Connecting the Growing Communities of Northern St. Johns

St. Johns magazine www.stjohnsmag.com

Dear Reader I like to think I am a story teller, an explorer and an idea person. In another life I was a Reporter, a Press Secretary and Communications Director but I realized I wanted to spend more time focused on the things that really mattered to me - my family and my community. With St. Johns Magazine, I love having the opportunity to connect our neighborhoods and tell the stories about the people and businesses in our local community. I love living in northern St. Johns with its outstanding people, A+ schools, beautiful beaches and art-centered perspective. As the mother of four energetic children, I am interested in what is happening locally so I can help my family and others sift through all that is available to enrich their lives. Since publishing St. Johns Magazine in November 2012, I have been dedicated to using it as a source of positive information with uplifting content. The concept is simple - a hyper-local resource focused on the newer communities of northern St. Johns.

I invite community members to send articles, photographs and calendar listings for publication in print and online to debbie@stjohnsmag.com. Please include a caption with photos. Or, if you would like something promoted immediately, please post it to our Facebook page (St. Johns Magazine) Please enjoy this issue of St. Johnns Magazine featuring Indulge Salon’s story of success, a Bridal Showcase and Back to School articles to enrich your life.. I am especially excited to share the first in a series of articles about Autism. My son Jake has autism and I believe this article and the information we plan to post on our website will help many families affected by this mysterious and heartbraking disorder. Sincerely, Debbie Gaylord

Destination Tulum, Mexico by Debbie Gaylord

Did you know sea turtles, or tortugas in Mexico, lay hundreds of eggs in a nest on the beach and then swim away and leave the baby turtles to fend for themselves? Lucky for the hatchlings, they have a built-in magnetic sense that helps them find their way. When they are only babies, they swim like maniacs to get as far away from shore as possible until they catch the Gulf Stream and it pulls them out into the center of the ocean to that magical place called the Sargasso Sea. The sea has this special healing seaweed the turtles like to eat. When they are ready to nest as adults they use their inner compass to return to the exact place they were born. They don’t need a map or a GPS or anything like humans use to help them find their way home. While visiting Tulum, Mexico on the Riviera Maya this summer I witnessed more than ten sea turtles nesting on the tranquil beaches at night. The largest number came up during the full moon. It was pure magic to see the giant creatures lift their bodies from the ocean and climb up the beach. I felt like I was part of something ancient and wonderful, a witness to nature’s blessings. Since they are an endangered species, teams of marine biology students scour the beaches waiting for the nesting turtles, protecting them from passersby, tagging them and measuring them for research. The best part of our turtle adventure was that it was unexpected. It was a simple yet powerful gift bestowed by place and time. We had taken the two-hour flight from Orlando to Cancun and driven about an hour and a half south to our beach house in Tulum seeking the turquoise blue waters off the reef, peace and relaxation under thatched roof palapas. We chose an eco-friendly house without air conditioning that was run with a solar powered generator, planning to visit the Mayan Ruins, eat delicious Mexican cuisine, take in the local culture and explore some of the eco-centered activities for which the area is well known. The fact that tortugas gathered there in July and August was our little bonus. The Mayan Ruins were stunning, located on the bluffs high above the sea, and only a short five minute drive from the house. For history buffs, more elaborate ruins are within a few hours if you are feeling more adventurous. Another highlight of Tulum was the food. Sand floors and beach views abound and ceviche, a raw fish dish that is cured in limejuice & mixed with chili peppers to bring out the flavors was our favorite addiction. We ordered it at almost every restaurant where we ate and each place had its own spin. Also, the delicious fresh seafood was a draw; the butterfish, the red snapper, Caribbean lobster, and whole fresh fish complete with heads and eyeballs. But let us not forget the Mezcal! In Tulum there are entire bars devoted to the distilling and serving of Mezcal, made from the agave plant. The bartender owner at our favorite place, Mamma Mui had an entire menu of drinks he concocted with his homemade Mezcal combined with freshly squeezed juices (direct from the fruit not sitting in a refrigerator somewhere). I highly recommend “The Mamma Mui” – a deliciously fresh Mezcal cocktail mixed with cucumber juice and lime, the rim of the glass laced with salt and chili powder. Tulum, Mexico will change you – The Mayans called it City of Dawn. It lends a sense of renewal and rebirth that I encountered with new experiences and peace that permeated my soul. Like the turtles that flock there in the summer Tulum has a slower pace that allowed this Americana to take in nature and slow down for a much needed change.

Why Life is Good

at Indulge

It has been a year since St. Johns Magazine featured Nina and Chris Stelfox, the new owners of Indulge Salon Shoppe & Spa, a beautiful 3200 square foot hair salon and day spa located on CR 210. We followed up with Chris & Nina to learn about their journey in the first year as small business owners.

Positive Energy & Teamwork Help Indulge Salon Owners Nina & Chris Stelfox Stay Motivated to Succeed!

Chris & Nina Stelfox left their corporate jobs last summer with a vision to transform Indulge into a place that the St. Johns & St. Augustine communities would think of first when looking to rejuvenate, re-energize, and to look and feel beautiful. Last month, Indulge was voted by our readers “the best hair salon in St. Johns” and Chris & Nina could not be happier. “These last twelve months have been full of blessings because Chris and I have a great team behind us. We have experienced growth, and all signs are positive for us. This could have never been possible without our current team: Carolina, Ed, Diane, Laura, Denise, Irina, Teresa, Charlotte, Tamilee, Steve, Grace and Megan. As well as our former team members: Kim, Sarah, Hillary, Norma & Sheila who have gone in different directions but whom we miss and thank for their contributions.” Nina said. When we asked Nina what has this last twelve months been like, she answered: “We definitely have a lot to celebrate. It has been great to see new faces walking into Indulge and seeing them become loyal customers. It has been very gratifying to see how our team consistently indulges our guests in wonderful services that make them look and feel beautiful. We want people to choose us because at Indulge they find a beautiful, comfortable and relaxing environment, a kind spirited team of skilled talented professionals and all at reasonable prices. At the new Indulge, it is about the guest experience. “We go out of our way to make sure that individually and collectively we deliver quality services and an experience you will want to come back to and recommend to a friend. Our team understands who we are, and shares similar values that embrace positive thinking and good energy. This reflects beautifully in the experience we are here to create for our guests. It seems organic to us. This is a good thing.” said Nina. Chris & Nina have grown closer together. They are good at grounding each other and at helping each other cope with the anxieties and fears that all new small business owners go through. The right signs are there. We continue to greet new faces and grow our team. We are excited about what the next twelve months hold for Indulge. The Indulge team wants to take this opportunity to thank every single guest who has honored us with their visit in this last 12 months. We look forward to continuing to provide you all with a place to Indulge

Real Estate Market News by Sherry P. Davidson

If you are like me, you are drawn to read every article you come across on the subject of the real estate market. Most of these articles generate more questions than answers due to the inconsistency in their conclusions. For example, in the last week I have read (reliable sources!) that new home sales are up to the highest level in 6 years and the real estate recovery is sputtering. Much of the reported news reflects the market where the reporter resides. Additionally, while the national trends are important as an overall indicator, it is our own local trends that are critical to the planning process. For the first time in my letter I have included below graphs. They represent the Northeast Florida Association of Realtors “Historical Pending Sales Activity” and the “Historical Closed Sales Activity” from 2003-2014. I have overlapped each graph with a trend line to emphasize our market experience absent monthly fluctuations. Going back to those “complicated questions and simple answers”: What are the trends telling us about the market? Looking at the “Historical Pending Sales Activity” graph, we see that pending sales of 2,321 for June, 2014 are very close to the pending sales in June, 2005. We know 2005 was the peak of the market-U. S. wide. While closed sales numbers for June, 2014 at 2,131 are not quite as dramatic as those in June, 2005; they are approaching the recent peak activity. I would also like to point out that rate of climb to the peak of 2005 was more accelerated than what has occurred since the deep trough of 2008. I personally believe that is good for the market. A slower, more stable growth gives the market a stronger foundation from which to build.

“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.” Dr. Seuss Pricing, both median and average, continues to improve but still has a long way to go to reach the 2005 levels. The real question facing the real estate market and the overall economy is whether these trends will continue; however slow the pace. We have a great team to assist you with any real estate needs. Feel free to give me a call.

Journey through AUTISM by Jennifer Brown

A

utism is a term used frequently in our current society yet it is rarely understood. People whose lives have been touched by it seek answers and often must take a journey alone to find help for their children. This is the beginning of a series about Autism – It is the story of Jennifer and Christian; one brave and determined Mother who has been able to tap into resources which have helped heal her son in dramatic ways.

Christian’s story begins on November 9, 2000 at 5:14am, a precious new bundle of joy with endless opportunities ahead of him. When Christian was born, I counted his fingers and toes. I listened as they stated his Apgar score was 9. Christian came home a very healthy baby of 6lbs 1oz. Within weeks I was unable to breast feed and was forced to switch to formula. After a few days of being on formula, he started showing signs of having a very hard time with digestion. One hour after every feeding he would cry for a solid hour, and then he would get hungry again. This went on for weeks. I was told by his pediatrician that it was colic. He said there was nothing else that I could do for him and that he would have to grow out of it. He advised that I should try changing bottles and formula. I went to see Dr. Carter, my chiropractor since the age of 9. When I walked in his office and he saw the pure exhaustion on my face, he was curious about Christian. While explaining to him about the colic, he was already taking him out of the carrier and was gently laying him on his lap. He then proceeded to adjust Christian and he fell asleep, in what seemed like seconds. He seemed more relaxed than I have ever seen him. His colic was corrected and from that day forward he had no problems with digestion. He was a very happy, loving child. He could spend his days with just one or two toys, and was perfectly content with his own company. He was progressing through every milestone as expected. During his first 12 months, Christian’s vocabulary was growing. Words like mamma, dada, baba, and ball became part of his every day vocabulary. He would point at airplanes in the sky and told me he loved me. He colored and played with other children. One of my many favorite memories I have of Christian, as a baby, is that anytime he saw me on the opposite side of our glass door, I had to kneel down and kiss him through the glass. He was such a momma’s boy. He loved to be touched, held, and cuddled. I rocked him to sleep every night. I started to find that, sometimes touching him seemed to cause him irritation. There were nights that the only way to soothe him was to put him in his vibrating bouncer chair, turn on “someone like you” by Sarah McLaughlin (I could never change the song. It was an exact recipe.) And hold the bouncer and sway it from side to side until he drifted off. I thought it was odd, but he seemed to love it and it was the only thing that worked when he was having “one of those nights” so I was happy to do it for him. Soon, Christian started displaying some problems with his speech. He began to withdraw more and more into his own world, and eventually stopped talking completely. He started having difficulty sleeping and had chronic ear infections. Doctors placed tubes in his ears and suggested speech therapy, A cheerful therapist from Holland came to our home every morning for speech therapy. They played for about 30 minutes a morning and then we would go on to work and school. One morning, she came in and sat right down with me and started telling me that she has noticed some odd behaviors. She then mentioned the word AUTISM. Like any normal mom, I kicked her out of my house and told her she was crazy. I was in denial. At that point more professionals started using the word Autism. So against my own desire, I took him to be evaluated. On May 12, 2003 at 2 ½ years old, Christian was diagnosed with Autism. I have a child on the spectrum!!! I didn’t know what a spectrum was and all the general public seemed to know about it was a movie called Rain Man. Little did I know I was going to

22

spend the next 10 years and more of my life learning what autism really meant. It meant losing jobs, relationships, friends, pushing my family away. It meant shopping in the middle of the night so I didn’t have to take him to the grocery store. It meant giving up my life so I could figure out how to live. It also meant fighting for my child, never giving up hope, and to NEVER SAY NEVER! As a single mom with a child like Christian, it was very difficult to maintain my career in healthcare and still have him to all scheduled therapies and attend all the IEP meetings. I explored speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social and emotional therapy, ABA services, respite care for my sanity. This was a very hard time for me accepting all these facts being thrown at me. I was told that Christian would never speak again. I was told he may never be potty trained. The worst part came when I was told that due to his estimated size later on in life that I would have to put him in a home. They advised that he would become too big and too violent for me to handle. I remember leaving that day filled with loss. Watching my baby boy in the back seat playing so innocently and yet in such a world all his own. I wanted to understand his world. I wanted to spend time in it with him. I thought if I could get in his world with him, that I could pull him out into mine. I was a mom on a mission!!! I read! Boy oh boy, did I read. I researched, I called places, spoke with a multitude of different therapists and doctors. I then went through the process of elimination. I started with C.A.R.D. (the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities) which is an amazing supportive agency and they helped me put together a communication book to use with Christian. It was VERY helpful for us both. We also learned sign language together and I used a combination of the two to communicate with my son. Also, making a minor change to his diet made a huge impact in our lives. A friend’s dad found a study based out of Canada about the Gluten and Casein Free Diet. There was very little information on it at the time, and it hard to obtain it. His practitioner said that the study was not recognized in the states and he did not have any proof that it worked. He stated not to take him off the milk but RATHER, he might not be getting enough??? From the moment I picked Christian up from day care until we got home; milk was the only thing on his mind. He was craving it. Like an addiction. Little did I know then, that is exactly what it was. I went against the advice of his medical doctor and removed all Casein. CHRISTIAN SAID HIS NAME FOR THE FIRST TIME THE VERY NEXT DAY!! He still remains mostly casein free to this day. In 2003, just a few short months after receiving his diagnosis, I enrolled Christian into the Alachua County public School system through the ESE Department. They found a school that had a specialty class for children like Christian. I’ll never forget watching him climb those large steps onto the school bus for the first time. He seemed so small and young to have so much to deal with. I stood there and wondered as I waved goodbye to him, does he feel alone? Does he know that I am right here with him, fighting with him to get answers? As I watched him sit down in his seat on that big yellow bus, barely able to see out of the window, I blew him a kiss and said a little prayer as the bus slowly pulled away. I wondered, If I am scared, how can he feel brave? I wiped my face and tried desperately to catch my breath as I headed to work trying to keep from feeling guilty for sending my little baby off into a world so big.

OUR TEACHERS They Inspire, They Create Thinkers They Rock!

Photos by Graham Martin, Ancient City Photography

by Lisa Farese Year after year, St. Johns County Schools have ranked among the top schools in the state. In fact, they have been ranked first in the state, out of 67 other districts, based on FCAT points for the last five years. Additionally, the school system has been a grade A district for the past 10 years with 17 schools in the district being awarded an A in 2014. And while facts and figures are a great way to get a birds-eye view of our schools, we wanted to take a look at our district that goes beyond the numbers. We wanted to meet some of the dedicated individuals behind these facts and figures—our teachers.

Derek Coghlan

Jeni West Music Teacher at Timberlin Creek Elementary

English Teacher at Nease High School

Originally from New Mexico, Jeni West moved to our area when her husband’s job transferred them here. Now in love with the climate, the schools for her children, the community and her church, West says the move has been “a blessing.” Having been involved in music since she was five, West continued to pursue her love of music throughout her school years and credits none other than her teachers as sources of inspiration. One in particular was Dr. John Peed. “He was one of those teachers who didn’t just teach, he cared,” she said. While in college, she decided she wanted to teach music and first thought high school students would be her focus. However, another teaching mentor would show her a different path. “I had a great teacher who taught elementary music, and I learned what you could teach younger children,” West said. “I loved watching the light bulbs go off and seeing the wonder and smiles when they made beautiful music.” Now at Timberlin Creek Elementary, she teaches music, organizes grade-level performances for the kindergarten, second and fifth grade classes as well as conducts several after-school music programs with more than 100 participating students. Outside of school, West is very involved in her church where she also shares her music talents. Not to mention, she enjoys spending time with her family. “These activities speak to how I am able to live life and maintain a positive attitude.” She said. And when it comes to students in her classroom, she hopes

26

to inspire music in their lives for years to come. “I want students to know that music can be a part of their lives forever,” she said. “It doesn’t matter who you are, music can speak to you in some way.”

Originally from Ireland, Derek Coghlan came to visit a friend who lived nearby and discovered he liked the town of St. Augustine and decided to stay—that was 24 years ago. Today he still considers St. Augustine a great place to call home. “The people that are attracted to St. Augustine are the kind of people I like to hang out with,” he said. “We live in a town that everyone else wants to live in.” As a teacher in St. Johns County since 1997, he enjoys the opportunity to share his passions with students. “Teaching was something I always wanted to do, and I was always interested in English and history,” he said. “There was never anything else.” It is going beyond the words that Coghlan likes best about teaching. “I enjoy introducing students to great literature and getting them to think about it and understand the ‘why’ behind it,” he said. “If they connect to it and understand that writing doesn’t exist in a vacuum, I get a better response to it, and that’s been my experience.” In his spare time, he enjoys putting on one-man shows, often of a humorous nature, partaking in soccer, acting as a wedding officiant, and announcing for mixed martial arts (MMA) tournaments. This, he believes, all ties back to his role in the classroom. “Good teaching in many ways is a performance,” he said. “You have to be on every day and for every class because there’s nowhere to hide in the classroom.” And students in Coghlan’s class don’t leave without the ability to question. “I hope students take away the idea that you need to question everything and that it’s OK to question things and disagree in a rational way,” he said. “We’ve got to have more thinkers; it’s the way forward.” True to his practice in the classroom, Coghlan leaves us with a concept to think about. “Teachers, not business owners, are the real job creators,” he said.

A Letter From St. Johns County Public Schools The St. Johns County School District continues to foster an environment that ensures its students are on the path to success. Our stu-

Rebecca Royal Fourth Grade Teacher at Palencia Elementary

dents have worked hard to exceed expectations and have been fortunate enough to have the support of a caring and dedicated group of teachers, staff, and administrators. This past school year, St. Johns

Florida native Rebecca Royal first moved to St. Augustine as a college student after she was awarded a volleyball scholarship to play at Flagler College. And here she would stay upon graduation because of her love for the area. “I believe it is a small town with big events and so much to do,” Royal said. “St. Augustine has the perfect atmosphere.” As a teacher in the county for the past three years, and this year’s Rookie Teacher of the Year, Royal is a fourth-grade teacher at Palencia Elementary. Here she helps create “ah-ha” moments in the classroom for her students. “I love seeing the connection students make between previous knowledge and the new knowledge. It’s such a wonderful experience to see how excited they are when they are creating something like bank reinforcements to learn about erosion, and their project works,” she said. “Teaching is a rewarding profession because moments like these happen every day.” Royal also finds that one of her favorite pastimes, playing volleyball, helps her transform her classroom into a positive learning environment. “I believe that a successful classroom is one that has the same comradery as an athletic team,” she said. “Students need to feel comfortable in the classroom to make mistakes and take risks just as you do on a sports team. They need to realize that everyone works together to achieve a task or goal.” In addition to teamwork, she also hopes her students discover a love of learning, which can be easier than ever in the digital age. “Students in this day and age have everything so readily available to them,” Royal said. “If they want to learn about something, all they have to do is take out their technology device and look up anything on Google.” Of course, the love and inspiration to learn have to be there and often come from none other than our teachers.

County was one of only 11 school districts statewide that was designated as a High-Performing School District by the State Board of Education. I am an advocate for academic achievement and believe that in order to accomplish this, it is paramount that the focus remains on the individual needs of every student. Every effort is made to provide teachers with the resources they need for effective instruction which supports high expectations. Through evaluation, training and support we continue to develop high-quality personnel who focus on student growth and achievement. High-stakes testing continues to place strong demands on our students, teachers, and administrators. Despite these challenges, SJCSD students throughout the district have excelled. For the past five years, students in St. Johns County have led the state in total FCAT points. In addition, our students scored the highest in the state on the Geometry, Biology, US History, and Civics End of Course Exams (EOCs). I am so very proud of our students’ impressive achievements, both in and out of the classroom. Two new K-8 schools, Patriot Oaks Academy and Valley Ridge Academy, are opening their doors to students this fall. The community of St. Johns County has always provided support to the district through a very high level of parental involvement and business partnerships. Approximately 17,000 volunteers provided 309,771 hours in service to the school district during the 2012-2013 school year. This support is a huge factor in the district’s success and its ability to maintain an “A” grade for the last 10 consecutive years. Sincerely, Joseph G. Joyner, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools

A Message from The Vet ~ Dr. Veling, DVM Palencia Pet Clinic

Cheap Cat Vaccines Causing Tumors, Its Happening

About a year go I wrote about avoiding cheap cat vaccines in order to prevent Vaccine Associated Sarcomas. That will never happen to your cat, right? Unfortunately, that may be wrong. Yesterday, a client of mine brought in their neighbor’s cat that they love. He is a huge, beautiful, medium-haired orange tabby, 2 year-old cat, named Harley. (The name has been changed to protect the innocent.) Harley is a real people-oriented cat. He is the type of cat that every cat owner wants. Harley has a lump the size of a golf ball on his upper right shoulder. It is very hard. It is irregular in shape. It does not hurt. It was first noticed by my client about two months ago. It got a little smaller initially but has grown larger recently. This is a very sad situation. The actual owner of this cat thinks that the lump is being caused by fleas. The tumor should be removed surgically soon with a large amount of tissue around the tumor in every direction. If this surgery is not done by an experienced, aggressive surgeon, there will be another beautiful dead cat. It will grow back if it is not removed with a wide surgery. When it grows back it will grow back faster and be more malignant. The first surgery is the best chance for Harley to survive. If he survives he will be normal. Warm, Compassionate, Affordable Care The tumor is caused by adjuvant in cheap, killed vaccines for cats. “Killed” vaccines all contain adjuvant. The adjuvant travels from the injection site over weeks, months or years. As it travels it can cause a tumor at any time. There have been cats that have had this type of tumor develop three years after being vaccinated and not receiving another vaccine. 904-824-1622 There is an agreement in veterinary medicine that vaccines are to be given in different places on a cat’s body. Right front leg is used for Feline Distemper Vaccine. Right hind leg is used for Feline Rabies Vaccine. Left hind leg is used for Leukemia Virus Vaccine. The veterinarian who vaccinated HarINITIAL EXAM ley did not follow the vaccine site protocol. Shame on him or her. Shame on (a $27.50 value) Valid for New Clients or him or her for using killed, cheap vaccines. It does not matter which facility New Pet Only vaccinated this cat. It might have been a humane society. It was vaccinated Valid with coupon / Not valid with any other offer by a veterinary practice in nearby before being seen by my practice. Someone Exp 8/31/2014 used the wrong vaccines in the wrong spot on this cat’s body. Harley may pay with his life. I hope that I will get the chance to save Harley. The frustrating part is that it is not up to me to save Harley. It is up to an owner that I have never met, who does not know me or how passionate I am in preventing this 159 Palencia Village Drive, Suite 101 terrible disease. Ask your veterinarian what kind of vaccine they use for cats. (next to Starbucks at Palencia) Mon, Tues & Thurs 8am-6pm, Run away if it is killed.
