Decatur Embraces the Child Friendly Cities Initiative

To support children and families in need of afterschool, camp and athletics services who may not have the means to afford the full cost of programs, please consider a contribution to the Mary Miller Decatur Youth Fund. The Mary Miller Decatur Youth Fund makes it possible for children in the City of Decatur whose families cannot afford to pay for athletics, swim team, afterschool, and camp programs to participate in these enriching opportunities. The Decatur Education Foundation graciously manages this fund, which allows Decatur children in need to participate in Active Living and Children and Youth Services activities throughout the year. To make a financial contribution to the Decatur Youth Fund, mail a check made out to the Decatur Education Foundation (please write “Decatur Youth Fund” in notes) to 500 S Columbia Drive, Decatur, GA 30030. Contributions are tax deductible. For more information, contact Claire Miller at 404-378-1082 or claire.miller@decaturga.com.

The Children and Youth Services Division is partnering with Decatur Active Living, Decatur Education Foundation, Decatur Housing Authority, and City Schools of Decatur to pursue recognition from UNICEF as a Child Friendly City. Decatur is among the first six cities in the United States to sign a memorandum of agreement with UNICEF to pursue this exciting, important designation.

What is a Child Friendly City? A child-friendly city is a city, town, community or any system of local governance committed to improving the lives of children within their jurisdiction by realizing their rights as articulated in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

What does it Mean in Decatur? The Child Friendly Cities Initiative project is a multi-year project designed to engage community members – especially children and youth – to identify priorities and take action in five key goal areas: 1. Safety and Inclusion: Every child and young person is valued, respected and treated fairly within their communities and by local authorities. 2. Children’s Participation: Every child and young person has their voice, needs and priorities heard and taken into account in public laws, policies, budgets, programs and decisions that affect them. 3. Equitable Social Services: Every child and young person has access to quality essential social services. 4. Safe Living Environments: Every child and young person lives in a safe, secure and clean environment. 5. Play and Leisure: Every child and young person has opportunities to enjoy family life, play and leisure. Please visit www.childfriendlycities.org for more information on this exciting national pilot. To get connected with the City of Decatur’s CFCI effort, please contact Claire Miller at Claire.miller@decaturga.com or 404-378-1082.
