There’s always something changing, evolving and transforming in the world of design. Here’s what’s new in the realm of Decorex Africa.
SEVEN OF SOUTH AFRICA’S LEADING DESIGNER-MAKERS WERE TASKED WITH CREATING AN OBJECT OR PIECE OF FURNITURE THAT FULLY ENCAPSULATES THE THEMES OF SUSTAINABILITY, LONGEVITY AND QUALITY WITH THE AMERICAN HARDWOOD EXPORT COUNCIL (AHEC), DESIGNER COOPERATIVE ALWAYS WELCOME, MANUFACTURERS AND DESIGNERS HOUTLANDER AND TIMBER IMPORTERS BOS TIMBERS.
Future Heirlooms sets out with seven leading South African furniture and product designers, under the mentorship of the Always Welcome leadership team, to create an object or a piece of furniture that fully encapsulates the themes of sustainability, longevity and quality.
How do our objects help promote these themes in an increasingly fast-paced world?
How can we foster a sense of thoughtful, intentional, and holistic design in order to slow down excessive production, overcomplicated supply chains, mindless consumption and waste?
The participating designers for the inaugural Future Heirlooms project are Dokter and Misses, Kalki Studio, Joe Paine Studio, Mash T Design Studio, The Urbanative, Kumsuka Design and Node Design.
The designs created for this project are one-off functional objects or furniture pieces, suitable for indoor use, for domestic or public realms.

Future Heirlooms has been conceived as a means of demonstrating how considered design with a renewable and low carbon material – American red oak –can help us all to rethink our patterns of consumption.”
Wood is renewable and easily recycled. It can be used both as a material and a fuel; it is low impact and a carbon store. Strong for its weight, wood is also tactile, versatile and visually appealing, adding warmth to interiors and benefiting people’s health. With the world facing the ever-increasing impacts of climate change and of over-consumption of high-impact materials, the emphasis needs to shift to the environmental merits of making more use of what nature is growing.

With our design stable’s work expanding ever further into new, and often experimental manufacturing and material, we’re excited to embrace elements of their pioneering approach toward sustainability to push the local design vocabulary forward and continue their longstanding partnership with the South African design scene. We’re also extremely fortunate to have Houtlander bring the ambitious designs to life, without whom the knowledge and manufacturing needed to create these ambitious pieces would be impossible.”

Perfect happiness for me is living in a world where we are all equal in every aspect and every way possible.

Constant rush to do the next “thing”. I fear rushing myself to try to meet the high expectations I’m setting for myself.

I tend to over analyse the smallest of details and end up wasting a lot of my time and resources trying to make something perfect.
4. What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Lack of empathy!
5. Which living person do you most admire?
Truly admire people who are living their truth in fullness; people who take on life with a sense of ease, just living without affecting other people's way of life.
6. What is your greatest extravagance? I'm very frugal.
7. What is your current state of mind?
Trying to keep myself occupied with the idea of doing absolutely nothing for a few months. I’m exhausted but my spirit is alive.
8. What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Respect: the whole idea of “respect your elders” is sometimes just used to suppress the opinions of others, especially those that are younger. Sometimes it's just not as simple.
9. On what occasion do you lie?
Mostly when I’m late or when I just really want to stay in bed and not go anywhere then I just pretend to be sick.
10.What do you most dislike about your appearance?
For the longest time I did not like my weight. I was very skinny growing up and hated how deep my collarbones were.
11. Which living person do you most despise?
Kim Jong-un.
12. What is the quality you most like in a man?
I like a man to be assertive.
13. What is the quality you most like in a woman?
I also like a woman to be assertive.
14. What or who is the greatest love of your life?
My maternal grandmother, my truest love.

Definitely being able to play bass guitar.

I wish I was a little bit taller.

Surviving in this current climate, things are crazy and to remain sane and sound has to be the biggest flex.

I would definitely come back as Dave Chapelle.

Somewhere in the wilderness, surrounded by heaps of land with amazing 360 views.

Definitely self doubt and self pity.

I am extremely sensitive and hyper-emotional. The smallest things can make me cry but I can also mask my emotions around people that don’t really know me and cry when I get home because I was extremely overwhelmed.

The ability to calm me down and also tell me the hard truth when I need to hear it.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN DESIGN INDUSTRY IS AT AN EXCITING POINT IN ITS EVOLUTION. EVERY YEAR A NEW CROP OF NAMES EMERGES TO SHOW THEIR TALENTS TO THE WORLD AS LOCAL DESIGN IS INCREASINGLY SPOTLIGHTED ON THE GLOBAL STAGE. THE NANDO'S HOT YOUNG DESIGNER TALENT SEARCH (HYD) PLAYS A KEY ROLE IN THIS ONGOING INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT BY FUNCTIONING AS LAUNCHING PAD FOR FRESH YOUNG TALENT.
Now in its fourth iteration, HYD aims to unearth saucy new designs for Nando’s restaurants around the world, and fire up the careers of emerging local creatives. The popular competition, which is facilitated by Clout/SA, has just announced its much-awaited list of 10 finalists for 2022.
HYD tasked young designers with conceptualising a condiment unit to display the brand’s acclaimed Peri Peri sauces. The challenge was to do so in such a way that these sauces and their piquant ingredients, which form an intrinsic part of the Nando’s experience, remain visible and accessible to customers throughout their visit. The competition received 134 entries from across the country, making the judging process a tough call for the adjudication panel.
The finalists were chosen by a prestigious panel of local and global industry judges including Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in New York, Ngaire Blankenberg; Sophie Douglas, Director of Fusion Design and Architecture, UK; Paul Thrush, Co-Founder and Director of STAC Architecture, UK; and Karen Brumfield, Head of Buying at @home. All 17 judges are:

The judging took place during August and September 2022 and was segmented into two phases. In the first phase, a shortlist of 20 entries was created from the initial submissions. Members of the Nando’s and Clout/SA global partners voted on the shortlist inclusions using a set of criteria mapped to the entry requirements. This shortlist was then put before the entire judging panel, which used the same set of criteria to vote for the 10 finalists.

Many of these designs go on to become best-sellers on the Nando’s Portal to Africa, driving revenue to the designers’ start-up businesses, and helping grow this exciting sector through inclusive access to opportunities and a global market. This is about changing lives by making sure we utilise the platform we have to shine a light on creativity and opportunity!
CROSSPOLYNATIONS IS AN ARTISANAL TEXTILE STUDIO BASED IN CAPE TOWN, SPECIALISING IN HANDWOVEN, SMALL BATCH AND ONE OF A KIND FUNCTIONAL ART TEXTILES.
Cloth is a medium which is fundamental to human experience, both deeply ancient and intimate. It is from cloth which we emerge each morning, wrap our bodies in, fill our homes with and eventually retreat back to for rest. For centuries, cloth has provided shelter, clothing, an expression of identity and the ultimate metaphor for interconnection.
Originally conceived as a platform to celebrate traditional textile practices and producers, the research inspired me to take up the craft myself and quickly saw Crosspolynations evolve into a hand weaving studio. The practice was founded on desire to craft cloth which embodies a deep sense of connection, in celebration of traditional craft practices and the humble beauty of local, natural fibres. My approach to the design process is guided by this love of the craft and a curiosity towards material & process.
In my exploration of traditional textile practices, I was struck by how certain patterns, motifs and designs stood out through out the ages, ancient forms which speak directly to contemporary sensibility. Through researching the rich legacy of the craft, the notion of timelessness emerged as a fundamental design principle and has become a primary guide in my design process. When approaching design I look first to ancient textiles for inspiration. By isolating certain motifs, structures or forms which have appeared throughout the centuries I attempt to harness the power of time honoured forms, reinterpreting them in a minimal language which speaks to contemporary style. By doing this I hope to design for longevity, crafting future heirlooms which will remain relevant by tapping into a sense of timelessness strengthened by their connection to history.
Historically, textiles have always had a direct connection to place, using what the earth provides as raw material. In honouring the honest sustainability of this practice, I try as far as possible to use only natural and locally sourced materials. Rather than feeling restricted by the limitations of this supply chain, these parameters inform the process of designing and creating cloth which is in direct connection to our environment and accentuates the simple, honest beauty of natural materials.
Hand weaving is an undeniably slow process in which material is transformed through intentional, repetitive action. I like to think of cloth as an archive of the practice itself, recorded through subtle variation. As the cloth is woven conversation develops between the material and the weaver; a period of flow followed by an interruption, the advance of the warp, the changing of a bobbin, the drop of a shuttle, a broken thread. Rather than attempting to conceal these events, I choose to use them as design queues, as invitations to be an active participant, present in the process.
The repeat of a pattern or detail inlaid becomes an act of response rather than predetermination. The cloth results as a unique expression of experience, of deep connection to process.
In developing this practice I aspire to contribute valuable and useful work, by not only refining my craft, but by producing good design. Two guildelines for good design have emerged through this practice. Firstly, it must be resource efficient. This means taking into consideration not only the raw materials and the production process, but also how the product is consumed and disposed of. In my practice I address this guideline by using natural fibres which are the products of agricultural rather than petrochemical industry and are biodegradable when their time come and by looking to ‘timeless’ forms in an attempt to design for longevity. Secondly, good design must be functional.
In physical terms, textiles are functional objects which serve as shelter, but beyond that, I believe the beauty of hand crafted textiles lies in their symbolic function as a connection to history, the environment and ones intimate, personal needs.
Crosspolynations is driven by a desire to engage authentically with the legacy of craft and approach material & process with honesty, aiming to craft both connection and cloth which serves as a source of joy, beauty and comfort.

NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) fall into this space right now. Even though the first one was created in around 2014, they only properly entered mainstream consciousness in 2020. The idea of owning digital assets had been simmering for a while already, but this three letter initialism seems to have been the mass tipping point – especially now that it is being applied to virtual property.
Stepping back for a minute, it’s useful to define what NFTs actually are as a start. They’re essentially digital assets, stored on the blockchain. The “Non-fungible” part means that each one is unique and not interchangeable. So while they have value, they are not in themselves currency (like cryptocurrencies). As for the “Token” part, that can be an image, piece of audio or a video, but whatever form it takes, it is always tied to the identifier that can be bought and traded online. Physical objects like artworks can also be sold linked to an NFT too, however, but it’s the digital token itself that has value.
If you’re feeling like you’ve been sat alongside to the wrong person at a dinner party, and the conversation for next three courses is going to be all about crypto exchanges, don’t worry. That’s where the technical discussion ends. Basically all you need to know is that an NFT is a digital asset, there’s only one of each, and currently people are spending money on them.
A lot of money in fact. Something to the tune of $24.9 billion by some reckoning. The reason they become interesting in the world of design is because of another big trend topic at the moment: the metaverse. The definition here gets a little woollier, but as a catch-all term it’s basically the digital version(s) of our physical reality. We’re increasingly needing to engage, transact and experience life online, so a way of owning things becomes necessary. For art, design, and now even real-estate, this is where NFTs come in.
Over the last year or so, NFT real estate has become a hot topic. In this case the NFT itself is the title deed, and the artefact is the digital ‘place’. There are a range of different platforms you can choose from, like Minecraft, Roblox and Decentraland, and like any other development they’re usually broken up to a set number of plots, each of which is tied to an NFT.
And that’s where the first caveat comes in. There’s no one single neighbourhood. There are a whole country of boomtowns, so you’re not only investing in the online vs the physical, but the platform it’s on too.
As an aside to all this – an even newer trend in this space also worth noting is the sale of real world houses tied to digital tokens. In this case the NFT marketplace simply becomes the platform to list and purchase property with cryptocurrencies. The actual registration and transfer does, for now, still need to go through a traditional deeds office as before. It’s not quite as sexy as a CGI home, and it may annoy some purists because it’s difficult to separate physical and virtual value, but this could open up the property market in a whole new way. But back to the digital homes…
The fact of the matter is that NFT property seems to be a growth industry. There are metaverse real estate agents, investment funds and even starchitects like Zaha Hadid’s firm are getting on board.
Much of the public interest comes from concept art and digital renders because it fits with our vision of a Matrix-like future. Designer Krista Kim was widely covered last year for what was pegged as the first sale of an NFT home (and for over $500,000 at that). And the truth is that designing digitally does open up a host of possibilities. If you don’t have to follow the laws of physics, you can create incredible spaces that would be impossible to execute in reality. Plenty of architects get frustrated by practicality slowly diluting their concepts, so this allows for building in a perfect world.
This all being said, it’s important to distinguish between an NFT that takes the form of a virtual building and one that stakes a claim to digital property. They’re both asset ownership at the end of the day, but it’s the difference between owning an original Frank Lloyd Wright sketch and living in one of his homes. Speculative visualisations are beautiful and fantastic.

NFTs are ultimately about ownership, not design. Their value lies in the record on the blockchain – the virtual villa or picture of a disaffected monkey is only the representation of it. Not that investment-level art and property is much different. When you’re purchasing a home in an upmarket neighbourhood, you’re not buying the bricks and plaster or the layout, you’re buying the address. NFTs cut to the chase and say the quiet part out loud.
So, NFTs are potentially more interesting as a way to talk about our relationship with design than being a specific aesthetic to bank on.

Creative industries don’t often step back and take stock. It’s not in their nature. When design is constantly evolving, and the needs of clients and customers are constantly changing, there’s seldom even an opportunity. With this report, we wanted to pause for a minute and get a snapshot of the point in time we find ourselves in. We’ve spoken to professionals across the decor, design and interiors worlds in Southern Africa to get a picture of where the industry is at right now. Through these conversations we’ve been able to survey the bigger trends impacting this space, and also identify some key opportunities for the future. Our hope is that all creative professionals can take something from this report – whether you find it inspiring, sobering, or just validating to hear you’re not alone in your experiences.
No profession operates in a vacuum. Macro global trends filter down to every industry and country, it’s simply a question of when. These are some of the bigger shifts at play, impacting not just the decor, design and interiors space, but life more generally too.
It feels like we’ve been living in a climate crisis forever, and still there seems to be no clear way out of it. In the face of institutional inaction, the growing trend is towards individuals taking their own initiative to reduce their personal impact and ensure they are a net positive to the world. This opens up discussions around sustainable materials and systems, and is one of the key areas in which design can unlock new possibilities.

Unsurprisingly, the design industry is being impacted by larger trends in business, and there’s a clear shift away from in-person engagement across the board. Professionals are seeing fewer face to face consultations, fewer showroom visits, and an emphasis on communication via digital channels. While there’s a sense that this adds to efficiency, it’s becoming more difficult for makers and designers to build relationships – less contact time means you’re less likely to be top of mind when it matters. That doesn’t mean the end of the physical space, however. Some professionals report seeing a renewed focus on showrooms, but in a more focused way than just having one for the sake of appearances.
Globally, we’re living through an era of uncertainty, and in South Africa the trend toward self-reliance is particularly appropriate. The respondents reported that there’s increasingly a combination of form, function and future shaping briefs – incorporating considerations like loadshedding-proof designs, for example. The challenge that’s coming up now is how to incorporate these in a designforward way.
At a high level, many professionals pointed to the increasing influence of sustainability on their business. This is a much longer-term trend, and one that’s only been growing over the years. Some key focus areas right now include recycled materials, as well as local production to reduce carbon footprint. One common frustration is the difficulty of finding cost-effective and sustainable solutions in the South African market, but professionals report that this is changing rapidly as client demand increases.
This is the state of our industry, and no one can shape its future but us.

A CURATED SECTION OF TRANSPARENT DESIGN OBJECTS EXPLORES SOME OF THE MOST PRESSING ISSUES FACING THE DESIGN INDUSTRY.
LET’S BE CLEAR: This is a punning provocation, not a design manifesto. Many of the most pressing questions facing designers and the design industry at the moment crystallise around the idea of transparency. They have to do, broadly speaking, with the ethics of design and manufacture: sustainability, inclusivity, diversity, responsibility. These are all issues that the people who use design, buy design and make design are asking about at the moment. Are your materials sustainably and ethically sourced? What’s your carbon footprint? What are you doing about diversity and inclusivity? How do you make sure your design products do no harm to people and planet?
Critical awareness of all the invisible, behind-the-scenes elements of design and manufacture is growing, and consumers and industries alike have ethical expectations. To be found to be wanting on any of these concerns is one thing. To be found ignorant, obstructive or indifferent is another. And worst of all is to be found to be deliberately dishonest.
One way in which people can take responsibility for people and planet is by carefully choosing what they buy and use. To choose well, they need information. If they can’t get it, they won’t commit. If a brand deceives a customer, not only are they made to feel foolish, which they’ll resent it, but they’ll be angered by the fact that they have been caught out lying to themselves and others, and they’re unlikely ever to forgive a brand for that.
Apart from actually being ethical, sustainable and responsible, designers have to be open about all aspects of their designs, and to make information accessible. That means having detailed knowledge about the ramifications of their own designs. And they need to be willing and able to share it.
The difficulty, however, is that much of this information is difficult to ascertain. Not all manufacturers are even able to divulge the information designers and consumers might need and want. What chemicals, precisely, go into your paint? And where does it come from? Some industries are better than others – with certifications and standards – but it’s not easy to cover all aspects of the design and manufacture process. And it’s not always affordable to choose the sustainable or ethical option. In fact, pursuing all these ideals might simply stop many design endeavours from being viable at all.
There is little doubt that the design industry (like most others) needs to transform, but we certainly don’t want it to destroy itself in the process. At the same time, both consumers and the industry itself have to acknowledge that this kind of transformation doesn’t happen overnight. The design industry is not perfect, but it is not always deliberately and wilfully imperfect.
For the most part, designers aim to make the world a better place, to improve people’s lives and experiences, to solve problems and create beauty. They always have. It is, except perhaps for those designers making deliberately addictive apps, a well-intentioned industry.
The solutions to the challenges facing the design world, however, are seldom as simple as replacing one component or material with another, simply switching suppliers or making a quick design update. And to be honest, many of the solutions they need don’t even exist yet. We’re on shifting ground, and designers themselves, at all stages and in all facets of the industry, need to design the solutions.
Thus, we begin with a provocation. Radical Transparency takes the literal quality of transparency to explore, expand and tease out a range of questions facing designers, starting with the figurative idea of transparency.
Some of the best local (and a few international) designers, crafters, makers and artists working in glass and other transparent media explore the possibilities of recycling, heritage, innovation, collaboration, transformation and more. It’s about submitting to scrutiny, shining a light on the workings of the industry, reflection and self-examination. And all with more than a touch of beauty and delight.
Radical Transparency is the beginning of a conversation, an installation intended to provoke thought, invite engagement and spark ideas. It’s a simultaneously playful and serious attempt to engage honestly with the major questions facing the design industry.

Surreal, eerie and pastiche designs are forecasted to gain momentum, Phantasmagoria, as a means of finding escapism and uncommon beauty in dark times. Exuberant styles bring joy to the everyday and tap into consumers’ need for optimism.
Consumers are embracing personal style and expressing themselves through interiors, bringing joy and positivity into living spaces. Ranging from loud and daring maximalism to smaller doses of quirkiness, consumers are looking to spark joy through interiors.
In the wake of the pandemic, a growing consensus is emerging that the current system is failing people and planet. Economic and social inequality is widening, driving unrest. Meanwhile, human impacts have led us to a climate emergency and a biodiversity crisis.
Regenerative means able to or tending to regenerate—to regrow or be renewed or restored, especially after being damaged or lost. The act or process of regenerating is regeneration.
Social and environmental justice are inextricably intertwined. To be truly sustainable, brands and businesses must adopt an intersectional approach, tackling systemic inequities alongside the climate crisis.
At its most basic level, the metaverse is an extension of our lives enhanced by technology. Currently, it exists as a series of distinct virtual worlds and experiences, in the future, however, the metaverse will expand into an interconnected and limitless world where our digital and physical lives fully converge. As consumers move in and out of virtual worlds more seamlessly, digital assets will become as important as physical products.
Expect more immersive experiences as AR and VR technology continues to develop, push forward, and become more mainstream.
Co-Office and co-working spaces will level up to lure people back in. The physical workspace is becoming less about productivity and more about the human interaction that drives retention. Workspaces must provide meaningful experiences to meet the needs of their employees, so they’re taking cues from hospitality.
There’s a move towards the use of organic, sustainable materials like bamboo, cork, and wood. We’ve renewed our appreciation for their anti-bacterial benefits and their organic characteristics that connects us to nature.
Flexible leases in co-living and co-working spaces are driving a new way of living, making a lowcommitment lifestyle, with added benefits, accessible.
Waste is becoming a valued resource. Innovations in upcycled materials are delivering beautiful new aesthetics and product opportunities that will continue to be of interest as sustainability remains top of mind.

As our design industries continue to develop, emphasis needs to shift towards local identity, rather than continuing to reference the African continent as a homogeneous whole. We need to challenge narrow expectations of what African design can and should look like, and create systems and opportunities for innovation.

USURPA’s gallery, currently being constructed, is the first of its kind in Africa. A showcase of the works combined with the theatre of the Artists working on this new Medium. The Johannesburg Gallery will be replicated by creating DIGITAL ART LABS throughout Africa.
Digital Art allows for a very rich and immersive experience that combines the virtues of static art, animation and 3D modelling. Their curatorial team has already been part of unearthing this potential and for the Investec Cape Town Art Fair was able to unveil works that were not just exceptional in the African context but at a word class level.

THE WAY WE PRACTISE DESIGN IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHAPE THE WORLD WE LIVE IN. HOW DO WE DESIGN FOR THE MANY, WITHOUT DECIMATING THE PLANET? HOW DO WE DESIGN NEW BEHAVIOURS, INSTEAD OF NEW PRODUCTS? HOW CAN DESIGN UNLOCK GOOD BUSINESS? THESE WERE SOME OF THE QUESTIONS POSED AT DECOREX AFRICA’S NEW SUMMIT.
As the global economy begins to recover, emissions are expected to return to even higher levels, further accelerating the climate crisis. Coupled with rising inequality, as well as a few other toxic forces at play, now more than ever we need to reimagine the intricate relationships between humans, technology, and the planet. It’s our responsibility to think seriously about the ethics of design.
As a marketplace for world-class products, designers, brands and ideas, Decorex Africa has long traded in inspiration. This year, the platform took this one step further, with the launch of the design Summits in both Cape Town and Joburg. Hosted over one day in each city, the Summits featured a lineup of thinkers, doers and dreamers who were invited to share their perspectives on how we can reimagine the world as we know it.
The keynote speaker for the Joburg edition was Elsa Dagný Ásgeirsdóttir, the Lead Creative Producer at Space10, Ikea’s independent research and design lab whose mission is ‘to create a better everyday life for people and the planet’. In Elsa’s lecture, Beyond HumanCentered Design, she explained that “design that is not good for our planet, is ultimately not good for people. We need to look beyond the narrow horizon of human-centered design, and start designing in a way that meets the needs of the many without going beyond the limits of our planet.”
In her talk, she discussed Space10’s approach and its projects. Much of the research covered came from the Space10 Mexico City Pop-Up, which was conducted in early 2022. This was designed as an opportunity for the local creative community to exchange perspectives and solutions. The pop-up was guided by an ambitious question: What constitutes good design in our day and age? These are 10 powerful takeaways from the various workshops (first published by Space10.)
Good design can shape the ideal world: a world where the needs of natural ecosystems and human communities are not in competition with the interests of businesses. A world where systems respond to context.

Gather interdisciplinary teams — from biologists to anthropologists — to enable broader and deeper expert understandings of how design can impact people and the planet for the better. Design collaboratively for collective flourishing.

Look beyond the function and aesthetics of a product to take responsibility for the entire system. You need to factor in how materials are sourced, how an object is produced, its distribution, its use, and how easily it can be recycled or re-enter the biosphere. A considered system can generate positive impact by creating jobs, shorter material flows and shared value. Good design is the sum of the decisions made in the process of creating a system.
This means designing with respect for nature and everything that sits within it. We need to observe and learn from the natural ecosystems we depend upon, so design can be a force for restoring air, water, and soil — instead of degrading it. Good design can create the conditions that enable people to give back more than we take.
Every design decision is political. Good design can empower communities, create momentum for climate action, and cultivate a more hopeful tomorrow. Designers today can be stewards of conditions that enable future generations to flourish. Good design is actively part of the solution.
If we connect with an object, it will make us happy and we’ll hold onto it. That’s why engaging with emotions through design is good for people as well as the planet. Longevity and relevance yield emotional capital that grows even stronger over time. But needs change, so good design preempts ways to adapt to enable emotional sustainability.
Good design is about finding the relevant problems to solve. What is good for people, is also good for business. Focus on solutions that improve everyday life, communities and our ecosystems, rather than perceiving people as consumers with endless desires. We should connect to our real needs.
Good design acts on behalf of many people, solves real challenges, and serves the common good. This means design should be inclusive, affordable and accessible. The creative challenge for designers not only lies in designing a product, service or experience, but in designing the business model, production system or supply chain around it that enables the solution to become truly accessible and democratic for the many people who need it.
A designer is a mediator, translating the needs and dreams of the many into meaningful solutions. Being onground with people is where real insights happen. Engage a plurality of people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and income levels to meet the needs of all people who might wish to use a solution. That benefits everyone, including business.
What we understand as good design is constantly in flux. ‘Good design’ is a design project in itself. And we should revisit the definition regularly and routinely. How we educate on design and talk about design will change — and likely rapidly. New fields, directions and iterations are emerging. Embrace the complexity. Let’s keep designing design.

While these external trends are important in interior design, there is a behavioural component to our work that we cannot ignore. This means examining what people want and why? People become our insight and inspiration. Their story matters.
In Kim Williams’ experience when we understand who people are, what they’re about, who’s sharing their lives, what they like and don’t like, their values etc, the more we understand what they need in, and from, their interior spaces, the more effective the design. It is about creating meaningful and intelligent interior design, and having the ability to simplify complexity in any space.
The world is changing, trends come and go, new movements begin; our realities and experiences are influenced by this fluidity, as well as disruption, as the ebb and flow of life around us evolves. As interior designers our thinking is always about how spaces can be improved, changed, and elevated.

Kim thinks designers must think about these things more fundamentally. A big event like Covid-19 radically transformed how we live and work. This was easy to take note of and respond to because it was a big event, but there is also much happening around us every day. If you look more closely these small events impact us just as much, but over a longer time. Daily decision-making will create small changes which eventually culminates in bigger changes. For every change there is another change. Understanding these changes creates opportunities for us to design more effectively and with more impact.
There is so much information we receive daily. We have colour experts, fabric experts, lifestyle experts, property experts, brand experts - these talented people are constantly sharing their observations and knowledge. We need to be able to extract relevant information from all this intelligence to enable us to design relevantly and uniquely.
Clients employ interior designers to make brands come alive, improve their working lives and environment, help them recharge, come together, and find time alone. To do this well and properly to micro shift people and experiences to create a big impact, we need to fundamentally do three things:
1. Understand the story: Design is about making someone’s story come alive.
2. Understand the purpose: What is the purpose of that space.
3. Understand ‘the what’ - Once you understand the purpose of the space it enables you to define the “what”.

They successfully completed thousands of high end projects, both locally and across the borders. They progressed to the extent that they were the preferred supplier and service provider to many top interior designers and decorators in KZN. Some of the designers that outsourced to Design Time included the likes of: Farenheit design, Re-design interiors, Michelle Throssel interiors, Couch interiors, to name but a few. Their work has been featured on several occasions on Top Billing and other publications. Design Time had an affiliation to Decorex as they exhibited over a dozen times.
Design Time closed its doors since 2018 in order to fully focus on River Fabrics.
Launching their beautiful new range of fabrics at a prestigious event at Always Welcome in Kramerville last month, proved to be a night of inspiration and collaboration as they showcased their curated display of new colours and prints of fabrics exclusive to River Fabrics. They featured their innovative and collaborative work they are doing together with Design Bank of unique designs and patterns printed on their quality fabrics.
River Fabrics – a is legacy that continues to influence the design industry with innovation. They give tribute to their humble beginnings with this message “Our Dad constantly reminds us, and has ingrained in our hearts and minds, words like, “if you ain’t the lead dog, the scenery never changes” or “the difference between ordinary and extraordinary, is just that something extra”. Interiors evoke an emotional connection to each individual as per their idea of luxury, may it be opulence, an understated luxury or an emphasis on refinement. Frans believe that the key to each successful interior lies in the detail. This is where many don’t invest and its critical to ensure a wellexecuted space. The small details are the result of an emotion that is born from carefully selected materials and finishes.
One of Frans' favorite projects was the epitome of his style and for this reason when Top Billing approached him, he did not hesitate to feature the Polokwane Villa.
The challenge with any project is for the client to handover and trust the designer. Its every designers obligation to ensure that this trust is established to achieve the desired outcome when it comes to building this relationship with the client.
Tip: Because clients are not buying furniture every year they are often out of touch with the cost of items. Frans recommends future clients do some homework to inform themselves with the expected costs and ensuring to compare apples with apples when establishing a budget for the intended space - add 20% for custom furniture and fees.
The interiors that have been most successful are those where the clients handed the project over and had complete faith in Frans to do what he does best. These projects did not only have an incredible outcome but the client also enjoyed the process and reveal.
The rewards is then always joie de vivre!
