NOW BIG, BEAUTIFUL DESIGN ALSO HAS A BIG, BEAUTIFUL

In 2019, the way we see our homes will come from within: our need to reconnect, re-energize, feel safe and secure is a natural part of the design decision. Isn’t that comforting?

Bold, bright, and it really connects. Pantone Colour of the Year: Living Coral “In a time when so many of us are increasingly immersed in digital experiences that can be cold and isolating, Living Coral felt like an appealing shade of connection. There’s just something about the color that feels earthbound and welcoming, optimistic and intimate. Leatrice Eiseman, Exec. Director, Pantone Color Institute, in ELLE DECOR

Sustainable. Affordable. Gorgeous. Cork, bamboo, reclaimed wood and engineered wood ŴRRULQJ PDGH IURP UHF\FOHG PDWHULDOV DUH JRRG IRU SODQHW earth, and now they are a bit more affordable, too. Wanna dance?

Smart Home for the soul?

Between the sheets.

Yes! Smart Home thermostats, window coverings and lights make things calm and comfortable. They save energy, make homes safer, and life in general just a little bit easier. Get with the program, just ask for a little help from a pro!

Softer, sweeter, stonewashed bedding in natural linen needs no further explanation. Splurge. Then nestle in and enjoy for years to come. YOLO.

Blinds are a natural. “All kinds of blinds. There’s an abundance of great trends and many carry over into draperies as well. Nature-inspired choices and eco-friendly alternatives are very popular: bamboos, natural weaves and botanical prints.” Photo courtesy Parachute Advertisement

Colour. It has the power to transform a space like nothing else. Take wall paint, for example. Even the subtlest undertone can affect a room’s atmosphere (warm creates coziness; cool is refreshing). Furnishings and accessories, too, hold massive tonal potential. Even a potted plant can skew a scheme! Want to learn how to wield this darling of the decorator’s tool kit? This issue is packed with inspiration. Mint flaunts its flirtiest self in a sweet bathroom Tanya McLean designed for two young sisters in Vancouver (“Pastel Paradise,” page 50), while blue, yellow and pink show off their playful sides in three stylish children’s bedrooms (“Kids at Heart,” page 55). But colour isn’t just for little ones – far from it. In “Character Building” (page 44), communications specialist Hilary Smyth uses dusty shades to lend her Toronto rental a sophisticated historical air; in “A Fine Balance” (page 86), designer Katie Scott energizes a Florida beach house with juicy jolts. For a muted approach, check out “Nature as Muse” (page 72), in which designer Cynthia Zamaria remodels a Keene, Ont., farmhouse and infuses it with tawny wood tones. And Karla Dreyer gives her parents’ Surrey, B.C., home a dramatic makeover using texture rather than tone in “Decor Do Over” (page 64). Of course, our Style News, High or Low and Spotlight columns are also full of colourful products to crave. Saturated or subdued, loaded-on or less-is-more, monotone or multi-hued – whatever your colour code, the following pages have something for you.

INGREDIENTS SERVES 6 TO 8

6 2 2 2 1 2 4 â…“ 2

hot cross buns tbsp unsalted butter, melted cups 2% milk cups 35% whipping cream vanilla bean tbsp orange marmalade large eggs cup granulated sugar tbsp icing sugar, for serving

DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 350°F. Cut the hot cross buns into 1-inch cubes and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Drizzle the melted butter onto the cubes. Bake until lightly golden, about 10 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and allow the bread cubes to cool slightly, then place them in a shallow medium-sized baking dish; set aside. In a large saucepan, heat the milk and the cream over medium heat. Cut the vanilla bean in half lengthwise and scrape the seeds from the pod with the tip of the knife. Stir the seeds and the pod into the milk mixture. Scald the milk mixture, bringing it just under a boil, then remove from the heat and let the mixture sit to infuse for 10 minutes. Stir in the orange marmalade. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and the granulated sugar until well combined. Remove and discard the vanilla pod from the milk mixture. Slowly pour the milk mixture into the egg mixture; whisk to combine. Pour the liquid through a sieve over the bread cubes and let soak for about 10 minutes. Place the baking dish in a large roasting pan and slowly pour enough hot water into the base of the roasting pan to cover halfway up the sides of the baking dish. (Be sure not to pour water into the baking dish.) Bake until just set, 30 to 35 minutes. Remove the baking dish from the water bath and allow to cool slightly. Dust the pudding with icing sugar; serve.

TRAVELLER’S ITINERARY

PRODUCER ALEXANDRA DONALDSON

Bermuda

You can drive the length of this tiny British island in about an hour – which gives you plenty of time to explore its best features.

3

1 DAY 1

7

5

6

Check into The Loren at Pink Beach (1), a stunning luxury hotel with a clean beach-house aesthetic. Spend your first afternoon relaxing by the pool or head to the private beach and let the sound of the waves get you attuned to island time. For dinner, head to The Waterlot Inn for a dining experience that’s well worth the 20-minute drive. Try the surf and turf or the Bermuda fish chowder, an island staple. End your evening at local hot spot Yours Truly, an actual hidden gem (look for the unmarked red door) that specializes in tasty cocktails. Feeling brave? Order the Zombie, a drink that arrives at your table aflame.

DAY 2 Enjoy a leisurely morning at the hotel (yoga at the fitness centre? a long walk on the beach?) before grabbing lunch at D&C Grill, a local favourite for barbecue. Instead of eating in, take your grub to go and sit beachside. After lunch, head out for an easy hike through Tom Moore’s Jungle at Blue Hole Park, followed by a dip in the picturesque crystal-blue swimming hole. Then make your way to nearby Natura Spa at Grotto Bay Beach Resort (2) for a truly luxurious spa treatment given on a floating dock in Prospero’s Cave. Keep the calm going with a stop at the Swizzle Inn, where you can share a pitcher of Bermuda’s iconic drink, the fruity Rum Swizzle, before moving on to Village Pantry for a fresh seafood dinner.

PACK

Fuel up with a healthy hearty breakfast at Devil’s Isle. Rent a bike (oldfashioned or electric) at Social Cycles and hit the Railway Trail, which stretches the length of the island, but can be cut short to suit your comfort. All that biking will work up an appetite so grab a fish sandwich at Art Mel’s Spicy Dicy – another Bermuda must. Its signature dish is full of fried fish, coleslaw and tartar sauce, served on fresh raisin bread. Next, explore the capital, Hamilton (6). Pick up a pair of requisite Bermuda shorts at TABS (4), buy rum souvenirs from Gosling’s Rum (5) and explore local beauty brands at Naked Zero (3). After a full day, head back to The Loren for dinner at Marée (7), a restaurant that features gourmet spins on local specialties. Enjoy your last beach sunset before heading home.

When Manhattan-based design firm Flatiron 27 took on the interior of this New Jersey house, their style directive from the family – a couple with three young kids – was simple: to build the base for a happy family home. “Our clients wanted a bright and energetic space that felt chic yet approachable,” says interior designer Elizabeth McNellis, who collaborated with colleagues Alexis Litman and Jill Raskin. “And there’s no better way to do that than with colour!” The homeowners both love blue, so the design team introduced the hue in the entryway’s ikat-like grasscloth wallcovering and carried it throughout the main floor of the 3,400-square-foot home. To the left of the entry, the living room’s denimblue tufted sofas and small accessories echo the navy on the feature walls. But blue never overwhelms the living room. “The dark walls work because the crisp white STYLEATHOME.COM APRIL 2019

millwork and large windows balance and brighten the room,” says Elizabeth, adding that the accent colours drawn from the rug keep the palette fresh. Vintage- and globalinspired accents keep the eye moving with their colourful pops in a range of pinks and oranges from blush to terracotta.

“Our clients wanted a bright and energetic space that felt chic yet approachable.” In the spacious kitchen, blue is kept to a minimum with the whimsical cloud-print Roman shades. Here, warmth is introduced through wood and texture. Shaker-style cabinetry, white subway tiles with grey grout and brass fixtures and pendant lights lend worldly bistro appeal that feels chic and inviting. The adjacent eat-in area delivers a bold punch with an ultra-durable deep blue

Simple consistency keeps the home’s eclectic elements and bold colours looking refined. The way the kitchen’s eat-in area relates to the living room is a case in point: Light grey built-ins mirror one another, while the spiky chandelier links to the window seat sconces, and the built-in banquette cushion is almost the same deep blue. It’s cohesive without being too conceptual. CHANDELIER, Pottery Barn; DINING CHAIRS, CB2; ROMAN SHADE FABRIC, Studio Four NYC.

This play of fun and function makes sense in the most frequently used rooms in a house where family time can be raucous and guests are always welcome. Meanwhile, upstairs in the master bedroom, the palette is softer. “The homeowners wanted a calm and sophisticated adult space where they

could relax,” says Elizabeth. Awash in grey and blush tones drawn from its serene wallpaper, the room is a clean and elegant escape from the riot of kids – and colour – downstairs. The balance of bold and muted hues, as well as casual and refined furnishings, is whimsical and welcoming wherever you go in the house. And, for these homeowners, that amounts to the perfect happy place.

Pink and brass accessories continue the effect and prettily offset the practicality of a TV and gaming system.

T

wenty-something Azra Bajrami is used to transformations. To her millions of fans she’s known as Azzy, an influential YouTube vlogger and creator of the channel AzzyLand. Away from this alternate universe, she’s a condo owner with a real-life issue: how to inject personality into her builder-basic 3,000-square-foot space. To do so, she relied on Priya J. Mitrovic of Studio P Interiors. “Azzy loves fashion and chic modern style,” says Priya. “I wanted to create a space she would love to come home to.” The interior designer achieved this with colour, textiles and custom made furniture – usual suspects in her style files. But there was one surprise design element. “Azzy wanted every angle of the condo to be videoworthy. She vlogs here, so even the ceilings have to look good!” Shapely mouldings ensure they do and are a nice finishing touch as things keep looking up in Azzyland.

2. Graphic Content As well as looking as cool as all get-out, black accents make the mostly pale living area come alive. Priya worked them in throughout, from the dynamic contemporary chandelier to the distinctive bamboo armchairs (which she invigorated with high-gloss black paint and black velvet lumbar cushions). Together, these doses of black keep the eye moving and punch up the space’s impact.

Kiboshing small-scale condo furniture, she used an extra-long sofa and dual coffee tables to keep things visually interesting.

“Azzy calls the lounge area the ‘Netflix room,’” says Priya (the TV screen, not shown, hangs just above a floating console). The interior designer injected whimsy into this relaxation space with a fun hanging chair positioned to take in the vista of the city and Lake Ontario. The artwork is not an afterthought: This abstract’s palette reiterates the condo’s pops of pink and brass for cool cohesion.

5. Full Coverage

Priya replaced a spare frame of tiles surrounding the fireplace with a dramatic floor-to-ceiling porcelain application that looks like veined marble. “I thought it would be stunning to install the tiles vertically and, since they were available in different finishes, opt for a mix of gloss and matte,” she says. “The varying surfaces add pretty texture that changes with the light.”

6. Well-Rounded

Priya designed this rounded armchair and ottoman to incorporate some curves into the space. It features a swivel mechanism for easy adjustment, allowing the sitter to take in the fire or the killer views. The award plaques are from YouTube: The black one is for Azzy’s first 100,000 subscribers, and the gold is for her first million. “We wanted to place them where they’d be highlighted, as they were big milestones in Azzy’s career,” says Priya.

7. Beyond Basic The builders’ kitchen wasn’t totally without its charms. It just needed to be zhuzhed up. Priya had the cabinets painted crisp white and made contrast her game-changer. “I wanted a bold element against all the white, so, naturally, I chose black.” The accent appears on the island stools, faucet, chandelier and cabinetry hardware, stylishly elevating the bright airy space.

8. Three‘s Company The dining area is visible from three points (the kitchen, living room and lounge area), so every angle, or curve in this instance, needs to be a best one. Mid-century-style chairs are like sculptural pieces of art in the open space. The Tulip table echoes the sleek kitchen countertops, while the dark wood sideboard handsomely provides hidden storage.

character building

TEXT CHRISTY WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY ALEX LUKEY STYLING CHRISTINE HANLON

A former magazine editor elevates her Toronto rental into a personalized abode jam-packed with style.

Hilary Smyth has deftly accomplished three challenges on many modern to-do lists. As a downsizer, she performed a Kondo-worthy paring down of possessions. As an entrepreneur, she started AustinSmyth Commun ications (austinsmyth.com), a company that promotes design businesses and makers. And, as someone in the rental market, she did the near impossible: signed the lease on a charming picture-perfect apartment near some of Toronto’s prettiest parks. “As soon as I walked in, it felt more like a house to me than an apartment,” says Hilary, a former magazine editor who lives and breathes decor. “The landlords had lovingly maintained many of the original elements, including plaster walls, hardwood floors and architectural features. Plus, its walls are a fresh white, and there are lots of windows. All I had to do was move in and unpack.” To channel the old soul of the 800-square-foot two-bedroom abode, Hilary pulled out many of her signature decorative go-tos – think vintage finds, patterned textiles, tranquil colours and hits of grounding black. The effect is one of instant history that stylishly shows off the things Hilary has collected over time. It’s a place where she layers upholstered surfaces with felt rugs, floral throws and velvet cushions;

OPPOSITE Homeowner Hilary Smyth prefers the clean look of a sofa with a single seat cushion and likes to remove ones from the back. “Toss cushions do the same job but are much prettier,” she says. PRINT, WALL PLINTH, TOSS CUSHIONS, round BASKET, Wills & Prior.

BOTTOM LEFT “The kitchen had been completely designed by my landlord before I arrived,” says Hilary. “I love her little touches like the charcoal grout on the backsplash.” Hilary layered in her own personality with framed architectural prints that belonged to her father. She warmed up the monochromatic backdrop with wooden cutting boards and terracotta pots of fresh herbs.

OPPOSITE A simple dining table is surrounded by a whimsical mix of chairs. “Some were found, others purchased inexpensively,” says Hilary. “I love the bistro chairs for their curves and the way they conjure up Parisian cafés.” The extra-long surface does overtime as a place to work, paint or pot plants. RIGHT, TOP The colours of this artwork (Oiseau sur Toit, 1967, by Marc-Antoine Louttre, which belonged to Hilary’s parents) set the tone for this vignette. The brass bar cart was found at a yard sale. “It’s my daughter’s, and I’ll borrow it until she wants it back,” she says. The wall plinth displays a small chinoiserie vase Hilary’s daughter brought her from Paris, where she lived for a year. “This oversized round mirror with a hammered brass frame is a nice contrast to the folksy vibe of the hutch in my entryway,” says Hilary. “I have so many magazines that I stack them on every surface – they make great pedestals for objects!” MIRROR, CB2; HOOK RACK, Vintage Fine Objects; RAINCOAT, Common Sort; VASE, Wills & Prior.

BELOW The perfectly finished bathroom just needed accessories. “I continued my colour palette here with bath products from Maison-Basque, a small shop in the city’s west end.” Hilary bought the striped hammam and Moroccan glasses on a trip to Dubai. TOWEL, COSMETIC BAG, BOX, Maison-Basque.

ABOVE The serene bluewalled bedroom takes its colour cue from the coverlet. “I extrapolated on the gorgeous print with toss cushions and pale blue linen bedding,” Hilary says. She spraypainted the vintage headboard glossy black to ground the room. where she piles books up on the floor; and where she dresses the table with Spode Peacock heirloom china, seashells repurposed as salt and pepper cellars, and big-box-store tumblers – all at once. Yet it looks anything but overstuffed. “I don’t like clutter,” she says. “I carefully pared down my possessions and decorated with just my most favourite things.” This mantra is evident the moment you step inside the entryway, where a wonderfully weathered cabinet has pride of place. “My husband and I love roadside antiques stands, and we picked this piece up at one in Quebec.” Its meaningful provenance is an intimation of what the rest of the apartment holds. “All my friends tell me the space truly reflects me,” says Hilary. “And I have to say, I like that.” FOR SOURCES, SEE OUR WORKBOOK

the girls’ colour preferences and added some charming modern elements to spice up the scheme. “The pink accessories can be easily switched out if their tastes change,” says Tanya, whose design philosophy is all about thoughtfulness and longevity. TIMELESS NAUTICAL Chevron wallpaper in blue and white is paired with coastal accessories to turn Liam Hibbs’s cubby-filled room into a breezy kid’s space.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> OFF THE WALL Once the blue and white chevronpatterned wallcovering went up in the Fort Langley, B.C., bedroom of lifestyle blogger Monika Hibbs’s six-year-old son, Liam, a nautical theme quickly emerged. “Yet the wallpaper’s design can work with any decor,” says Monika. “So as Liam grows and the room changes, the wall treatment won’t need to be changed.” Providing a focal point over the dresser, a gallery of art and memorabilia (including Liam’s own hat) introduces colour and personality. ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BENCH A comfy custom cushion, ship-style light and painted paddles make the window seat a stylish cozy spot. SWEET SAFARI

Inspired by a yellow and white baby blanket, a space filled with wild animals becomes a sunny place for Leo Pasutto to grow. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ROOM TO GROW Designer and TV personality Jillian Harris opted for a dresser in lieu of a change table in son Leo Pasutto’s room in their Kelowna, B.C., home. “The drawers keep all the baby stuff out of the way. In time, the pad can be removed, and I can fill the dresser with big-kid clothes,” she says (now that Leo is two years old, this idea is coming to fruition). Floating shelves and baskets make cleanup super simple, as does the rocker’s removable white slipcover. HELLO, YELLOW “There was no yellow in the nursery at first. Then a friend gave me a little handmade throw decorated with hearts of gold,” Jillian recalls fondly. “That’s where the colour theme began.” Saffron-toned drapery and other sunny accents introduce the inspired accent hue to the otherwise grey-scale space.

PLAYFUL MENAGERIE Whimsy, not sobriety, is at the heart of this design. The decor includes a faux zebra rug (a gift from Leo’s grandma) and a charming tiger wall hanging. As though watching over little Leo, a lovable oversized giraffe sits by the crib, while a lineup of lions in keeping with the room’s sunshiny scheme runs along one of the shelves. “There’s always an animal pal within reach,” says Jillian.

PAINTERLY PINK Lillya Hibbs’s nursery-turned-bedroom is defined by diaphanous watercolour brush strokes and dreamy rose tones.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> WHISPER SOFT In collaboration with Anewall, masterful mama Monika Hibbs designed this wallpaper specifically for her three-year-old daughter, Lillya, before she was born. “This room will always have a special place in my heart,” says Monika of the space that began as a nursery. The wallcovering features oversized blooms in watery pink and peach brush strokes. Super soft cotton bedding nods to the gentle pastel palette. FOREVER FURNITURE When it was time to part with the crib and nursing chair, Monika was at a crossroads. “You can go one of two ways with kids’ furniture: inexpensive because they’ll outgrow it, or investment pieces that will last for decades,” she says. “I’m open to both. In this case, I chose the latter.” The tailored white

nightstand and caned bed frame will look as good when little Lillya is 15 as they do today. Even the warm brass hardware is timeless. STORYTIME A lacy wicker chair and a sleek picture ledge loaded with favourite books create a reading nook in one corner. But before these elements came the chic drapery (trimmed in pink ribbon to reference the floral wallpaper and pretty rug). “I like to hang window coverings before bringing in furnishings,” says Monika. “Drapery adds a cozy vibe, so you don’t need a lot of furniture to make a room feel inviting.”

APRIL 2019

A NEW LOOK In April, we turn fresh eyes on our surroundings. The days may still be holding on to the dregs of winter but, instead of seeing the slush and snow, we delightedly notice the first green shoots poking up through the ground, how the sunshine seems brighter as it filters through our windows, and all the new colours and styles available to decorate our homes. It’s a time of renewal, and we couldn’t be more ready to get started.

“SOME PEOPLE LAUGHED AT US. I laughed, too, actually!” says Janice Dreyer of purchasing the Surrey, B.C., house she and husband Colin had sold two and a half years prior. Nothing about the 2,600-square-foot ranch-style abode, built in the late ’90s and backing onto a golf course, which the couple called home for eight years, had changed. Defined by beige walls, blond wood and taupe granite, the interior was as dated as they left it when they moved to a more modern two-storey (also overlooking a golf course) in Whistler in 2016. “I go through life in 10-year cycles. Every decade, my needs drastically change,” says Janice, whose husband recently retired and whose four grandchildren are growing up. The couple was embarking on

a new chapter, and the familiar abode had “happy ending” written all over it – but first, it needed a major revision, and the couple had the ideal editor to call on. “When my parents lived here last, my brothers and I had young kids, so this place took quite a beating!” says designer daughter Karla Dreyer. “The house wasn’t stylish – it was practical.” But, she says, Janice and Colin have great taste, and the remodel granted her an opportunity to showcase it. “The idea was to open it up, brighten it up and lighten it up,” says Karla, who had the kitchen’s pass-through wall removed to maximize views of the 17th hole. To suit their new needs, Janice also repurposed some rooms, turning what used to be Colin’s office into a bedroom for visiting grandkids and converting the once-playroom

A little went a long way in the save-and-splurge kitchen reno: With one wall and some uppers removed, the cabinetry was spray-painted white and the dated granite counters replaced with marble. “It’s totally transformed,” says Karla. den into a modern man cave. As for the palette, Karla envisioned a pale scheme of white-painted walls and light oak plank floors. Janice was hesitant: “I said, ‘Oh my goodness, I don’t want it to feel like a hospital!’” The designer knew that whiting out the open-concept space could make it seem cold, especially since the ceilings soar to 15 feet in the main living area. But the pro was prepared with the ultimate antidote: texture. “Texture on texture on texture – it makes this house feel warm and inviting,” says Karla, who included silken faux fur, sumptuous leather, nubby tweed, plush velvet, rough-hewn wood, tactile wicker and more. Yet all these rich textiles are expressed succinctly in clean-lined minimal furnishings and accessories, creating a comfortable aesthetic that’s always chic, never schleppy. For all its texture, this home features nearly no colour (a notable exception is the blue suede-topped ottoman in the Elvis Presleyinspired den). “Colour adds pop, punch and interest,” says Karla, “but it can be restricting in an open plan because you have to repeat it.” In place of hues, the designer punctuated rooms with black accents and lush greenery. In the casual dining room, that means an inky multi-pronged chandelier and a watery palm STYLEATHOME.COM APRIL 2019

leaf-print mural. “The treatment is a play on plants. We made it more interesting by layering in a framed cactus print,” she says. The kitchen, too, obeys the pale plus black and verdant decree. It suits the new scheme so well, in fact, that it’s hard to believe it was revised, not rewritten. “This is the same kitchen. We just sprayed it,” says Karla of painting the existing Shakerstyle wooden cabinetry white, noting that she would have chosen a similar profile were she starting from scratch. This move, along with keeping the nearly new high-end appliances, allowed her to splurge on dramatic black lighting, glam brass pulls and gold-veined marble countertops, which luxuriously extend down to the floor on one side of the island. “It’s like a completely new kitchen for a fraction of the price,” says the designer. She also replaced the uppers on the stove wall with shelving, creating room for displays that are both practical and sentimental. “Every choice was very intentional,” says Karla. “It needed to be comfortable and meaningful to my parents.” Janice agrees: “You have to love it. When the designer is done, you live in the space, not them.” She and Colin love every carefully chosen bit of their home, and surely will for the next decade and beyond. STYLEATHOME.COM APRIL 2019

A floral guru brings simple beauty and curated colour to a farmhouse getaway.

A new addition afforded this southern Ontario weekend home a family-focused space for lounging, cooking and eating. Flanking the antique-look fireplace, face-to-face sofas encourage unplugged relaxation: “My husband and I loved reading here at night by the fire,” says interior designer and former homeowner Cynthia Zamaria. Horizontal niches filled

with firewood lend the wall eyecatching rustic yet refined flair. “M

other Nature is the original stylist,” says Cynthia Zamaria, a floral and interior designer who splits her time between Toronto and Port Dover, Ont., and whose passion for petals started early in life, when she visited nurseries with her mom. “Nature’s design lessons are everywhere – in the colour combinations, textures and groupings in the wild. I take my inspiration from it in my florals and interiors.” This nature-as-muse aesthetic plays out in the Keene, Ont., farmhouse she and her husband, Graham Loughton, bought as a weekend getaway for themselves and their three kids in 2011. Clad in wood composite that resembles board and batten siding, the simple two-level structure respects its surroundings: 113 picturesque acres overlooking Rice Lake and animated with sustainably grown humble blooms, including snapdragons, zinnias, sunflowers and cosmos. “The original farmhouse came with four bedrooms, a basic bathroom, a tiny kitchen and a dark living room,” says Cynthia. But she and Graham both love old houses, so neither of them had the heart to tear it down. Instead, they spruced it up over a span of six months and built an addition with contracting services by Gilbert + Burke. The new wing, which increased the home’s square footage from 1,300 to 2,400, has a great room, kitchen (the old one was a lemon) and master suite.

With its marble countertops, subway tile backsplash and Shakerstyle cabinetry – as well as a dash of glam in the brass hardware – the sparkling white kitchen is a classic beauty. Oversized barnlook lighting (which is repeated on the farmhouse exterior) is a fitting pop of green in this flower lover’s nature-forward design. RIGHT On the floating fireplace mantel, a rousing display of asymmetrical blooms (Cynthia’s handiwork) is “wild and organic like you’d find in nature, so that the flowers speak for themselves,” she says. OPPOSITE, LEFT Colour is all around, says the interior designer, who used tawny wood tones – from the wide-plank floors to the reclaimed-wood harvest table to the floor-to-ceiling log nooks – to make the dining and lounging areas sing. The master bedroom epitomizes Cynthia’s mix-and-match style: The spindle-legged side table and faux fur throw are family heirlooms; the oil painting and basket, garage sale finds; the table lamp and rug, new buys. BEDDING, Hudson’s Bay; TABLE LAMP, HomeSense; RUG, IKEA.

“The most important aspect of the design was to capture the magical views of the lake,” says Cynthia. A wall of windows in the great room takes care of that in spades. “We also wanted a casual organic-feeling interior to mirror the natural environment.” Brimming with rough-hewn wood (a wall of log-filled niches is especially beguiling), the white-painted rooms have a cocooning yet vibrant quality. “Colour doesn’t have to mean loud pink,” says Cynthia, who views wood tones as hues. Colour also comes from the couple’s lively collection of preloved furniture and accessories. “Graham and I love scouring thrift stores and antiques markets for unique and memorable items,” she says, noting they aren’t snobs about their selections. “We curate what we love. Somehow it comes together – treasures and trash, pedigree and faux.” The mix unifies the spaces with a subdued palette of green, grey, white and black, in addition to lending an unpretentious collected-over-time feel. And, of course, flowers grace the interior and exterior. “There are always flowers – and they’re never fake. Flowers are beautiful treasures from nature; they’re a little luxury you can give yourself,” says the designer, who has now sold this property and is currently luxuriating in fixing up a new one, a historic home in Port Dover known as the Millar House. You can bet Mother Nature’s influence makes an appearance there, too.

“WE CURATE WHAT WE LOVE. SOMEHOW IT ALL COMES TOGETHER – TREASURES AND TRASH.”

ABOVE & RIGHT Colour and pattern are on show in this country-chic bedroom. Stacked garage sale-score paintings and freshly picked daffodils brighten and accentuate the canted wall. TABLE LAMPS, THROWS, striped PILLOWCASE, angular heathered LUMBAR CUSHION, wicker TRAY, HomeSense; solid TOSS CUSHION, Indigo.

LEFT Snapped up at an antiques shop, chairs that once graced the House of Commons suit the unconventional office. Their zesty green brilliantly contrasts the white Tulip-style table. Of the artwork, Cynthia says: “The two men juxtapose wonderfully. One is drinking, one is smoking; one is old, one is new.” TABLE, CONSOLE, IKEA; TABLE LAMP, HomeSense; sea urchin PAPER HOLDER, Indigo.

nyone with a soft spot for charming historical homes can breathe a sigh of relief that it was Lindsay Mens Craig, with her husband, Michael Craig, who purchased this 100-year-old two-storey home in Toronto four years ago. “We were in a bidding war, and lots of the offers were from builders who wanted to tear it down,” says Lindsay. “The previous owners sold it to us because they knew we wanted to fix it up.” And who better to save this 2,500-square-foot Craftsman-style gem than Lindsay, a designer at internationally renowned Sarah Richardson Design. Indeed, the house was in good hands. Lindsay’s refined aesthetic exhibits a honed approach that’s at once sentimental and sensible, classic and youthful, airy and cozy. With a penchant for anything with character, she was keen to preserve the home’s original charm. Sharing the space with their two daughters, Kennedy, 5, and Cameron, 2, and their Shih Tzu-Bichon mix, Axel, the couple also wanted it to be family-friendly, relaxed and suitable for entertaining. “Structurally, the house was in good shape, but it hadn’t been touched in 50 years,” says Lindsay. Elements like a lime green bathroom, metal cabinets in the kitchen and an excess of linoleum called for an update. With help from Lindsay’s brother, Greg Mens, who owns a contracting company, the renovation was completed in six months.

The classic all-white kitchen features traditional raised panel cabinetry, a tough engineered quartz countertop and a dressy backsplash made up of bevelled Calacatta marble subway tiles. The brass elements reference the era of the original kitchen. Along with updating the look, the couple wanted to improve functionality by opening up the main floor. “Between the kitchen and the dining room, we installed a structural beam so we could remove the wall and have more of an open-concept space. That was pretty major,” says Lindsay. She imbued character by salvaging original architectural details, such as the living room’s impressive coffered ceiling, and adding them in elsewhere. “Because the lot is 400 feet deep with a pool, we called this our cottage in the city,” says Lindsay. “The house lends itself to a classic look, and within that aesthetic we added some cottage-style elements.” For example, beadboard was applied to the front of the foyer’s window bench, as well as the kitchen and living room ceilings. The resulting architectural envelope created a fitting backdrop for Lindsay’s collection of vintage and antique items – cherished pieces she’s amassed over time. “I tend not to like trendy things,” she says. “I’m not into modern. I like things with a story. I also like seeing a piece of furniture and thinking: What can I do to make it unique?” For example, the living room’s

chic coffee table was a $100 find she had spray-painted and topped with a new slab of marble. And she’s not opposed to refinishing old furniture to give it new life or salvaging items from the curb. While Lindsay wanted a timeless clean-lined look, her fresh colour scheme and masterful mix of patterns keep things light, lively and inviting. “I love all shades of blue,” she says. “I’ve tried to live with other colours, but they don’t make me as happy. It’s what I’m familiar with, and I wanted the palette to be casual and comfortable.” Imagining the couple hanging out in the living room, reading books to the kids with the fire going, we say: Mission accomplished. MICHAEL AND TEREZA RIDGEWAY AREN’T SHY ABOUT SETTING A challenge. For their Florida beach house, they had two main design directives: Make it opulent yet kid-friendly and eschew every beach house cliché, despite the proximity to sand and sea. Luckily, their designer is someone who truly understands them – Michael’s sister, Katie Scott – and she was able to execute exactly what they had in mind. Here’s how she fashioned a Jonathan Adler-meets-Mad Men scheme that defies design expectations and keeps low-key comfort at its heart. 86 |

L I G H T FA N TAST I C High ceilings, tall windows and a sunny locale mean that natural light plays a feature role in this beach home’s decor. To accentuate it, designer Katie Scott had the window and door frames painted black and, in the living room, echoed their graphic effect in the black and white rug. The scheme lends the set-up, which might otherwise be lost to the tall white walls, a strong and stately presence.

TOAST W I T H T H E M O ST Near the dining table, a mid-centurystyle cabinet flanked by traditional Louis XVII-style chairs serves as a small drinks station. It’s ideal for easy entertaining: Guests can help themselves to a cocktail, and the chairs can be pulled into use when lots of visitors come to dinner. Tasteful pineapple details add quiet whimsy to the elegant vignette.

POP ART The dining room’s formal foundation (including the glass and brass-look dining table) is tempered with more casual elements, such as the custom banquette (waterproof, wipeable and family-friendly) and funky, punchy artwork that features a few of the homeowners’ favourite celebrities, from Princess Di to Bono.

M AST E R C L ASS There’s a splash of beach house style in the master bedroom, but it’s far from kitschy or clichéd. Navy, white, brass, pale wood and woven details call to mind bare feet and breezes, while the black window frames and puddling drapery feel cozy and formal.

FA M I LY VA LU E S Clean lines, pared-back accents, a tiled wall and a monochrome palette feel rich and elegant but are simple and easy to maintain. His-and-hers sinks and ample vanity storage make this bathroom super convenient for maintaining tidy family living – which is exactly what the homeowners wanted.

B E AC H , P L E AS E This bedroom’s personality is all in the details. Crayon-bright pops of yellow, green and blue punch up the white walls, while a few doses of black ground the space and mature the kindergarten-cute palette. While the artwork references the sea, it still doesn’t fit within the beach house cliché – it’s fresh and modern, and as fitting for a house in Toronto or New York as it is for one on the shore.

SOMETIMES, SUNNY SKIES WITH THE SAND AND SEA JUST A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY ARE THE ONLY REMINDERS OF THE BEACH YOU NEED. THIS HOUSE SUCCESSFULLY SKIRTS TYPICAL BEACH HOUSE STYLE, ACHIEVING A LOOK AS FRESH AS AN OCEAN BREEZE.
