THE KEY TO SUCCESS FOR MENTON & BALLOU GROUP

St. Johns County's Leaders in Real Estate

A few years ago two of the top St. Johns Real Estate Agents, George L. Ballou II and Lisa Menton had an idea that would change the trajectory of their careers forever. Each of them were leading agents at Watson Realty in St. Johns and their plan centered on joining forces, leveraging their combined forty plus years of experience and individual success to create a full-service real estate team. Together they would harness the

who did not specialize as buyer’s or seller’s agents but were able to work with both. When a team-member is faced with a challenge, the team is there to assist. Therefore when you hire the Menton Ballou Group you are getting a full service real estate experience. They also have a people who work behind the scenes on administrative tasks to help keep things organized and allow the agents to focus on building relationships and serving clients directly, without distraction.

area’s growth and mentor other realtors on a level they never imaged. Their ultimate goal was to provide clients with unprecedented market exposure, and access to the problem-solving skills of the best in the business. George and Lisa began by developing a team of independent, strong agents and dedicated themselves to nurturing their success. They said that one important aspect as they grew was to find Realtors

The success of the Menton Ballou Group is their ability to

give listed customers unprecedented exposure through marketing combined with access to the entire team when it comes to problemsolving. They have had remarkable success with this formula and continue to be the top producing team at Watson with nearly $40 million in sales this year alone and this is projected to continue to increase in the future.

Lisa Menton

Lisa Menton is a resident of St. Johns Golf and Coun-

try Club where she lives with her husband and daughter. She became a Real Estate Agent not long after moving to St. Johns over a decade ago. In the early years, she specialized in helping people relocate to the area.

of relocating to North East Florida. I know the challenges and stress that comes with moving your family. Real Estate allows me to help others with this transition to find not a new house, but a new home. I can't imagine doing anything else.”

Her success in real estate is the direct result of the

knowledge she gained in the business world. Prior to becoming a Realtor ten years ago, she spent 17 years with Merrill Lynch and financial brokerage firms in Canada. This was crucial during the recession.

“I understand the corporate world, I understand sys-

tems and their importance in streamlining business. That is the approach I take to my real estate transactions. That leaves time for what is truly important, getting people/families settled in their new communities, and putting down roots.”

Lisa is an expert at studying the market and navigating

it for her clients. “The ever evolving real estate market is a chal-

He currently is a resident of Nocatee in Del Webb Ponte Vedra, a community he loves. George attributes his success to his understanding of the market and the relationships he builds with clients. “My skills start with being a good listener and finish with being a tireless advocate of my customer’s and client’s desired real estate goals through the closing and beyond.” He says his key inspirations are his granddaughters, the little girls in his life who call him GaGa! It also helps that his wife Jamie Ballou is a team member. His "twenty-four/seven" work schedule reflects the fact that he loves what he does.

7 Home Staging Ideas to Help Get You Started

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

The saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” never connected more than in your home. As individuals enter they immediately form a first impression. What do you think your home says? Does it convey a person that is warm and inviting; colorful and full of life; sleek and elegant; well-traveled and interesting; love of nature and surroundings; simplistic and minimal; busy and a bit disorganized; or tired and worn in need of refreshing. Your home conveys what words need not verbalize. Whether you are considering selling your home or staying, there’s no better time than the present to take a look around. Springtime is approaching and with it a time for renewal. Here are a few tips to get the cohesive look you and potential buyers are looking for. A picture’s worth a thousand words and you want those words to be positive as potential buyers walk through your door. They want to picture the home as theirs not yours, so de-personalize. Take a good look around and see it through your buyer’s eyes. Tone it down, freshen it up, organize your space, de-clutter, de-clutter, de-clutter. Time to stop thinking of what’s appealing to you but what’s conducive to selling your home quickly and easily. Spring forward and put your plan (whatever it may be) into action. Let your home do the talking. For more home staging ideas contact Marlene Kenney at roomrescuer@gmail.com

1. Rooms with a visual connection to one another should display colors that relate and work well. For a timeless interior use neutrals on walls and flooring together. 2. The use of area rugs in larger spaces defines the zone. 3. Keep your rooms clutter free and organized. Don’t try to squeeze too much into one area. Let the room breathe. 4. Rearrange accessories. Create vignettes in groups of 3-5 using various sizes and heights. Displaying items on a tray creates a visual effect. It looks like they are one piece. 5. Throw pillows always brighten up your furniture. If your couch is solid add patterns and color with your pillows. Pattern mixing works when you combine bold large-scale prints with subtle smaller scale prints in complimentary colors. Pillows allow an easy accent and can be changed accordingly. 6. If you carry the same colors and hues throughout your home, it is easy to move items from one area to another because you know they work together. 7. Mirrors bounce light around the room and create the impression of a bigger brighter space.

Delicious Dish

by Chef Matt of Achieving Culinary Enlightenment.

Keep it Simple

Growing up in a large family with a small budget my earliest “culinary training” began watching my mother and grandmother create enormous meals using limited ingredients. This always meant using basic fresh vegetables, whole meats, and made from scratch breads and sauces. Prepackage foods in my house were virtually unheard of. From a very early age I learned, “if you want to eat you need to learn to cook. Understanding the basics can make anyone a great cook and more often than not there are immense savings not only in dollars but in health. By “keeping it simple” and utilizing homemade stocks, fresh herbs, and a pantry that contains “ready to use” Mother sauces dinner can be stress free and always allow for versatility and experimentation. The most important skill to master is the use and care of your kitchen knives. A chef ’s biggest investment is usually

their knives. There are three standard blades all professional and home chefs should possess. These are the Cook Knife, Boning Knife and Paring Knife. The Cooks knife provides the chopping, dicing and slicing needs. The Boning knife is used to fabricate meats, poultry and fish. The Paring knife is perfect for peeling, garnish, and small hand held jobs. There are thousands of knives to choose from. These range dramatically in price, but as the saying goes, “you get what you pay for”. In my opinion, hands down, Wustoff makes the finest allpurpose blade on the planet. I have owned the same named knife for over twenty years and it has performed without fail and always keeps a razor-sharp edge. The most important thing to know about the care of knives is how to properly sharpen them and NEVER put your knives in the dishwasher. Obviously, the most important thing to know about the use of knives is not to get a finger under them! Keeping it simple means understanding just a few of the basics. Next issue we will explore the art of making sauces using the 5 Mother sauces. Like a painter these sauces make up the palate that you can use to create the thousands of gourmet flavors that will have you cooking like a pro!

Relay for Life Comes to Bartram Trail High School in St. Johns by Jennifer Yarbrough

On April 1, 2017 local Cancer Survivors, Caregivers, and citizens will

come together at the American Cancer Society Bartram Trail Relay for Life to remind the community that “There’s No Place Like Hope.” The Relay for Life is a “grassroots, community-based team event,” which happens all over the United States every Spring. The day starts with a “Survivor’s Lap,” and then a “Caregiver’s Lap,” to recognize those directly affected by Cancer. Teams set up “camps,” around the track selling items to raise funds for the event and team members take turns walking around the track. A member of each team must be walking at all times to symbolize how those battling cancer never rest. In the evening, Luminarias will be placed around the track in honor of loved ones lost to Cancer and Cancer Survivors. The lit luminarias against the night sky are a powerful reminder of just how many people in our community have been affected.

One of those Survivors is Danielle Rodriguez. Danielle is like so many

of us, a 40-something mom of two small children, she leads a busy life. Last February, she noticed a small pimple on her breast, but thought she might wait until her scheduled exam in April to get it checked out. Her mother intervened and as mother’s often do, encouraged her to make an appointment right away. Thankfully, she did. She was diagnosed with Stage 1 Breast Cancer and had to undergo two surgeries and six weeks of daily radiation treatments. Throughout her experience her family, her mom especially, gave her strength. Her mom, her “rock,” who was already a “medical buff,” researched everything that she was going through and helped her gain peace of mind. Danielle describes herself as a person with a “get it done,” mentality and credits that with getting her through. She also found strength in prayer and keeping a positive outlook. Since her diagnosis and treatment, she has worked hard to change her lifestyle and that of her family. She encourages eating organic and being mindful of the food you eat and the chemicals you bring into your home and body. Her advice for people who receive a Cancer diagnosis: it doesn’t have to be a death sentence. Get all your facts from all sources—traditional and non-traditional. Work to change your lifestyle, focus on your spirituality, eliminate stress and make your health a priority. By finding strength in the people around her and her faith, Danielle Rodriguez beat Cancer and is living her life with a new focus and passion.

Another Cancer Survivor is Bjorn Huysmans. Bjorn didn’t know when

he got involved with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life that one day he would be walking the “Survivor Lap,” himself. In 2014, the 30-something, Small Business Owner decided to get involved with Relay for Life, making his signature “Belgian Waffles,” from his homeland to raise funds for the cause. When he shares his experiences with Relay for Life, one cannot help, but see his dedication and love for the event and what it represents. Last year, he walked the “Survivor Lap,” after being diagnosed with Sarcoma, but before the start of his treatment. During that lap, he walked and talked with someone he describes as his angel, Philip White. That was the first time he had met White who had been fighting his own

20

7-year battle with Cancer.

Danielle

Get Involved If you are a Cancer Survivor and would like to be honored at the Relay for Life or if you are interested in participating in the Bartram Trail Relay for Life event, please visit www.RelayForLife.org/BartramFL.

Funds raised by teams before and at the Relay for Life events go

to the American Cancer Society towards cancer research, patient support, prevention, information and education, and detection and treatment.

Throughout Huysman’s surgery, Radiation, and Chemo-

Another friend, Trish, a Breast Cancer Survivor, also stepped up and supported Bjorn during his experience. Perhaps the greatest support and strength came from his partner, Petra, a former nursing teacher, who helped with emotional support and the dayto-day routine of recovering from surgery, treatments, and with his wound-care. Her simple statement of, “I’m loving you through this,” made a tremendous impact on his recovery and gave him strength to

The Perfect Bite | Woodpecker Backyard BBQ

Revisited Woodpecker Backyard BBQ So do you ever take a drive down along the river on State Road 13? It is so pretty with all the big trees and peeks of the river in between. If you have lived here long enough you refer to the area right about where 13 and 16 cross as Orangedale. And I am sure you have driven by this red brick building with a big woodpecker on the side of it over the last year or more and maybe have also seen a bunch of picnic tables outside that are packed with people. If your curiosity has not made you stop and check it out then you are missing out on a real treat! My family and I have been meaning to stop by and it wasn’t until recently that we did, even though I’ve heard that others have been there we just never took the time to try it out ourselves…well let me tell you ....BIG MISTAKE! The place is called Woodpeckers Backyard barbeque and they make everything fresh that day and they sell it until it runs out and believe me it runs out! When you walk in the door you smell all the wonderful smoked meats and see the long picnic tables. They like to serve everything family style and you can even table share if you want which is a great way to meet your neighbors! On the menu you will see choices such as Turkey, Chicken, Sausage, Pork, Ribs or brisket. The turkey and chicken are lean and smoky just how you want them. Each bite is so infused with the smoky flavor that you don’t need any of the delicious sauces on it but you WANT to put some on just to try them! They have 6 different kinds!. Hickory – my husband’s favorite its sweet and smoky, Carolina vinegar is for all those Panther fans that have moved down here a little more to the south. I actually liked this one because I

love vinegar and this sauce is mixed with barbeque, mustard and vinegar. It’s a nice combination for a change in flavor. Then there’s Mustard and Datil Mustard that both have a nice bite to them and the datil pepper adds some heat to the mustardy flavor. The last two are people’s all-time favorites the Datil Barbeque and the Orangedale White sauce (love the name can’t get any more local than that!). I was afraid that the datil barbeque was going to be too hot for me because although I like some heat I don’t want it to be so hot that I can’t taste the flavor of food! Well this is not the case. This sauce is sweet, tangy and just enough heat to let you know that there’s datil pepper in there but it complements the food and doesn’t over power it. As far as the Orangedale White sauce goes… this is made up of mayo, horseradish and some Cajun spices. It’s creamy and full of flavor! Its goes nicely on a beef brisket sandwich which you know beef and horseradish how can you go wrong?? So both the Datil Barbeque and the Datil Mustard sauces are in the process of being bottled and will soon be available to purchase..How cool is that??!

My two favorites were the Sausage and the Fatty brisket. The

sausage is a proprietary recipe (Azar Sausage) and a company has agreed to produce this just for Woodpeckers alone. You can’t get this sausage anywhere else! And boy is it delicious! It is full of spices and pork and when you add little datil mustard sauce, it’s a perfect match. This went fast on our plate that’s for sure. Being the food lover that I am the fatty brisket is so decadent that to me it’s worth my extra workout

A fun foodie fact…

The datil is a very hot pepper. Datils are similar in strength to habaneros but have a sweeter, fruitier flavor. Their level of spiciness may vary from 100,000 to 300,000 on the Scoville scale and mature peppers are about 3.5 in long and yelloworange in color. The majority are produced in St. Augustine. Many myths attempt to explain the origin of the Datil Pepper: some suggest the peppers were brought to St. Augustine by indentured workers from Minorca in the late 18th century,

Physical Recovery from delivery is an important topic that is left out of conversations with the doctor. In my personal and professional experience the follow up postnatal appointment with the OBGYN lacks the discussion of physical recovery. One such problem is Diastasis recti. Caesarian scars, myofascial pain syndrome, and pelvic alignment dysfunction at the sacroiliac joint and pelvis is a common postnatal physical impairment. Pelvic floor pain and dysfunction resultant of scarring, episiotomy, over stretched muscles, spastic muscles, and unbalanced muscle activation is also a physical ailment experienced by many women, but not often brought to the attention of the doctor. This lack of discussion on the patient's side may be a result of a new mother just expecting problems after childbirth and not considering that these physical problems are treatable. Diastasis Recti is the condition that occurs when your abdominals remain split greater than 2 fingers width. Men and women alike suffer this problem. Therefore it is not exclusive to pregnancy. One should see the abdominal edges come back together by 6 -8 weeks, postnatally. Lay on your back, knees bent and lift your head up, if your belly pooches, or domes, then you might have diastasis recti. Genetics play a big part in having a diastasis recti. Many have a misconception that diastasis can be prevented by avoiding such exercises as yoga pose cow and sit ups. The reason for the abdominal split is not so much the movement or exercise as the matter of how the exercise or movement is done. It is the intra-abdominal pressure that occurs in the abdominal cavity that in essence pushes the abdominals apart. So, the rule of thumb during and after pregnancy is to engage the deep abdominal muscle called the transversus abdominus by using a navel to spine activation and

Physical Pain and Dysfunction

avoiding a pushing out of the belly button during any exercise or daily activity. The Tupler technique requires an abdominal binder (I use a belt) wrapped around the abdominals to bring the edges together during deep abdominal exercises such as Pilates. The focus and core strengthening addressed during Pilates exercises address the abdominal separation well. A cesarean should take 6-8 weeks to fully heal. Scar tissue that forms at the surface can also affect the fascia deep in the abdomen, sometimes as deep as the digestive system, affecting digestion and the bowels. Episiotomy scarring can affect the function of the pelvic floor. Nerve pain is common as nerve endings heal, but should not be intense, sharp, and long lasting past 6 months. One year's time may be the maximum time for the scar and nerve damage to recover, but it doesn't have to last this long at an increased intensity of greater than 5/10 pain (10/10 is emergency room pain). The good news is that fascia and scar tissue will change and loosen no matter how old the scar with the help of a trained myofascial therapist. You can massage the scar yourself by moving the scar around in circles, perpendicular to the scar, and lift and roll the scar and the tissue 1-2 inches around the scar. Pelvis bone alignment issues occur due to ligamentous laxity and causes pubis bone pain, tailbone pain, groin pain and low back pain. Pelvic alignment dysfunction can be successfully treated through a physical Therapist, chiropractic, or osteopath. Often, muscle energy techniques can be self-performed at home to re-align the pelvis. Ultimately, after alignment corrections, core strengthening and muscle balancing of tight and under-active muscles will stabilize the pelvis. Finally, pelvic floor dysfunction occurs when the muscles of the pelvic floor are weak,

tight, or there is an impairment of the sacroiliac joint, low back, coccyx and/or hip joint. Pain results in the pelvic floor region, tailbone, sacrum, and hip during sitting and other pelvic floor activities. Myofascial release, pelvic floor training to fully relax and/or contract the region, and specialized pelvic floor biofeedback will treat the pain and dysfunction. A technique called applied kinesiology may help identify muscle weakness and imbalances in this region as well. Pilates exercises naturally address the pelvic floor as a major component in core strengthening and postural support. Placing the pelvis in an elevated position against gravity will naturally activate the pelvic floor during abdominal strengthening. In conclusion, there are many ailments mothers of new babies or young children deal with and are often ignored or set aside as a side effect of becoming a mother. But, many of these physical ailments are treatable once the mother takes charge of her body and makes a decision to note that something just doesn’t feel right. Alerting the proper professional is the next step. Never give up if the initial encounter is futile. It may take some convincing of your primary obstetrician to recognize a physical dysfunction. Abnormal muscle recovery and/or pain is the specialty of orthopedists and physical therapists. Please refer to the resources to help you or someone you care about recover from postnatal physical dysfunctions. A Message From The Vet With Dr. Kathleen Deckard, DVM Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital

Recognizing & Treating Arthritis in Our Pets Arthritis is one of the most common ailments affecting middle aged to senior dogs and cats. It can be a source of chronic pain and negatively affect their quality of life. Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease (DJD), is defined as the progressive and permanent long-term deterioration of the cartilage surrounding the joints. The joints most commonly affected are the hip, knee, and elbow. Contributing factors to OA include genetics, age, bodyweight, gender, exercise and diet. The clinical signs of osteoarthritis usually start with your pet slowing down and may vary in intensity. These signs may include: • Stiffness • Reduced activity levels • Lameness • Difficulty standing, sitting, lying down and squatting • Pain and inflammation in the joints • Difficulty using the stairs • No longer using the litter box (cats) The diagnosis of OA can be made with a combination of clinical signs, a physical examination by your veterinarian and radiographs of the affected joints. Your doctor may also recommend bloodwork to rule out metabolic causes for slowing down and also to screen for the safety of starting certain pain

medications. Once a diagnosis is made, there are many treatments available to help make your pet more comfortable; however, there is no cure for this disease. These treatments can include: • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (carprofen, meloxicam, deracoxib, etc.). • Adjunctive pain medications (amantadine, gabapentin, tramadol) • Joint supplements (chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine sulfate, omega-3-fattyacid supplementation). • Adequan injections that can be given subcutaneously (under the skin) inhibit enzymes that contribute to cartilage degradation and decreases inflammation. Adequan also contributes to cartilage healing by providing the body with the building blocks of cartilage. Finally, this medication improves the consistency of joint fluid, improving joint mobility, and increasing comfort in dogs and cats with OA. • Weight control. An overweight dog places additional force on joints causing more pronounced OA changes and can ultimately be more painful with limited mobility. • Switching to a mobility diet that has extra omega 3 fatty acids and con-

tains high levels of glucosamine and chondroitin. • Activity modification, which means that high-impact activities such as running or jumping should be limited as they can cause more inflammation and pain. These activities should be replaced with more controlled activity like leash walks. Low impact, consistent activity is good to help build the muscles around the joints and will eventually promote joint stability. • Surgical management can be indicated and in some instances the best treatment choice (cranial cruciate ligament rupture) and includes arthrodesis (fusion of joints), total joint replacement surgery, surgical stabilization of instable joints. The important thing to remember is to make your veterinarian your partner in helping your pet achieve a better quality of life. Every pet is different with their severity and each pet responds individually to a treatment plan. Do not attempt to give your pet human pain medication or supplements without the advice of your veterinarian.
