St. Johns Magazine is an upbeat magazine focused on the good things in life, and one of them is living is St. Johns Florida! Our main purpose is to help connect local communities in northwestern St. Johns, Florida. St. Johns Magazine keeps readers intrigued and inspired with articles for and about local people places and events.

a note from the

publisher Dear Readers, When it comes to love, I believe in “carpe diem”. Seize the moments you have with the one you love. Try to forget about the annoying way he chews pretzels or your disagreements about money. Remember those are insignifigant in the grand scheme of it all. Instead, have a date night near the beach, hug eachother at least 5 times a day, laugh, or bring her something special like a beautiful shell. Whatever it is you have to do to allow your mind to feel the power and passion of romantic love. Don’t just wait for Valentine’s Day! Our cover story about a man who proposed to the love of his life with a hot air balloon made me believe that post modern chivalry is alive and well after all. I hope it makes you smile too! Health and Wellness is our focus this month. We want you to get to know the best local doctors, dentists, and therapists with our mini-profiles. Read about alternative medicine, pilates and much more! zine!

Looking & Feeling Your Best Through

Alternative Medicine

I

n today’s world many certified doctors are trying to incorporate cutting edge approaches to disease prevention and care. Northeast Florida has two rising stars in the field that may enlighten you about an alternative reality in medicine.

Dr. Stephen Grable at Complementary Care Center

Dr. Stephen Grable, a board certified internal medicine doctor in Jacksonville Beach, offers a variety of alternative health services in addition to traditional medicine. Dr. Grable moved to the Jacksonville area as a high school senior, primarily so his dad could escape the cold winters of Buffalo. He then went to Medical School and completed his residency in Dayton, Ohio. He began practicing in 1990 at the old St. Luke’s Hospital in Jacksonville. Five years later, after primarily treating symptoms with drugs, he felt there was a better way. Dr. Grable sees himself as a “coach” of sorts, guiding his patients to make informed choices. Continually learning himself, he has received much additional training, including five element acupuncture. He has also kept up with traditional medicine, having been recertified in 2000. His office can provide patients with natural supplements and vitamins, but he will also prescribe antibiotics or other necessary medicines. Also available are chelation and vitamin therapies, massage, trigger point therapy, nutrition counseling, and homeopathic treatments. One thing that stands out about Dr Grable is the way he knows his patients. He isn’t just treating a symptom but searching for the cause, and he says, “As a functional medicine doctor, I believe the body has an innate ability to heal. If we identify and remove the roadblocks, the body can heal.” For example, he can perform acupuncture if needed, but if the cause seems to be stress related he can help patients deal with that, also. At the end of a visit, patients receive a printed recommendation. This may include prescriptions, suggested diet or supplement changes, exercises, and even recommended reading. “It is particularly gratifying to

see patients who have not gotten help before to see improvement. Some of these folks have been to 15 or more physicians,” Dr. Grable says. On a personal note, Dr. Grable enjoys windsurfing, biking, kayaking, fishing, church, medical conferences, and spending as much time with kids as he can. He has two children, Shepherd and Summergrace, who both attend Landrum Middle School in St. Johns County.

Dr. Randolph’s Ageless and Wellness Medical Center

Dr. C.W. Randolph is one of the nation’s leading medical pioneers in the fields of hormone health and anti-aging medicine. His unique approach involves individualized treatments of natural, bioidentical hormone replacement therapies (BHRT). The Center has an in-house lab where they analyze blood work and their Natural Medicine Pharmacy is located adjacent to the center in Jacksonville Beach. A graduate of LSU School of Medicine, Dr. Randolph is board certified by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Board of Holistic Medicine. He is also a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and has training as a licensed compounding pharmacist specializing in pharmacognosy (plant-based medicines). Dr. Randolph and his wife, Genie James, have co-authored three highly-acclaimed books: From Hormone Hell to Hormone Well, From Belly Fat to Belly Flat, and In the Mood Again. Genie has also written Making Managed Care Work, Winning in the Women’s Healthcare Marketplace, and Fountain of Truth. There are three other members on staff who are all board certified. Dr. Will McGalliard is a compounding pharmacist who has a Doctorate of Pharmacy from UF. Dr. Lori Ann Leaseburge brings a strong background in nutritional health. Nicole Thomas, a certified Adult Nurse Practitioner, has expertise in hormone imbalances. Dr. Randolph says, “One of the most exciting success trends in my practice has been the growing number of male patients we see suffering from hormone imbalance. Recently I saw a young man in his mid-30’s who had very low testosterone levels. W e learned that his hormone balance and health were being sabotaged by a combination of environmental toxins, as well as poor diet. We worked together to eliminate those issues while also using testosterone supplementation. This patient experienced improved sexual desire, his energy returned and his thinking became much sharper. And, to date, he has lost 27 pounds. Dr. Randolph grew up in the Panhandle and loves being near the water. He has one daughter, Danika, and enjoys playing with his granddaughter, Lucia, as well as flying and fishing.

F

or the past several decades, the traditional medical community has by and large ignored, misdiagnosed, and mistreated millions of women suffering from symptoms of hormone imbalance such as weight gain, low sex drive, fatigue, hot flashes, foggy thinking and depression. Synthetic hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the most common choice for treatment, has been clinically proven to be dangerous. Still, doctors continue to prescribe HRT and put the health and the lives of their patients at risk. In this edition C.W. Randolph, Jr., M.D., and Genie James team up to talk straight about hormones and the clear advantages of bioidentical over synthetic hormone replacement options for restoring hormone balance naturally. In educating and advocating for a new normal in hormone therapy, the Randolph’s challenge the pharmaceutical industry’s ongoing promotion of HRT and prescribing practices among physicians who remain uneducated about the overall importance of hormone health and the medically-proven treatment of choice, BHRT.

Call Melanie today at (904)349-0109 to schedule your appointment. “I have always worked in an environment where we, as Massage Therapists, were required to give a wide variety of treatments including different types of massage, hot stones therapy, reflexology, hydrotherapy treatments including body wraps, exfoliations - All of those treatments are awesome! However, in the past few years, I have been inspired and motivated by the number of clients and people that I have come in contact with who are in pain due to not getting the relief they so desperately need.” Therefore, I started my own business in July 2013 and my goal is to give relief and get results!” www. amtamembers.com/melaniespell

Rosann W. Faull, Au.D. CCC-A, Board Certified Doctor of Audiology on San

Jose in Julington Creek After completing my Bachelors, Masters Degree and Doctoral degree, I started my career by working with Ear, Nose and Throat physicians and was Director of Audiology at University of Missouri Medical School Hospital. As such I provided diagnostic evaluation of hearing loss, balance evaluation and hearing aid evaluations for children and adults, as well as providing audiology training to medical residents. In 1983 I began my private practice in Melbourne, Florida. In addition to diagnostic hearing testing, hearing aid evaluations and fittings, I also established newborn and infant hearing screening programs at 2 hospitals. In 2009 my husband and I established a private practice in the Mandarin area of Jacksonville. I use my experience and education to concentrate on, for me, the most rewarding part of audiology; helping people get the most from their hearing with advanced hearing technologies. I provide to adults diagnostic hearing evaluations, hearing aid evaluations, prescribing and fitting hearing aids, and tinnitus evaluations and tinnitus relief. I work with many manufactures to assure the best solution for my patient’s hearing health. Since starting my private practice over 31 years ago, I have seen, prescribed and fit over 10,000 patients. Experience Counts! My practice is accepting new patients and receives referrals from my patients, several physicians and I am on staff at assistive living facilities. www.drfaull.com/ 904-262-5550

Control-OLOGY

Pi•la•tes pi•lätēz/ noun 1.

Photo: Dottie Smithowner Stop for Pilates with Instructors Johna Beaman & Jennifer Dourneaux-

Pilates is Smart Exercise for EVERYONE

a system of exercises using special apparatus, designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, and posture, and enhance mental awareness. The ladies at Stop for Pilates were having far too much fun considering how much muscle, strength and twisting goes into controlling their bodies as Pilates instructors. Watching them manuever complex moves such as the Magician and the Hundred Breaths, I was impressed by their knowledge and enthusiasm. Dottie Smith, owner of Stop for Pilates on Market Street in Palencia, says anyone can benefit from Pilates, from the athlete to the stay-at-home Mom who wants to get back in shape. Stop for Pilates offers a variety of classes from gentle to intense that are tailored to each individual’s level and needs. Pilates exercises focus on posture awareness, developing the core abdominal muscles, and strengthening the spine. Equipment, designed by Pilates founder Joseph Pilates is combined with mat work to create a hybrid workout that utilizes a system of pulleys and the resistance of your body weight. There are six guiding principles of Pilates: centering, control, flow, breath, precision and concentration. Abdominals and lower back muscles, for example, are

worked through a move called, One Hundred Breaths. But the move also requires concentration to hold the position, and the cardio (breath) one needs to achieve a balanced workout. Dottie’s Students tend to rave about how Pilates has helped them. Jim Page, co-owner of The Arthur Murray Dance Studio on Epic Theater Drive in St. Augustine, and student at Stop for Pilates, says, “My dancing instructor asked where I have been dancing, because my dancing posture is suddenly so much better than it used to be! I hadn’t seen her for instruction for 2 or 3 months, but I have been doing Pilates regularly. It’s true! I dance so much better!” Another student, Lisa Hurst, a tennis player, says, “This is the best thing I’ve done for my game. To be able to balance, get there, get stopped, rotate and go – you have to be there. You need to come!” It is excellent for people who over-exercise and may have damaged muscles as a result. Dottie says she helps rehabilitate many people who have pulled muscles while weight lifting, for instance. Pilates teaches how to hold yourself in alignment, and control your muscles to avoid injury. If you crave the chiseled physique of a dancer, Stop for Pilates will also introduce a Ballet Bar Class taught by Ballet Dancer and Pilates Instructor, Jennifer Dourneaux. The class is an intermediate level class in terms of difficulty and it is helpful to know some dance terms. The Ballet class begins February 6 and runs for 6 weeks.

Hundred Breaths

A basic Pilates exercise which got its name because the count is based on one-hundred breaths or one-hunded beats. Step One: While sitting line up feet parallel on the mat. Step Two: Scoop lower abdominals toward spine and roll back on sacram. Just before toes lift, stop in that position and hold. Step Three: Shoulder blades down and arms down and tight like a stick. Step Four: Inhale (sniff through nose rapidly 5 times) Exhale, (blow air out rapidly 5 times) While holding position do breath set 10 times. BENEFITS • Relaxing to the nervous system • Strengthens lung capacity • Strengthens postural muscles

"Only the guy who isn't rowing has time to rock the boat." ~Jean-Paul Sartre Everyone at the Davidson Companies was rowing together for 2013. We exceeded our goals and welcome the challenge of 2014. Let’s look at the Northeast Florida Association of Realtors market stats for this past December and 2013. The pending sales were up 26% over December 2012. There were 22,916 contracts written in 2013 which is a 22% increase over the 18,737 written in 2012. We averaged 1,910 contracts per month compared to 1,561 per month in 2012. Closings were up 8% in December 2013 over December 2012; however, we were up 22% for the year. There were 21,883 closings in 2013 compared to 17,974 in 2012. The average days on the market dropped 21% from 105 days in December 2012 to 83 days in December 2013. A well priced home in good condition in a good location does not stay on the market more than a few days. The median sales price of $154,900 is up 9% from December of 2012 and 15% when comparing all of 2013 to 2012. The average sales price of $196,662 is up 1% from December of 2012 and 8% comparing the year 16

2013 to 2012. The inventory of homes for sale is down 8% from December of last year to 8,767 properties available. The lender-mediated homes for sale are down 26% and traditional homes increased by 3%. We have 4.6 months of inventory available in our market which is down 25% from last December. A balanced market is approximately 6 months supply. Davidson Realty’s closings for 2013 were over $96 Million compared to just under $57Million in 2012 for a 70% increase. Our sales of over $120 Million this year compared to $70 Million in 2012 was an increase of 71%. If the market increased 22% year over year for sales and closings and we increased 71% and 70%, I would say no one around here had time to be rocking the boat. We are looking forward to another outstanding year at Davidson Realty. Please let me know if we can assist you with any of your real estate needs. We want to be your trusted real estate advisor.

When Landed in Durbin Crossing One Day...

W

Photos & Story by Erica J Bean

hen I think of a hot air balloon I think of childhood days of my Gram taking me to Rotary Festival’s in NH and my daughters childhood obsession with The Wizard of Oz! You know the scene I mean, Dorothy elated to be going home with the Great and Powerful Wizard. Toto runs off, Tin-Man mistakenly lets the rope go, off the Wizard goes, Dorothy pleading “ Don’t go without me!”. Well, not the mishaps and sadness of the scene more the era of the film. VINTAGE - I am all about Vintage these days! (Maybe that also has to do with my impending 40th birthday)IMG_1937 One beautiful May morning, I saw this beautiful hot air balloon behind my house and snapped a picture with my cell phone. Very quickly, it went out of view behind the trees. There wasn’t any place for the balloon to go down as right behind me is a preserve and beyond that a cul-de-sac in our neighborhood. So I grabbed my keys to drive over and check it out. (I also grabbed my camera in hopes everyone was just fine and I might get an opportunity to take a few pics). There it was, perfectly landed in an empty lot in the cul-desac. It was a beautiful site..bright colors floating in the air, the basket perfectly placed with bursts of fire flowing up. I was memorized and actually had “shutter block”! I stood for a few seconds and watched without even being able to take a picture. The Great and Powerful Wizard (Who I now know as Dave, from A Hot Air Balloon Ride) asked a few by standers watching if they would lean on to the basket to pull the balloon down gently. I immediately ran over and offered to help. I leaned on the basket with camera in hand and wouldn’t you know it my shutter block was gone! I was snapping pic’s up into the balloon, not sure if I was in focus or not! Accompanying Dave was a young man (Michael) helping with the ropes and a young woman ( Taylor) who had just freed herself from the basket. As the balloon came down I continued to snap pictures. It’s not every day a hot air balloon goes down in your neighborhood! But it is when I caught this image, that I realized this was a very special hot air balloon ride! That’s right, kudos need to go out to Michael for such a great way to propose! I continued to take a few pictures for the newly engaged couple, all with a vintage flare! Congratulations Michael and

Taylor! Thank you for allowing me to capture (so unexpectedly) your special day!

STORY UPDATE:

Recently, I reached out to Michael, an employee at Smith Bros. Pest Control (his family’s business) and Taylor, a student at St Johns River State College, to congratulate them on their recent nuptials. They had a beach wedding on September 7, 2013 set up by Sun and Sea Beach Weddings. Performing the ceremony was Michael’s childhood church pastor, who has since retired. Imagine with me for a minute......Sunset, flower arches, tiki torches, hanging flower balls and rose petals creating a brilliant contrast to the pale sand. A gorgeous barefoot Taylor, carrying a stargazer lily bouquet, walking on a sand heart isle to the love of her life while a violinist, guitarist and cello player perform “Canon”. As she joins the pastor and Michael, adorned in a stunning vest rather than a traditional suit, in a huge heart shape made from the sand. They profess their love for one another for all their friends and family to witness. The pastor announces, “you may kiss the bride”. As they lean in to embrace in their first kiss as husband and wife the musicians play “What You Want” by John Butler. No holding back on setting the scene for love and romance. They didn’t stop there! They also had what is called a stone ceremony. Each guest receives a stone as they arrive at the wedding ceremony and asked to hold the stones during the wedding ceremony and transfer their love, good wishes and heartfelt blessings for the couple to the stone. Usually at the end of the wedding ceremony the couple is joined by all of their guests at the water’s edge, each making a wish and tossing the stones in the ocean. Beautiful. I am absolutely speechless, no words for the love, romance and unity of their relationship. Oh, and I almost forgot to add, they had a 2 week honeymoon in Alaska! Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. Michael Smith!

Craft

Be My

Valentine with Words of Love Photos & Craft

W

by Erica J. Bean

ill you still be keeping your New Year’s Resolution of no more junk food come Valentine’s Day? Or looking for a Valentine’s Day card/craft for the kids that doesn’t include candy? Here is a fast, cute and inexpensive craft for you:

Valentine’s Day Picture Card Holder Supplies:

• Scrap wood (any small size will work I don’t recommend smaller than 1.5 in x 1.5 in) • Clothes pins (the type w/ the spring coil) • Hot glue gun • Paint & brushes • Optional decorating supplies such as ribbon, glitter, stickers, craft paper gems etc.

3. Now that the paint is dry you can embellish with any and all of your optional supplies. 4. Print any of your favorite photos and insert them into the gripper end of the clothes pin by gently pinching the bottom. Note: If there was heavy paint in the gripper end of the clothes pin, be gentle but persistent. It will open, however if you use too much force your will break the spring coil. There you have it….. fast, cute and inexpensive. For more information on how to make the WORDS OF LOVE book visit our blog at www. printmypictureonline.com/wordsof-love

Instructions: 1. Hot glue the side of the close pin that you grab to pinch in the center of 1 side of the wooden block. Make sure that the wide end of the clothes pin is even w/ the flat edge of the block as seen in picture 1. If you miss this step your base will not be even, thus not staying up when you display your finished product. 2. Once the glue is dry paint both the block and the clothes pin with whatever colors you want. Set aside to dry.

A Message from The Vet ~ Dr. Veling, DVM Palencia Pet Clinic

REVENGE OF THE BABIES by Peter Veling, DVM

O

Mckinley & AssociAtes

kay, you’re probably thinking “What has Dr. Pete got with a title like that?” If you have ever owned a Labrador and had kids around at the same time, you will understand after reading this. Labs will sit under a high chair and steal any food held within reach by babies. Here goes. In early December, a five year old Labrador Retriever, Lulu, came in on a • Annuities Monday for vomiting and lack of appetite. We checked• aCollege Funding & fecal sample to find a parasite that we treated. The owner was asked to call if she Placement Charitable Services was not better. Rarely do we find a confirmed case of• parasites that does not respond. I was confident Lulu would get better. I should know better than to think that the obvious would be the cause in a Labrador who was not eating. It was The Holidays. Lulu was back in on Friday for continued vomiting and, by this time, had not eaten in 12 days. We took two x-rays. One look and it was obvious that something abnormal was in the stomach. Her stomach looked like it had a stack of plates in it. I showed the x-ray to the owner and gave him the bad news that she needed surgery. He said yes. We started IV fluids and did surgery that afternoon. I made a big incision. I reached in and immediately found a lump in the small intestine. To make the story of a two hour surgery short I ended up removing a total of 21 pacifiers from the small intestine and the stomach. We were amazed. Closure was routine. Lulu recovered well from anesthesia. We kept her on fluids overnight. I called her owner with the news. The next morning, Lulu greeted me with a tail was uncontrollable. We examined her, took out the catheter, gave her some water and an hour later started her food. She was a new dog. When her owner came in, he said, “You probably are wondering how a dog gets hold of 21 pacifiers.” The question had occurred to us. He said, “We don’t have kids that age.” They had adopted the dog four years before from a shelter. The entire four years she has not been right, always an upset stomach, special diets, etc. That fit. The pacifiers, for the most part, were black. I looked them up on-line. They are available in pink and blue. The nipple portion had been chewed off of some. No parent will put a black pacifier into a baby’s mouth. Lulu had these pacifiers in her stomach for over four years with the stomach’s acid turning them black. To end our story, Lulu is happy and healthy and no longer vomits. I will be entering pictures and the x-rays in a yearly contest for the most unusual object(s) removed from a dog’s abdomen. I will always remember Lulu and her 21 pacifiers.

Financial Fitness

By Nicholas Brockwell

When you think of fitness, what comes to mind? Workout this way, eat this, not that. Everyday there is a new “secret” or “routine” that is marked as the only thing you will ever need to become fit and healthy. I would describe myself as somewhat of a fitness fanatic and let me tell you, it is no secret how to be healthy. It takes hard work, dedication, and proper planning. There is no one size fits all solution. You must analyze yourself and make goals based on what you want to achieve and where you want to go. Financial fitness is no different! What is best for you may not be best for the next person. Just like with physical fitness the first step is self evaluation. This is absolutely the most difficult part of the process. This self evaluation means you must be completely honest with yourself! When you evaluate your current situation you must realize that financial stability is more than just dollars and cents in your bank account. How are you protecting those dollars? How are you protecting your family? Are you prepared for an emergency? These are a few important areas to focus on as you begin your financial fitness routine. Once you have evaluated your current situation, it is time to make a plan. Whether physical or financial fitness, planning is

essential. Set goals and develop the process to achieve these goals. Remember, set realistic goals! Fitness is a long-term venture. If you go to the gym one day you will not see results. The same goes for financial fitness. You should be active with your planning. Do not be afraid to seek advice. Think of your advisor as your personal trainer. They can give you the tools for success, but it is up to you to use those tools. Start now and enjoy the rewards of being fit both physically and financially. Disclosure, McKinley and Associates has a Certified Estate Planner (CEP) on staff to consider strategies available. However McKinley and Associates is not a legal or tax certified firm and cannot give legal, tax advice or practice law.
