Sisterhood How & Why I started a Foundation by Nikki-Lyn Holm So I married a widower. Oh, and I knew his first wife. As scandalous as that sounds, he and I hadn't met until 9 months after she passed. You see, Mary Holm was my Jewelry Lady. She was an energetic mother of 3 little ones, who had decided to trade in her engineering hat for a license to sell sparkles and bling with Premier Designs. Honestly, I always thought Mary was such a beautiful and radiant soul. Although we lived very different lives, since I was a single working mom, I truly admired her, and so we stayed connected via Facebook. It was March of 2013, when she told me, in a very calm and peaceful manner during our phone conversation, that her cancer was back, and she was done fighting it. My heart physically ached as I thought about her young life, and her precious family. I hung up the phone and just wept. Fast forward 9 months later, as fate would have it, I met my husband, Mike, because I "liked" a photo of hers. He shared a sweet and funny message on her Facebook wall. It was super cute, especially since their youngest (Aka: Baby) was crying hysterically on Santa's lap. 'Tis the season of miracles, because two weeks after we connected via Facebook, we met face-to-face. Which actually took place two days before Christmas. After our funny first date...we both knew. Just thirteen days of dating later, and we signed a contract to build a new home. He proposed and we created our "story book" themed, fairy-tale wedding - In just 4 months. It's a good thing I was a wedding planner in a previous life! It really is a small world after all, isn't it? As the "earthly" mom of 3 younger children, plus my own miracle daughter, my hands and heart are very full. Along with managing the most important role of Mom first, I also sell real estate, blog, and earlier this year, I felt a calling to sell Premier

October Deals...

Designs too. Initially, I thought I could never do Premier Designs because Mary sold jewelry. Now, however, I can't think of a better reason than to keep her legacy alive in our family, by sharing the product that initially connected us - in more ways than one. While we are two different people, we have much commonality. The same husband. The same 3 younger children. And a desire to help people...All derived from Love. Before I said yes to sharing Premier, it had been on my heart to bring Mary's foundation desires to fruition. Mary Holm's younger sister Debbie Williams, had died of the same BRAC-1 gene two years before she did. I hope to never be in a situation like this with our younger children, because this type of cancer is hereditary. As many of us know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. With the help of close friends, we have revitalized her foundation vision, which honors both Mary Holm and Debbie Williams. We have named this foundation, "Sisterhood: A Legacy of Love." Our mission is to help cancer patients feel beautiful through hope, faith, strength, and prayers. We aspire to shower women who are undergoing chemotherapy with encouraging pieces of sparkle and bling. We also plan to help families in need financially, as our foundation grows. Our first fundraiser is scheduled on October 18th, 2016 at "Painting With a Twist." The event begins at 6:30pm. Light snacks and beverages will be included. Thank you for your support.

Shearwater officially opens amenities center

Kayak Club

There have been several exciting new developments at Shearwater, the new master-planned residential community on County Road 210, as the community further comes to life. The community has officially opened the Kayak Club, its expansive new amenities center, and has welcomed its Lifestyle Director, Dylan Read, who heads up Shearwater’s event and activity programming for residents. “Shearwater is starting to buzz with activity and families enjoying their new home and lifestyle,” said Read, who visits with residents regularly to develop events and activities based on residents’ desires. “Families have been loving the newly opened Kayak Club, and we have already hosted a number of events that are fostering connections among residents. They moved here to have a stronger sense of community and that is exactly what we help create.” Shearwater’s lifestyle programming further brings the community’s amenities to life with a variety of activities, including annual traditions and signature events to groups, clubs and classes. Shearwater has already hosted S’mores and More, Coffee on the Porch, sports tailgating parties, a running club, fitness classes, tennis lessons, and more. Combined with residents who are happily using the amenities on a regular basis, Shearwater has become a hub of family-friendly activity. “We have always liked the area, but worked here and didn’t live here. We began looking around and found Shearwater, and there is nothing else like it. We heard about the amenities center and now that it is open, it is very nice,” commented Derek Garcia, a new resident who recently moved into Shearwater. “The Kayak Club made the decision for us to move into Shearwater, along with the trails and having the Lifestyle Director on staff…there is already so much to do, with so much more coming.” The centerpiece of the Kayak Club is the Clubhouse, which includes multiple gathering spaces in addition to The Hub, a Wi-Fi café serving coffee, lattes and grab-n-go food items. Shearwater also includes the winding Lazy Bird River—the longest in Northeast Florida; ‘The Perch’—a three-story waterslide tower; multilane lap pool; resort-style lagoon pool; and four illuminated Har-Tru tennis courts,

16

Dylan Read Lifestyle Director including a stadium court. Residents can also enjoy the oversized Fitness Lodge, which includes cardio and strength training equipment and a large group fitness workout area, as well as Wellbeats Virtual Fitness Classes™ on Demand. Plus, 13 miles of paved, natural and boardwalk trails weave throughout the community, with a kayak launch on Trout Creek—with direct access to the St. Johns River—coming in Phase II. Shearwater’s newly unveiled free-range playgrounds are unique themselves, featuring KOMPAN play equipment. KOMPAN works with schools, parks and childcare centers around the globe, and conducts focus groups to follow societal trends in playtime preferences. The company also infuses its education and experience in early childhood development psychology into the design and function of the equipment. Shearwater chose this equipment because, “we believe in their philosophy, which is backed by scientific research: the right amount of play and creativity creates healthier children, social inclusion and more efficient learning,” said Jill Flores, Shearwater’s community director. Overall, it is an exciting time as Shearwater continues to come to life!

Answer:

Hearing aids are technological digital wonders. Hearing instrument’s digital circuitry is specifically designed to improve communication. DecoratingTips For The Fall Season

by Crystal Spencer, Room by Room Interiors

It certainly doesn't feel like Fall when the temperatures are still pushing 90

degrees! So create the Fall mood in your home using creative decorating. Going beyond your front door and the typical theme-driven décor, there are some things you can do inside your home to help set the stage for Fall.

To change up the look in your living room flip out décor items like pillows,

throws and accessories using Fall-like colors and patterns. If your regular décor style is coastal, or your colors are cool grays or soft blues, add in pops of burnt orange or darker reds; or stay neutral using whites and browns. Most of the typical fall colors work nicely with farmhouse-style, as will using neutral, earthy accents. If rustic-glam is your style, add warm metallic colors like dark gold, aged silver or copper. The other big-impact areas to address are mantels and table tops. Decorate

your kitchen, dining and coffee tables, and redecorate your fireplace mantel or tv cabinet shelving. Accessory ideas include: colored or patterned bowls, vases, jars, baskets, or boxes; hardback books (or make your own book covers using scrapbook paper); frames, signs, or canvas with script or prints; small autumn wreaths on a stand; colorful candles and holders. Use these type of accessories as a base for the table or mantle vignettes and then embellish them by adding seasonal décor accents and items.

I love to mix in real/natural elements along with faux seasonal décor items

for the finishing touches. It just looks prettier and, well…more natural! Try mixing in dried wheat stalks, cotton branches, dried bittersweet branches, grapevines, leaves, or dried sticks in your vignettes; pinecones and acorns are nice as bowl or jar fillers. Un-

Crafts with Minorcan Mama

Minorcan Mama, I’m so excited that Fall is here—it’s my favorite season! What are some of your favorite Fall crafts to do with your kids? If they are cheap and easy, even better!

Thanks, Crafty Mama

Hey, Crafty Mama! First, honey, let me tell you, Fall is my favorite, too! I just love the chill in the air, okay, maybe it’s not a chill per se, but us Floridians can tell when the temp drops from 90 to 80, am I right? I love everything about Fall--the beautiful colors, the pumpkins, hot chocolate, campfires, and college football! I also really love Fall crafts! Here are two of my favorite crafts that you can do together, as we did in these photos, or you can do separately. One utilizes apples, which are a Fall favorite and you can do after you visit one of the many fantastic apple orchards in Georgia! The other uses items that are easy to find and *free* and celebrates the beautiful colors of the season! Post some of your kids’ masterpieces over on my Facebook page, “Minorcan Mama!” And share with me some of the Fall crafts you all are doing! Sharing is caring, after all, y’all! Enjoy the Season, MM

Apple Stamping Supplies: Paper, Apples, Paint and bowls or plates, Paint Brushes Directions: 1. Cut apples crosswise, so that the core creates a star shape. Remove any seeds that are showing and blot the apple dry. 2. Set out bowls or plates of paint. 3. Dip apples in paint and then, using the paint brush, spread the paint on the apple. 4. Use the apples as stamps to create pictures and pattern on the paper of your choice. This is also a cool craft to do if you would like to make patterned wrapping papeusing brown butcher paper.

The Colors of Fall Trees Supplies: Poster board or Cardstock, Medium-sized sticks, Paint Chips in Fall colors,

Scissors, Hot Glue Gun , Glue or Glue Sticks

Directions: 1. Prepare your supplies 2. Collect Paint Chips from your local Hardware Store in Fall Colors and then cut individual colors into leaf shapes. 3. If using poster board, cut it into the size you want. I cut it into fourths. 4. Go on a walk 5. Gather your kids together and go on a walk to collect sticks. Use this time to talk about the different seasons and discuss the qualities of Fall. 6. Get Crafty 7. Break sticks into 4”-6” segments and then (adults) hot glue to the poster board or card stock. In these phots we only did one tree, but you can certainly make a forest! 8. Let your kids glue the Paint Chip leaves any way they like on the tree.

Discover Local History and Celebrate Stetson Kennedy’s Centennial by Jennifer Yarbrough Hidden at a slight bend in the road just passed Roberts Road on SR 13 in Fruit Cove is Lake Beluthahatchee. A small, wooden sign marks the entrance to a pine and oak lined path that leads to the lake and two homes now owned and managed by the St. Johns County Recreation and Parks Department. At the park, one can enjoy folk music in an intimate setting on “Second Sundays,” and can look out at the lake and enjoy the serenity of the natural setting, the cypress knees rising up from the water, the moss blowing in the breeze. The setting is ideal and picturesque, inspirational and relaxing. This place is “Beluthahatchee,” which, according to the well-known and celebrated author, Zora Neale Hurston, means “a Florida Shangri-La, where all unpleasantness is forgiven and forgotten.” This “Florida Shangri-La” was home to Stetson Kennedy, a human rights activist, author, and folklorist who spent his life fighting for people and nature. This place, no doubt, provided respite and inspiration for his writing and his cause. October 5th would be his 100th Birthday, so to honor this event, the Stetson Kennedy Foundation and other groups, are marking the occasion with various events at Beluthatchee and other venues. This is a great time to come out to this beautiful park and to learn about a resident that preserved the stories of the Civil War Era as a worker for the WPA, was friends and colleagues with the likes of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Zora Neale Hurston, and Woody Guthrie, infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan, and much more! The following events have been planned to celebrate the Stetson Kennedy Centennial. Make it a point to come out, wander the property, listen to the birds, feel the breeze and learn more Kennedy, the history of our area and the history of our country, maybe you will be inspired to act, too!

Every Sunday in October Beluthahatchee Park will be open to the public from 1pm-4pm. Come view Stetson’s home, as well as another home on the property with educational materials about his life and work. Beluthatchee is located at 1523 SR 13, Fruit Cove, 32259

October 5th Stetson’s Centennial Birthday Bash at FSCJ Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts. This event will include a Reader’s Theatre of, “Stetson Kennedy-Man in the Mirror.” Moonshine

24

Punch and heavy hor d’oeuvres will be served and a Silent Auction will be held. Tickets are available at www.stetsonkennedy.com

October 14th An Intimate Evening with Billy Bragg and Sarah Guthrie presented by the Stetson Kennedy Foundation at Beluthahatchee. Celebrate Stetson Kennedy and Woody Guthrie where they spent time together with Guthrie’s granddaughter, Sarah Guthrie and singer/ songwriter, Billy Bragg performing. Dinner will be prepared by D’Vine Cuisine. For more information on this special event, please visit the Stetson Kennedy Foundation Facebook page, or purchase tickets through EventBrite. 100% of the proceeds benefit the foundation and the continuation of Kennedy’s work for human and environmental rights.

October 15th The 20th Annual MagnoliaFest at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre will celebrate Stetson Kennedy’s Centennial. This Americana and Folk music festival will include such acts as JJ Grey & Mofro, The Infamous Stringdusters, Zach Deputy, Billy Bragg, Sarah Lee Guthrie and This Frontier Needs Heroes. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Stetson Kennedy Foundation. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit www. staugustineamphitheatre.com

October 23rd The monthly “Second Sundays,” concert at Beluthahatchee presented by the North Florida Folk Network, will take place on October 23rd, due to the Stetson Kennedy Centennial celebrations earlier in the month. (It will return to the Second Sunday of each month in Novmeber) Come out to this intimate concert and then tour Kennedy’s property and home on Lake Beluthahatchee. A reservation is required, call (904) 206-8304 and leave a voicemail to reserve your spot. A $10 donation is also required. Beluthatchee is located at 1523 SR 13, Fruit Cove, 32259

Mindfulness & Eating What is mindfulness eating and how can it help me? Mindfulness is the concept of being present in the moment and being aware of all facets of the eating process. Mindfulness continues to gain widespread support to promote health and wellness. Mindful eating is being used as a tool to improve eating behaviors, encourage weight control, prevent chronic disease, and foster a healthful relationship with food. The main principles of mindful eating include being aware of the nourishment available through the process of food preparation and consumption, choosing enjoyable and nutritious foods, acknowledging food preferences nonjudgmentally, recognizing and honoring physical hunger and satiety cues, and using wisdom to guide eating decisions.

Principles of Mindfulness: ••Mindfulness is deliberately paying attention, non-judgmentally, in the present moment. ••Mindfulness encompasses both internal processes and external environments. ••Mindfulness is being aware of your thoughts, emotions and physical sensations in the present moment. ••With practice, mindfulness cultivates the possibility of freeing yourself of reactive, habitual patterns of thinking, feeling and acting. ••Mindfulness promotes balance, choice, wisdom and acceptance of what is. The value of Mindfulness or Mindful Eating is to connect with the reason for eating, the sensation of eating, the feeling of eating in your mind and body and determine if the

Nancy Cohen RDN LDN Nutritionist Feeding the Body feeding The Soul LLC

actual reason for eating is one that is satisfying or of releasing stress. Research has shown that when implementing mindful eating techniques one can choose healthier foods, be more content with their quantities of eating, lower the stress around eating and therefore health and wellness and create greater satisfaction in food selection as well as in promoting a peaceful state of mind.

Someone Who Eats Mindfully: ••Acknowledges that there is no right or wrong way to eat but varying degrees of awareness surrounding the experience of food. ••Accepts that their eating experiences are unique. ••Is an individual who by choice, directs their attention to eating on a moment-by-moment basis. ••Gains awareness of how they can make choices that support health and well being. ••Becomes aware of the interconnection of earth, living beings, and cultural practices and the impact of their food choices on those systems. Mindful Eating is allowing yourself to become aware of the positive and nurturing opportunities that are available through food selection and preparation by respecting your own inner wisdom. By using all your senses in choosing to eat food that is both satisfying to you and nourishing to your body, acknowledging your responses to food (likes, dislikes or neutral) without judgment, and becoming aware of physical hunger and satiety cues to guide your decisions to begin and end eating you can change your relationship to food. www.feedingthebodyfeedingthesoul.com

Grace For Glory How one local organization is doing good in the world

Do you ever feel like you would like to help people in the world who are less fortunate than yourself? That is what inspired Lucia Jessome, owner of Kathy & Lucia Harmony Cleaning in St. Johns to collaborate with the faith-based, nonprofit organization Grace for Glory. Lucia came to the United States from Brazil many years ago. She had seen extreme poverty and understood how blessed she was to be able to start a business here and find success. She wanted a way to give back and found it with Grace For Glory. The organization was started by Kathy Cope in 2004 to help people in Haiti. According to Founder, Kathy Cope, their mission is to help break the cycle of poverty and provide education for future generations. Haiti has one of the highest rates of hunger in the world, with the unemployment rate over 80% and more

than half of all Haitians living on less than one dollar a day or approximately $250.00 US per year. In Haiti, an education is a privilege, not a right. Attending school costs money, money that most Haitians do not have. Grace for Glory assists with providing education, food, and supplies for families living in poverty in Haiti. Each year they ship hundreds of pounds of supplies into Haiti and provides hundreds of meals. Grace for Glory has also started a G3 Superstore that is a currently operating as an Open Air Market in downtown Mirebalais, Haiti. The store is filled with donated items that we ship from the United States to Haiti to be sold. The work G3 Superstore of this organization is quite amazing. If you are interested in donating items for the superstore, please contact expert@ graceforglory.org to coordinate.

A Message From The Vet

With Dr. Kathleen Deckard, Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital

Kennel Cough

Kennel cough in dogs is a highly contagious respiratory disease complex that affects many dogs every year. It causes inflammation in the trachea and bronchi which results in a cough and may at times also causes watery eyes, runny nose and sneezing. There are many different causes for kennel cough which is why it is hard to prevent. Kennel cough can be caused by many infectious agents such as Bordetella, mycoplasma, parainfluenza, adenovirus type 2, influenza, distemper, coronavirus, herpesvirus and many others. Some of these are bacteria and the others are viruses. Although many of our dogs are vaccinated for these, they can still show symptoms of disease. The vaccines are effective at reducing the clinical signs and many times prevent the progression to pneumonia. In these cases, you may only see some mild sneezing and coughing, and the dog recovers without treatment. Puppies and dogs with immune compromise and unvaccinated dogs are at the highest risk for becoming sick from kennel cough. Two strains of canine influenza have been identified, H3N8 and H3N2. Canine influenza is highly contagious and can cause severe symptoms in dogs and is more likely to result in fatality versus the other causes of kennel cough. Dogs that contract the virus have a rapid onset of clinical signs and fever is very common. Luckily, we have not seen a big outbreak of influenza in our area, however once it hits an area, it spreads rapidly and prevention can be too late. The way that the infectious agents are spread is through respiratory secretions. These can be transmitted through the air from sneezing or coughing,

by direct contact between dogs or from secretions left on objects in the environment. The important thing to remember is that dogs that have had kennel cough can be shedding infectious agents for several weeks after symptoms have resolved. This is why it is such a contagious problem. The incubation period after contact with the infection is around 7-10 days. The diagnosis is usually made based on the clinical signs and history of recent exposure to other dogs. In some cases, your veterinarian may want to do blood tests, bacterial cultures or viral PCR tests to make the diagnosis. Dogs that have recently come from a shelter situation are obviously at higher risk than other dogs. Other risk factors include dogs that are boarded, groomed or involved in day care. Treatment depends on the severity of infection. Many dogs only require some minor supportive care or might include antihistamines, cough suppressants and antibiotics. Dogs that are severely affected may require prolonged medication or even hospitalization for more aggressive treatment. Prevention is through limiting exposure by keeping your dog away from any dogs that are not up to date of vaccination, avoiding any dogs showing respiratory signs, avoiding kennels and grooming facilities that don’t require proof of vaccines and quarantining any recently acquired dog. The other way to limit illness is to keep your dog up to date on vaccines. Your veterinarian can discuss your dog’s risk factors to decide which vaccines are recommended for ultimate protection.
