Decatur named first Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community in Georgia The League of American Bicyclists honored the efforts of City of Decatur to build better places for people to bike with a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award. Decatur joins 497 communities across the country in the movement for safer streets and better bicycling for everyone. The award recognizes Decatur for its commitment to creating transportation and recreational resources that benefit residents of all ages and abilities while encouraging healthier and more sustainable transportation choices. “Biking has the power to transform our nation economically, environmentally and socially and it’s so important that communities like Decatur have laid the groundwork over several years to make biking a safe, accessible option for all. With many more Americans turning to biking as a fun way to get outdoors and as a necessary transportation option, we must keep the momentum to build a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone going,” said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. “This Bicycle Friendly Community award is the culmination of years of work put in by City of Decatur and its citizen advocates for better biking. This award round, Decatur joins 57 new and renewing Bicycle Friendly Communities in the movement toward healthier, more sustainable and connected places. As we gear up for what we hope to be a transformational new year for biking investments, we’re grateful that Decatur and communities like it are pedaling alongside us to power the better bicycling movement.”

Ebster Pool offers a huge pool deck for enjoying the sun, a snack area, shade shelter, morning swim lessons and Decatur’s only diving board. Ebster is the home of the Decatur Gators swim team. Constructed in the summer of 1981, it is the newest of Decatur’s pools. Located on Atlanta Avenue and W. Trinity Place, behind the Police Department. Ebster also has lap lanes in place throughout the day for lap swimmers.

The largest pool in Decatur, Glenlake is also the busiest. It offers snack areas, a patio for enjoying the sun, shade shelter, and shallow water for little ones. Located on Church Street, one block north of Commerce Drive.

McKoy Pool incorporates a zero entry (beach entry) access pool, making it easier for elderly and handicapped residents to use; bubbler features to entertain younger swimmers; and dedicated lap lanes that can be scheduled for adult-only lap swimming.

Decatur’s Parks and Greenspaces

D

ecatur has 150 acres of city parks, including large recreational areas with pavilions, active greenspaces, and small neighborhood parks. Parks make life better for all of us in many ways – a cleaner environment, increased safety, healthier people, a strong sense of community and economic development.

ADAIR PARK Adair Street

GLENLAKE PARK 1121 Church St.

Adair Park, a four-acre neighborhood recreational facility, is home to the Mary Gay House, the Swanton House and a historic log cabin. There are numerous trees throughout the park and picnic tables with trash receptacles available for public use. There is also a playground area and a dog park. Adair Park is a beautiful addition to the Swanton Heights and Lenox Place communities. Street parking only.

This 17-acre park offers picnic tables, grills and trash receptacles, a swimming pool and pool house, a picnic pavilion, and a tennis center with five courts. There is a small upper field and a lower youth baseball field, basketball/volleyball court, a playground area, and an enclosed dog park.

EBSTER PARK 105 Electric Ave. A large multipurpose field is a key feature at this five-acre neighborhood recreational facility. There is a pool with a splash pad, basketball courts and a playground area. Recent additions include a small pavilion with restrooms. Decatur Active Living’s youth sports and Decatur High School’s athletic programs use the field. The park sits on the property that houses the Police Department, City Schools of Decatur Administration and Ebster Recreation Center. It shares a parking lot with City Schools of Decatur and Ebster Recreation Center staff.

GLENN CREEK NATURE PRESERVE 104 Fairview St.

This two-acre reserve of Piedmont habitat is a part of the South Fork Peachtree subwatershed. It was added to the Old Forest Network in February 2021.

LEGACY PARK 500 S. Columbia Dr. This 77-acre campus, purchased by Decatur in 2017, was created in 1873 and included a farm, gardens and residential facilities for children. The site offers opportunities for active and passive recreation and is accessible by foot, bike or car, being nestled near downtown Decatur and surrounded by neighborhoods. A conservation easement
