Welcome Beauty needs space to flourish, and Decorex Africa presents a canvas onto which exquisite design is curated, celebrated and experienced.
The future of design. The future of interiors. It’s the essence of design. This year’s much-anticipated theme “Lifestyle by design” is about freedom, reclaiming your time and doing things you like. This is essentially illustrated through design – looking to future trends when curating your own personal space – design enables us to create spaces so that we can live the way we want to. Design is the essence of life and speaks to our collective search for the things that bring us essential happiness. Through our constantly changing lifestyles and the urge to create sanctuaries in our home spaces – we find those moments of calm and empowerment, as well as optimism and luxury. The African continent is positioning itself as a global style icon, fusing the influences of international trend-makers with the unique colour and vibrancy that characterises its people and cultures. The impact of this colourful continent on the 2020 lifestyle trends will be brought home through the features and products showcasing at Africa’s premier décor and design exhibition. To mark our 19th year in Durban we planned a really strong, décor-focused show which maintains the high calibre of craftsmanship for which Decorex is renowned. This year’s exciting line-up includes our Spotlight Designer Frans Alexander, curated entrance

feature by U&G Fabrics, the ever trending Surface Trend Bar by Jamson Stone, the beautifully designed Tribal Restaurant, Art Café and Neon Gin Jungle. This years’ design-centric showcase will leave you truly inspired. We are always re-inventing, re-investing and changing to suit the constantly evolving décor and industry and all its associated trends. It is important for us to know exactly what is happening on a global level from a décor viewpoint, as well as within the exhibition space. We have always worked hard to remain ahead of the game in South Africa, establishing ourselves as leaders in both the décor and exhibition fields. A huge thank you to my dedicated and passionate team, who live the brand each day of their lives, and have made the exhibition what it is today.

Spotlight
Everyday Luxury
Frans Alexander brings a sense of flair to Decorex Durban
A leading Durban interior designer driven by the satisfaction of his clients, Frans Alexander describes himself as a perfectionist: ‘I’m driven by the result and outcome of each project. Knowing that I have achieved the desired emotion is what pushes me to ensure every one of my clients’ experiences the sense of joy design can bring!’ Frans Alexander Interiors’ was founded in 2002 and the company works across Residential, Hospitality and Commercial projects. But for all his projects, Alexander tends to be led by a feeling, an ethos, rather than an aesthetic. ‘I believe that the key to each successful interior lies in the details and it’s there where I like to invest a lot of effort in order to achieve a wellexecuted space. The small details are what elicit an emotional response from a space,’ he notes. Over and above his own vision however, the designer aims with each project to reflect the client’s own viewpoint. ‘The goal is to create a space which is unique and reflects the homeowner’s personality, but one that is also functional, timeless and comfortable,’ he says. 6

The satisfaction that comes from a job well done is something that inspires and motivates Frans Alexander. Projects like the villa he designed recently in Polokwane – which was featured on SABC’s Top Billing – stand out for him. The client wanted a family home that combined luxury and comfort, but beyond that he was given great creative freedom and it shows in the end result. The best sense of achievement for Frans Alexander is when he sees the client’s gratitude for the end result. Other recently completed projects include a number of residential projects, such as House Zondi, a family residence in Mount Edgecombe, as well as the waiting room for a medical facility and an aesthetic practice. www.decorex.co.za

You’ll be able to see Frans Alexander’s passion in action and appreciate the dedication to his craft firsthand at Decorex Durban in March 2020, as he has been selected as the Feature Designer for the prestigious show. A longtime friend of Decorex, he has participated in the annual event for many years – from heading up the ECR Man Cave to being chosen as the Spotlight Designer in 2016. He’s also played the role of Decorex stand judge – assessing other designers and brands’ exhibition stands and awarding those that really stand out. As a leading showcase for interior design trends, Decorex Durban is a must-visit on the calendar for design insiders wanting to keep abreast of current developments, as well as homeowners looking for exciting new products and inspirational ideas for 8

their own spaces. Frans Alexander agrees that it’s a crucial platform to allow designers to engage with the public and the industry. ‘I’ve always loved the show’s ability to introduce design to people. Decorex Durban has always been a showcase for the design community where they can weigh up what is relevant and upcoming,’ he says. For this year’s event, Frans Alexander will draw on his own notion of luxury to create an aspirational setting that appeals to the senses. ‘My concept for Decorex Durban this year is based on my personal style of what I believe luxury living to be,’ he comments. Using a colour palette that induces a sense of calm and tranquility, he’ll combine tactile textures with high-end finishes and luxury fabrics. www.decorex.co.za
Reinventing
kitchen culture at Decorex Durban
Kitchens are the warm heart of a home, where most of our entertaining is planned – but kitchen design trends evolve rapidly, so be ready for some changes…
www.decorex.co.za
The days of keeping your guests out of the kitchen are past. A renaissance is afoot and, according to Decorex Africa’s Trend Report for 2020, it’s time to repurpose your kitchen as a multifunctional space, where cooking, entertaining, relaxation, reading and homework are all supported. This is the message delivered by Creative Director Anita Bloom, author of this authoritative report on décor, interior design and lifestyle trends, which gives us a teasing glimpse of what to expect from Decorex Durban 2020, where the overarching theme is ‘Lifestyle by Design’. Bloom, who ran her own design studio, Just Bloom Designs, before moving to Inspire Trade Expo for four years and then joining the Decorex Africa team, is uniquely positioned to identify and share shifting design and décor trends. She says the humble kitchen is evolving into part of an integrated living space, in which boundaries between rooms are blurring: “The trend is towards an open-floor arrangement, which creates fluid motion between different functional zones in this area of the home, so it’s possible to socialise while you cook, or serve dinner close to the stove.” Decorex Durban Show Journal 2020
9
Modern urban living means limited space and less time to create intimacy, so this new trend will allow you to spend more time with family and friends while whipping up some great new recipes. Meanwhile, the digitisation of work, and flexible working schedules, will see you happy to earn a living sitting at the kitchen table. Open shelving is making a comeback, so you can show off this newly inviting personal space – a far cry from the cool, closed-off, high-gloss designs of a few years ago. “Creating a warm, inviting atmosphere is what it’s all about – but less is more, so expect simple, streamlined design,” says Bloom. “Pantries remove the need for cluttered work surfaces, while durable and functional finishes and material choices dictate the new aesthetic.” Terrazzo and terracotta tiles are no longer reserved for patios – they gain greater decorative relevance indoors and can be used to make built-in shelves or countertops for where food is prepared. Trend Kitchen by Cosentino: workable solutions for kitchens A selection of these new trends will be showcased at Decorex Durban, which takes place from 19-22 March

2020 at the Durban Exhibition Centre. You’ll find them on show in the specially curated Trend Kitchen by Cosentino, presented in partnership with The Kitchen Depot. The ever-popular Trend Kitchen installation is an annual Decorex Africa fixture that showcases some of the emerging trends in kitchen design. The Decorex Durban space will feature products from Cosentino and is set to wow visitors with brand-new concepts from the Spanish family-owned company. Visitors can look forward to experiencing the kitchen as a multifunctional integrated space that incorporates living and dining areas. Expect to see the latest materials and innovations that showcase revolutionary technology from Cosentino brands such as Silestone and Dekton. “Cosentino aims to be in the forefront of trends and technology in the kitchen industry,” says Cosentino South Africa Regional Director, Neil Sterley. “We are very excited to display some of the amazing products that have come from the company over the past few years and also create some excitement about what is to come in the future!” The installation will feature a host of solutions in flooring, worktops, lighting and splashbacks and will

demonstrate best-practice use of space. Brandnew products, launched in situ, will give visitors a good idea of the appliances, materials, palettes and design elements that are set to trend in 2020. Also look out for tips and tricks on renovations and builds from Kitchen Specialists Association (KSA). According to Sian Cullingworth, who is the exhibition portfolio director for design, lifestyle and retail at Reed Exhibitions, the organisers of Decorex Africa: “Kitchens are no longer purely functional, practical spaces – they are multi-functional sanctuaries in which you can socialise, cook, serve meals, work and even study. Cosentino’s statement kitchens reimagine this intimate zone in the home and inspire you to create a space devoted to your personal wellbeing that is in line with the hottest global trends.” www.decorex.co.za

Try these five on-trend furnishing styles Read this before you settle on a home redecorating plan! Anita Bloom, Creative Director for Decorex Africa, unpacks some of the trends of 2020 and reveals how we can transform our living spaces this year.
1
Get back to nature with Contemporary Organic style
A major trend coming to our shores is the Contemporary Organic style, which uses natural materials alongside contemporary lines. We’ll opt for cosy, tactile spaces that reference natural elements – think wooden floors, burnt timber cladding, textured stone, feathers, indoor plants, even dried branches. “We’re moving away from sleek materials and sharp architectural lines as ultra-modern design adopts softer, more texturally rich touches: furniture with sensual forms or timber with an irregular grain,” says Bloom.
Get the look: Furniture made of unrefined natural materials will be popular – think rustic stools and seating sculptures – along with handcrafted rugs and fabrics. “Fireplaces are back and they bring flickering light and undeniable cosiness to living rooms, as do table lamps, candles and lanterns,” says Bloom. www.decorex.co.za

2 Make multifunctional furniture a focal point With the world ever more chaotic, many of us are living, working and playing in the cosy space in which we feel safest. Our homes will reflect this new, fluid lifestyle, where repurposed rooms mean a whole new approach to furnishings. An open-floor living arrangement between kitchen and lounge means we can socialise where we cook, as well as work or study at the kitchen table. Along with this trend comes multifunctional furniture design, which also suits if you’re considering downsizing your home.
Get the look: “Look for furniture items that provide you with options in a variety of spaces – like sofas with several accessories as part of their structure, which you can configure according to whether you want to work, relax, study, store objects or recharge electronic devices,” says Bloom. 14

3
Revel in texture and tactility
In a digital age, we’re crying out for more contact with the physically tangible. We loved Scandi design, but we’re ready to embrace a softer, more homely look. We’ll be celebrating form and texture in abundance, along with luxuriant forms of self-expression. When it comes to furniture, this means chubby, elephantine pieces that evoke a sense of comfort.
Get the look: Opt for rounder, organic shapes with a slightly retro look, like velvet armchairs or ottomans,” says Bloom. “Maximalist statements are in, along with charmingly awkward shapes, so don’t be afraid of bold statement items that express your personality.”

15
4 Look to the East for inspiration A mash-up of Scandinavian and Asian trends will be huge this year, like Japandi (a blend of Scandi and traditional Japanese details) and Wabi Sabi (the Japanese notion that imperfection is beautiful and life is impermanent). This hybrid design trend allows us to create uncluttered, function-driven spaces that are elegant and beautifully patterned, with rich tones adding warmth to a more neutral palette. Chinoiserie (a Western interpretation of Chinese motifs and techniques) is also making a comeback.
Get the look: “Look out for lacquered cabinets, oversized paper lamps and Chinoiserie wallpaper, along with items that celebrate good craftsmanship, a hallmark of the Japandi style and an antidote to throwaway culture, advises Bloom. 16

everything 5 Celebrate handmade Handcrafted items and textile arts are making a comeback – in part as a reaction against the ubiquity of technology, but also because they’re so homely and charming. Accompanying this trend is the move towards artisanal design – look out for bold abstracts and linear art on fabric, ceramics and stationery, as well as artworks featuring hand-painted lines, visible brushstrokes and energetic doodles. Making your mark is in!
Get the look: “Opt for pieces that show evidence of traditional woodworking methods, Vienna straw – a classic pattern for woven furniture that’s re-emerging this year – and handcrafted ceramics,” says Bloom. “Textile arts are likely to loom large in 2020. Look out for big, beautiful, tactile statement pieces for walls – they’ll make our living spaces that much warmer and more welcoming.”
