“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.”

HIGH QUALITY PET MEDICINE AT A GP, WITH A FOCUS ON THE FUTURE!
photos by Ozzy Trevino Photography
Dr. Kathleen Deckard DVM, is a tenured Veterinarian of 24 years in practice. She has built her career on a foundation of high quality pet medicine, with a special focus on patient care and owner education. Her practice, Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital is designed and operated with these key areas of focus in mind. But it doesn’t stop there. The “Added Value” efforts of Dr. Deckard are pathway drivers in our industry, as she endeavors to influence and propagate the same quality medical focus in the lives of others aspiring to be in our industry, as she provides for her patients. In 2014, Dr. Deckard began to lay the plans for a new state of the art

Our Hospital technicians manage as “traffic controllers” for all details coming and going through the hospital, including all medical pre and post surgery, as well as medical boarders. Dr. Deckards two, on-duty, hospital managers are focused on all client contacts, surgery focused details and DVM and hospital team needs. There is a dedicated surgery team of technicians, who are focussed specifically on our two surgical suites, and the CT Scan room to allow our daily surgery DVM to remain with a dedicated team for all surgeries, dentals, CT Scans, Fluoroscopy scans, ultrasounds, and other surgery focused procedures. This Hospital positional design is unique to Pets R Family, and is one with proven results, as designed by Dr. Deckard.
When setting a plan for her DVM Team, Dr. Deckard wanted to ensure two key elements. First, she wanted to have a team in place to focus on patient care, while being very involved in client education. Secondly, she wanted to allow a congruent level of DVM care, that allowed clients to have limited need for “my favorite Doctor”, as they are supplied with the same high level of medical care across the team. Dr. Deckard works diligently to keep all of her Team up to date and on the same page when it comes to all medical protocols, products to be used, most effective drugs and treatments, and client and patient care techniques. Our medical DVM leaders at PRF are constantly on the leading edge of the most up to date medical treatments, drugs and procedures available in the industry.
Our medical DVM leaders at PRF are constantly on the leading edge of the most up to date medical treatments, drugs and procedures available in the industry. The amazing passion of Dr. Kathleen Deckard is not only for high quality pet medicine and the client experience. She also recognizes the real need for her industry that is in a very high DVM attrition rate, with a huge influx of new pet owners. Dr. Deckard has always had a strong desire to share with others the opportunity that this industry brings in career. She has designed a program specific to Pets R Family called “Vets N Training”. This program is for young students, ages 612, who have a desire to see what it is like to work in the Veterinary Industry. The classes take place every Tuesday after school at the PRF practice. Classes vary from “Bandaging and First Aid” to “Parasites and Vaccines”, but all curriculum is written and designed by Dr. Deckard and her daughter, Abigail Deckard. The goal of this teaching of young students is to grow the desire and understanding of the industry for application in studies and focus as the students move toward High School and College course structure. To date, Vets N Training has taught and guided hundreds of students through the program.
DVM Team at Pets R Family
Management Team at Pets R Family The school system in Saint Johns County is known for it’s leading edge “Academy” focus at the High School level. In addition to many other professional focused academies, the newest academy to have opened just a few years ago, is the Academy of Veterinary Medicine at Beachside High School, which is the only Veterinary focused Academy in the country. Dr. Deckard was instrumental in lobbying for this Academy to begin while still in the ideation stages. She now serves on the academy’s Board of Directors as a voting member and supporting curriculum professional. In addition, Dr. Deckard has hired several of the Academies students to begin their industry work at Pets R Family, and has approved many other interning students who are beginning their hands on experience in the industry where they hope to dedicate their careers. Certainly training, guiding and directing this age group will be a catalyst to feeding undergrad and postgrad focus in the veterinary field of study. Dr. Deckard recognized that there are many outside the veterinary industry who have the desire, drive and passion to work in it, but have never had the opportunity to submerse themselves into a veterinary practice setting. Our military branches are full of individuals who have served their country for a number of years, and are then preparing to leave that career and move into civilian life. Dr. Deckard was instrumental in approving and managing the ramp up of the “SkillBridge” program with the United States Military, at our practice. Pets R Family is the first and currently the only Veterinary Practice approved by all branches of the Military to administer training to personnel preparing to retire from their military service and enter a professional position in the field of veterinary medicine. Pets R Family was approved by the US Military branches in 2022, and has 4 current military members actively being trained at the PRF Practice, with 4 prior graduates completing the approved training program. Each candidate receives an interview at the conclusion of their training to potentially be hired to become a full-time employee at Pets R Family as their first position in the industry. Dr. Deckard is involved day to day with the training protocols, scheduling and ongoing medical input for these candidates. She has stated that these are some of the most passionate, determined and results driven people she has ever had the opportunity to work alongside. Dr. Deckard has not only had an amazing impact on her local community with her passionate focus on quality pet medicine and client care, but she has also continued to focus on the future of the veterinary industry. Her desire to see professionals trained and prepared for a career in the field she has loved for over 24 years, has led her to design pathways for entry, and impact those with interest. Dr. Kathleen Deckard is an innovator in an industry built on new ideas, with a fresh outlook on bringing dedicated professionals to it.

MINDFUL EATING:
Savoring the Holidays with Joy and Balance DR. CHAKA BRITTAIN DNP, AGPNP-BC W E L L N E S S
E X P E R T
‘Tis the season of joy, laughter, and celebration! This is a time when holiday feasts and indulgences are abound. As a lifestyle and obesity medicine specialist, I understand the challenges that can arise when trying to maintain healthy eating habits during this festive season. But fear not! By embracing the practice of mindful eating, you can navigate holiday parties and dinners with grace, enjoying the festivities while honoring your well-being. Mindful eating is the art of being fully present and aware of our eating experience. It involves paying attention to our body’s signals of hunger and fullness, as well as the taste, texture, and aroma of the food we consume. By cultivating this mindful approach, we can foster a healthier relationship with food and make conscious choices that align with our well-being. Here are 3 practical tips to help you practice mindful eating during holiday gatherings: 1. Prioritize Mindful Connection: The holiday season is not just about the food; it’s about connecting with loved ones and creating memorable experiences. Engage in conversations, share laughter, and soak in the joy of being together. By prioritizing mindful connection, you can find satisfaction beyond the plate and savor the true essence of the holiday season.
Health & Wellness Services • weight loss + health coaching for women • lifestyle medicine + primary care • women’s health and hormone replacement therapy
Guided help for your weight loss journey
2. Pause and Reflect: Before reaching for seconds or indulging in another treat, take a few deep breaths and ask yourself if you are truly hungry or if you are simply eating out of habit or social pressure. Give yourself permission to decline food that doesn’t truly satisfy you or align with your health goals. 3. Find Balance: Holidays are a time to indulge, but it’s essential to strike a balance. Fill your plate with a variety of nourishing foods such as colorful vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Allow yourself to enjoy small portions of your favorite holiday treats without guilt; savor the experience without overindulging. 0 7
The holiday season doesn’t have to be a time of dietary distress or regret. Practice mindful eating so you can fully participate in the festivities while nurturing your well-being. By doing so, you’ll create a harmonious relationship with food and ensure that your holiday season is filled with joy, gratitude, and mindful nourishment.

Hugs Across the County
Mandarin Food Bank
Right here in St. Johns County, roughly 800 students are considered homeless, and thousands more are living at or below the poverty line. Every day, these children attend school with empty stomachs… or shoes that don’t fit….or worn clothing. Students do not have books to read at home, or funds for field trips, or access to mentors. From Ponte Vedra Beach to Nocatee, from Julington Creek to Fruit Cove, from St. Augustine to Hastings, thousands of our youngest neighbors have basic, unmet needs. https://www.stjohnshugs.org/
Our mission is to provide emergency food and clothing to those in need in the Mandarin Community. We are a ministry run entirely by volunteers. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, we provide a box of food for a complete holiday meal, serving about 400 families at each event. https://stjosephsjax.org/mandarin-food-bank
Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation
By providing lifesaving equipment and needed resources to first responders and public safety organizations, we help them to be better prepared to save lives in the communities they serve. https://firehousesubsfoundation.org/
St. Johns CARES St. Johns CARES, Inc. (formerly JCP CARES) is a nonprofit organization committed to helping local charities in St. Johns County. We provide assistance to local charities and those in need through donations and time. COCKTAILS TO PAIR WITH ICONIC CHRISTMAS MOVIES ABC FINE WINES & LIQUOR
The countdown to Christmas is on, and that means Buddy the Elf and Bing Crosby have taken up permanent residence in our homes and on our TV screens. ‘Tis the season to eat, drink and be merry, so we’ve come up with festive cocktail recipes to sip as you watch iconic Christmas movies this holiday season.
Elf: Maple Bourbon Coffee Syrup in coffee?! Why didn’t we think of that? Enjoy Buddy the Elf’s favorite food group in this spiked coffee recipe. For the ultimate themed pairing, enjoy with a hot plate of spaghetti (chocolate syrup, marshmallows and Pop Tarts optional).
Add coffee, milk, vanilla extract and ground cinnamon to a slow cooker. Heat on low for 1 ½ hours. Add in bourbon. Serve in heat safe glasses and top with whipped cream and cinnamon.
Oh fuuuuuuudge...this boozy hot chocolate recipe is all we want for Christmas. Make this spiked recipe with meatloaf (double beat loaf) and curl up on the couch for instant holiday coziness. Go on, we triple dog dare ya to make this.
MISTLETOE MARGARITAS The Recipe: ·2 cups Los Rijos Silver Tequila ·1 cup Charles Regnier Triple Sec ·2 ½ cups cranberry juice ·1 ¼ cups lime juice ·1 cup simple syrup ·Sugar & Fresh cranberries Combine chilled liquid ingredients in a pitcher and stir. Coat rims of serving glasses in lime juice and dunk in sugar. Roll fresh cranberries in sugar and add to drink for garnish. Serves 10. Whatever’s playing on the Hallmark channel, watch it with a tall Mistletoe Margarita in hand. Take a sip every time an almost-kiss is interrupted, a spontaneous snowball fight breaks out or the big shot businesswoman turns down a promotion to settle into a quiet, provincial life with a rugged guy after discovering the true meaning of Christmas. If you prefer a glass of wine over a mixed drink, Hallmark actually has their own line of festive wines! Try sipping Jingle Cabernet Sauvignon or Joy Sauvignon Blanc during your next Hallmark marathon.
White Christmas: White Christmas What better drink is there to sip while watching White Christmas than a cocktail of the same name? Just be sure not to spill this creamy amaretto martini as you tap dance and sing those iconic four-part harmonies. And if anyone asks why you chose this recipe, just say it was given to you by an old pal in the army.

means to create this festive experience. Many families in our community struggle to make ends meet, which can make the purchase of holiday presents an unaffordable luxury. Through the First Coast YMCA’s annual Holiday Giving, we aim to support families by providing them with the resources to have a fruitful and memorable holiday season. At the heart lies the Holiday Giving Tree. Each year, we set up trees at our branches, which are adorned with ornaments representing the wishes of children from families in need. Generous supporters can purchase the gifts listed on these ornaments and return them unwrapped to the YMCA, where they are thoughtfully distributed to families in need. The program goes beyond simply providing gifts; it seeks to empower families to create their own magical holiday experiences. The YMCA carefully selects families from its afterschool programs, financial assistance recipients and other identified need-based programs. This ensures that the gifts reach those families most in need.

HOW YOU CAN HELP The First Coast YMCA invites the community to join our Holiday Giving Tree. If you're eager to make a significant impact while fostering a sense of community and compassion, visit your local YMCA branch and look for the tree set up in the lobby. Donations can also be made through the YMCA's website at fcymca.org/donate. Your contribution, no matter how small, has the power to brighten a family's holiday and create lasting memories. Together, we can ensure that every child experiences the magic of the holidays while creating memories that will last a lifetime.

THE ST. JOHNS CULTURAL COUNCIL
Celebrating the Arts and Heritage of Florida’s Historic Coast T
he St. Johns Cultural Council is the local arts agency for Florida’s Historic Coast – St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, and all of St. Johns County. We support individual artists and arts organizations, and present a variety of unique cultural opportunities so residents and visitors can experience high-quality arts, culture and heritage programming. We provide funding for artists and arts organizations: in 2024, the Cultural Council will award over $1,000,000 in grants and marketing support to nearly 40 local artists and organizations. These grants support music and literary festivals, museum exhibitions, art installations, theatrical performances, and arts education in St. Johns County schools. Funding for the grants comes from a variety of sources, including individual donations, tourist development taxes, State of the Arts license plates on vehicles registered in St. Johns County, and a competitive grant award to the Cultural Council from the National Endowment for the Arts. Through a contract with St. Johns County, the Cultural Council creates arts, culture, and heritage publications, events, and exhibitions that are promoted to tourists, and provides support to other presenting organizations.
Our websites, social media, newsletters, and cultural guides tell hundreds of thousands of people across the country and internationally about all the cultural happenings in our region. Most recently, the Cultural Council published Taste Through Time, a culinary guide to St. Johns County, available online and at visitor information centers throughout Florida. View the online guide at https://mydigitalpublication. com/publication/?i=806158.
We work with local groups to produce events including the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival, the SEA Community, Gullah Geechee Heritage Festival, and St. Augustine PoetFest. In 2024, we will coordinate celebrations for important anniversaries like the 250th anniversary of William Bartram’s travels in Florida in the Spring; the 60th Anniversary of the St. Johns County civil rights demonstrations in June; and 100 years of St. Augustine’s association with Aviles, Spain during Hispanic Heritage Month in September and October. We’ll recognize the 100th anniversary of the St. Augustine Art Association, the 150th anniversary of the St. Augustine Lighthouse, and other organizations having milestone years. Each fall, the Cultural Council receives nominations for the Recognizing Outstanding Women in the Arts (ROWITA) awards for women who have made significant contributions to the arts in St. Johns County through their work, leadership, or philanthropic support. The
26
ROWITA Junior Fellowship Award provides support and recognition to graduating high school students for visual, literary, and performing arts. The Cultural Council recognizes the recipients at a public celebration held in March each year. The Council’s Art in Public Places initiative showcases the work of local artists at the Rotunda Gallery of the St. Johns County Administration Building with three to four exhibitions each year featuring art in a variety of media, including painting, textiles, and photography. Catalogues are created for each exhibition and may be viewed online at stjohnsculture.com. The Cultural Council maintains two cultural arts facilities in historic structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The St. Augustine Beach Hotel, a two-story coquina building located immediately south of the St. Augustine Beach pier, houses The Dance Company and The St. Augustine Beach Art Studio on the first floor. The Cultural Council has received grant funds to restore the outside of the building by summer 2024 and is currently seeking grants and other funding to restore the second floor for use as artist studios, exhibition and classroom space, events, and meetings. The Cultural Council offices are in Uptown St. Augustine at The Waterworks, a building that was originally the City’s first public water source. Each year, the auditorium of The Waterworks hosts hundreds of activities including concerts, theatrical performances, lectures, art workshops, children’s programs and more. We welcome you to contribute to the arts in St. Johns County with volunteer service and taxdeductible donations. Contact info@historiccoastculture.com to learn more about all the ways you can get involved.

St. Johns Botanical Garden & Nature Preserve The St. Johns Botanical Garden & Nature Preserve (SJBGNP) is all about conservation of rare and endangered species of plants from around the world, as well as natural resources and native plants and animals.
F
ounder and Resident Biologist, Dr. John Rossi welcomes visitors to this hidden oasis for animal and plant lovers.
The young St. Johns Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve is St. Johns county's newest attraction. Originally begun as a private collection of palms from around the world, it has metamorphosed into a beautiful tropical garden with the largest collection of palms in Northern Florida. They and hundreds of other tropical plants are protected by and made even more beautiful by the massive oaks on the property. Because of the unique natural habitat in the preserve, combined with the tropical and desert plants in the garden, the SJBGNP abounds with flora AND fauna, birds, butterflies, dragonflies, reptiles, and native mammals.

"For years people visiting this place would tell me that it needed to become a park", said Dr. John Rossi, President and founder of the garden. So finally, about 3 years ago we formed a nonprofit corporation to make that happen. The goals of the SJBNP are to conserve rare species of palms and research them, educate the public about palms and other waterconserving plants, and provide a beautiful green space for families to come and relax in Northeastern Florida.
They also hope to provide a wonderful new venue for weddings and other public events. But they are just getting started. They need help to bring the garden up to its potential as one of Florida's best gardens. They are off to an amazing start, however! For more information, visit stjohnsbotanicalgarden.org Guided tours and programs will be available by contacting SJBNP several weeks in advance. Educators are welcome to plan with us about bringing their classes here on field trips, as well. classes on plant identification, xeriscaping, landscaping, native plants, water conservation, cold protection techniques, fertilizing (or not), planting, transplanting, potting, watching for invasiveness of a plant, and others will be available. We will also have WILD WONDERS presenting animal shows here on a monthly basis, usually on a weekend. (Call ahead for information)

A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family
SPLENIC TUMORS IN DOGS, THE HIDDEN THREAT All pet owners have some level of concern with regards to their pet’s health and longevity as they approach their mid-life years. Our pets just don’t live long enough, and it can be particularly heart breaking when we aren’t aware that they are sick with something that is not easily found with routine exams and blood tests. One of the most life-threatening emergency cases that we see in practice is acute collapse due to a bleeding splenic tumor. I am on a mission to spread the word about this silent killer that can be detected with a simple abdominal ultrasound.
Surgical removal of the spleen is the best treatment for splenic tumors and submitting tissue is the most accurate way of diagnosing the tumor type. Removal of the tumor further prevents the life-threatening bleeding.
Clinical signs that may be seen in a dog with a splenic tumor include:
☑ Lack of appetite & weight loss ☑ Partial loss of muscle control and ataxia Facts: ☑ Confusion, seizures, and dementia Excessive bruising ☑ Splenic tumors in dogs make up approximately 5% to ☑ ☑ Pale gums 7% of all tumors occurring in the canine population. ☑ Acute weakness and inability to walk (lameness) ☑ Splenic tumors can be benign or malignant and ☑ Tachycardia (rapid heart rate) both can result in fatal bleeding that can go easily ☑ Bloated abdomen undetected until the bleeding is severe enough ☑ Collapse to cause clinical signs, which then becomes an emergency.
☑ Standard blood tests are typically unable to detect ☑
that there is a splenic mass unless bleeding has already occurred recently, and anemia is present. The best way to screen for a splenic mass is through an abdominal ultrasound.
Breeds most at risk include:
☑ German Shepherd ☑ Golden Retriever ☑ Labrador Retriever ☑ Boxer ☑ Standard Poodle ☑ Basset Hounds ☑ Bulldogs ☑ Bernese Mountain dog ☑ Flat-Coated Retriever ☑ St. Bernards ☑ Doberman Pinschers ☑ Weimaraners ☑ Scottish Terriers
In dogs, most splenic tumors are either hemangiomas (benign) or hemangiosarcomas (malignant). Hemangiosarcoma represents about 50% of canine spleen cancer. Other common types of cancer found in the spleen are lymphoma and mast cell tumors. Early detection is the best way to give your dog the absolute best chance of survival. Comprehensive bloodwork is still a great first line screen at helping detect early signs of disease, however it can’t detect splenic tumors, unless your dog has already had some bleeding. If your pet is a high risk breed or you just want to screen your pet for this life threatening condition, ask your veterinarian about screening your dog’s spleen. The understanding you obtain from your Veterinarian, helps in the best go forward plan for your pets health and treatment.
