Connecting the Growing Communities of Northern St. Johns

St. Johns magazine www.stjohnsmag.com

Dear Reader, I am sure I don’t have to tell you we have a lot of artistic talent in northeast Florida - most likely it is something you already know! But each time I see a new artist’s work or meet someone special at First Friday Art Walk in St. Augustine, I am reminded of one of the main reasons I moved to this amazing community. Our love and appreciation for art and the artist mentality is something we all seem to share. This month learn about the 450th Mosaic Project and some amazing local artists. While not everyone is as gifted as Artists Beau Redmond or Jenna Alexander, for those locals who love to paint for the pure enjoyment of it, our cover this month features Painting with a Twist in Fruit Cove, a new art studio that celebrates painting, fun and friends. Please enjoy our expanded calendar focusing on the arts, including the entire 2014-15 season for the Limelight Theater, as well as all the other usual stuff! Remember to tell our advertisers you found them in St. Johns Magazine - it is thanks to them we are able to produce this each month for you! Thank you!

On a recent evening in Fruit Cove about twenty women (and a

few men) gathered together with glasses of cabernet, cheese & veggie platters and paint brushes to paint a scene of a sky ablaze with lighting and distant mountains. At the front of the studio, an artist leads the class through each step and stroke. As the group makes its way from blank canvas to final masterpiece there is a lot of laughter and some great tunes playing in the background. It’s more of an art party than an art class and it is what happens at Painting with a Twist, the new art studio in our neighborhood.

Beau Redmond at Butterfield Garage NOVEMBER 2014 “People, Places and Things”

Beau Redmond’s new show at Butterfield Garage (November 7-30, 2014) offers an eclectic range of subject matter and style. The newspaper and magazine collages for which he is best known are included, along with evocative portraits and “concrete abstracts” -- paintings that at first appear to be abstract patterns but upon closer observation become recognizable as familiar objects in the real world. His favorite places are represented -- St. Augustine, New Orleans, New York -- and his people, whether close family members or strangers, are treated with equal sensitivity, their engaging backstories subtly revealed in the brushstrokes. Redmond is a native of New Orleans who had his first solo exhibition in 1968 in the French Quarter’s Downtown Gallery. Today his work is internationally known and his paintings can be found in many private, corporate and public collections. He has lived in St. Augustine for the past 20 years. Reflexology for a Healthier World by John Guinta

The modern world is an amazing place, with all of the advancements in technology that help us humans achieve still greater advances. These advancements do not come without a price. As we put more and more demands on ourselves to “achieve” in the various facets of our existence, we inevitably add more stress to our lives. Study and research indicate that stress contributes to lower immune responses and often to the body’s inability to heal itself. More and more people today seek out alternative methods of healing, and many are discovering an ancient bodywork modality known as Reflexology. The principle theory behind this

ologist as part of your overall health plan you will find that the treatment is completely non-invasive. Foot reflexology only requires the removal of shoes and socks for the work to be done. Reflexology on the hands is equally beneficial as it produces the same results as work on the feet. The relaxation you will achieve from an experienced, certified reflexologist can produce amazing results; stress will melt away and your body can do the job of healing itself, as it was designed to do. Each year the International Council of Reflexologists designates the 3rd week of September as World Reflexology Week. This year the week of September 18th thru September 25th will be celebrated by reflexologists world-wide. Workshops, fundraising events and seminars are held in many localities to raise public awareness of this

soothing art/science is that by applying alternating pressure to certain areas of the hands or feet we stimulate reflexes which correspond to all of the other body parts. The stimulation of these reflexes result in stress reduction and relaxation, which in turn allows physiological changes to occur in the rest of the body. This is when healing takes place. Reflexology, in its earliest forms, was practiced for thousands of years in cultures all over the globe. It is documented as far back as 4,000 years ago in ancient Egypt and was believed to have migrated to Europe with the Roman Empire. A type of reflexology was practiced in ancient China and India as well as Japan. Early inhabitants of the Americas (Inca and Maya) are also believed to have had their own forms of reflexology, and the more modern Cherokee Indians of this country employ a specific type of footwork as a healing technique. As early as the 1500’s we see writings in early European medical texts describing what was to become known as “zone therapy” which, like reflexology today, worked on the premise that longitudinal (vertical) zones of the body link the feet and hands with other organs in that zone, similar to the meridians of Chinese medicine. Modern reflexology evolved from zone therapy in the early 20th century. It was primarily the result of the work of one woman, Eunice Ingham, who worked for and with Dr. Joseph Shelby Riley, right here in Florida in the 1930’s. Many practitioners consider Ingham to be the mother of reflexology and she is still honored today for her work and research. Ingham was the first to completely “map” the body and the corresponding reflexes in the feet. Eventually hands were seen as an alternative to the feet, offering another avenue to stimulate the organs of the body and later research proved that to be the case. Today practitioners can work on both hands and feet achieving the same stress reducing results. Exciting findings of Dr Jesus Manzanares of Barcelona, Spain lend greater scientific credibility to the use of reflexology as a healing modality. His research over the past 27 years (taken from over 70,000 clinical cases) has shed new light on the nervous system pathways of reflexology. His studies have given us more precise mapping of reflex points used in foot reflexology. And as a result of his research he has also established reflexology protocols for pathologies. He is currently touring the United States speaking about his findings. So how can we all benefit from this stress reducing health regimen? With a little bit of instruction it is something that most people can apply to themselves, requiring no special tools. The use of one’s fingers and/or thumb is all that is required to apply the pressure needed to achieve results. If you choose to see a practicing reflex-

stress-reducing bodywork modality. In conjunction with World Reflexology Week, a public outreach/education program will be held by NE Florida reflexologists at the University of North Florida (UNF) on Sunday September 25th from 11:30 am until 3:00 pm in Building 58 West

Artist & Photographer Jenna Alexander

EVEN YOU WILL BE INSPIRED

BY ARTIST’S PAIRING OF ART & HEART By Lisa Farese

A series of tiny dots made with a paint brush tip smaller than a pinky finger in vibrant greens, blues, yellows and browns captures the eye. After a few steps back to catch a full glimpse of the 4 foot by 4 foot canvas, a child’s face emerges. In fact, nearly the entire back wall of this St. Augustine gallery is filled with these incredible faces painted in oil paints with an impressionistic flair. And just as these young faces were woven together with tiny dots of color, a painstaking labor of love that takes 40 to 60 hours each canvas, beautiful threads woven into African fabric adorn the edges of each painting, each one with unique patterns and colors brought home from Tanzania. One can’t help but wonder who these children are. What are their names? What is their story? Well, they are Frank, John, Glory, Aneth, Mary, Rebecca, Irene, Maurin, Beatrice and Isaka to name a few, and they are among a class of 24 orphaned children in Tanzania. Here artist and photographer Jenna Alexander spent a year with the Rafiki Foundation teaching preschool and firstgrade art and physical education to these 24 orphaned children, and as she left these children with newly imparted knowledge, she came home with inspiration. “They taught me more than I taught them,” Alexander said. From this knowledge, the Even Me project was born. With a campaign on Kickstarter.com, Alexander raised the funds needed for the materials to create this series of paintings, but they didn’t start as paintings. While in Tanzania, Alexander was also able to devote a great deal of her time to photography. “There

12

were so many beautiful faces and people there,” she said. “You can’t go out at night there, so I learned to edit photographs.” These photographs of her students would later inspire her project. “It works for me to do different mediums and have different creative outlets,” Alexander said. “I love the social aspect of photography, but I also love the solitude of art, so I paired the two.” This pairing of art and photography can been seen throughout her gallery. With photography including wedding, maternity and family portraits, to the Even Me paintings, to cartoon characters of couples or bridesmaids, to her naptime botanicals series and even a distillery label, her talents appear limitless. So, as Alexander continues work on the Even Me project and prepares to show 12 of these pieces at the Ponte Vedra Cultural Center in April 2015, she hopes to eventually sell the these pieces and donate the proceeds back to the children, some of whom have even seen their completed paintings through Skype, for their college or vocational funds. And you may want to stop by the gallery to see her work in person, for due to the unique perspective of the paintings, passersby still have much to discover. “I don’t want to tell the whole story because we don’t know the whole story,” Alexander says when asked about this unique perspective. Neither do we. So, catch a glimpse for yourself at the Jenna Alexander Gallery located at 77 San Marco Avenue, Unit 3, or visit www.jenna-alexander.com.

Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears. -Les Brown

Real Estate Market News by Sherry P. Davidson There is still a lot of fear and uncertainty about the economy and the national real estate market. The real estate trends have been more positive locally. The Northeast Florida Association of Realtors July market stats continues to show pending sales increasing, inventory of homes for sale decreasing and median and average sales prices increasing. All very positive. The pending sales for July of 2,335 are 17% higher than last July. We are up more than 10% year to date. If you saw the graph last month, we are inching closer to the almost 2,500 monthly pending sales experienced in the peak of the market which had only occurred for 2 months. Closings of 2,104 are up 5% over last July and 5% year to date. Nationally, closings year to date are down from last year. The NAR economist, Lawrence Yun recently said he thought the closings nationally would catch up in the last half of the year and finish about the same as 2013. We are already ahead of last year locally so if sales and closings stay strong, we should have a much better year than 2014. The median sales price in July of $166,964 is up 1% over last July and we are up 3% year to date. The average sales price in July of $217,870 is up 5% over last July and we are up 4% year to date. Although home prices continue to climb slowly, we are still not close to peak market pricing.

Inventory of 10,019 homes for sale is down 2.5% since last July even with increased builder activity. We are currently at 5.1 months supply of inventory which is down 12% from last July. The inventory of homes for sale in the under $150,000 price range is down over 20%. Every other price category inventory increased except for $1 million and above which was only down 0.6%. Distressed inventory is down to 22% of the total inventory from 34% last July. The share of lender-mediated closings is now 31% compared to 35% last July. At the worst point of the market almost 60% of the closings were lender-mediated. It is a great time to buy a home or an investment property. Many of the larger investors have moved onto other markets and there is a much smaller percentage of first time home buyers in the market because of lending constraints. I see continued improvement in our local housing market for the rest of the year. I’m enjoying the beginning of football season with the Jaguars showing a lot of promise. Please let me know if we can help in any way with any of your real estate needs.

Family comes first, and it is one of the reasons why he loves owning his own business - so he can be available for his children after school. He loves to fish and enjoys taking his boat on the intercoastal water way and entering in King Fisher tournaments. He says it is a great way to get away from stress. Do you hear that? It sounds like a million crickets. No, I can’t be hearing crickets, I’m inside. It is tinnitus. Tinnitus is the medical term for the perception of sound in the ear, or ears or head, when no external sound is present. It sounds different to everyone. My patients describe it as ‘ringing’, ‘whooshing’, ‘whistling’ or ‘crickets’. What causes tinnitus? The precise cause of tinnitus is not fully understood. It is generally accepted that tinnitus is a side effect of damage to the auditory or hearing system. It is a very personal condition and there is not one cause. It is not uncommon, 10 – 15% of the population experience tinnitus. One in 5 people between 55 and 65 years old report some tinnitus symptoms. Our auditory system consists of the outer ear, middle ear, inner ear and the auditory center in our brain. Ear wax, an ear infection or even a brain tumor can cause tinnitus. Certain medications cause tinnitus, but the most common cause is inner ear hearing loss. Reduced hearing is thought to cause increased activity within the auditory system. 80% of people with tinnitus also have hearing loss. In some cases this loss is so mild that the person does not even know it exists. The best place to begin is the complete evaluation which includes hearing testing and reviewing of your medical history. A Doctor of Audiology will develop a management plan tailored to your hearing, tinnitus and lifestyle. There are medical devices, hearing aids, tinnitus maskers, and combination hearing aids with maskers that help manage tinnitus. Dr. Rosann Faull and Dr. Leslie Newmeyer have the education, training and experience to develop the best tinnitus management plan for you. Learn more by attending our Tinnitus Workshop. Journey through AUTISM Part 2

by Jennifer Brown

This is a story of one boy and his struggle not to let Autism clam him and of a mother that would do anything to find the key that would set his mind free and open doors they never thought possible. This is Christian’s story - A journey through Autism.

In the last issue, Christian just started a program in a local Gainesville elementary school for developmentally delayed children. He was just 2 ½ when his journey as a pupil began. He seemed to love the structure of school and all the new things to learn. They incorporated most of his therapies during the day including occupational, speech, and social skills training. When they weren’t working on building skills they were trying to teach him self-help skills like potty training and tying his laces. Most often you would catch Christian with that hazy stare, like he was in a faraway place. At times I would just watch him ‘play’ and wonder what was going on in that little mind. He didn’t play with toys as other children did. He was more interested in how they worked or moved (or how it could come apart). His days at home were pretty much a mirror of what he did in school. I learned very quickly that any interruption of his routine would send him in a tail spin of anxiety. We hung a Velcro schedule in his room just like the one in his class. That schedule was also mirrored in his communication book with hundres of little Velcro pictures I used to communicate with him. His OCD really started kicking in during this time. He learned that I could drive him to school by taking a route that only used left hand turns. He would have a full meltdown anytime I went another route. This obsession with routes and roads and how they connected (in his mind) sadly, went on for years. During this time his diet also seemed to get worse by the day. We were down to only a few very unhealthy choices and condiments. Yes, I said condiments. Christian’s idea of a tasty meal consisted of a tall glass of MILK and a plate of canned green beans and ketchup. As his diet declined, so did his mental clarity. He seemed to be slipping further and further into a dark abyss. During dinner one evening when Christian was about 8 years old, his 6 year old brother Jacob was telling me about his day at school. When suddenly Christian jumped from his chair and threw himself in my

22

lap and started to sob. When I turned him to meet my gaze, something was very different. His lost hazy stare was gone. His face seemed so different. Even his facial expressions were different. At first I panicked. I had never seen this before and I wasn’t sure what was happening. And then I started listening to the things he was saying. He was talking so fast I could hardly keep up, franticly trying to absorb every word. Christian snapped out of “his world” and was right here in mine. He told me that he was sorry for all the times he hurt me. He told me he loved me more than anyone and he knew how hard caring for him was on me. And then he grabbed my hand with both of his, wrapped his fingers around them and thanked me for being his mother. I’ll never, EVER forget that he used the word MOTHER because he called me mom from the time he learned to speak again and nothing else. He looked at his little brother and told him that he looks up to him so much and wants so badly to be like him. He sobbed as he spoke and the two of us sat there hugging him and crying. And as a patient with Alzheimer’s disease slips away right before your very eyes, so did Christian. Back into a world of anxious energy. I watched his face and his body as the stiffness came back. His eyes once again met with a haze. His brain locked away in some faraway place. Once again, he was the Christian we all had come to know. After spending the next 20 minutes in my room crying my eyes out, I wrote it all down because I never wanted to forget a single bit of it. What I didn’t realize was I would spend the next 4 years holding onto that memory because it was the only time I felt a true connection with my son. That is until our lives were forever changed. Stay tuned to hear how one local Jacksonville Doctor reversed Christian’s Autism.

Weird Science (?)

Hello!! My name is Qua ntum. I am a 1 year old, female short hai r cat and I was brought to the SJC Pet Center as a stray. I am very sweet, I lov e to purr and I play well with my fellow feline friends. My favorite toy is a laser light. Please visit me and be my forever family.

All of us have seen those shows on Animal Planet where pets have

pain medication as we nor-

behavior problems and someone arrives to help them, whether it is Caesar or

mally do for post-op pain.

“The Pet Psychic.” Let me go on record right away by saying that there have

for suture removal and was walking normally.

A pet whose behavior is abnormal should never be confronted directly in a threatening manner. Caesar has done this and has paid the price with a bad bite from the pet. Videos of him getting bitten are shown at veterinary behavior seminars to teach how not to “retrain” a pet.

In general, shows like “The Pet Psychic” get panned by veterinar-

That was no coincidence. Mary has a talent that is God-given to

communicate with animals. I had a good friend who is a veterinarian who had an experience with a client who contacted Mary. He was angry and accused Mary of fraud. I told him my story. I don’t know to this day if he believed me but I can’t control what other people think. Weird Science

Warm, Compassionate, Affordable Care

I had heard about a woman, Mary Marshall, who had this

talent. I saw a 10 year old, male Norwegian Elkhound one day because he was limping on his left front leg. I found a benign tumor above the elbow. I checked the tumor and found it was a lipoma, a tumor of the

fat cells. They are a benign, non-invasive, non-painful tumor of the fat cells. Many dogs have them. I do not recommend removing lipomas. So, we took x-rays. No lesions found. I sent the dog home on a NonSteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug. He was back a week later with no improvement. That is unusual.

The owner asked me if I minded her calling Mary Marshall.

I had already heard about her from another client. She called Mary. Mary told her to touch her dog. Over the phone Mary said that he had a tumor on his leg that is benign but it is pinching a nerve underneath

it. This was from a woman who has no training in anatomy. The owner relayed this to me. I said, “I am game. Let’s take out the tumor.”

When I took the tumor out I made an incision into a connec-

tive tissue structure known as fascia. The tumor was underneath it. It was being pinched onto a nerve, artery and vein triplet. I pealed out the tumor without damaging the nerve, artery or vein, closed the fascia, the tissue beneath the skin and the skin. The dog went home on the same
