elcome to your Spring 2014 brochure for Déda’s programme of classes, performances and exhibitions. We’re delighted to be able to share some artist impressions of the new dance studio and atrium which we’ll begin working on this year with independent architectural and engineering partnership Pick Everard. The new space will enable Déda to move boldly into the future and an exciting relationship with the University of Derby (see p.21 for more). As well as the new dance studio, our theatre will be developed to create stage
wings, new flooring and seating – all to be completed and ready to go in September 2014. Our refurbishment project would be impossible without the on-going support of Arts Council England, Derby City Council and the hugely generous grants from the Garfield Weston Foundation, Foyle Foundation and Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation. Our theatre will close in May when we officially go on site. But before then we have a packed season of classes, performances and events for you. The class programme continues to be amazingly popular, especially our social dancing classes. Because of this we’ve created Improver-level classes for both Tango and Rock ’n’ Roll & Swing Jive – so if you’re ready to take your dancing to the next level, see page 9. The Performance programme is as packed as ever with some stellar shows in the Déda Theatre. First we have provocative dance theatre from State of Emergency with Love&Sex, followed by Dan Canham and 2

Ours Was the Fen Country, an evocative dance piece which celebrates a disappearing rural community. We are proud to present an international flavour to the programme through T42 from Switzerland, the incredible Stopgap, an intrepid new work from Probe, JV2 the new group of young international dancers handpicked by Jasmin Vardimon, and one of the hits of Derby Festé 2013, C12. With our popular shows for families and regular events in the CUBE, that’s a lot to squeeze in before we close the Déda Theatre in May. We’ll be publishing a full list of classes which will be continuing up to our traditional summer break. And our new website has all the details going forward, plus regular updates on our progress. Change is in the air at Déda, promising a better, bigger and brighter cultural venue for Derby.
Stephen Munn Director
A gift to inspire – Providing the opportunity for children in care to experience live performance, film and workshops in Derby. Major arts and cultural organisations in Derby have joined forces with Barnardo’s to give children in care the chance to experience live performance, film and workshops in the city. Plus One aims to inspire young people and spark an on-going interest in the arts and the cultural scene in Derby. For some young people, it will be the first time they experience opportunities of this kind with their foster family or carers. When booking tickets at either Derby Theatre, Déda, Sinfonia Viva, QUAD or Derby LIVE you will be given the opportunity to contribute to the Plus One scheme. We are working closely with Barnardo’s and other expert partners to ensure that the donated tickets are given to children in care and their carers, whether they are fostered or in children’s homes, in Derbyshire and Derby city. Every ticket donated through the scheme will go directly to these beneficiaries. 3

Ours Was the Fen Country
Latin Fusion
Presented by Still House & Dan Canham
Presented by Absolute Salsa
For the past two years Dan Canham has been capturing conversations with people of the fens in East Anglia. In this ethereal piece of documentary dance-theatre, Dan and his team fuse movement and sound with words and memories to get to the heart of the fens – a beautiful, bleak and mysterious expanse of flat land. Ours Was the Fen Country is a celebration of the universal stories of rural communities which are fading from view. At Déda, we aim to support emerging companies but understand the risk new work poses for audiences. We invite you to see this professional performance and ask you to pay what you can afterwards.
Join us for a spicy social evening of Latin dance hosted by Absolute Salsa, the East Midlands biggest Salsa promoter. The perfect complement to weekly Salsa and Tango classes at Déda, our Latin Fusion night is an opportunity to practice your moves, show off your skills and dance the night away. The evening is hosted by Lee Hunter, UKA (voted top UK teacher) and the Absolute Salsa Team. The evening kicks off with fun 45-minute classes for everyone from complete beginners to intermediates. Then dance the night away in the theatre, CUBE and studio.

Tour D’Horizon
Artificial Things
Presented by T42 Dance Company
Presented by Stopgap Dance Company
Award-winning and internationally acclaimed dance theatre company T42 takes you on a journey through loneliness, boredom, illusion and hope with their beautiful and humorous choreography. Tour D’Horizon is the fascinating story of one man living in isolation for decades off the coast of Brittany and the strange fate that befell him. Two fishermen, a woman and a goldfish all move in those grey areas between memory, imagination and reality. Joining T42 on stage in a curtain raiser are local Dance Artists and students who have worked intensively with the company over a three-day residency.
Slowly suffocating in each other’s company, a group of individuals seek escape in a bash of riotous rock-n-roll. However, their wild disorder descends into playground politics and reveals some uncomfortable truths. In this cinematic and evocative production, Stopgap Dance Company creates a compact world of riddles that question our notions about unity and co-existence. Artificial Things sees dancer David Toole from DV8’s award winning film Cost of Living return to the Déda stage along with Laura Jones, Chris Pavia, David Willdridge and Amy Butler. This production is supported by Arts Council England, Farnham Maltings, Pavilion Dance South West, The Point, University of Surrey and Zinc Arts.

Running on Empty
Triple Bill
Presented by Probe
Presented by JV2
Running On Empty is the story of Man, Woman and their repeated collision over time, travelling through dreams, fears and memory. Absurd and sometimes devastating, it moves between the epic and the intimate, exploring our resilience to loss, our struggle for a future and the emptiness we overcome to survive. Artistic Director Antonia Grove brings together an extraordinary team of creative collaborators as dance, text and song combine in this intrepid new work from Probe.
Award-winning dance theatre pioneers Jasmin Vardimon Company return with JV2, an initiative which nurtures young talent and engages with young audiences. Presenting a vibrant group of eleven international dancers, hand-picked by Artistic Director Jasmin Vardimon and course leader Tim Casson, this triple bill promises a thrilling mix of inventive choreography and impressive talent. Former JVC dancers Paul Blackman and Christine Gouzelis create beautifully intricate work with an alluring visual style. Current JVC dancer David Lloyd's new piece delivers daring and highly physical choreography, while Jasmin Vardimon revives her work Tomorrow, transforming favourite moments from her celebrated repertoire into a new experience.

DÉDA GALLERY
Kevin Ryan’s exhibition features images from an archive of over 50,000 photographs, taken in the UK and internationally, based on aspects of performance, from the individual performer to large scale spectacle and people caught up in the moment at events. These 100 or so pictures have been selected from images of performances taken in the UK, Canada, America, Ecuador, China, Taiwan, Italy, India, Kosovo, Holland and Palestine.
Carol Pairaudeau’s practice is founded on a personal response to landscape. Each painting reflects a specific time and place, a moment when a particular aspect of her surroundings became worthy of special attention. The images reflect both the visual and emotional elements of the experience through use of colour, composition and the choice of mark. www.carolartgallery.com

Nicki Dennett Amid The Hills
Maria Falconer Dancing With Light
Nicki Dennett’s main areas of focus are an investigation into the limits of printmaking and the drawing and filling of sketchbooks in order to catalogue the world around her. The inspiration for her Déda exhibition comes from a love of walking in the Peak District and the surrounding towns and villages. Many of the prints are built using a lengthy process of building up layers using a range of different techniques including solar etchings, collagraphs, monoprints and stencils. Also on show for this exhibition are a series of images created by the process of blind embossing. www.nickidennett.co.uk
A Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and a graduate of the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Maria Falconer combines her two passions with this fusion of dance imagery. Maria works with choreographers and dance / physical theatre companies to create promotional images, as well as documenting the choreographic process during rehearsals. This exhibition contains images from a range of dance styles, including works from Scottish Dance Theatre and SmallPetitKlein, alongside publicity shots Maria produced for Déda Producing’s Elemental Force at Chatsworth House in 2012. www.mariafalconer.co.uk
