At a Council meeting, they endorsed recommendations that would provide cost incentives in event charges for organisers who can show they have eliminated single-use plastic from their event. This could see organisers save some money in return for using environmentally friendly items at their events. And more importantly, it should minimise the impact of our urban footprint on the natural environment and be a model for sustainable living that others might follow.

NEWS A REGIONAL ROUND-UP OF HEADLINE MAKERS BLUE MOUNTAINS HALFWAY MARK

Council says it is performing well in delivering its 2018-2019 commitments, at the halfway mark of delivering the 4-year Delivery Program and budget. As of 31 December 2018, the six-month progress report identified 73% of Major Projects, 86% of the Assets Works Program and 97% of Operational Plan actions for 2018-2019 are on track. Council says other highlights include: Adopting the 10-year Open Space and Recreation Strategic Plan and being honoured in three categories, including Customer Service Team of the Year, at the 2018 National Local Government Customer Service Awards.

Varuna Writers House Chair Jennifer Scott, Liberal Candidate for the Blue Mountains Owen Laffin and Varuna Writers House Director Veechi Stuart.

VARUNA WRITERS HOUSE

Legislative Council member of the NSW Government Shayne Mallard and Minister for the Arts Don Harwin announced that the Varuna Writers’ House in Katoomba has received a grant of $100,000 towards the building of a fully accessible Writers’ Studio on the much-loved heritage listed property.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Blue Mountains City Council has developed draft parking precinct plans and a draft parking permit policy to guide the management of parking in busy tourist areas and invites community feedback on the proposals. Parking precinct plans are detailed parking studies for specific locations to address issues with parking demand, and the availability of parking spaces.

Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said: “From new furniture and WIFI, new spaces for creative education and even a new mobile arts centre that will deliver its offering direct to the heart of the Western Sydney community, this funding will enable sustainable improvements with long-lasting impact.

“The aim of a parking precinct plan is to improve the balance between resident, visitor, and business parking needs and to shift the cost burden of visitor infrastructure away from residents”, said Council’s spokeswoman. The community is invited and encouraged to view the draft plans and provide feedback. The draft documents are on exhibition and submissions received from 4 March to 15 April 2019.

Seniors Week Recognition Awards

OUTSTANDING SENIORS

Council recently celebrated our community’s older people at the annual Seniors Week Recognition Awards. The awards ceremony, held in the last week of the NSW Seniors Festival, was

20

held at the Blue Mountains Theatre and Community Hub at Springwood. Thirty-seven individuals were honoured, and three organisations, for their outstanding contribution to the community.

Blue Mountains Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill, said: “The Seniors Festival and our annual Seniors Week Recognition Awards provide an opportunity to promote a better understanding about seniors and the value they add to our lives.”

NEWS LITHGOW FUTURE FINDERS CAREER

Council’s Future Finders career pathway program recently supported local young musician Isabelle Cobcroft to build her portfolio through the Future Finders Career Helper. Isabelle, known as Izzy, was awarded the Future Finders Career Helper after attending the Halloween Muso’s boot camp and performing at Lithgow Halloween 2018. Impressed by her participation and performance, the Future Finders crew awarded Izzy the opportunity to professionally record two of her own original tracks in the expectation that it would assist her to build her portfolio, online presence and apply for gigs. “It was such a fantastic opportunity. It was hard to write the two songs I needed but I enjoyed the challenge. I learned a lot from experiencing the process of recording a song and also seeing how much work has to be put in by the studio to make it as good as it can be,” said Izzy. “It made me see how much I want this to be my career. I felt privileged and thankful to be awarded this year’s Future Finders Career Helper” The Future Finders career pathway program was made possible by the Youth Opportunities grant provided by the NSW State Government. To date the program has provided young people with business workshops, leadership activities; employment and education tasters.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Lithgow Library celebrated International Women’s Day with lunchtime speaker that included Lithgow’s first female Fire Captain Melanie Palmer. International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “Better the balance – better the world” which highlights the need for building a gender balanced world. Gender balance everywhere, in sports reporting, business, government, even everyday life as for some, being a woman means you are a second class citizen.

BATHURST TAXI SHELTER

A new shelter on Howick Street near the Stockland Shopping Centre will be constructed with works anticipated to commence next week. The new shelter will improve passenger and driver access, and safety in the vicinity. It will also increase comfort by providing passengers with protection from the elements. Temporary changes to pedestrian and taxi access will be in place while works are underway. The taxi zone will be relocated towards Bentinck Street to the unused bus zone. There will be minimal impact on traffic in the area. Mayor Graeme Hanger said the area is a popular shopping precinct with a busy doctor’s surgery nearby. “This facility is going to not only improve safety but also help people stay dry during the wet weather and keep them out of the sun during the hot summer months,” he said. Council received $120,000 for construction of the facility from the NSW Government’s Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grant.

CCTV NETWORK

Stage one of the Smart Cities CCTV installation in the Bathurst CBD will commence soon with

underboring works on William Street (BMEC to Keppel Street) and Keppel Street (William Street to Bentinck Street). More information on Council’s CBD CCTV project can be found on the Smart Communities page on the Council’s website.

PERTHVILLE

The road and stormwater works at Perthville will resume this week after Council removed the project from the principal contractor. The project, which commenced last year, is designed to improve road surfaces and stormwater drainage. Mayor Graeme Hanger OAM said he felt for the residents of Perthville and that he could understand their frustration that the project had been delayed. “Council has on numerous occasions raised displeasure over the rate of progress and the conduct of the contractor. On Friday we exercised our rights under the contract that was in place to bring the matter to a speedy resolution,” he said. Council crews will commence works on site later this week at Perthville to continue and complete the project.

NEWS HAWKESBURY

Composting Workshop featured a strong turnout. Upgrades to the Animal Shelter are moving forward.

ANIMAL SHELTER

Stage 1 of the improvement works at the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter at Mulgrave is continuing, with the replacement of the roof over the existing dog kennels well underway. The new pitched roof will minimise direct sunlight during summer and optimise sunlight during winter. Hawkesbury City Council aims to have the works associated with Stage 1 completed by March. The new works have been made possible using a $100,000 donation from the deceased estate of animal lover Anna Zylstra, and an earlier $75,000 private contribution from another donor. The $100,000 donation was from the deceased estate of animal lover Anna Zylstra, who left money to the Shelter as part of her wish to help animals.

There have been strong signs of public support from all side of politics for Orange’s proposed new Life Sciences precinct. Part of the Activate Orange blueprint developed by Orange City Council, the Life Sciences precinct proposed for south Orange would include the existing hospital site, the new private hospital, the DPI‘s agribusiness support work, education and research facilities as well as clinical media trials run by the Health Service. The current assets on the site would be used to leverage investment attraction for associated developments, industrial manufacturing and services companies. Orange City Council has lodged an expression of interest with the NSW Government to have the Life Sciences Precinct designated as a Special Activation Zone. The council is also seeking $70 million government funding for infrastructure plus $3 million for the costs of detailed planning. State Member for Orange, Phil Donato, welcomed the plan. “We’ve got a fantastic facility out there on the southern side of town. We’ve got a world class hospital, and new private hospital facility going in across the road, the Bloomfield precinct as well,” Phil Donato said. “We really are a medical hub for not only regional NSW but regional Australia.”

CONCRETE ROUNDABOUT

Work begins on Monday to build a roundabout on at the Woodward Street and Wentworth Lane intersection, which when completed will make the intersection safer. Residents and businesses in the area were given letters, and in some cases spoken to faceto-face two weeks ahead of the scheduled work. The project, worth about $840,000 was partly funded by the NSW Government through its NSW Safer Roads program with $695,000, and the rest from Orange City Council.

BUDDING WRITERS

Organisers have chosen the birthday of one’s Australia’s best-known writers and poets to open entries for this year’s Banjo Patterson Writing competition. Orange Mayor Cr Reg Kidd said writers from across the country are set to compete in the annual contest. “Last year there was a wealth of new talent who came forward to enter their creative work into the contest,’ Cr Reg Kidd said. “No less than seventy-six people entered the short story category and there were 83 entries in the contemporary poetry section.” There has been a number of reported crashes where people have been seriously hurt in and around this intersection, which is why it qualified for the state funding. As part of the project, a refuge near the

“The first prize for the Short Story category is $2,000, so it certainly creates a lot of interest. “It was great to see many younger writers having a go. We had 25 entries in the Children’s section, which takes entries from writers up to the age of 16. There are three categories: Short Story - First prize $2,000; Contemporary Poetry - First prize $2,000; and ABC Central West Radio Children’s Writing Awards - First prize $200. The winners will be publicly announced at the Readers and Writers Festival to be held on Saturday, August 3. Racecourse Road intersection will be built, providing a safe crossing point. The roundabout is planned to be fully open to traffic towards the end of June, dependant on weather.

DAYSPRING

An open garden will be held at Hazelbrook on the weekend of April 13th and 14th to raise funds for projects in East Timor. Jan and Ken Goodlet have developed a permaculture garden some 40 years ago, and they are making it available to support the Blue Mountains East Timor Sisters work helping women and girls education and self-sufficiency. The two-hectare garden contains many species of fruit and nut trees. There are paths that meander past the ponds, trees, vegetables and flowers to a gentle bushland waterfall. The garden is great just for a wander, and Jan will speak about the garden at 11am and 2pm for those who would like to hear from her vast experience of having a permaculture garden. A wide variety of plants are for sale, with tea, coffee, snacks. An entry donation of $10, or $5 for concession holders is suggested while children are welcome free. The open garden is at ‘Dayspring’ 85 Winbourne Road, Hazelbrook, 10am until 4pm. For enquiries please Phone 47586591.

THE CLEARY COLLECTION

Richard Larter, untitled (Pat), 1975, collage and ink on paper

A showcase of the generous donation by Alan Cleary will be on display at the Hawkesbury Regional Gallery. Alan (Tony) Cleary has had a lifetime passion for the visual arts. In the 1970s he started visiting commercial galleries in Sydney’s CBD and Paddington, reading up on the critics’ reviews and art journals. His passion for art grew, and he decided to start his own collection. Alan was able to collect small works by some of Australia’s most significant artists with the collection including works by Arthur Boyd, Charles Blackman, Lloyd Rees, Nora Heysen. With contemporary artists including works by Elizabeth Cummings, Tom Carment, Jenny Sages, Janet Dawson and Wendy Sharpe to name just a few. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the first donation Alan made from his collection to the people of the Hawkesbury. Initially through the Hawkesbury City Council, in anticipation of the building of the Regional Gallery which came to fruition in 2005. Once the Gallery was complete the collection was moved and subsequent donations arrived here. Sometimes quite unexpectedly! Exhibition Date: 5 April to 26 May.

JULES READ STRENGTH CAN OFTEN COME FROM OUT OF THE ORDINARY PLACES.

ules Read is a silversmith with a passion for creating pieces with character and which represent an individual’s story. Having lost her father recently, Jules is more determined than ever that her pieces become treasured mementos and story-pieces for their owners. “I like the fact that I’m making something for someone,” she explains over cups of tea in the kitchen of the Oakville home she shares with her husband Phil and their teenage children Kurtis and Larissa. Jules creates bespoke pieces

STORY BY JONI LEIMGRUBER of jewellery, ordered by customers with specific messages and inscriptions requested. “I might not know them but I might think - what’s the story behind this? Sometimes I’m lucky and they’ll share the story with me.” Jules’ most recent range ‘Hope’ was created in support of Relay for Life, in memory of her beloved father Stan Sainty. “It’s a necklace with meaning,” she says. “A little reminder that we must never lose hope.” From every ‘Hope’ necklace sold, $10 is donated directly to ‘Helping Hands for the Cancer Council’, the Relay for

Life team the whole family is involved with. Relay for Life was a charity Stan supported for many years, having lost many good friends and relatives to cancer. “My dad was deeply affected by his many great friends who had succumbed to various cancers,” Jules explains. “He always did his best to support Helping Hands. Little did we realise that cancer would take him too.” Those who’ve purchased ‘Hope’ necklaces often share their stories with Jules; “One lady’s husband has terminal cancer so she bought

“Jules’ most recent range ‘Hope’ was created in support of Relay for Life.” a necklace. Another had a friend whose child was born with a heart defect,” she explains and adds that for both clients, hope had the same meaning. It’s a range which serves as a reminder to whoever is wearing it, that there’s always hope, even on our darkest days. It’s a powerful message and one which Jules is grateful to be able to share through her work. “I’m mostly self-taught so I’m reluctant to use the word jeweller,” she says of the skill she’s quickly turned into a successful online business. “I have had tuition but no formal certificate to say that I’m professionally trained. Basically, I love jewellery and about five years ago I thought, maybe I can make it. I just tried and it sort of evolved from there.” Having transformed a section of the family’s shed into a jewellery-making studio, Jules spends days on end in the idyllic quiet of rural Oakville, creating bespoke and one-off pieces, watched by the local wallabies who often visit the family’s five-acre property. And of course, the family’s pet dogs Leo and Poppy are always by her side. Though it can be an isolating task, the studio is also a place where Jules is able to be creative and process some of her own grief after the loss of her father. It seems fitting that it’s through the moulding of silver that Jules finds comfort. Her father, Stan was a fitter and turner - he too forged a career out of manipulating metals. One necklace which is particularly special to Jules was made only a short time before her father was diagnosed with the pancreatic cancer which would - only a few short months later - take his life. The piece, ‘Hawkesbury River’ is a fond reminder for Jules of the happy times she spent at the river with her father. “I’ve got beautiful memories of the river because my dad was a boat racer

34

Blue Mountainslife

and they were always happy times,” she says. A keen competitor, Stan still holds the drag boat world speed record for towing a single skier. With Stan’s Blown Alcohol Hydroplane ‘Fallacy’ reaching speeds of 230kph on the Hawkesbury River opposite Governor Phillip Park in Windsor, the 1983 record still stands. The piece, which Jules is particularly proud of, placed second in the Craft NSW Competition in 2017 and has been lauded as an incredibly beautiful, wellcrafted and iconic piece. “Sometimes you have to stop thinking and go where your heart takes you,” Jules says of her creative process. “My heart is seeking beautiful memories and beautiful places and I want to incorporate these feelings into my jewellery designs. I love to create personalised jewellery with words of love and encouragement but I also want to create more jewellery that evokes memories by just seeing and wearing a landscape or a symbol.” With this in mind, another favourite is a piece inspired by the Blue Mountains, a pendant entitled ‘Echo Point’. The region has always been one of Jules’ favourite places to visit. “It has such a vast and breathtaking landscape with beautiful

valley views. This pendant is inspired by The Three Sisters at the Echo Point.” And for those who’d like to try their hand at jewellery-making, Jules offers classes at the Hawkesbury Library Regional Gallery in Windsor. “I love it!” she says of teaching her craft. “A lot of people think they’re not crafty and they don’t have any talent but they’ve just never explored it before. That’s really fun – to finish the class and they’re so excited because they’ve made something themselves and they might never have done that before.” Jules is blessed to have a supportive family cheering her on. Phil, a local plumber is one of her greatest sources of support, despite that he’s not a huge fan of jewellery. “He’s not a shopper,” she says. “We’ve been married 20 years - I just get what I want for myself and that’s ok!” she adds with a laugh. Jules has made him a couple of special pieces, including a ring. “He’s not a jewellery guy,” she says. “But he’s very supportive. I’ve got my whole family behind me. I’m very lucky and my daughter loves jewellery!” Terry Sainty, Jules’ brother, is also a fitter and turner and is hands-on, supporting his sister by helping create Jules’ popular range of ring cone stands. “It’s a collaboration with my very talented brother,” she says. “Thank you, Terry!” Though she may be a silversmith and a jeweller, Jules is also an artist and a story-teller. Her pieces are unique and special to their wearers. Rather than just another piece to add to the collection, these are truly individual, personal creations. Jules describes it best in her own words. “It’s wearable art - it’s like a story without words.” Jules Read jewellery is available for purchase at Hawkesbury Library Regional Gallery, Windsor and at julesread.com.au bml

CHEF

PEOPLE

veryone loves a good meal, but for Wentworth Falls resident Nina Huynh, there’s no place she would rather be than the kitchen. Nina was a high achiever at school who turned down a career in medical science to follow her passion for food. It’s a decision the young single mother has never regretted for a second. “I graduated high school with a UAI in the 90s, I tried to study medical science at university but something was missing and it just wasn’t what I was looking for,” says Nina Huynh. “My life was all about food and the kitchen, the smell, the sounds – everything, it was where I knew I wanted to be.” Nina decided to take the first steps by doing a barista course and finding work as a barista. One evening while looking for courses online she enrolled in the Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery at TAFE NSW Wentworth Falls on a whim. “I chose that location as I wanted to learn about French cookery – the basics, fundamentals plus the teachers there had so much experience I could learn a lot from them.” For Nina Huynh, her desire to be a chef was sparked in high school. However, like many young school leavers, she didn’t realise just how many career opportunities are available in food. According to TAFE NSW, there are a staggering 80,723 jobs for qualified chefs, yet 65 per cent of all positions for qualified chefs are currently going unfilled. Chefs make up almost seven per cent of Australia’s working population. Now in her late twenties, Nina has completed the Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery at TAFE NSW Wentworth Falls and is now working at Yellow, Sydney’s first hatted vegetarian restaurant. However, it hasn’t all been easy sailing for Nina, a single parent with a four-year-old daughter. Combining motherhood and full-time study was a challenge she was fortunate enough to be able to study in Wentworth Falls where she lives. She was rewarded for her efforts last year when she was awarded the 2018 TAFE NSW Excellence Award for Tourism and Experience Services. TAFE NSW Blue Mountains Head Teacher Tourism and Hospitality, Wendy Ashcroft-Ware, said “Nina had to overcome personal adversity, and at no stage did she let it affect her studies or the raising of her daughter. She is a positive role model and is an excellent team player.” Nina credits her four-year-old daughter with inspiring her to follow her dreams. “I really wanted to be a good role model for my daughter and show her that it is possible to be

a parent and study full time in order to fulfil your dreams.” Nina has also been an inspiration at the restaurant she works at, never letting her own adversity get her down. Head Chef at Yellow, Chris Benedet, said “TAFE NSW has laid the foundation for Nina to climb her way to the top. Nina is a very dedicated and super passionate chef who comes to work every day with an enthusiasm that inspires others. She often finds herself at home experimenting on her days off, such is her commitment.” “As a single mother in the highly demanding hospitality industry it’s not easy on a day to day basis, but she works hard for what she wants and finds a way to juggle a work-life balance with both enthusiasm and dedication, she’s truly a role model not just for woman in our industry but single mums alike.” During her studies, Nina would volunteer at the local farmers’ markets by unloading trucks and learning about seasonal produce. She now uses her own money to purchase overflow fruit and vegetables and donates it to the community preschool her daughter attends. People often ask Nina why she chose to become a chef when there are other easier jobs for a young mum to do. Nina says; “It’s never too late to do what you really want to do. If you put your mind to it, you can do it. People think that there are certain ways that you have to achieve your dreams but you just need to believe in yourself. TAFE NSW was so flexible and it was an incredible experience – something I’ll never forget,” Nina said. Yellow, the restaurant where Nina is forging a reputation as an up and coming chef is a vegetarian bistro in Potts Point. The theme is inspired by the European dining scene, where contemporary food and wine are served in an informal setting at affordable prices. “The thing I love most about working at Yellow is that it’s such an exciting and new space. We are turning everything on its head, creating new ways to treat vegetables and playing with seasonality,” says Nina. “Being a chef has always been my dream, I have always admired chefs for all the hard work, when a dish is plated up it’s so beautiful. If I hadn’t studied at TAFE NSW Blue Mountains, I would never have learnt the skills that I now have and be working in such an amazing restaurant. I’m really enjoying honing my chef skills and learning every day.” Nina’s passion and hard work prove that there are plenty of exciting jobs out there if we are honest about true interests and follow our dreams. bml

A DREAM, SOME LUCK AND PLENTY OF TALENT CAN GET YOU FAR, AS AINSLEY MELHAM DISCOVERED.

athurst born, musical theatre star Ainsley Melham started performing at age three and has never looked back. He remembers his mother telling him that as a young child, music would always make him move so she put him in dance lessons. “I don’t remember a day when performing hasn’t been a part of my life.”

Blue Mountainslife

Trained at WAAPA (Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts) and graduating in 2013, Ainsley’s first role was as a cast member of the international children’s pop group Hi-5., as part of their Australasian tours, and Hi-5 House TV series. He began his musical theatre career in 2016 skating into the Hayes Theatre as Sonny Malone in Mathew Managements’ Xanadu. Soon after he traded skates for a magic carpet and

opened Disney’s Hit Broadway Musical and ‘Must See Show of the Year’ (Entertainment Weekly) Aladdin-The Musical in Sydney in the title role. He has toured Australia with the production playing Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth and made his Broadway debut in the title role of the American production at Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre in New York on the 19 February 2019.

“I did doubt myself at times. I said to my agent ‘I’m trying to give them what they want’ but it didn’t seem enough." When he looks back on his career so far, Ainsley sees a pattern saying “the harder I have pushed, the greater the reward. Whether it was booking the next job, or taking a step forward personally, the hard work has always gifted a reward.” As a young boy growing up in a country town, Ainsley recalls that his desire to sing, dance and perform on stage was not always readily accepted and he came up against some wellmeaning resistance from those around him. “Of course there were people in my community who supported me fiercely, but there were many other people who had their own opinions about what direction I should be following”. As a result, Ainsley worked ever harder on developing and extending his skills and was soon given more advanced material to work on and saw that other people outside his community were excited and interested to see ‘a boy from the country’ who danced well and this helped forged his self-belief and determination. Pivotal to his career development was his time as a student at St Stanislaus’ College in Bathurst. “At Stannies I was lucky enough to have the support of some brilliant mentors. I have these teachers to thank for making my

time there one that I look back on fondly. I was encouraged at every turn to explore my interest in performing.” A Stannies boy from Year 7, it was in Year 12 that Ainsley started to seriously consider what he would do once he had graduated. This question sparked an investigation by Ainsley and his creative art teacher, as to which institutions around the country offered a chance to study theatre. Less than a week later his teacher came back to him with the WAPPA application forms printed, in hand, and said, ‘if you want to make it in theatre, this is where you need to go’ and so they filled them in and sent them off. By the end of the year, Ainsley had his acceptance letter. And there is a life lesson there says Ainsley: “ ‘Surround yourself with people who are interested in your success’. This sort of sounds like one of those clichés that are thrown around a lot, about filling your life with positive people, but it’s a cliché for a reason, because it holds truth”. Auditioning for his biggest role to date, Aladdin, was not simple or straight forward says Ansley “I did doubt myself at times. I said to my agent ‘I’m trying to give them what they want’ but it didn’t seem enough. She explained, “they already believe you can play the part, they see

the potential in you, stop complicating it, just go in there and be yourself, just be charming, charismatic Ainsley, not Ainsley trying to be what he thinks they want to see.” Her advice was spot on. A week later he was booked to play the lead role. As guest speaker at a recent Year 12 Inspiration Series dinner at St Stanislaus’ College, Ainsley shared his personal journey and life lessons learned in a heart-warming and encouraging speech. “You all share a common thread,” he said to the students “you are all Stannies men. Stannies gives its men access to the highest level of education, there is no doubting that... but Stannies goes one step further, it provides its men with something even more valuable, it teaches them to be inquisitive, focused, passionate, nurturing, understanding men. With these qualities under your belt, the path ahead of you will always be a rewarding one. Enjoy it, embrace it... you will only walk it once”. Travelling the world as a performer sounds like a heady mix of opening nights, red carpets and paparazzi. However, Ainsley is one performer whose feet are firmly planted on the ground and his heart set on being his best self on and off the stage. bml

BLUE MOUNTAINS LIVEABILITY iveability is becoming a bit of a buzz word as more people choose to move house for lifestyle reasons. The “tree change” movement continues to provide momentum in the property market in the Blue Mountains. Whether renting or buying, upsizing or downsizing, moving house is a big decision with many factors to consider. This can be particularly difficult when relocating away from what you know. In making major life changes people are considering liveability cts such as housing affordability, local amenity, environment, eational opportunities, stability, culture and proximity to transport, infrastructure, healthcare and schools. Australian cities generally rank quite highly for liveability on an international scale. So what do the Blue Mountains offer potential buyers? People looking to live in the Lower Mountains are often attracted to the proximity to the city and employment opportunities. This area is well serviced by the additional infrastructure of Western Sydney such as hospitals, university, transport and shopping centres which provide a more urban environment very close to the leafy Lower Blue Mountains. This proximity can also make house prices slightly higher than further

from the CBD. As you travel further up into the Mid- Mountains areas such as Springwood, Hazelbrook and Lawson offer a peaceful village vibe with greater affordability in a less urban setting, with a greater travel time to some major infrastructure. Local schools service younger families well in these areas. As the altitude increases and the temperatures drop, the Upper Blue Mountains offer a genuine mountain lifestyle across the snow line. Slightly more removed from the urban sprawl peaceful townships like Wentworth Falls and Blackheath provide a real sense of community with good schools and village centres. Katoomba and Leura provide commercial centres with hospital, transport hubs, shops and a thriving cafe culture. Different demographics and age groups will consider different liveability factors when choosing where to live, but overall the Blue Mountains offers relatively affordable lifestyle opportunity, close to a major CBD and set in a stunning World Heritage National Park. It’s no wonder that so many people are choosing a “tree change” to this very liveable region. To discuss your specific property questions feel free to contact Catriona Swan on 0414 903 613.

t’s well known that a human can get sunburnt in five minutes, but did you know that grapes can burn in this time too? If you answered yes to this question you are probably either a vineyard owner or Dr Joanna Gambretta, the Central West scientist looking for a solution. “Sunburn can affect up to 15 per cent of wine grape berries in Australia in any given season,” Dr Gambetta said. “The browning, cracking and berry shrivelling means that yields are reduced and the fruit can be downgraded, causing significant economic losses to growers and wineries. “On a sensitive, fully mature Chardonnay

grape, symptoms of sunburn can appear within five minutes once surface temperature on the berry reaches an ambient temperature of 40–43° C.” With wine and grape production becoming a major industry in the greater Orange region, Charles Sturt University (CSU) is investigating how to reduce the damage and financial losses. The project is being led by CSU postdoctoral researcher Dr Joanna Gambetta from the National Wine and Grape Industry Centre. Funding has been provided by Wine Australia’s Wine Australia’s Incubator Initiative. Dr Gambetta said the combination of high temperatures, harsh light and ultraviolet

radiation can lead to a nasty case of sunburn for people and winegrapes. Interestingly, not all grapes burn the same, with some varieties more susceptible than others. Research has shown others factors play a role too including grape variety, the stage of development the vines are at, water stress and canopy management. Sometimes grape growers remove leaves from the vine to aid in disease management, Dr Gambetta said, so one area of her research has been to identify the optimum time for leaf removal. “I’m trying to pinpoint the best time to remove leaves to balance disease reduction and

Interestingly, not all grapes burn the same, with some varieties more susceptible than others.

In grapes, we know that the relationship between sun exposure and berry temperature is important to berry metabolism, composition, and by extension, wine quality. Previous research tells us that in a number of red wine grape cultivars, shaded fruit tends to have poor color at harvest, lower concentrations of anthocyanins (a class of pigments in the berry skins) and soluble solids or sugars, and higher levels of titratable acidity than sunlit fruit, all leading to a lesser-quality wine.

sunburn, as well as determining how altitude affects the degree of sunburn,” Dr Gambetta said. Experiments in vineyards in Orange are looking at the effect of removing leaves at different times on Chardonnay berries. The first group in the experiment is a control group where leaves are not removed at all. A second group is where leaves were removed at the end of flowering in December while a third group of vines had leaves removed at véraison (mid-January), when the sun was at its fiercest and the grapes at their most vulnerable. “The aim of the research is to develop a set of guidelines for growers to reduce the impact of sunburn damage to their grapes,” Dr Gambetta said. Wine Australia’s General Manager Research, Development and Extension Dr Liz Waters said the research, while focussed on New South Wales, had much broader implications as sunburn was a potential problem in a number of regions. The focus of this research through Wine Australia’s Incubator Initiative was developed from the priorities identified by Wine Australia’s Regional Program partners in NSW to support growers in finding locally tested solutions to industry problems. With over 30 vineyards in the sun baked Central West region, many growers are keenly awaiting Dr Gambetta’s findings. bml

ven in a town brimming with history, Alloway Bank stands out as of Bathurst’s most important – and impressive, colonial homes. Built almost 200 years ago by convict labour, it’s a stately 22 sion surrounded by old world gardens g Mount Panorama, Bathurst CBD and g a period of neglect several decades ajestic home has been fully restored and features modern bathrooms and a stateof-the-art kitchen while retaining much of its colonial character. The house comes with an interesting history. It was originally part of a 2,000-acre grant and was finished in 1829 by Captain John Piper of Point Piper, Sydney, whose previous homes include Vaucluse House in Sydney. He moved to Bathurst after running into debt in Sydney but was forced to sell Alloway Bank just over ten years later when he again found himself with perilous finances. In the early 1870s, a new 2 storey front was added to the house. Today the present laundry, kitchen (kitchen wing), the two rooms which make up the bedroom downstairs, originally the “Strangers Room” and a storeroom, the bathroom (originally a bedroom), the office originally the servants waiting room and the cellar are all that remains of the Piper House. However, another cellar under the laundry was discovered in 1997 but was for some reason

full of dirt. Entry to this cellar, by way of a spiral staircase, is in the pump room behind the laundry. Interestingly, the small brick building at the back of the house was the original bathroom. The stables are also original and were built by Capt. Piper in 1827. They consist of 2 grooms’ quarters on either end, the Coach House, the tack room, 13 cobblestoned stables, and a stallion stable plus a brick-lined well. Today, this rare and unique property offers an ideal blend of modern luxury and historical significance. Currently owned by the same family since 1996, the property is again coming onto the market and would make a unique reception venue, bed & breakfast accommodation or the perfect family home. One of the stand out features of the home is its majestic foyer. However, the 14-foot ceilings, massive verandahs, original cedar work and doors, tallowwood floorboards and period locks are also outstanding details from a bygone era. In addition, the original servants’ stairs still remain and are in use to this day. Many people still alive in Bathurst fondly remember the famous tennis parties and functions which were often held at Alloway Bank. Today the house boasts several huge living & dining areas each with original beautifully designed working fireplaces. The family size country kitchen features new Bosch appliances, an AGA fuel stove and a central island bar, perfect for family breakfasts.

The 2 levels, 22 room home currently features 6 large bedrooms, 2 of which are currently used as a private library and formal dining room. There are 3 modern bathrooms plus a separate toilet. The large top level features a family room with the option to create 2 more bedrooms as well. The lower level also features a large walk-in linen and storage room plus a huge underground wine cellar. An adjacent casual dining area and sunroom provide sunny Northwest panoramic views of the scenic tree-studded landscape and Mt Rankin. This property is perfectly positioned with breathtaking, uninterrupted views to Mount Panorama and Oberon. There is ample bore and rainwater storage on site with irrigation for the numerous paddocks and gardens. There is garaging for 6 cars plus a large workshop. Outside the house many more original features remain, including the stable complex with carriage house, tack room, fourteen stalls, cobblestone floors & hay racks built in 1827 with mud mortar and pegged joinery. In addition to the 2 Grooms’ cottages on either end of the stables, the property also has two, separate 3-bedroom cottages, perfect for additional income or for the extended family.” bml To arrange an inspection or find out any further information please contact Tom Clyburn at Century 21 Bathurst on 0481 844 412.

ocated on the stunning Jamieson Valley Escarpment, this new home build was not without it’s challenges; but challenges are what we at Against the Grain Building & Renovating thrive on and we were thrilled to be awarded the contract in 2016. The project included the demolition of the existing home and rebuilding within the same footprint to preserve the heritage gardens and ironstone walls. The vision for this home was to be single storey to the street and garden, though twostorey to the remarkable view to the south. Exterior walls include bagged concrete blockwork on lower levels to visually match the insulated rammed earth walls on the upper main level. Expansive double-glazing and roof windows are featured universally for natural illumination and passive solar design. The feature centre-piece of this home is the open-plan living area with vaulted Victorian Ash lined ceiling and exposed trusses of Brushbox and stainless steel. The interior has been fitted out with an abundance of Australian hardwoods: Victorian Ash, Brushbox, Ironbark, Forest Red Gum and Murray River Redgum which all work beautifully with the rammed earth walls. This luxurious home sits comfortably in it’s bush setting – whilst providing comfort, warmth and beauty - from the inside out. In 2018 this home was shortlisted for the HIA NSW Custom Home Build Award and the Timber Design Awards for Residential Interior Fitout – Excellence in Timber Design. Heading to the festival from their rustic cider shed at Bilpin, Shane McLaughlin - cider maker, will be bringing their full range of alcoholic ciders as well as their non-alcoholic apple cider especially popular with kids. You’ll be able to taste and take home the Hillbilly version of champagne - the Vintage cider. It’s fermented in French oak inspired by Shane’s time spent in Normandy. Or try the Scrumpy cider – a nod to work he did in Somerset. A cloudy style made from heritage cider apples. The whole range has won plenty of accolades including silver in the UK’s International cider challenge and ‘Best in class three times in the Australian cider awards. One ‘Best in class’ award was for the ‘Sweet Julie Cider’ – the only cider in the world made from the Julie apple. This chance seedling apple was discovered growing locally at Shields orchard, Bilpin and is a brand new breed. FOOD CRUNCHY SPRING VEGGIE GRAIN BOWL

Opposite page 1 cup cooked quinoa or brown rice 3 asparagus spears, shaved ½ cup grated carrot ½ small watermelon radish, thinly sliced with a mandoline ⅔ cup shredded Poached Chicken (page 196; optional) ⅔ cup thinly sliced bok choy ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves Miso-Ginger Dressing (page 188) About 1 tablespoon coconut aminos About 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil Divide the quinoa between two bowls. Top each with half the asparagus, carrot, radish, chicken, and bok choy. Garnish with the

cilantro and pour over the miso dressing. Drizzle with the coconut aminos and sesame oil and serve.

APRICOT, CASHEW & COCONUT TRUFFLES ½ cup dried apricots ½ cup raw cashews ½ cup unsweetened shredded coconut Zest of 1 lime A pinch of flaky sea salt 1 tablespoon water

Combine all the ingredients in a food processor and process until the mixture is smooth and forms a ball around the processor blade (this may take a while). Using wet hands, roll the mixture into 12 tablespoon-sized balls, setting them on a plate as you work. Let set in the fridge until ready to eat.

HALIBUT EN PAPILLOTE WITH LEMON, MUSHROOMS & TOASTED SESAME OIL

2 medium shiitake, oyster, or maitake mushrooms, thinly sliced 2 (6-ounce) halibut fillets, skin removed Flaky sea salt and cracked black pepper ½ teaspoon grated lemon zest ½ teaspoon grated fresh ginger 2 scallions, thinly sliced 1 teaspoon coconut aminos ½ teaspoon toasted sesame oil, plus more for drizzling 4 lemon slices Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lay out two 9x11-inch sheets of parchment paper on a flat surface. Place the sliced mushrooms in

the lower third of each parchment sheet. Season the halibut fillets generously with salt and pepper and place them on top of the mushrooms. Divide the lemon zest, ginger, scallions, coconut aminos, sesame oil, and lemon slices evenly between the fillets. Fold the top half of the parchment paper over the fish to make a rectangle. Starting on one side, crimp the edges together tightly so no liquid can escape and the contents are completely enclosed. Repeat with the other two edges, then place the parcels on a baking sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fillets. Transfer the parcels to individual plates. Carefully cut open the parchment paper (the steam inside is hot) and serve.

fresh chilli, to serve (optional) Kecap manis, to serve, optional 1. Place the egg noodles into a heatproof bowl and cover them with boiling water. Leave them for 5 minutes, then drain well – pat dry with paper towel, if needed – and set aside. 2. Crack the eggs into a medium bowl and add the tamari. Whisk together well, then set aside. 3. Heat a small non-stick frying pan over medium–high heat and add half of the olive oil. Add the bacon, half of the spring onion and all of

the cabbage and zucchini. Add some freshly ground black pepper and a pinch of salt (the salt will help to draw out the liquid in the vegetables). 4. Fry gently until the vegetables are soft and the cabbage has wilted right down. The mixture should be fairly dry – this might take a few minutes. Spoon the cabbage mixture onto a plate and set aside. 5. Carefully wipe the pan out with paper towel and place it back on the heat. Add the remaining olive oil then pour in half the egg mixture. Cook for 1–2 minutes until

it’s starting to set around the edges and on top. Spoon half the cabbage mixture and half the egg noodles onto one side of the omelette, then gently fold the other half of the omelette over the filling. 6. Cook for another 20 seconds or so, then carefully flip the omelette over to cook the other side, if needed. 7. Transfer to a plate and serve topped with a pinch of fresh spring onion, a sprinkle of chilli flakes and a drizzle of kecap manis, if you like. Repeat with the remaining mixture to make the second omelette.

KEEP WARM WITH LOPI

here are 30 Lopi products available with countless design options to suit the décor of any home. The options and features are seemingly endless and overwhelming to many. Some people believe a fireplace is eplace no matter what design but that is not case, so how do you choose between them?

LOPI GAS FIREPLACES

Lopi gas fireplaces are ‘natural draft direct vent gas fireplaces’ meaning they naturally draw their oxygen supply from outside of the home and expel all the bi-product back outside again. This process means that the air quality in the home remains the same whilst not being reliant on fans to assist in the process. The Lopi ‘Premium Linear Range’ features GreenSmart 2 technology which includes a

Smart Thermostat mode that can modulate the flames up and down according to the temperature in the room. The beautiful accent lighting can be set to enhance the fireplace even when the flames are off. The Lopi ‘ProBuilder Series’ are price entry point linear gas fireplaces that do not compromise on Lopi’s renowned quality. The range features large viewing areas in a sleek linear style and beautiful flame presentation.

LOPI WOOD FIREPLACES

Lopi slow combustion wood heaters have been warming Australia’s homes for over 30 years and are not only built to last but to also perform. Each Lopi model heats large areas with some models featuring true overnight burn times of more than 12 hours and Hybrid-Fyre

Technology to enhance burn times and reduce emission levels whilst saving running costs. Many models feature the optional GreenStart ignition system. This system means you can start your wood fire at the touch of a button or even re-ignite the coals in the floor of the fire! Lopi wood heaters are available as freestanding or inbuilt models for existing chimneys but there is also the option of building one of the inbuilt models into a timber frame with the Zero Clearance Kit option. CONVERSATION STARTERS USE THESE TECHNIQUES TO BECOME A CONFIDENT PARTY GOER.

he last party you went to was a disaster. You skirted groups of people who were all looking like they were having the time of their lives. You wished you could be just like them. Don’t know how? Well here’s some pointers on how you can build your confidence before you get there. Follow this up with great conversation starters and you will be enjoying every party you go to. Remember good attitude, positive outlook as well as an armory of great conversation starters are all you need to make a good impression. The ability to attract friends like bees to honey comes from being a total package. Be on Your Best Physical Appearance This is commonsense advice. You cannot expect fellow guests and the party host to come anywhere near you with a ten-foot pole when you look and smell like an unwashed hobo. When you have the best conversation starters in the history of mankind, this is true. You will not

80

Blue Mountainslife

only be red-faced but you will also be getting red-hot looks of disdain coming from your fellow guests, which will make for plenty of awkward approaches on your part. Be on Your Best Mood. You should complement your good physical appearance with your good mood. It simply will not do to

come into a party in a bad mood, which was caused by something unrelated to the guests, the host and the purpose of the party itself. You cannot vent your ire, frustration and anger unto your fellow guests who are in the party to have a good time. Be as Early as Possible. The best conversation starters are just a start toward becoming accepted into a social group during parties but it is the best start. We suggest coming in early so that you will have an easier time approaching the few early birds and then making a good impression on them. Your party conversation starters are just the beginning. Once you have broken the ice its easy to listen and ask lots of questions. Crack jokes, tell anecdotes and ask openended questions of whoever is in front of you at the moment. Listen to what they have to say as well so that your basic conversation starters become the start of a more meaningful exchange of ideas.

THE DANGEROUS EFFECTS OF SITTING TOO LONG AT WORK.

i

t’s 11:49 AM and you’re on a roll. Typing, what feels like, a million words a minute, no one can stop you. Then it happens. It’s 11:50 AM and your smartwatch is telling you to stand. How many hours has it been since you’ve used your feet or since you’ve even taken your eyes off the screen? You can’t remember. Have you even had breakfast? Not saying you’ve ever done this, but in case you have, there are some things you might want to know about the effects of sitting too long before you decide to let 5 hours pass without moving.

WEIGHT GAIN

One of the most common effects of sitting too long is gaining weight. While you might be an exercise junkie, even if you work out an hour a day, for 7 days a week, if you sit for 7 hours at a time it will make all that gym time counterproductive. Even if it’s a lap around the room during a Netflix marathon, make sure to keep moving!

ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION

POOR POSTURE

Even though you might think you’re engaging your brain while writing, getting up and moving is the way to get your blood and oxygen pumping throughout your body and, most importantly, the brain. When you sit for long periods of time, you deprive your brain of important nutrients that it needs to function properly.

It should come as no surprise that sitting at a desk all day staring at a computer screen will destroy your perfect posture. You’ll start to hunch your back which leads to decreased mobility of your spine and plays a part in other pains you may experience through your neck and shoulders.

82

Blue Mountainslife

As Elle Woods said in Legally Blonde, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy” and this is true! When you spend all your time sitting, you miss out on the health and mood-boosting benefits that come with moving your body.

A DECREASE IN MENTAL HEALTH

HIGHER RISK OF CANCER

Why your risk of cancer increases with the amount of time you sit is not known, but there is a theory that it advances the production of insulin in your body, which encourages cell growth leading to the creation of tumours. When you participate in regular exercise, creates an antioxidant effect within your body that can help prevent certain diseases, cancer being one of these. Set a reminder on your phone every 30 minutes to get up and take a lap around your house or workspace. This will get the blood flowing and help energise you. You can also change up workspaces or utilise a counter where you can stand instead of being seated all day.

WEDDING PLANNER?

IT CAN BE AN EXPENSIVE EXERCISE BUT ONE THAT IS WORTH IT. s you begin planning your wedding, there can be confusion when it comes to budgeting, ordering specialised services, and choosing your vendors. There are so many variables, options, and price points to choose from, that the planning can quickly become overwhelming. Wedding planning should be fun, and a professional wedding planner’s expertise can really help you make sense of everything. This article will help you answer the question “ Should you hire a wedding planner? ” Many people never even consider hiring a wedding planner. You might view this service as a luxury you can’t afford, or you may simply think you don’t need one. The truth is, a wedding planner can fit into most budgets and will take a lot of stress off of you. Experienced in negotiating contracts with caterers, florists, photographers, and other vendors, a wedding planner will not only save you time, but can also help you save money

on your wedding. The wedding planner likely has many contacts and knows which vendors provide the best bang for your buck. They can even take advantage of discounts that you might be unaware of, and will ensure that you avoid costly mistakes. The average wedding can take over two hundred hours to plan. With full time jobs, family, friends, and other obligations, many

Planning a wedding can be a stressful undertaking, but it’s also a lot of fun.

people simply don’t have the time it takes to plan such a massive affair. Wedding planners may charge by the hour, flat rate, or a percentage of your total wedding budget. Be sure to ask how you will be charged. I personally recommend asking for a flat rate. That way you know exactly what you’re paying up-front. Many venues will have their own wedding planners, and their fee is included in the cost of renting the venue. This is also a great option because these planners are familiar with the space and the local vendors. Planning a wedding can be a stressful undertaking, but it’s also a lot of fun. Many brides enjoy planning their own wedding. If you’re someone who is organised and likes to plan parties or other events, you probably don’t need to hire a wedding planner. However, if you’re someone who is intimidated by making big decisions and dealing with lots of different people, hiring a wedding planner may be the best decision you make.

COPING WITH GRIEF

t

he hardest part of death is not the dying but the living. Those who have loved the deceased are encouraged, no expected, to somehow pull themselves together and get on with their lives. The merry-goround that we call our daily life might slow its speed or revolutions for a moment or two but then moves on even faster without the anchor of the loved one. An American poet, adored in her time but now forgotten, wrote these immortal words more than 75 years ago.

TO ONE IN SORROW Let me come in where you are weeping, friend, And let me take your hand. I, who have known a sorrow such as yours, can understand. Let me come in - I would be very still beside you in your grief; I would not bid you cease your weeping, friend, Tears bring relief. Let me come in - and hold your hand, For I have known a sorrow such as yours, And understand. Grace Noll Crowell Coping with the loss of someone you love is one of life’s biggest challenges. Often, the pain of loss can feel overwhelming. You may experience all kinds of difficult and unexpected emotions, from shock or anger to disbelief, guilt, and profound sadness. The pain of grief

can also disrupt your physical health, making it difficult to sleep, eat, or even think straight. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. But your family, your friends, your clergy, can all help you ease your sadness and help you come to terms with your loss, find new meaning, and move on with your life. Your Memorial Ceremony Director is part and parcel of your closest advisors when death is at hand. The staff at TR Brownjohn Memorial Home are trained to help lessen the pain of loss. Grief is a natural response to loss. It’s the emotional suffering you feel when someone you love is taken away. The more significant the loss, the more intense your grief will be. Inevitably, the grieving process takes time. Healing happens gradually; it can’t be forced or hurried—and there is no “normal” timetable for grieving. Some people start to feel better in weeks or months. For others, the grieving process is measured in years. Whatever your grief experience, it’s important to be patient with yourself and allow the process to naturally unfold.

Feeling sad, frightened, or lonely is a normal reaction to loss. Crying doesn’t mean you are weak. You don’t need to “protect” your family or friends by putting on a brave front. Showing your true feelings can help them and you. There is no specific time frame for grieving. How long it takes differs from person to person. The key element in overcoming grief from a loss is to have face to face support from people who love you. While sharing your loss can make the burden of grief easier to carry, that doesn’t mean that every time you interact with friends and family, you need to talk about your loss. Comfort can also come from just being around others who care about you. The key is not to isolate yourself. We at TR Brownjohn Memorial Home have jointly decades of experience in helping our clients cope and overcome their loss. As Thomas Brownjohn, principal says, It’s time we had a talk. When you call, you will always talk to Tom personally. He’s at: 02 4782 2613 or in the Memorial Home, 73A Lurline Road, Katoomba. Offices are also in Springwood and Lithgow.

THE LATEST VOLVO MODEL KEEPS ITS REPUTATION INTACT. olvo will be releasing the all-new S60 model at the end of the year. However, that hasn’t stopped the Swedish company from testing out a whole host of safety features. In Europe, the new Volvo S60 sedan received the maximum tar rating in their 2018 EuroNCAP safety tests, continuing a fivetreak for the Volvo line-up. The result underlines Volvo Cars’ reputation for consistently putting some of the safest cars available on the road. All tested Volvo models currently on sale offer five-star-rated safety technology. The 2018 Euro NCAP testing regime was the toughest ever, with new and more demanding challenges on safety technology, including cyclist detection with auto-brake and emergency lane keeping systems. The S60 is among the safest cars tested under the new regime. “This result proves that Volvo Cars continues to be an industry leader in safety, constantly pushing the envelope in advancing new technology,” says Malin Ekholm, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “No matter which Volvo you choose, you can always be sure that you and your loved ones travel in one of the safest cars on the market.” The 60 model share Volvo Cars’ own Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform and safety technology with their larger sibling XC60 and the top-of-the-line 90 series cars. Volvo Cars’ active safety package City Safety with Autobrake technology comes as standard on all Volvos. As a world-first on the S60 and V60, City Safety now also engages auto braking to mitigate oncoming collisions. City Safety is still the only safety system on the market to help recognise pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. Also in a first for the company, the dynamic S60 is the first Volvo car to be sold without a diesel offering, signalling the company’s industryleading commitment to electrification and a long-term future beyond the traditional combustion engine. POETRY SLAM

An enthusiastic crowd gathered at Lithgow Library to hear 11 local poets and wordsmiths perform at this year’s Seniors Festival Poetry Slam. Other performers spoke about things such as working in the coal mines, political correctness, becoming older, growing up, and guinea pigs. To set the tone for the afternoon, Master of ceremonies Sophie Meredith, herself a poet and published author, impressed the audience with her energy and versatility as she opened the slam and welcomed the audience.
