may be poor at geometry and math reasoning. They struggle with gross motor skills, and have poor balance and coordination.” But despite this marked imbalance in skills, a 2e

St. Johns Magazine 904-687-8538

child can flourish, maximizing their strengths and eliminating their weaknesses. Specific approaches are uniquely helpful to the 2e student, including many aspects of the Brain Balance program. “Brain Balance started by asking the question ‘what is happening in the brain of a child with ADHD, OCD, Autism, Dyslexia etc.’ The actual neurologic problem that produces these symptoms is a developmental imbalance between the two hemispheres of the brain, known as a Functional Disconnection,” says Dr. Melillo Through the unique assessment system developed and utilized exclusively by Brain Balance, the weak skills of a 2e child can be targeted and a specific plan is formulated to strengthen those functional weaknesses through stimulation and repetitive training, together with healthy dietary and nutritional guidelines. Addressing all weaknesses – including motor, sensory, cognitive, academic, and behavioral – at the same time can significantly help reduce or eliminate the problems many 2e children face, resulting in long-term improvement. “When this imbalance is corrected,” said Dr. Melillo, “the child’s true gifted nature comes out.” For more information about how Brain Balance can help your child, contact 904-800-7278 or brainbalancecenters. com/locations/jacksonville/.

the floridian Imagine walking into a gorgeous, leafy green patio with a southern charm feel and tons of shade. That is what you will see at The Floridian. Inside the restaurant you will find local artwork depicting beach and local art themes with a boat hanging from the ceiling. There is a small, quaint bar located in the back of the establishment with few small tables. Inevitably, you will feel like you are on vacation. The menu boasts fresh, healthy local favorites. Datil BBQ, Not Your Mommas meatloaf, shrimp and sausage pilau, corn bread stack and shrimp and grits (of course). There’s also healthy fare including a delightful Pork Belly Caprese salad with heirloom tomatoes and a delicious southern Belle salad loaded with your choice of meat and peaches, sweet potatoes and candied pecans. They also offer tempeh or tofu as vegetarian options and substitutes. This writer highly recommends the cheese board as an appetizer. It is loaded with cheeses from Sweet Grass Dairy from Thomasville, GA, local FL honey, pecans, apples, peaches and a French baguette. There are daily desserts including seasonal cupcakes, key lime cheesecake and a chocolate coconut pecan bar (is your mouth watering?). They offer several local wines and beer. They have several (7) aperitif/digestive aromatic wine drinks, which include a Madeira Cobbler with ingredients of a fortified wine, seasonal

fruits, citrus/vanilla simple syrup and nutmeg (yum). They offer a moderately priced kids menu with staple entrees including quesadilla, chicken, shrimp and ribs. By the way, several menu items can be made gluten free! The Floridian has a reputation of being a fine establishment and appears popular with the locals and tourists alike. They find the finest local, fresh ingredients from local farmers, seafood vendors and ranchers and this is quite evident in their food. The Floridian is a part of the sustainable food movement, which is quite commendable. It embodies “clean eating” at its best! The atmosphere is nice enough for a Saturday Date night dinner wearing a cute sundress or laid back enough for stopping by on the way back from the beach wearing shorts and a tank. The next time your near 39 Cordova St. in old St. Augustine, stop on in and enjoy a local meal and drink!

Wear Flip Flops. Have Fun. Give Back. Every year on the third Friday in June, Tropical Smoothie Café celebrates National Flip Flop Day, when we raise funds to benefit our national charity partner, Camp Sunshine. What started as a holiday to thank our customers for their loyalty to our brand, has turned into a mission to raise money for Camp Sunshine and support children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. This year on June 19th, Tropical Smoothie Café will celebrate our 9th annual National Flip Flop Day. Come by one of our cafes wearing flip flops on June 19th between 2 pm to 7 pm for National Flip Flop Day and we'll recognize your support with a FREE 24 oz. Jetty Punch Smoothie!!

Thank you to our winners and all logo designers for this exciting opportunity to bring Camp Sunshine to life in each of our cafes.

The Story Behind Our National Flip Flop Day Logo

A big thanks to our customers for their generosity and support for Camp Sunshine!

This year we had a great time partnering with Camp Sunshine for the first National Flip Flop Day Logo Design Contest. All campers were invited to submit creative logo designs to be used in our 2015 National Flip Flop Day promotional materials. We asked the children to reflect on their experience with Camp Sunshine and Tropical Smoothie Café and the designs we received were very special. The two winning logos we selected from Jack and Halie, represent the importance of Camp Sunshine to the children and families that attend.

Let’s Play Ball local Baseball team created by families

by Pam Hemmen

The 14U Shockers of North Florida say baseball is a life lesson. It’s not only about winning or losing, but how you play the game. The 14U Shockers of North Florida is a new team in its first season. The primary reason for branching off and starting our own team is really quite simple…. the coaches. Our coaches have a love for the game and a desire to teach these kids how baseball can relate to life and the lessons they are learning along the way. As our player Will Dunlop stated “the reason I wanted to join this team is because I wanted to work under Coach Novak, because of his work ethic when it comes to baseball and that he is a caring and inspiring coach.” The Shockers are comprised of 10 families, not just players. Family is a big

part of this team. They sit for hours every weekend watching the team play in the hot sun, freezing cold, and sometimes rain, all while our bleacher butts go numb for hours! We enjoy every minute of it! Laughing, giggling, telling stories, and making life-long friends… the comradery off the field is just as important as on the field. It really doesn’t get any better than this.

Katie grew a tumor three centimeters above her left eye that was bloody and irritated. We checked it. It was our old enemy, the great

masquerader, a mast cell tumor. I realized this would be complicated because we had to control her allergies and get her to heal. She has been off and on cortisones because her allergies were so difficult. Cortisones can impede healing. We scheduled her surgery for the day after the North American Veterinary Confer-

At that conference, I had a detailed discussion with a company veteri-

narian at the Zoetis (the manufacturer) booth to explore the new drug for Katie. I am, by nature, cautious about new products and their promises. It turned out to be a wonderful application for the drug. We started it the day of surgery. It stopped Katie’s itching in one pill. It did not cure her of allergies. Nothing can do that. But it knocked out the itching! Unfortunately, Katie’s tumor grew too quickly while I was at the conference so it was no longer appropriate to do sur-

Katie is being treated now by a specialist for her mast cell tumor. My

experience with Katie gives me great hope that we have a new, more effective weapon against allergies. Imagine a veterinary allergy treatment without cortisones or their side effects and without the itching of allergies. This is a very exciting product. The world gets better! For Katie, it came in the nick of time.

Divorce for Women

Four Emotions Women Can Expect During the Divorce Process by Heather B. Quick, Esq. The divorce process can bring up all kinds of powerful and unexpected emotions. No matter how well prepared you feel, divorce is probably going to take you by surprise. What are some of the emotions you’ll most likely feel during a divorce? Anger is perhaps the most common and most overwhelming emotional reaction. Your husband has probably done things that were painful for you, and sometimes it’s hard not to obsess about the things that have happened. It’s difficult to believe, but your anger is making you more miserable than it is your husband. The best thing you can do for yourself is to try to find an outlet of release - exercise, even if it’s just a nightly stroll, is a great place to start. It may surprise you that you feel terribly guilty. Even if you’re divorcing because of an affair your husband had, you may be devoured by guilt. It’s not uncommon to feel that you didn’t work hard enough on your marriage. You may be wonder if the divorce is your fault, especially if you have children. This is another normal emotional reaction you can expect to feel. You need to accept that you did the best you could, which is part of learning to let go of the past.

Fear is another common reaction to divorce. Fear has some justification. Divorced women often lose income, and may deal with the need to go back to work or change jobs. This can be overwhelming, especially with all of the other changes going on in your life. There are lots of resources, however, to make this transition much easier, and even exciting. Don’t let fear keep you from doing what you really want to do. Divorce isn’t just a setback; it represents an opportunity, too. You may be grief stricken by the collapse of your marriage, and this is a healthy response. It’s only normal to grieve the death of a relationship. If the dissolution of the marriage involves a betrayal by your spouse, you’re probably particularly likely to be grieving the loss of the image you had of your marriage. Grieving helps you let go and move on to a brighter future. Divorce is a difficult process, but it’s an opportunity for an exciting transition as well. As you experience each stage of emotions, recognize them as normal responses to what is probably the most stressful season of life for any woman. Allow yourself to move through them; be good to yourself; remember: this too shall pass and better days are truly ahead. If you’d like to learn more, please get in touch with us today!
