The African continent is positioning itself as a global style icon, fusing the influences of international trend-makers with the unique colour and vibrancy that characterises its people and cultures. The impact of this colourful continent on the 2019 lifestyle trends will be brought home through the features and products showcasing at Africa’s premier décor and design exhibition – Decorex SA. This year’s muchanticipated theme ‘Designing for Africa – feels like home’ encapsulates the re-birth of the African style powerhouse. Colour trends

Decorex is the canvas for the latest colour trends presented by Olympic Paints®

It was Irish poet and playwright, Oscar Wilde, who so knowledgably said: “Mere colour… can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways.” For visitors to the 2019 Decorex shows, the experience of colour has been profound as some of the country’s most on-trend designers and decor influencers crafted fun and vibrant stands using Olympic Paints® Premium

Platinum Plus Lux Range – launched at Decorex SA Working closely with Olympic Paints®, Anita Bloom, Creative Director for Decorex SA, and the Decorex creative team developed this exclusive colour range for the three Decorex shows, incorporating the dominant décor and design trends. “Being a South African-based

paint manufacturer, Olympic Paints® is really in touch with the mood and tone of the local décor scene,” said Anita Bloom. “Not only does this work so well into the 2019 ‘Designing for Africa – feels like home’ theme, but their exclusive Premium Platinum Plus Lux Range has been so inspirational for this year’s designers.”

Colour in design Getting the first peek of the latest Olympic Paints® range were the exhibitors and designers participating in this year’s Decorex Durban, which ran at the Durban Exhibition Centre from 21 to 24 March. The Night Sky hue drew particular attention with Rene Forbay Designs bringing it into their Decorex International installation, giving visitors a glimpse of the vibrant Durban life. Their abstract wall design also included the Sunset Yellow and Misty Olive from the Premium Platinum Plus Lux Range, alongside the Olympic Master Décor’s Terracotta, Shiloh and Autumn Wheat. “We really loved the colour selection this year,” said Rene Forbay. “The matt finish of Night Sky gave the stand such a natural, earthy feel.” Trestle South Africa also opted for this particular colour, alongside Mushroom Haze, as a way to embolden their display of qualitymade furniture that so perfectly reflects the popular minimalist design trend. “We wanted a warm look for the stand, with one really dramatic wall – hence the Night Sky,” explained Trestle South Africa’s Caron Van Wyk. “The space was minimalist with an interesting mixture of matt black and wooden furniture and the Night Sky provided an attractive contrast. The paint selection worked really well in the space. For the Joburg stand, I’m looking at Misty Storm or Berry Blaze.” For suppliers of upmarket décor and design products, Living Image, it was the ontrend grey tones of Misty Storm that caught the eye of visitors at this year’s stand. Bringing the colour of the Mother City into Decorex Cape Town, a kaleidoscope of Olympic Paints® hues were splashed across www.decorex.co.za

the second show, which ran at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 1 to 5 May. In the exclusive Design Pavilion, Casa Leon by Leon at CCXIX opted for Mushroom Haze to express their ‘no-nonsense’ furniture and style, while the natural, handcrafted pieces of 8 Degrees South really stood out against the stunning Emerald Intuition. The muted tones of Night Sky made another appearance, this time in the sophisticated installation by Tracy Glass Interiors while the delicious taste of Berry Blaze created a mouthwatering impact on anyone passing by Urban Tonic’s stand. Hinterveld, creators of must-have mohair products and fashion accessories, contrasted their fluffy product range with the smooth feel of Casper Grey. “We were looking for a lighter shade to complement our charcoal carpet,” explained Hinterveld’s Schandré Barnes. “For something different at Decorex Joburg, we’ve decided to go with Silver Sand. It should look amazing!”

From the experts Sanjay Parag of Olympic Paints® said that the public response to the Decorex Premium Platinum Plus Lux Range has been ‘phenomenal’: “The fresh vibrant pastel shades, complemented by the darker warmer shades, had visitors really excited about the collaboration between Olympic Paints® and Decorex. We’ve especially liked the combination of Berry Blaze and Sunshine Yellow used in the vibrant Wine + Bubbly Bar furnished by Homewood – it creates an inviting setting.” Parag said they had noted four paint colours as particularly dominant at the shows. These are: • Night Sky – a modern, on-trend colour • Emerald Intuition – a deeply exotic colour • Choc Mocha – rustic, yet with a cosy feel • Crisp Mint – a fresh and vibrant tone

Spotlight Decorex Joburg shines this year’s Designer Spotlight on Donald Nxumalo

A prominent feature on the Decorex Joburg programme, the Designer Spotlight showcases a true local talent who has made a significant contribution to the interior design world, both domestically and abroad. This year, the spotlight is on the artistic stylings of Joburg’s own Donald Nxumalo. “Having discovered his passion for design at a young age, Donald Nxumalo has swiftly made a name for himself as an incredibly talented interior designer who infuses the enduring spirit of Joburg into all his work,” said Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director at Reed Exhibitions. “His local roots and impressive work across Africa make him the perfect embodiment of this year’s theme, ‘Designing for Africa – feels like home’ .” African design influence Donald Nxumalo, winner of the SABC3 Win a Home design competition, is a driven, grounded young talent who’s excited about

the growing influence of the African continent on interior design. “I believe that Africa is finally finding its place as a global influencer because – since the beginning of time – Africa has been the birthing ground for creativity,” explained Donald. “This is evident in the historical discoveries of ancient artefacts within Africa, the rock and cave paintings, braiding and weaving of the precious jewels of the Nile, and even the great pyramids of Egypt.” He said that the global design market has been saturated with influences from Western culture and is now poised for something bold and vibrant, but not entirely foreign. “I think that what has been happening in the design industry is nothing new, but a reintroduction of something familiar,” he continued. “However, this time it is on a much grander scale and the world ready to embrace it. Africa is finally finding her place!”

‘You date a trend,

but marry a classic’ Trends in African design Embracing the African emergence, Donald Nxumalo has noted some particular trends inspired by the continent which are flowing into local homes, offices and hotels. “The major design trends we have been seeing are patterns with ever bolder colours, and geometric patterns in particular, although these are not necessarily symmetrical.” Donald said there are a number talented, young designers embracing this African style influence in a number of interesting ways: “From the likes of Siyanda Mbele with his Pan-African furniture pieces including desks, servers and side tables; to designers like Kehumile Mate with a range of vibrant ottomans in interesting shapes and vibrant colours which so wonderfully address the concern of space.”

Incorporating African style Having envisioned the interiors of the consular offices in Kenya, a Ugandan hotel and countless homes and spaces in and around South Africa, Donald is well-placed to advise on interior renovating. “What we always say at our studio is ‘You date a trend, but marry a classic’. I truly feel that the best way to incorporate these incoming trends into your design is to retain your bigger pieces in solid bases and add the colour and patterns through accessories,” explained Donald. “This way, if a few months down the line you become overwhelmed with the design, it us much easier and more cost-effective to replace, for instance, a scatter cushion rather than the entire couch.”

Getting a feel for it

Surface Tactility The average human interacts with a digital surface over 1000 times a day. This constant technological interaction leaves us craving a tactile experience with soft, porous surfaces that breathe life. Walls, fabrics and even counter tops are taking on a more tactile sensation through ceramic tiles, 3D printing and textured paint. New interior design materials – including grounded tiles, recycled plastics and materials – with more traditional materials – marble and granite – are all finding their place. Mirrors and New Circles In a space to reflect on humanity and our place in the world, mirrors form an integral subject matter that speak to who we are. Circular shapes are coming to the fore, with stylised, straight lines used to contrast this smooth flow, while many are looking towards more imperfect shapes. Wood and glass are being incorporated into this Japanese wabi-sabi style, seeking beauty within the imperfect.

Less or more?

Mindful Minimal Interiorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; The Eastern-style simplicity is echoed in Mindful Minimalism which encourages the decluttering of a life in search of harmony. Rather than overconsumption

Statement Ceilings Referred to as the ‘5th wall’, it seems Michelangelo had it right all along. Ceilings are no longer just functional and forgotten, rather gaining well-deserved attention through intricate paintwork, wooden structures and even digital imagery. Bathroom Design Merely utilitarian no more, the bathroom is an extended living space, with personalised décor, upholstered seating, cushions and clusters of pendant lighting creating a soft sanctuary. Interior to exterior Architects, landscapers and designers are working these modern styles into the outdoors. Whereas the exterior was once an afterthought, more conceptualisation is going into making this more than just ‘outside’. Matte roofs with gloss gutters; industrialstyle, red-brick feature walls; neutral palettes combined with steel and raw concrete; upgraded landscaped elements and re-envisioned garage doors and sheds are being integrated into interior design.

The right tone

A vital component of every décor aspect is colour. And you can expect some really exciting tones and hues entering 2019. • Ice cream/gelato pastels on feature walls, dining room chairs, table runners, scatter cushions, vases or doors. • Earthy colours and warm neutrals allow us to transcend the cold, sterile shades of previous years and embrace the warmth of nature. Layers of burnt orange, warm beiges and shades of green create a soothing atmosphere. • Believed to be the colour for 2019, Night Watch is a lush, rich teal which is calming, fresh and healing. • The vibrant Gen Z yellow is being mixed with greys as a pop of colour. It can be used to brighten a door or even a room as a feature wall. • Sage green is a subdued, almost neutral colour that works well with dusty pink, offering a fresh interior accent.

Bloom said the 1970s Home Décor Trend is also finding its place in the 2019 décor and design realm, with boho chic and retro glam reflected in key elements such as lighting, ribbed fabrics and re-used bricks. “The 1970s style calls for bold confidence in colours and shapes with a design that integrates easily into the modern-style trends,” explained Bloom.

“Finally, the Personal Touch Trend will never go out of style. Take inspiration from the emerging trends, but personalise them by adding elements that mean something to you. Trust yourself to know what will revitalise you in your own, safe sanctuary.”

Previously operational under a different name, the company embarked on a comprehensive brand refresh in 2019, redefining the core ethos of the business which is now ‘Innovation through Collaboration.’ A boutique firm with big-player mentality What started out as a pastime has rapidly grown into a fully-fledged business. In 2016, Mali was tasked with the challenge of turning

an empty shell into a unique yet intimate space that a family could call home. The outcome proved that her passion for interior styling and her unique perspective are a formidable combination. The fantasy and ease with which Mali communicated with inanimate objects such as her dolls became a vital skill in her design world and it’s with this child-like enthusiasm that she approaches each T.I.S project, “I need to be able to walk into a room and it has to speak to me,” says Mali. Small beginnings As a young girl from the magnificent landscapes of South Africa’s Limpopo province, Mali Langa was never destined to limitations and quiet imagination. Her eye for spotting the beauty in things was piqued at a delicate age. Whether it was observing her aunt fill her own home with interesting décor, or simply playing dress-up with dolls, choosing new outfits and re-imagining more elaborate ones; what is certain is that the effect was long-lasting inspiration for what is today the source of passion for a career in interior styling. “Design is not just work for me. When I design, I’m more relaxed. It’s like therapy for me and it makes me feel young again, like a little girl playing,” says the Sandton based interior stylist. It was out of this desire to combine work and play that Mali Langa founded Task Interior Styling, a boutique interior décor firm

duty as an interior stylist to create thoughtful, living spaces that speak to her clients. Though a relatively new player in the industry, Task Interior Styling is no stranger to delivering excellent service in both residential and commercial projects. With its strong local partnerships, an extensive supply network and frequent exposure to international interior design circles, T.I.S is able to cater to design briefs of any size. From the texture of the fabrics, the shape, form and colours of vases, to cushions and walls, Mali’s imagination interprets elements of design such as space, line, light and pattern to create what is a signature aesthetic for Task Interior Styling and clients who have had the opportunity to work with the firm.
