Local Realtor & American Veteran

he phrase, “Let me continue to serve you…” is written on the back of Bernard Anthony Diggs business card and it sums up his philosophy toward both life and business perfectly. Bernard is a Realtor leading the New Diggs Team with Florida Homes Realty & Mortgage. But what sets him apart is the fact that he is also a Soldier, having served in the United States Navy Active Duty from 2001-2006, and as an Active Reservist from 2007 through the present. “I joined the U.S. NAVY to make a difference for my country and to serve. I am proud of the people who served before me, those that have served alongside, and all who will serve after me.” Working as an Aircrew member flying P-3 airplanes Bernard traveled the world through deployments. It is a valuable asset to military personnel seeking to buy or sell their home to have someone who understands the unique situations they face. Having lived the life of a soldier he understands how challenging it is to move frequently. He understands what military families are going through and how hard they work for our country. Like Fathers & Mothers who sacrifice time with their families and parents who stay home alone with the children while one spouse is deployed. Bernard himself was not there when his own daughter was born because he was serving our country. As a Realtor, he has made it his mission to help families relocate seamlessly. He has a passion for helping families find new homes or sell existing homes in St. Johns & Jacksonville. Bernard has assisted countless military men and women in finding new homes. Sometimes this means working with military clients who are not even in the country and have only their spouses to rely upon.

“Bernard was extremely welcoming and friendly from the minute we met him. He was professional, energetic, informative and genuinely caring when we encountered difficulties with our home. We will forever be thankful for Bernard’s assistance and communication through our entire experience, him and his team are wonderful people to work with (2016)”. The Firman Family

“Working with Bernard Diggs was unlike any other experience with a Realtor. Bernard showed real commitment and care about what was best for my family. He sacrificed his personal time in order to accommodate our trip to Florida and set aside an entire holiday weekend to show us as many homes as possible in order for us to make the decision on what home to choose. No stone was unturned in presenting the options on homes/builders. Bernard was always available throughout the process if we had any concerns or questions and was genuine in his journey to put us in the right home. Bernard backed up everything he said with actions and made the whole process very seamless and enjoyable. Living in Massachusetts and buying a home in Florida can cause concern but with Bernard as our realtor all concerns were mitigated. I would highly recommend Bernard to anyone looking to purchase a home (2015)”. Brian Beauchamp

He is actively involved in the non-profit organization Hope for The Warrior, an organization that provides comprehensive support programs for service members, veterans, and military families that are focused on transition, health and wellness, peer engagement, and connections to community resources.

Bernard enjoys his time off playing basketball at his community court, reading business and real estate best sellers, listening to Ted Talks, but mostly supporting the Jacksonville Jaguars by attending all season games! Although his house is located in St. Johns and his clientele consists of families from all surrounding communities, a piece of his heart and business drive remains for our service men and women who pay the ultimate sacrifice in serving our country.

Shearwater One part sanctuary. One part playground. One part social hub

Imagine yourself kayaking along Trout Creek or spending a Saturday afternoon at your amenity center’s Lazy River, and then simply walking to your beautifully designed home set on a preserve lot. Maybe on Sunday you decide to play a game of tennis on the clay courts. On Monday morning, you walk your child to school at an A-rated St. Johns County elementary school. This is just a taste of what life could be like at Shearwater, one of St. Johns newest master-planned communities. Located near Timberlin Creek Elementary School on the CR 210 corridor, the community is built on five key concepts; healthy living, engagement, design, connectivity, and stewardship. Shearwater boasts 1,500 acres, with 600 acres devoted to natural preserve that include nature trails and kayak launch points on neighboring Trout Creek. Unique features like the lodge-style Kayak Club amenity center and well-appointed playgrounds situated under a canopy of trees celebrate outdoor living. "Shearwater is more than a residential neighborhood— it’s a lifestyle. We designed Shearwater to provide an abundance of recreational activities that center around active living and community connections. Event and activity programming is developed based upon residents’ desires, and the Kayak Club provides a variety of spaces for residents to connect with each other and enjoy favorite pastimes. All of this and more is available right at residents’ doorsteps. We are thrilled that Shearwater is starting to come to life,” said Jill Flores, Shearwater’s Community Director. It is hard to believe the beauty of the natural setting until you visit the community itself. Bernard Diggs, a local Realtor with New Diggs Team, frequently brings his clients to Shearwater. “As a real estate agent in St. Johns, it brings me joy when I bring a home buying client to Shearwater and their face says it all upon entering the picturesque community and while sharing with them the future development plans. Immediately my clients get a sense of relief that they have not only found their new home but dream community and lifestyle” says Diggs. Builders include Mastercraft Builder Group, David Weekley, Lennar & Richmond American Homes. Home designs are

20

geared toward coastal living with architectural styles that blend well into the natural environment and offer a feeling of old Florida. For more information please visit www.ShearwaterLiving. com or visit the model homes located at…260 Shearwater Parkway, St. Johns 32092. HEALTHY LIVING At Shearwater, you’ll find an abundance of recreational opportunities, including an extensive trail system, parks, an expansive amenity center with resort-style pool and lap pool, Fitness Lodge and more.

ENGAGEMENT

Our clubhouse, streetscapes, front porches, gathering spaces, activities, and events all contribute to a vibrant community life.

DESIGN

Shearwater’s distinctive regional architecture and design aesthetic offer contemporary style and enduring integrity.

CONNECTIVITY In addition to the Kayak Club’s free Wi-Fi services, you’ll find a Lifestyle Coordinator who specializes in connecting neighbors and friends through community involvement. Connections also extend to the larger region through collaborative programs and partnerships.

STEWARDSHIP We take pride in responsible stewardship of the land in all of our homebuilding and land development practices. This approach is carefully passed on to the Homeowners’ Association and individual households as a cause worth embracing.

Tales from an

Old School

Sleepaway Camp

The Author Circa 1982 at Bronx House

by Darren Rosenbaum Even though it was 1982, I can remember it like it was yesterday. I was a skinny 14 year old camper spending my 5th summer at Bronx House Emanuel Camp in Copake, NY and my bunk-mates and I had a plan. None of us liked a particularly arrogant counselor I’ll call ‘Joe’, so we devised a clever prank to make him the camp laughingstock and provide us with memories to last a lifetime. As an 18 year old, ‘Joe’ could bring his car to camp. Not only did he endlessly boast and brag about the freedoms his yellow VW Beetle provided him, he loved to rub it into everyone’s face about how great a tennis player he was. After a few weeks of this nonsense, a bunch of my bunk-mates and I hatched a plan for the ages. Without giving too much away, it was to our good fortune that the tennis courts sat right next to the counselor parking lot. The plan called for a little recon, some investigating and clever requisitioning, and, to make it work, perfect timing. We also needed a lot of people so after midnight, our entire bunk, about 20 kids in all, quietly departed for the parking area with a few large screwdrivers. Knowing we only had a short window of opportunity, a few of us set about the first task, dismantling a single section of tennis court fencing about 15 feet tall while the majority of us made a bee-line for Joe’s car. Within minutes, 15 of us had picked up the Beetle and moved it about 75 feet to the tennis court. By this time, our deconstruction crew had removed a

single section of fencing and set it aside. Then, each of us took a hand-hold and picked up the car for its final journey of the evening, and valet parked it inside the tennis court ‘Joe’ loved so much. We quickly set about reconstructing the section of fence, congratulated each other on a job well done and headed back to our bunks. Total cost: Nothing; Elapsed time: 20 minutes; Memories: Forever! At breakfast the next morning, word spread about the yellow Beetle that had ‘mysteriously’ made its way into the tennis court and that a deflated ‘Joe’ was beside himself wanting to know how this had happened ‘to him’! As hard as it was, our group talked it up like the other campers, offering silly scenarios even though we knew the truth. Eventually, the story would be told but for my generation of campers, a legendary prank was born that day. Summer camp was full of memories that still play in my head like scenes from a blockbuster, and they never seem to grow old. A ‘normal’ day might include swimming and boating at the waterfront, playing ping-pong or tetherball before meals, spending afternoons at the ‘Rec’ center playing floor hockey or developing photos in a darkroom. Evenings in the bunkhouse were spent talking about girls or running the ‘Skully’ board painted on the floor with our Heinz ketchup caps. There were plenty of highlights too, like when the entire camp would go to Bash Bish Falls, a local state park, for a day of swimming and diving. Or

rything you nee d eve

when we’d head to Riverside Park in Agawam, Mass. for a ride on the old Thunderbolt, long before it lost its charm and became a Six Flags. And how could I forget trying out for and earning my spot on the camps traveling softball team, or the forest campouts with the other bunks, listening to our counselors tell eerie ‘Cropsey’ stories around the campfire. Last but not least was the annual rite of passage for all ‘senior’ campers too old to return the next year, an end of summer 5-day trip to Montreal, Washington DC or Virginia Beach. It was all so much fun! Whether it’s a 6 week program at a local school with year round friends or a sleep away camp in the Ocala National Forest, Adirondack’s or Berkshires, summer camp is an adventure for everyone involved. In the end, I spent 6 unforgettable summers at Bronx House (now called Berkshire Hills) and as a returning camper I always looked forward to seeing my ‘summer’ friends. I made lasting friendships with many of my bunk-mates and, thanks to Facebook and other social media sites, these friendships still exist today. So while today’s camper might have heard the legend of the yellow Beetle in the tennis court, rest assured that if I were to post the story on a camp alumni site, the scenes from that blockbuster summer would play again for all my friends from the early 1980’s, Joe included!

Innovative Home Design for the Modern Day Mom by Chris Shee of Mastercraft Builder Group

Remember when Mom used to pay all the bills, manage everyone’s schedule, family members’ birthdays, and keep track of everything else either in a cluttered spot in the kitchen or at a small desk in her bedroom? That was the norm for many that grew up in Northern Florida years ago. Today’s parents seem to be operating at a much faster pace with more to juggle than in the past. Advancement in internet-connected devices like laptops, tablets, and smart phones allows for mobility. More flat-screen TVs in more rooms requires more space. Who wants to use the kitchen counter, dining room table, couch, or other notso-comfortable spot to handle all of this? And, where can all of this “stuff” be stored and organized so it’s not cluttering up our living spaces? Homebuilders are recognizing the changing needs of the modern day family and responding with innovative floor plans. One clever concept for the multitasking mom is The Pocket Office. A Pocket Office is an ideal space for any home no matter who lives there. These rooms are designed to be a dedicated area for parents to work, pay bills, and manage the household, as well as a more quiet spot for kids to do their homework. They’re just large enough to include a built-in desk with cabinets and room for a printer, files, mail, and all of the clutter we collect. We no longer need the giant “power den” like we used to use but rather a small pocket office. “I like it off the kitchen—close enough to the action but just far enough away to keep someone from placing

the pizza box on top of the utility bill,” says Deryl Patterson, Architect, President and Founder of Housing Design Matters. “A pocket office off the kitchen is also the perfect place for kids to do their homework while parents prepare the evening meal.” Patterson recently designed several new plans for MasterCraft Builder Group in Shearwater—all of which have a pocket office as an option. “The pocket office is wildly popular in Shearwater,” says Chris Shee, Partner of MasterCraft Builder Group. “Our Egret model showcases a pocket office just off the kitchen and next to the dining area. Not only is the location ideal, but the space is perfectly sized to be ‘Mom’s Command Center.’” MasterCraft’s pocket office showcases a desk with lower cabinets for keeping files organized and convenient. One of the walls above the desk has upper cabinets for storage and the other has a window looking out to the backyard and allowing natural light to brighten the space. The cabinets and desktop match the kitchen cabinets and countertops in order to make the room look classy and flow well with the décor. An optional barn door was installed so that the room can be closed off if need be and adds a great design element to the dining area. Patterson believes a well positioned pocket office is what every working mom needs. “It’s a place where the serious business of running a household can be conducted daily while still in earshot of the kids and dinner simmering on the stove.”

A Calorie By Any Other Name is Not Equal. Understanding Food Choices

by Nancy Cohen RDN LDN, Nutritionist in St. Augustine at Feeding The Body Feeding The Soul

T

here is a lot of discrepancy when it comes to food plans and calories. Many consumers think if they just count their calories with a 500 calorie per day deficit then they will drop the magic one pound per week. Perhaps, the premise to increase your exercise calories means that you can eat what you want in equivalent to what you burned- some of this may be true or not. At least in theory it is.

Does eating make you fat?

Are calories just calories?

Does eating extra protein make you have more muscle?

The simple answer is NO. Each calorie or unit of heat for the four different types of energy sources are unique with their own properties. The calories for the four classifications are: 1 gram of Carbohydrate= 4 kilocalories 1 gram of Protein = 4 kilocalories 1 gram of Fat = 9 kilocalories 1 gram of Alcohol- 9 kilocalories.

What does it look like? 1 TBSP oil= 15 grams of fat 135 calories 1 cup of strawberries= 15 grams of carbohydrates and 60 calories 2 oz lean chicken = 15 grams of protein and 55 calories Interestingly enough, they are not all burned at the same rate, nor do they have the same effects on blood sugar, weight, muscle status and hydration. The two slowest burning calories are fat and alcohol. So an overconsumption of either can drag a weight management program down. However- that being said here is a really important question:

The simple answer: NO. Fat is an essential nutrient that is important to the transportation of fat soluble vitamins, integrity of skin and organs and over consumption does not make you fat- unless your calories are too high. Adipose tissue (fat) is the storage of any kind of excessive source of calories.

NO- however eating too little protein and calories from any type of food, can cause muscle wasting and can cause increased body fat- by slowing metabolism. So adequate protein intake is a must .8 grams/kilogram of body weight- 1.2 grams/ kilogram of body weight.

Does eating too many Carbohydrates cause diabetes? No- but overeating, and being overweight for adults and children can cause Hyperinsulinemia which can cause difficulty to metabolize calories correctly and can lead to Obesity, Diabetes, Heart Disease and a host of other medical concerns. All calories are NOT equal. Having a Nutritionist design a tailored food plan for you for your fitness, height, weight age and body type is the best way to have your calorie plan distributed. Contact Nancy the Nutritionist today to have your Nutrition Food Plan tailor customized for you. You can reach Nancy at 970-875-7114 or feedingthebodyfeedingthesoul@gmail.com

A: There are many clues, such as: the TV is too loud, you ask people to repeat themselves, you misunderstand what’s said, and the worse thing: You stop asking people to repeat themselves or stop going to church, restaurants or any social activities.
