Dear Neighbors, When I saw the photos of our favorite city underwater, homes, galleries, restaurants and beaches tumbled over by mother nature’s force, I feared for the future. But beyond the devastation, the community was nothing less than inspiring as people came together to help one another. It was a wonderful thing to see the positive power of social media and the goodness inside us. In the end, everyone felt blessed to be alive and safe but it was just the beginning of rebuilding lives and businesses in the Ancient City and along the St. Johns River. Many businesses have now re-opened and one way to help rebuild is to go out and see them. (Please find information below about organizations where you may help in recovery efforts or find help if you or someone you know needs it.)

HURRICANE MATTHEW RELIEF

Many organizations have sprung up to help those who lives were destroyed by hurricane matthew, including the Facebook page #StAugustineStrong where you can find out all the different ways to help. Also, the county would like to let people know that a Disaster Recovery Center is now open in the St. Johns County Wind Mitigation Building, located at 3111 Agricultural Center Drive, to help those affected by Hurricane Matthew. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Disaster Recovery Centers serve as one-stop shops for eligible storm survivors seeking one-on-one help. Representatives from the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and various state agencies will be at the center to answer questions and provide assistance. Disaster assistance may include grants to help homeowners and renters pay for temporary housing, essential home repairs, personal property replacement, and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance. SBA offers low-interest disaster loans for businesses of all sizes, homeowners, renters, and certain private nonprofit organizations. SBA disaster loans may cover repairs, rebuilding, as well as the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged real estate and personal property.

The Perfect Bite on CR 210 West By Lori Allen A Local Foodie

Here's the Inside Scoop for Foodies who want to make the most of EATING LOCAL on CR210 West

Here’s a little foodie scoop down here on 210… Its funny how people base their opinion

about a place by sometimes only trying one thing on a menu but sometimes it’s being in the know of what places have to offer that will really grab you. Here’s a few things to try down here on 210. TAPS has some awesome garlic, parmesan wings that are buttery, garlicy with sharp parmesan shavings on top… So good! But if you want something a little tangy and spicy, try the Sweet Thai chili wings. They give you that sweetness with just the right amount of heat! And to make it even better they offer them for $.60 on Thursdays! A basket of those for $6 bucks along with a ton of craft beer choices. You can’t go wrong! HURRICANES is another great plac. Try their blue cheese and jalapeno queso dip. Its melted white cheddar with blue cheese crumbles on top with some Jalapeños for some heat. It comes with homemade chips that have just enough salt on them that keep you wanting more. They also offer seasonal flavored wings which are really cool. Depending on the time of year you can get some Caribbean flavors, some with rosemary and thyme really flavorful something different to try! For the heat lovers they offer the 'Boss sauce' on their regular menu which is a mixture of medium Buffalo sauce and garlic ranch, making the wings somewhat spicy but oh so good! The boneless are pretty tasty as well, not like the frozen kind you get at the grocery store. They are chunky and juicy with all the same choices as the regular wings. Get a basket of them along with the garlic fries. YUM!

WELCOME to the Neighborhood

When You are Craving Authentic Asian

SUMO SUSHI by Debbie Gaylord A little-known fact about me is that I lived in South Korea for three years as an English teacher. I have eaten my fair share of authentic sushi and Asian food and my standards are high. One of my favorite things to do in Korea was to visit the local revolving sushi bar where little color-coded plates of freshly made sushi would literally revolve around the bar and guests would pick their meal. We do not have a revolving sushi bar here but we do have a fresh sushi bar with a chef who makes really good sushi to order right here on 210 at Sumo Sushi & Japanese Steak House. My kids would eat here basically every night if I let them – they are always craving sushi and Sumo Sushi is one of our favorites . I love bringing my daughters for lunch. We sit at the bar where we can watch the sushi chef design our meal. It is truly an art form. Favorites for them are the California roll or spicy salmon roll, while I usually opt for the perfectly shaped sushi nigiri, a slice of fish over sticky rice with a touch of wasabi paste. I like the salmon, tuna yellowtail and eel best. The miso soup offers an excellent complement to the sushi. Sumo also has excellent hibachi options. When we want a fun dinner experience we take the whole family out for hibachi. Sumo has a great atmosphere with neon lighting and the hibachi chef will shoot water into your mouth and do some fancy knife tricks if you are lucky. But beyond the experience the food is flavorful & delicious. On the hibachi menu, you may choose from steak, chicken, shrimp of veggies. Since we have six in our family we usually have a variety to choose from and there is lots of sharing going on. Even then, we usually have leftovers – yum. If you are like me and looking for the authentic taste of Asia – Sumo is perfect for satisfying those cravings. {Location: 107 Nature Walk Pkwy, St Augustine, FL 32092 (904) 230-1999}

Gather Here with Thankful Hearts by Marlene Kenney

Established November 2012

Celebrating 4 Years Connecting the Growing Communities of Northern St. Johns

12 www.stjohnsmag.com

Halloween is over, the ghosts and goblins have gone to rest for another year. Fall is upon us and so is the beginning of the holiday season. This is the time of year when merriment abounds. We make arrangements to be with family and friends. Good meals, parties and celebrations are being planned. We pull out our favorite age old recipes that have been stored away since last year, anticipating the aromatic smells and mouthwatering flavors. Maybe adding one or two new dishes you have been tempted to try. Whether you celebrate a little or a lot, most everyone embraces this time of year for one reason or another. We look forward to football, tailgating, fire pits, fire places, get-togethers, holiday events, sharing, and caring. This time of the year emanates peace, love and joy, comradery, nostalgia, wistfulness, and witticisms. Homes, shops, workplaces and streets are decorated in anticipation. This should also be the time of

the year when we take a moment or two or three to be thankful. Thanksgiving is exactly that. It is the period to be thankful for what we have and who we have in our lives. We all experience ups and downs but at this moment, especially at this time of year and with the recent aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, I hope you envision and focus on the positive. Yes, there are many of us who are thankful on a daily basis but sometimes we get so caught up in the day to day that we can’t see the forest for the trees. This is the time of year to step back and take a look around. Even in the worst of times, there is always something to be thankful for. During this Thanksgiving season, share your goodwill. Help others who may need it a bit more than you. Be kind, be thoughtful, be generous, and most importantly be compassionate; open your heart and help. Pay it forward and be thankful you can.

Move Over Biscuits...

By Nikki-Lyn Holme Local Mom & Realtor at Roundtable Realty

There's a New Salad "Grazer" in Town at Maple Street Biscuit I consider myself a salad snob. Maple Street Biscuit Company makes noshing on lettuce, combined with various textured ingredients, taste like a party in your mouth. Although they made a name for themselves with their decadent, gravy enhanced biscuit creations, I'm very excited to have healthier options at this creative, local establishment. What makes dining here even cooler? Well, aside from their twangy country music, that reminds me of a trip to see Disney's "Country Bear Jamboree," another magical touch is their "Question of the month." It's very personal, and interactive. I love placing my order, and being asked nostalgic or fun, conversation prompting questions, such as: My favorite children's book, last song heard, or favorite band. Such a great ice-breaker when meeting with clients too. Another wonderful part of this dining experience is eating their Mason jar packed salads, and emptying it out on a paper lined, silver tray. The "Grazer” is my absolute favorite: Fresh spinach, sprinkled with chopped pecans, strawberries, avocado, and goat cheese. Drizzled with their homemade balsamic dressing, and complimented by a tiny veggie biscuit, with just enough kick and veggies to “justify” the carbs. Whether I add thick pecan wood smoked bacon or roasted chicken, this salad always gives me a five star vibe for satisfaction, taste, and presentation. By the way, they also offer fried chicken, but I would recommend saving that protein for the RBC: Romaine, Bacon, Cherry Tomato and Cheddar cheese salad. With the holiday season upon us, I love knowing that there we can make healthier choices (if we really want too) by choosing from their “field to fork” section. Clean eating is not always possible, and Maple Street Biscuit Company now offers the perfect fitness-minded, fabulous-foodie options. #Grateful

The Floridian The Perfect Friday Night on the Back Porch by Amanda Wood

16

Imagine walking into a gorgeous, leafy green patio with a southern charm feel and tons of shade. That is what you will see at The Floridian. Inside the restaurant you will find local artwork depicting beach and local art themes with a boat hanging from the ceiling. There is a small, quaint bar located in the back of the establishment with few small tables. Inevitably, you will feel like you are on vacation. The menu boasts fresh, healthy local favorites. Datil BBQ, Not Your Mommas meatloaf, shrimp and sausage pilau, corn bread stack and shrimp and grits (of course). There’s also healthy fare including a delightful Pork Belly Caprese salad with heirloom tomatoes and a delicious southern Belle salad loaded with your choice of meat and peaches, sweet potatoes and candied pecans. They also offer tempeh or tofu as vegetarian options and substitutes. This writer highly recommends the cheese board as an appetizer. It is loaded with cheeses from Sweet Grass Dairy from Thomasville, GA, local FL honey, pecans, apples, peaches and a French baguette. There are daily desserts including seasonal cupcakes, key lime cheesecake and a chocolate coconut pecan bar (is your mouth watering?). They offer several local wines and beer. They have several (7) aperitif/digestive aromatic wine drinks, which include a Madeira Cobbler with ingredients of a fortified wine, seasonal fruits, citrus/vanilla simple syrup and nutmeg (yum). They offer a moderately priced kids menu with staple entrees including quesadilla, chicken, shrimp and ribs. By the way, several menu items can be made gluten free! The Floridian has a reputation of being a fine establishment and appears popular with the locals and tourists alike. They find the finest local, fresh ingredients from local farmers,

PAPPARE PRIMAVERA Choice of blackened Florida shrimp, herb-marinated chicken breast, or tofu served over a bed of zucchini pappardelle "noodles" simmered in a rich ginger and lemongrass coconut sauce with house creamed corn, carrot, sweet potato, and summer veggies. The Floridian is a part of the sustainable food movement, which is quite commendable. It embodies “clean eating” at its best! The atmosphere is nice enough for a Saturday Date night dinner wearing a cute sundress or laid back enough for stopping by on the way back from the beach wearing shorts and a tank. Let's Do Brunch at The Reef by Debbie Gaylord

“We are lucky to be standing here,” said the woman

next to me at the Reef. “This place could have been destroyed by the hurricane but magically it is still here, intact”.

My husband and I were at The Reef for the famous Sun-

day Brunch and I had been thinking the same thing. It was the first St. Augustine restaurant we visited since the storm and as we drove down A1A, lined with rubble and buildings with orange x marks, we were saddened but grateful to see the familiar ship-like exterior of The Reef.

What could be finer on a Sunday morning than escap-

ing for a little day date at a St. Augustine (Vilano Beach) icon. The Reef, known for its casual elegance, is welcoming for families as well as those who wish to linger and enjoy leisurely dining experience with an unmatched view of the sea. We arrived around noon and we were able to get a seat on the patio on this perfect fall day. The downside of patio dining is that we couldn’t listen to the lovely live music inside.

If you haven’t tried Sunday Brunch at The Reef, save up

your appetite and expect to spend a few hours devouring some of the best food in town. (And don’t plan on eating dinner later – you’ll still be full). We began with a Mimosa for hubby and a glass of champs for myself and these were magically refilled by our sweet server whenever their contents dipped below halfway.

I started with the chef’s creations, including datil pep-

per chili, okra and tomatoes, Asian braised short ribs, andouille sausages and peppers and baked manicotti. Stand-outs were definitely the smoky flavor of the datil pepper chili and deli-

18

cious goodness of the Sriracha spiced cheese grits.

Health Next up was the chilled salmon with capers and onion, cooked to perfection, followed by the carving station with a delicious roasted beef, very tender and spice encrusted, with a mild horseradish sauce. My husband loves his omelets so he enjoyed a made to order omelet. Although we did not try it you can order Eggs Benedict from the kitchen as well. We then decided to go to the sweet side and shared some excellent Belgian waffles and cheese blintzes with a light orange zest. We had to go back again to have a few more blintzes because the cheese filling was that good. Lest we not forget the seafood station including crab legs with fresh drawn butter & jumbo shrimp. There was a lovely salad station and extensive cheese offerings, including blue cheese & brie. There was literally everything you might be craving. I tried to space it out so I could have a nibble of everything but I had to skip the salad offered simply because there was no room and I wanted another Belgian waffle! I plan to return to The Reef on a Sunday morning in the near future with all my out-of-town guests as well as in town friends to enjoy another Sunday morning at the beach. So grateful The Reef was spared by the storm. On our way out we purchased a St Augustine Strong T-shirt *The shirts are available at any SAIRA restaurant and proceeds will benefit families severely affected by Hurricane Matthew. Design Trend Watch: Mixing Metals by Crystal Spencer, Room by Room Interiors Crystal Spencer Room by Room Interiors 904.800.9546 Design@RBRinteriors.com RBRinteriors.com

This is the first in a series of articles to showcase current and upcoming home interior design trends. First up: mixing metals. Trendsetting metallic finishes take center stage this Fall and are expected to remain popular throughout 2017. Topping the list are warm gold, brass, and iron. Shiny copper apparently had its moment of fame and has been falling out of favor. Also on the ‘out’ is using matching metal colors; it’s ‘in’ to mix them up!

Mixology Tips

I personally love the mixed-metallic look. It makes a room seem warm and inviting; and it’s sensible! The dining room featured here provides a handsome example of this popular design trend. The room was decorated using a combination of iron, gold, silver, and mercury glass accents. The key to a successful mix is selecting a predominate metal and adding in other metals in smaller amounts. Just make sure the metal colors are spread throughout the room for balance. The dominate metal color should be used to emphasize the focal wall of the room. The gold candle sticks, vase, and decorative tray on the buffet highlights the beautiful artwork and makes the focal wall pop. The gold color also ties in nicely with the yellow upholstered chairs and provides contrast to the dark wood furniture. Metallic framing on artwork and mirrors provides another option to show off a dominate metal.

Metal Mashup

Lighting is a good décor element to mix in for the second layer. A black iron chandelier and wall sconces were used in the sample dining space. Gold light fixtures would have overpowered the room, however, the black metal adds sophistication and style in just the right amount. Small doses of silver are seen in the buffet hardware, in the painting, and in the area rug, which adds interest and depth

20

as the third metal. Nail head trim, pillows, and photo frames are other great ways to mix in small doses of metal. When mixing metals, try to include one element that embodies all three metal colors in order to draw the design together. Mercury glass is a terrific element to use for this purpose. It reflects both silver and gold, and it plays well with bronze and black. The dining table centerpiece bowl is a perfect example of one element that unites them all. Now you know the tricks. Ready to try your hand at mixing metals? Dig out those decor items from the closet (or buy some new ones!), experiment with this new trend and make your room shine!

Aunt Kate's

by Debbie Gaylord

A Taste of Old Florida with all the Charm The setting at Aunt Kate’s gets me every time. Its like going back in time to what I imagine Florida was like in the old days. I love driving down the old beachy road and coming up on those giant live oaks and then to the restaurant set along the intracoastal marshlands. The views are truly spectacular. This is one of our favorite places to bring the kids but we also go on little date nights for just the two of us. Specializing in old Floridian style food, Aunt Kate’s serves a variety of seafood and other tasty dishes. The simple yet incredibly delicious cornmeal crusted fresh caught flounder is one of my favorites - its the whole fish simply prepared. We also love the datil pepper cornbread and clam chowder. The datil peppers are locally sourced. Another thing to try is the pilau (perlo), an old-fashioned Minorcan rice dish. Our kids tried fried gator here for the first time and they say it is delicious. Chef Jake Hollander creates many seafood specialties. On a recent visit we tried the Sesame Seared Tuna. It's a 6oz Ahi tuna steak pressed in sesame seeds and seared to rare, topped with orange teriyaki and an Asian slaw and garnished with crispy wonton strips. And the Cajun

22

Mahi Florentine, a blackened 6oz Mahi fillet topped with a Cajun spiced spinach cream sauce and topped with flash fried leeks. Mouthwatering goodness! Of course, the best way to finish to off your visit to Aunt Kate’s is with a sunset over the Tolomato River and a short walk to soak in the view and help digest your meal. The Blessings of Reiki

by Nancy Cohen RDN, LDN

Fifteen years ago I learned the hands on healing technique of Rei-ki for personal reasons. I had digestive issues and it had soothed my stomach when nothing else would. Rei means 'of the universe' and Ki means 'energy'. I was walking my dogs in NJ and met up with a mom who told me her dog Pep was thought to have cancer. I mentioned that I was able to offer her dog Rei-ki and would she allow me to assist. She said yes and we became friends. Fast forward 13 years later and Pep is still doing well. During the course of our dog walking and friendship I offered this friend Reiki. Eventually she became my student learning the modality of Reiki for herself. She had been unable to conceive children traditionally and wouldn’t you know it, within a few months time became pregnant on her own. Reiki is a gentle hands on healing process that works with the energy fields of the body. It is not a healing modality, but more a gentle technique that improves the flow of chi or ki, the energy flow of the body. It provides a sense of relaxation and promotes well being . Reports of Reiki benefits include help with stress, headaches, insomnia and upset stomach. Reiki was developed in Japan in 1922 by Mikao Usui and was brought to the West in 1937 by Hawayo Takata. It has been growing ever since. It is thought that there are over 1.3 million people in the US who have received one or more Reiki Sessions.

The Reiki Ideals: Just for today, do not anger, do not worry and be filled with gratitude. Devote yourself to your work Be kind to people

St. Augustine Distillery Releases First Bourbon Made in Florida by Kara Pound

The St. Augustine Distillery is proud to announce the official re-

lease date of its eagerly awaited Florida Double Cask Bourbon, the first bourbon to be put into barrel in the State of Florida since Prohibition. Florida Double Cask Bourbon will be available at the distillery’s gift shop on Friday, September 9th from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and select retailers, bars and restaurants shortly after.

“Developed by the best craft distillers in the world, Florida Dou-

ble Cask Bourbon is a celebration of the Sunshine State, its agriculture and unique maritime climate,” said Philip McDaniel, co-founder and CEO of St. Augustine Distillery. “Florida’s year-round heat and humidity ages our bourbon faster and with greater intensity than anywhere in the country. Our distillers have a running joke that our barrels ‘age in dog years.’”

St. Augustine Distillery’s production team utilized several industry

legends to assist in this release. Jake Norris, Founding Distiller of Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, developed the mash bill. Dave Pickerell, former Master Distiller of Maker’s Mark, designed the production facility and guided the final blending.

Florida Double Cask Bourbon is a dark amber, malted bourbon dis-

tilled and bottled on-site using local ingredients to capture the distinctive flavors of the region. The spirits in this first bourbon release range from 16 to 28 months.

“New federal regulations require the ‘stated age’ be that of the

youngest spirit in the blend,” McDaniel explained. “We aged our whiskey in a sequence of new, wine quality 25-gallon and seasoned 53-gallon barrels. To achieve our flavor profile, we hand-selected dozens and dozens of barrels to blend a unique and robust bourbon.”

ABOUT FLORIDA DOUBLE CASK BOURBON • Tasting notes: full-bodied, deep, and complex with notes of caramel, dark fruit, oak and dark chocolate. • Triple Gold Medal winner in the 2016 MicroLiquor Awards and Triple Gold Medal winner for package design. • Bottled at 93.8 proof with 46.9% ABV. • Price in the gift shop will be $50/750 ml.

St. Augustine Hot Toddy Ingredients: 1 tsp. honey 2 oz. boiling water 1.5 oz. St. Augustine Distillery Florida Double Cask Bourbon 3 whole cloves 1 cinnamon stick 1 slice lemon 1 pinch ground nutmeg Recipe: Pour the honey, boiling water, and bourbon into a mug. Spice it with the cloves and cinnamon, and put in the slice of lemon. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes so the flavors can mingle, then sprinkle with a pinch of nutmeg before serving. www.stjohnsmag.com

A Message From The Vet

With Dr. Kathleen Deckard, DVM Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital

Why is My Pet Having Excessive Thirst?

What is normal water intake?

Many pets are seen by the veterinarian for polydipsia and polyuria. The term polydipsia refers to excessive thirst manifested by excessive water intake, which in turn usually leads to polyuria, which is the formation and excretion of a large volume of urine. Polyuria and polydipsia are commonly abbreviated and referred to as PU/PD.

Causes of PU/PD

Polydipsia and polyuria can be caused by simple problems such as dehydration from heat or a urinary tract infection, but can also be an early sign of several diseases, including: • Kidney failure • Diabetes mellitus • Uterine infection if your dog is not spayed (called pyometra) • Liver disease • High blood calcium • Hypothyroidism • Pituitary gland problems (such as Cushings disease) • Diabetes insipidous (Inability of the tubules of the kidney to reabsorb water properly)

Dogs normally take in about 20 to 40 milliliters per pound of body weight per day, or about 3 to 4 cups of water per day for a 20 pound dog. Anything more than that, under normal environmental conditions, is considered polydipsia. You should watch your dog for increased thirst and urinations. Some dogs may begin drinking from a dripping faucet in the sink or from an open toilet bowl. However, if you want to determine how much your dog is drinking, allow him only one source of water and subtract the amount left in the bowl after 24 hours from the amount you put in originally. If you determine that your pet is drinking excessively, make an appointment with your veterinarian. Diagnosis of Polyuria and Polydipsia (PU/PD) One of the first steps in the evaluation of a dog with polyuria and polydipsia is to determine the urine concentration by a test called "urine specific gravity." The specific gravity of pure water is 1.000. Polyuria is suspected if the urine specific gravity is less than 1.035. Several diagnostic tests may be needed to determine the cause of polyuria and polydipsia because many different diseases may cause these symptoms. • Complete medical history and physical examination including palpating the abdomen to check kidney and

liver size, checking for vaginal discharge in females, and palpating the thyroid gland. • The history that includes the determination of drug administration (e.g. diuretics, anticonvulsants, cortisone-type drugs, salt; or recent fluid therapy); reproductive status (i.e. sexually intact or spayed) in females; occurrence of urinary accidents in the house; abnormal odor or appearance of the urine; and the presence of weight loss or gain, appetite change, or any other abnormalities. • Tests to determine the cause for the pu/pd may include a baseline chemistry, complete blood count, urinalysis, thyroid test, urine culture, radiographs, ultrasound, ACTH stimulation test, bile acids test and a variety of other specific tests. Not all tests are necessary for every case so the veterinarian will decide which tests are most likely to yield the diagnosis and most will do testing in a stepwise fashion. If your pet is experiencing the signs of excessive thirst and urination, it is important to seek medical attention to determine the cause because undiagnosed diseases and infections can lead to more serious problems if not treated early.
