Carol Ann Rice Rafferty

C

arol Ann Rice Rafferty, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1956, combines her love of

art, history and sewing. As a young girl she enjoyed spending hours listening intently to her mother and grandmothers as they shared childhood memories, sang songs they learned as children, cooked favorite family recipes together, and learned to embroider and construct garments. Her mother had a career in fashion which strongly influenced Carol's interest in design and fashion. Carol sewed and knitted her entire wardrobe during her high school years. Her passion is creating trauqil environments, sewing, cooking, and gardening as an outlet for her artistic energy. She earned her degree in Design from Buffalo State College. She remained at Buffalo State teaching in the Fiber Program as an Adjunct Instructor continuing to build the pro-

Carol's art has recently been published in the

book 500 Paper Objects. Her work has been accepted into Fiberarts International 2007, Craftforms 2006 as well as numerous juried shows in Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Carol left her teaching position after two years to study in the graduate Fibers Program at Savannah College of Art and Design. She offers college level classes in fiber reactive dyes, painting, papermaking, shibori, weaving and other fiber techniques at her home studio in Clarence, NY.

Senior Living Tips

Travel

By Jennifer Logue, Firstlight Home Care

A

n estimated 34 million Americans were expected to travel over the Labor Day weekend. Many of them will soon be among the 46 million people who travel more than 50 miles from home for Thanksgiving. For seniors, however, traveling can present some additional challenges. Here are a few suggestions for arranging stress-free senior travel:

PLAN AHEAD:

Seniors who have trouble walking or use a wheelchair may wish to contact the airline, train station, cruise line or other mode of transportation to find out what type of assistance is available on their end. Many forms of transportation also have different rules about transporting oxygen. A few calls in advance can ensure that senior travelers receive the help they need to make their journey safely and comfortably.

TAKE A COMPANION:

Many home care companies provide companions who can assist or even accompany seniors on their vacations or other journeys. From driving seniors to the airport and assisting them to their gate to accompanying them on a weeklong cruise, companion caregivers can make senior travel that much safer and more enjoyable.

8

BE A SAVVY SCHEDULER: When possible, book a non-stop flight to avoid lengthy layovers and the need to walk long distances between gates at multiple airports. In addition, try to avoid making your journey during peak travel times. Travel mid-day and you’ll avoid rush-hour traffic, long lines at check-in counters – and a lot of stress!

PACK WISELY: Store prescription medications in their labeled bottles in a carry-on bag along with travel documents and needed cash, ID and credit cards. Check the remainder of your luggage and you’ll save yourself the chore of hoisting bags into and out of overhead bins and dragging them through airports.

Auto I Home I Business

CHECK OUT SENIOR PERKS: Many travel

agencies and membership groups such as AARP offer discounts to seniors on hotels, transportation and more. Another bonus: Seniors age 75 and over no longer have to remove their shoes or light jackets at TSA checkpoints! Jennifer Logue is the owner of FirstLight Home Care, a non-medical home care company serving residents of St. Johns and Duval counties. pause and look and listen and view the beauty of nature. With all of this natural beauty, it is no surprise that local artists are inspired to create!

The two artists profiled below took different paths to find themselves here in Northeast Florida, they use different

mediums to express their creativity, but they both have a passion for looking around them, capturing what they see and sharing it with others.

HOW OUR LOCAL COACHES TO MOTIVATE ATHLETES

chool is back in session, Fall is just around the corner and with that comes Fall Sports at our local schools. How do coaches prepare student-athletes for action on the field and how do they motivate students to be the best they can be in the classroom and beyond? We put those questions and more to a few local High School Coaches to find out.

that will help build good character. Participation in athletics doesn’t build character, it provides opportunities to ‘choose the difficult RIGHT over the easy WRONG.’” It is a goal to see the team be great football players, but even better young men.

Team Motto: “Semper Virtus” which means “always excellence,” and Coach Sutherland and the coaching staff encourage the team to pursue excellence in every area of their lives… all the time.

COACH DARRELL SUTHERLAND Coach Sutherland, Bartram Trail High School Football Coach, teaches Teen Leadership and English III classes. His Football Philosophy is to teach boys to be “Men built for others,” through the vehicle of team sports. He, along with his coaching staff tell the players that “it’s not about what you get, but who you become.” One way of preparing players for the game and life is by reminding them to focus on their attitude and effort because those are under their control. When asked how football can help students off the field in school, college or beyond, he states that it can, “only if they choose to make decisions

Motto: “Take care of the little things, and the big things will take care of themselves.”

COACH JEFF SCHAUM

COACH PAUL NOWICKI Coach Nowicki is the Head Coach of the Boy’s Cross Country and Track and Field Teams at Bartram Trail High School. He looks to the words of Theodore Roosevelt for his coaching philosophy, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” To prepare athletes physically and mentally for competition, he stresses the importance of the summer session. Since the sport receives little or no publicity, he states that student motivation for the

Coach Schaum is the Football Coach at Creekside High School. His coaching philosophy is, “Do what your players can do. Put your players in positions to be successful.” He motivates them to excellence by encouraging them and having fun. A winning season to him is one where everyone is playing their best and improving every day. He encourages the “Knights Code of Honor,” and the TOTAL Team Concept with his players, allowing for them to work together and grow with character and honor.

COACH AUDREY HOLTZ Coach Holtz is the Head Volleyball Coach at Bartram Trail. When asked about her Coaching Philosophy she states that, “Before anything in the world that I would like to teach them in the game of volleyball, I’d like to teach them how to have good character; how to be leaders; how to be proactive and good citizens. I want them to be able to be organized, and stay disciplined with time. I want them to do good when no one is watching, and be able to be assertive and stand up when something isn’t right. Confidence is the root of what we do- build these girls up, so they know how to succeed. Help them through tough times and how to recover. We want to help them find their worth and establish their values. We respect them, and always strive to act in ways that will show them that we care.” She encourages players to adopt a healthy lifestyle year round, including rest, diet, health, exercise and conditioning so that they will be physically prepared for a new season. To prepare mentally, she advises to strike a balance year round between fun and sports—take the time to be a kid! Since Volleyball is a team sport, it helps students off the field, “strategizing and working cooperatively to reach a goal.” It also teaches timemanagement and discipline.

True Beauty Is Forever The Art of Eberth Perez Butterfield Garage, September 2015

E

berth Perez, whose art is informed by the rich aesthetic and cultural traditions of Spain, will be the featured artist at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery during September, in celebration of the city’s 450th birthday. The exhibition will open during the First Friday Art Walk on September 4, a special all-day event from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Profoundly influenced by his Spanish ancestry, Perez is best known for his oil paintings and drawings of precisely rendered classical subject matter, often combined with elements of photorealism or the startling juxtapositions of surrealism. His work is designed to evoke thoughtful interpretation and, in his words, “a true appreciation for Good Art, Culture and Beauty.” “Art has always been more than just a good painting to me,” he explained. “It must have heart and soul, life and realism, inspiring a creative response from the spectator the gallery or in the home.” Perez is also a master portraitist, rendering his subjects in compelling graphite and pencil drawings that reveal depth of character. As a child growing up in Cuba he would always rather be drawing than playing a game, he remembered, and so with his parents’ full support, he began art classes in Havana at the age of

St. Johns Magazine 904-687-8538

twelve and continued his art studies in Spain when his family immigrated a few years later. Returning to Cuba, he earned a degree in fine art from the highlyrespected Academy of Drawing and Painting of San Alejandro and worked as a restorer of oil paintings at the National Museum of Fine Art in Havana. He continued his art career in Caracas, Venezuela, before moving to Florida and working as a scenic artist for Walt Disney World in Orlando. “Now I call St. Augustine home,” he said, “now I am dedicating my life to my art.” Perez has been influenced by a number of European classical artists including not only the Spanish masters Velazquez and Murillo, but also Bosh, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Durer, Caravaggio and Rembrandt. His work has been exhibited in Havana, Caracas, Madrid and Mexico City, as well as in cities throughout Florida. The exhibition will continue through September 29 at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery, 137 King Street, St. Augustine. The gallery is open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For further information, please call 904- 825-4577, visit the website at www.butterfieldgarage. com, or contact Jan Miller at janmille@ bellsouth.net Butterfield Garage Art Gallery September 4 - 29, 2015.

MARKLAND

Reflects the historic grand homes of St Augustine.

H

ines, the international real estate firm, revealed artistic renderings of the amenities and entrance designs for Hines’ new signature development, Markland, located in St. Augustine, FL. Markland’s amenities and landscaped entrance have been artfully designed by Basham and Lucas, the architect of the Manor House, and Prosser, Markland’s landscape architect and community planner. Prosser and Hines have carried forward the successful design partnership behind the innovative community plan and landscape designs that distinguish Palencia, another St. Johns County community created by Hines. Basham and Lucas will add the Markland Manor House to an impressive architectural portfolio including the Sweetwater Clubhouse and Eagle Landing amenity center. The Markland Manor House, the amenity centerpiece of the community, has been designed in a classic, Greek Revival style, reflective of the historic grand homes of St Augustine. The first floor will contain an expansive, yet warm, gathering room that opens to the pool grounds and a communal card and game room. The second floor will be dedicated to residents’ health with a comprehensive array of strength and aerobic equipment, free weights and a yoga/spin studio. The artist’s sketch of the pool and tennis grounds is representative of the view that residents will enjoy from the fitness center. In the foreground, two large cedar pergolas, three canvas cabanas, and lush landscaping are notable design features that frame the pool and paver deck. The pool is designed with a large zero-entry area as well as a deeper section for lap swimming and lounging on broad steps. Beyond the

22

pool deck, an event lawn framed by majestic date palms, tennis courts and a lakeside fire pit, will be the staging area for numerous daytime and evening events for residents that will be hosted by Hines and Markland’s builders. Extensive formal landscaping will accent the brick and stucco finishes that will combine to form the walled entry to Markland. The wall will continue from the entrance along the full length of the Markland border with International Golf Parkway with new landscaping and existing trees to buffer traffic from the community. Once off of International Golf Parkway, guests will be greeted at the gatehouse and then meander along the curved arrival court to discover an elegant processional of crepe myrtles that lead one’s eye to the stately edifice of the Manor House. Each of Markland’s accomplished builders will provide a staffed model home offering prospective homebuyers a range of home sizes and architectural styles to guide their home selection and design process. Several architectural themes will be thoughtfully mixed throughout the community which will provide homebuyers with a diverse, yet complementary, offering of homes. Formal lawns and landscaping will accent the classic architectural detailing of the community’s homes to create a distinct and elegant new home community. The builders will initially offer homes from the low $300,000’s to over $600,000 on spacious lots that are oversized when compared to the market norm. Model homes are expected to start later this summer and be completed in late 2015 and early 2016. In the interim, more information can be obtained by visiting and registering at the community website, www.markland.com, or calling (904) 513-5740. MERA SURFBOARDS: A story of courage, resilience & family. by Jennifer Yarbrough The story of St. Augustine Beach-based MERA Surfboards is one of courage, resilience and family. Owner, David “Ben” Tiller’s love of surfing began when he was fifteen years old, but had little opportunity to actually get in the water. As the years went on, he found himself in the US Army, then back home as a husband, father and police officer. Not having the chance to hit the water, he kept up with all things “surfing” through magazines and the internet. During his time as a police officer, he also worked undercover for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. On April 28, 2011, during one of these operations, he found himself in a precarious situation, he and his fellow agents exchanged gunfire with the two criminals and Ben’s femur was shot in half. The shooting, surgery, recuperation and post-traumatic stress counseling all pointed Ben in one direction: the ocean, surfing, and more specifically, surfboard “shaping.” Ironically, it was internet “surfing” while homebound that allowed him to learn more about the time-honored art of surfboard shaping. It was there that he bought a “Build Your Own Surfboard Kit,” and hobbled to the garage on his cane to work on it. This time in the garage was his solace, his escape and

his chance to reflect. Thoughts of his family and the water were most important to him and he decided that he would make them a priority. He returned to work as a police officer for a time, shaping as a hobby. Eventually the desire to create boards and share that with others won out and he created MERA Surfboards, with each letter in the name standing for one of his children: Madison, Ethan, Riley and Abigail. It was the thought of his children and the water that helped him through and it is now that sense of family and surfing that he wants to share with the community. He currently crafts boards out of his garage on St. Augustine Beach, but has plans to open a surf shop, The Shapers Sanctuary, where people can, with the help of himself and Master Shapers, create their own boards. He speaks with passion of being able to paddle out into the sea, at one with mother nature, on a board that you shaped with your own hands. If you would like more information, please visit www.merasurfboards. com, check out “MERA Surfboards” on Facebook or, if you would like to contribute to the “Shapers Sanctuary,” visit www.gofundme.com/merasurfboards.

A Message from The Vet Dr. Veling, DVM Palencia Pet Clinic

Recent History of Pet Vaccination Protocols PART ONE

F

or a practicing veterinarian, balancing pet disease protection through vaccination use with safety can be a very difficult decision. One of the most important facts about vaccinations is that whether the vaccine used is intended for dogs, cats or children, vaccines have saved millions of lives. They are a necessary medical procedure for every dog, cat and child in the world. There is no location in the world that does not have viral disease come through at some point that is life-threatening to the pet. Here in Saint Augustine, unvaccinated dogs have come down with Parvovirus, Rabies and Distemper. Unvaccinated cats commonly come down with upper respiratory viruses, Feline Distemper and Rabies. When I was practicing in Indianapolis a 9 year old Pomeranian was brought to me with severe vomiting with bloody diarrhea. It was severely dehydrated and cold. We did a test for Parvovirus that came back positive. When confronted with the news the owners admitted they had never had the dog vaccinated. They felt that, because the dog never left their property, only going outside to relieve itself, there was no way for it to get a disease. It died later that day. Parvo is completely preventable through vaccination. Experts in immunology warn veterinarians that there are pets who do not respond to vaccinations that still come down with these viruses. I will tell you that I have never seen a non-responder, i.e. all the pets I have properly vaccinated have been disease-free. Vaccinations are the best investment you can make in a pet to get it to age 15. With the above discussion completed, what is the history of vaccine use? A retrospective study of the medi-

Parent & Teachers SUBMITTED” by Teri Wesselman, Owner of Brain Balance

W

orking together with your child’s teacher is one of the best ways to ensure your child is getting the most effective school support for his/her learning challenges. Make the most of parent teacher conferences with these tips to make parent-teacher communication easier and more efficient. Communicate Early Ignoring your child’s problems is not helpful. If the teacher has not initiated contact, feel free to do so yourself. Many teachers will send home a handout noting how and when it’s best to communicate with them. Alternately, you can contact the school office. Be in Touch Regularly Regular communication with the teacher is important. There are several ways to do this: Face-to-face meeting: Go prepared with a list of specific concerns you want to discuss. Phone calls: Find out the most convenient time to phone the teacher. For example, don’t try to call to speak during class hours. Written notes or emails: Keep these short and to the point. If necessary, request a meeting to discuss your concerns further. Converse Respectfully Staging a confrontation with your child’s teacher will achieve nothing except to raise negative emotions. Instead, treat the teacher with respect and allow your child to witness this behavior. If you belittle a teacher in the presence of your child, your example will

more than likely make the task of teaching even more difficult! Build a good relationship with your child’s teacher. Even if you’ve got bad memories of your childhood teachers or have had problems communicating with schools before now, leave all that baggage behind and concentrate on the future. Collaborate with the Teacher According to Kristen L. Hodnett in her article, Why It’s Important to Partner With Your Child’s Teacher, reaching out to the teacher will help your child feel more positive about learning and help the teacher understand your child better. Collaboration and brainstorming ideas with the teacher is a more successful approach than lecturing the educator on how you think your child should be taught. Remember that although you know your child well, the teacher has had formal training in how to get concepts across to a class. Work together on the best ways to connect with your child, both at school and at home. Keeping the parent-teacher communication ongoing and positive is key when you’re getting help for a student with special needs. Remember that you’re all working toward the same goal: to empower your child with knowledge in the best way possible.
