St. Johns

May 2014

Dear Reader, If you live in St. Johns County, sooner or later golf is going to touch your life in one way or another. Northern St. Johns is home of some of the finest courses in Florida, the world reknowned Player’s Championship is played here, not to mention the World Golf Hall of Fame. This issue of St. Johns magazine celePhoto by Graham Martin Ancient City Photography brates the game of golf, our local courses and the people who love them. As a novice to the world of golf, I learned a lot about this sophisticated game as I toured a few local courses and learned about par and handicaps, and how to drive a golf cart! My favorite part was meeting the golfers and enjoying the natural beauty on the courses. I must get myself a golf cart some day - they are so fun! Even though May is all about golf, let’s not forget its time to appreciate MOMS - those amazing ladies: the givers, the backbone of your family, the light in your lives! They just deserve so much happiness! Motherhood is deeply connected to birth but did you know that midwives heal women throughout their life cycle? Learn more in our interesting article about midwifery, and also enjoy a fun essay about being a Mom. publisher Debbie Gaylord

GOLF ANYONE?

Jewels of St. Johns With their green perfection, stunning natural settings and world class amenities, the courses of St. Johns are among the finest in the world and perhaps one of our communities greatest assets. TPC Sawgrass

TPC Sawgrass

Home of THE PLAYERS 110 Championship Way, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082 (904) 273-3235 www.tpc.com/tpc-sawgrass Home of the PGA TOUR’s headquarters and THE PLAYERS Championship, TPC Sawgrass was built to challenge the world’s best professionals, while at the same time providing the avid golfer and fan with the ultimate golf experience. Located in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., between Jacksonville and historic St. Augustine along the Atlantic coast, TPC Sawgrass is about a half-hour away from the Jacksonville International Airport. THE PLAYERS Stadium Course Designed by Pete Dye and intended to give TOUR players a course to call their home, THE PLAYERS Stadium Course is home to three of the most challenging finishing holes and one of the most photographed holes in the world – Hole 17 and its iconic island green. THE PLAYERS Stadium allows golfers to access a level of play typically reserved for PGA TOUR players. Personal forecaddies educate players on the history and heritage of TPC Sawgrass and provide traditional services to enhance the TPC Sawgrass experience. Dye’s Valley Course Designed by Pete Dye, along with Bobby Weed, Dye’s Valley Course boasts similar design qualities to THE PLAYERS Stadium, including spectator mounding, water on all holes and native oaks, pines and palms, making Dye’s Valley one of the most challenging and enjoyable courses to play. Shorter in length, but just as compelling, Dye’s Valley is the host of the Web.com TOUR Championship. Golfers enjoy use of TPC Sawgrass’ world-class forecaddies from October through May on Dye’s Valley.

Slammer & Squire

2 World Golf Pl, St Augustine, FL 32092 (904) 940-6088 www.worldgolfvillage.com/slammersquire.aspx Tee off from under the tower of the World Golf Hall of Fame at the Slammer & Squire. This 6,939-yard course was designed by architect Bobby Weed along with Hall of Fame Members, Sam Slammer & Squire Snead (the “Slammer”) and Gene Sarazen (the “Squire”). All three men shared a desire to build a course that rewards good shot making while preserving the area’s natural beauty. What developed is a well groomed course that showcases the pristine unspoiled wooded areas, wetlands and natural beauty of the region. The layout is wide open with several contoured greens. A few water hazards come into play, but the picturesque views of the Hall of Fame will definitely overshadow any challenges you may face.

The King & Bear is the only golf course in the world that has been co-designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. This course offers a mixture of two different design styles that come together to form one masterpiece. The front nine is an open, linksstyle layout that gives a nod to the heritage of the historic city of St. Augustine, Florida. The back nine is more traditional Florida golf fringed with loblolly pines, 200-year-old oak trees, indigenous coquina rock, and numerous water features. With 7,279 yards, it’s a “driver’s” course, which should come as no surprise, as both Palmer and Nicklaus wielded awesome power games in their primes.

St. Johns Golf & Country Club is an extraordinary place located between St. Augustine and Jacksonville, Florida. The 18hole Clyde Johnston-designed course is the community’s centerpiece with just the right amount of challenge for novice and avid golfers alike. A great place to hone your skills, St. Johns is known for its consistent quality of service and conditions, being nationally ranked for customer satisfaction and loyalty by the National Golf Foundation, and host to the PGA TOUR Qualifying School in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2014. Delicately carved out of a pine forest, the course at St. Johns offers five sets of tees plus a family tee that varies the length of the course from 7,250 yards down to 2,400 yards. Depending on wind conditions, the 18 hole course can be gentle or a real bear, so take your time to enjoy the game while natural wildlife surrounds you during your round.

South Hampton provides six tee boxes giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy their round of golf. Yardage ranges from 6,935 yards for low handicappers, down to 2,862 yards from the family tees. The Golf Club at South Hampton also offers you great facilities before and after your round with its world class practice facility to sharpen your game, and the 19th hole where you can kick back and relax after your round of golf. The Plantations at Ponte Vedra 101 Plantation Dr, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082 (904) 543-2999 www.theplantationpvb.com/golf_club Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay designed and built this majestic par 72, signature championship golf course. The course presents a mix of demanding par fives and three signature par threes along with a variety of doglegs left and right and an island green at the 15th Hole. Five sets of tee placements that range from 5,058 to 6,940 yards provide golfers of every level the opportunity to challenge themselves and enjoy their round at the same time. There are 58 bunkers and on 16 out of the 18 holes water comes into play. Practice makes perfect. With two putting greens, three chipping areas, a full driving range, and a teaching complex you have every opportunity to fine tune your game. The Palencia Club a low scoring round. The PGA and LPGA professionals who are often in the neighborhood, frequently remark that playing a round of golf at The Plantation is akin to playing on some of the best courses they play on their respective tours.

The Champion’s Club at Julington Creek 1111 Durbin Creek Blvd, Fruit Cove, FL 32259 (904) 287-4653 Located in the relaxed and well-developed Southeast section of Jacksonville, FL, the 18-hole course was built to make the title of Champion meaningful. The well-manicured condition of the course extends the luxuriant feel you get the moment you drive onto the club grounds. The Club House is reminiscent of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, and remains in stately condition outside as well as inside. Inside are all the amenities you expect from a golf club from the golden era of Jacksonville.

of the Game

The temperature was a near perfect 76 and the sky a brilliant blue one fine day as I ventured out with Alan Loeser (pictured above) on the course at Slammer & Squire to ask people why they love this game. Jackie Bosley, Donna Yadon, Linda Flahardy

The ladies enjoy the game a few times each week and frequently particiapte in local tournaments. “We like the weather and the comraderie. Plus its just fun.”

Tim MacNamara (left) “I like the opportunitiy to go out, enjoy the weather in good company, and have a few cold beverages.” CL McKenzie, Atlanta (right) “I like the challenge. It is always exhilarating if you play well.”

Frank & Jane Tyska, Ponte Vedra “Each game is different and sometimes you make the perfect shot, and it makes you want to come back again and again.”

Cherrie Richter

She was on the course alone honing her skills. “I enjoy competing against myself. Being outside is a fun way to spend the day.”

“The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.” Phil Jackson This quote is true in sports and in business. Our team has shown so much strength lately. It is unusual in our industry to find a team that supports each other to make sure the customer is taken care of no matter what. In reviewing the Northeast Florida Association of Realtors market stats this month, I want to focus on pending sales, closings and inventory. There were 2,333 contracts written in March which is 15% more than last March. The last time we had that many pending sales was for a period of 3 months in 2005 which was at the very peak of the market. The first quarter pending sales are up 11% over the first quarter last year. Closed sales for March were 1,781 which is 2% less than last March, I decided to look a little deeper to see why pending sales were up and closings were down. Lender-mediated closings were down 5% from last March, so less distressed closings accounted for some of the reduction in closings. I looked at what was happening at Davidson Realty and realized 42% of our pending sales are new construction which always take several months to build and close. I also noticed that many of our contracts have a closing date 60 days or more from the contract date. For the first quarter in the NEFAR stats, closings are up 4% over the first quarter last year. I don’t believe closings will track with pending sales like we have seen in the past due to the amount of new home sales.

The inventory of homes available for sale continues to decline. There are 9,441 homes in active status in the Multiple Listing System in March which is 3% less than last March despite a 12% increase in new listings for March. There are 27% fewer lender-mediated homes in inventory than last March and 11% more traditional listings. This is a very good sign since distressed listings have a median sales price of $90,000 and traditional properties have a median sales price of $202,000. There is only a 4.9 months supply of inventory available and 5 to 6 months supply is a balanced market. Pending sales are up and closings will follow. Inventory continues to stay low. We are still selling a lot of new construction. I believe the housing market will have a strong 2014. Baseball is back and the Atlanta Braves are in first place for now. Life is good. If we can assist you with any of your real estate needs, please let me know. Remember that we can help you any where in northeast Florida. Our team of over 50 agents come from all over the first coast.

Nease High School’s New Women’s Golf Coach!

Karisa Akin is a poised young woman with a clear plan

for her future. The graduate of Middle Tennessee State University was recently named as Nease High School’s new Girls Golf Coach and is looking forward to the upcoming Fall season.

The former Kentucky’s Women’s Open Champ has gar-

After college graduation Karisa wanted to relocate

some place where she could play golf year round and north Florida was the perfect choice. She found a position as Assistant Golf Pro at The Palencia Club in St. Augustine, right around the corner from Nease, which also happens to be Nease’s prac-

She is also furthering her education by participating in

Happy Motherhood by Dawn McDonnell

Boys seem to have that extra special gene. The one that has no fear. The warrior, fighter whatever instigator they maybe. Life is never boring with a few boys near. Moms know this all too well and sistesrs know this too. A boy’s world is full of things that we girls just really never do! One day my son, as cute as he was, a pint size Dennis the menace. That little spike of hair that never went down, a perpetual up do and impish grin. If you were a mom you just know when your child is up to no good. Something was going on in that little head of his to make life just a little bit more interesting. You know what grin I am talking about. You just have that second intuition. Sommmmmebody is up to noooo good you just can’t put your finger on it. My little lumkin already started walking at 10 months! so life was over as I knew it! Not only then but I was pregnant with my second child knowing I would have 2 little darlings 18 monts apart. Child care and work seemed like a huge mountain to climb. Expecting the unexpected was beginning to be an all too familiar title for our family future. My husband and I already had a few warnings early on. We lost him once at a simple outdoor party. He was only 11 months. Just a baby! An advanced toddler. You know that mo

ment of distress I am talking about . Expecting the unexpected. Pure panic set in. Your heart sinks and crazy thoughts start taking over. Yes, we were at an out door neighborhood party. Plenty of kids were playing around and our little lumkin got bored in the garage. [The author at Mom’s Park: It was overlooking the st johns river in a mothers park. Little did I know it is called Moms Park. dedicated to Patricia Austin the former Mayor Ed Austin of Jacksonville’s wife. She died in a car crash in 1996. One minute he’s there, next minute he’s gone! We looked everywhere! Every preposition within the 54 in the english language; behind, beyond, among, beneath between into within aside down below above any possible place within a 3 mile radius. Where in God’s place coud he be. Distraught and panicky, sick to my stomach. I had sweat in places I did not know could sweat. It was a movie screen in my brain going fast forward. I couldn’t think. After 20 minutes of frantically looking I simply stopped. Focused and calm to just really think what would he do? Get into his head. Pretend you are an eleven month old curious, bored, a baby going into advanced toddlerhood. Not an easy task for a first time parent. I’m was still getting used to diapers and baby talk vs heels and a life before this all started. Ahhhhhh what would a little pint size ball want to get into? Yes! Yes! we started to look in some private hideaways . We found him! Within a short distance tucked away inside a huge stormwater sewer. It looked like a great hiding place. A personal private river. Sitting there with a huge grin looking up at us with his big blue eyes covered in various shades of mud, completely wet, knee deep in his construction boots with the most innocent look on his face like whats all the fuss about? It is then I found myself repeating that all to familiar saying! Auuuuustin I’m gonna kill you if you run away like that again. Of course when these things happen, we moms pick up our child squeeze them so hard grateful, thankful they are ok, thinking all the while if we squeeze them hard enough they will stick to us like crazy glue. Filing that memory in a memory bank for lessons learned in motherhood hoping that it never happens again.

The Good Midwife

Certified nurse midwife Barbara Dembek discusses educational material with patient Candace Helms.

By Lisa Farese

22

Think you know all there is to know about midwifery - think again. The profession of midwifery is one that dates back centuries, but many mistakenly assume is it still synonymous with a primitive form of childbirth. This is but one misconception of many the midwives at OB-GYN Associates of St. Augustine brought to light in a sit-down with certified nurse midwives Elizabeth Meadows, Barbara Dembek and Christa Zielinski. “The public’s perception is that we deliver in homes with no medication, but we deliver in a hospital with medications and can manage all of that,” said Christa. In fact a key component that differentiates this group is that they are certified nurse midwives and not just certified midwives. They are accredited by the American Midwifery Certification Board, are advanced registered nurse practitio-

“We focus on the full scope of women’s health,” said Elizabeth. Barbara added, “This week I had a 14- year-old patient and an 85-year-old patient.” So from prenatal checks and delivery, to annual exams and gynecological problems, the midwives serve many patients, and their services are covered by most insurance plans to boot. With a focus on education, prevention and empowering women to be responsible for and take part in their care, this team realizes such discussions take time. As a result, they work to minimize the number of patients they see a day in an effort to give their patients this needed one-on-one attention. “We make a point of keeping our schedule under

ners and have master’s degrees in nursing. Additionally, they work in conjunction with physicians, should intervention be needed, and even share educational opportunities weekly with the physicians. They call this unique approach a “collaborative practice”. And while they work closely with physicians, their practice is distinctly different. A big component of their work has to do with education. From educating new moms-to-be on proper nutrition and exercise, to adolescents on maintaining their health, to post-menopausal women on how to maximize their health, this group makes education a priority to the many age groups they serve—and, yes, they care for women both before and beyond their childbearing years.

control, so we have the time to talk to patients,” said Elizabeth. It’s not all talk either. Their work clearly translates to action. Known to boast lower C-section and use of instrument rates, last year this team had a mere 10 percent of births end in C-sections. Compare that to the national average of around 30 percent according to the National Vital Statistics Reports, and there’s no denying there is much to be said for the “watchful waiting” approach this team takes when it comes to childbirth. So while the profession of midwifery has undeniable historical roots, it continues to evolve to meet the everchanging needs of women today in some of the most defining moments of their lives.

The Semi-Annual Exam, Not So Boring After All A Message from The Vet ~ Dr. Veling, DVM Palencia Pet Clinic

One of the differences in the way current veterinary medicine is practiced from earlier in my career has been a recommendation for pets over the age of seven to be examined twice yearly. A good example of a well cared for pet that we see twice a year is Suzy, a 12 year old spayed female Cocker Spaniel. There is an old saying in veterinary medicine that “Five Cocker Spaniels and an English Bulldog and you’ve got yourself a practice.” In Suzy’s case it is somewhat true. Her owner is truly devoted to her. Suzy has limited vision due to cataracts. Her disposition is wonderful. She appreciates our treats. She has a long standing but controlled anemia. She came in last month for an exam and a routine Bordetella vaccination (sometimes known as a “bordello vaccine” but that is a different occupation). This is the vaccine that is sometimes given by squirting a liquid into the nose of the dog. It is used for dogs that get groomed and go into boarding kennels most commonly. The vaccine was given safely. Then, during the exam, I found a growth on her paw that was covered with fresh blood. She must have traumatized it getting into the car. Cockers are genetically prone to these sebaceous adenomas. They are sometimes nicked during grooming. For the most part, they are non-threatening for the dog to have but this one was large and broken, leading to the blood. Because of Suzy’s chronic anemia we do not want to anesthetize her to

remove the growth. It would be too risky. Instead, we used cryosurgery to remove it. Three 15 second freezes most of the time will lead to regression of a sebaceous adenoma over the next two weeks. Once in a while there is a second round of freezes needed if the first treatment does not get it all. The best thing about this method is that it is totally safe. Freezing it also stopped the bleeding. Suzy was a real trooper for the freezing. No local anesthesia needed for her. The point of the matter is that Suzy came in for a routine exam, just to see how she was doing. In trying to be thorough, another problem was found and dealt with before a bigger mess occurred. Good health care for pets centers on the examination. It is an investment that we hope finds nothing but does find important problems once in a while. For young pets, once a year is fine. For older pets, twice a year is best. Keep the bumps at bay and know that your pet has its health intact.

Join Together for

A River Blessing

For millennia, the slow moving currents of the Julington Creek have fed the broader waters of the St. Johns River. These waters have been the dwelling place of the Timucua, and served as the subject for William Bartram’s journals, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ books and Harriet Beecher Stowe’s letters. For the past 50 years, the creek has been a source of peace and tranquility for residents who’ve called Westminster Woods on Julington Creek home. In honor and celebration of the active living retirement community’s 50th anniversary and the inspiration these waters have instilled upon those who’ve lived here, both the St. Johns and the Matanzas River Keepers will participate in a Blessing of the River on May 24 at 10 a.m. at Westminster Woods on Julington Creek. The public is invited to attend the special ceremony. Ayolane Halusky will lead the blessing under the direction of Basil Braveheart, an elder of the Lakota Sioux Indian tribe. Braveheart led a river blessing in 2008 at the Marywood Retreat Center.
