EDITOR’SNOTE
Personal space When I was planning to furnish my home, I remember that I took quite a considerable amount of time thinking about what I wanted for my bedroom and bathroom. I consider these two spaces my inner sanctums – private zones where I can not only rest but also recharge and rejuvenate. For most homeowners, dreaming up the ideal bedroom is one of the most important and perhaps fun parts of a renovation. This space is where you spend quite a number of hours each day, so creating a bedroom that offers the utmost comfort is key. Other than decking out the bedroom with the right bedding, there are other crucial elements to think of – colour schemes to induce calm, storage solutions to keep things uncluttered and fixtures like air-conditioner and lighting to keep it comfortable. Likewise, the bathroom is a space that gets a lot of attention during a renovation because this is a functional space that you will use everyday. Not only that,
creating a relaxing bathroom can contribute to a sense of wellbeing as you go about your daily grooming regime. For these reasons, we have decided to dedicate this issue of SquareRooms to the bedroom and bathroom. From dreamy bedroom ideas to adopt (page 29) and fabulous furnishings and accessories to buy (page 36) to a practical guide on how to save on your bathroom renovation (page 44), we have packed some useful information to help you create your perfect private oasis. Also in this issue is a handy article on the Open Electricity Market (OEM). Should you change energy providers? How do you go about it? And how much can you save? We answer all your questions and more about this new utility service on page 26. We hope you will pick up a few good and practical ideas and inspiration in this issue. Happy reading!

MAKE A SPLASH Revolutionise your daily shower experience with this new shower spray mode from hansgrohe
A
s the bathroom is a feel-good oasis where you can switch off the outside noise and recuperate from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it should only make sense that you treat yourself to a truly indulgent showering experience. That’s where hansgrohe comes in. The award-winning bathroom fixtures brand is giving the term “bringing nature into your home” a whole new meaning with their latest development, the PowderRain spray. Drawing inspiration from the rainforest’s warm and misty droplets, this highly advanced spray mode – currently featured on the brand’s new Raindance Select S showerheads – feels like summer rain. Instead of a single spray outlet, PowderRain utilises 6 fine openings that transform a stream of water into thousands of micro-sized droplets, resulting in a sensual showering experience that feels as though you
were standing right under the gentle rain of a tropical forest. And because these droplets are so light, they fall gently on the skin without bouncing off. What this means is that splashing is greatly reduced, which translates to less clean-up in the shower area.
ADDRESS: HANSGROHE AQUADEMIE, 69 MOHAMED SULTAN ROAD, SINGAPORE 239015 www.hansgrohe.com.sg/PowderRain I www.facebook.com/hansgrohe
As if all that wasn’t good enough, the experts over at the German brand’s sound laboratory have managed to reduce splashing sounds in the PowderRain spray by about 20% as compared to the Rain spray mode of the hansgrohe Raindance Select S 120 P handshower. This means that showers now will be as quiet as a whisper, effectively carving out an overall experience of pure relaxation during your daily body care routine. In order to cater to all housing situations of the local consumer market, available hansgrohe product ranges that feature PowderRain include overhead and handheld showers. This way, the perfect shower experience can be achieved in any bathroom, regardless of installation requirements. So bring the beauty of water into your private sanctuary, and immerse yourself in true luxury with PowderRain.

EVOLUTION IN DESIGN The Fragranite sinks made by Franke combine contemporary aesthetics with robust functionality
an uncomplicated mounting procedure, the range includes a stylish drainer board, strainer bowl and waste kit to complete the sink to help organise the flow of food preparation. Forget the commonly seen stainless steel fixtures – these chic Fragranite sinks offer both style and function when integrated into kitchens. Its colour palette has also expanded to include Oatmeal, Graphite and Stone Grey, in addition to the highly popular Polar White and Onyx. These colours cannot be scraped off the surface of the sturdy Fragranite – the tones were heated onto the material at such a high temperature that they will never fade. Looks aside, the sink is able to withstand sustained wear and tear. This is because the quartz in its composite makes it virtually impossible to damage through impact or scratches. Each sink is also engineered with reinforced rails to keep the basin in shape. On the top, the surface can withstand high temperatures of up to 280°C, perfect for when one is whipping up an elaborate feast. In the kitchen, hygiene is of the utmost importance – that is why Franke teamed up with leading antimicrobial treatments specialist Sanitized to treat its Fragranite sinks. While bacteria can multiply every 20 minutes on an unprotected surface, Sanitized’s treatment helps to reduce the growth by 99 per cent. This keeps the food prep area safe for home chefs to work on without having to perform a thorough clean after every cook. A layer of protection that once again gels with the longevity of the sink – the Fragranite range made by Franke is most definitely made to endure. DEUTSCH Say “hallo” to some authentic contemporary German cuisine TEXT Jasmine Ong PHOTOS The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore
N
estled in Singapore’s civic and cultural district sits a restored infrastructure that has since transformed into a beautifully conserved hotel, The Capitol Kempinski Hotel. Combining both modern design and bespoke hospitality, the hotel also houses a new exquisite dining destination that serves up authentic contemporary German cuisine. Situated at the Arcade, Frieda draws inspiration for its namesake from Kempinski founder, Berthold Kempinski’s daughter, who shares the same name. Uniquely designed to reflect the 19th century heritage while maintaining the very embodiment of hospitality, the restaurant creates a cosy experience where guests can continue to feel a sense of belonging despite the miles they may have travelled. For the comfort of diners, Frieda offers three distinct dining spaces that cater to an all-rounded ambience. Inspired by Berlin’s urban style, Frieda’s Day Bar sits right at the heart of the restaurant, which is perfect for enjoying a casual evening
meal with a pint of ice-cold German beer. Offering up a more intimate setting is Frieda’s Dining Room, and the enchanting, botanicalthemed Frieda’s Garden, which is reminiscent of a German home. The restaurant’s menu offers a reinterpretation of traditional German cuisine with a touch of Austrian influence. You can start with either a Cold Cut Platter ($19) with gruyere cheese, mixed pickles, obatzda, red radish and pretzel; or a Frieda’s Salad ($15) that is served with seasonal organic lettuce, cherry tomatoes, brined beetroot and pumpkin seeds with an optional add-
on of goat cheese caramelized with honey ($10). If you prefer something heavier, opt for the Traditional Beef Broth with Semolina Dumplings and Pancake ($16), or the Grossmutter’s Kartoffelsuppe ($12), which is a warm potato and leek soup.
Viennese apple fritters
Moving onto the mains, diners can look forward to the traditional Wiener Schnitzel ($37) which is a breaded veal cutlet that has been pan-fried to perfection and served with potato salad and a refreshing Gurkensalat made up of thinly sliced cucumbers, sour cream and aromatic dill and parsley. Vegetarian options are also available and includes the Pretzel Dumplings ($27) that comes with creamy mushroom ragout and scallions. Lastly, finish off your meal on a sweet note with the semolina pudding which features a tart cherry compote named Griessflammerie ($12), or the Bismarck ($12), a fluffy, crispy pancake served with a drizzle of maple syrup, or the Viennese Apple Fritters ($12) which comprises slices of apples topped with cinnamon and dusted with granulated sugar.

NICOLAS ROCHE, creative director at Roche Bobois We speak to the architect and secondgeneration furniture maker about creating extraordinary pieces for the home INTERVIEW Jolene Limuco PHOTOS Roche Bobois
PRESENT PURPOSE Growing up in a family of furniture dealers, Nicolas learnt from an early age to appreciate contemporary design.
HOW HAS YOUR ARCHITECTURE BACKGROUND INFLUENCED YOUR ROLE AS CREATIVE DIRECTOR AT ROCHE BOBOIS? As an architect
HIDDEN GEM The Wonder cabinet that Nicolas created in collaboration with Marcel Wanders opens to reveal a whole new world inside.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE ROCHE BOBOIS DNA? What we try to do at Roche Bobois is
you learn about proportion and about the relationships between different elements. You also learn about space, light and function. So I think when it comes to dealing with volume, materials and functionality, it helps a lot when it comes to making furniture. The only difference is when you’re an architect you’re working with a direct customer. When you are working for a commercial company you don’t know the customers. So it’s quite difficult to try to imagine who are the people you are working for and trying to figure out their needs. WHY DOES ROCHE BOBOIS COLLABORATE WITH FASHION DESIGNERS? We love to work with
to give homeowners something different than our competitors. For instance, Italian furniture companies have a very international style but we like to take risks and present extraordinary pieces of design. We also like to combine unusual materials and contemporary design with old techniques to create pieces that you won’t be able to find elsewhere.

TELL US MORE ABOUT THE GLOBE TROTTER COLLECTION CREATED IN COLLABORATION WITH MARCEL WANDERS. The sense of the collection is
about travel and discovering different cultures. It’s based on Marcel’s fascination with explorers, like the guy who first took the submarine to discover life under water. It’s about people who want to explore the unknown. These people, to him, are very fascinating. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE FROM THAT PARTICULAR COLLECTION? The most interesting
piece for me is the Wonder cabinet. It is this square cabinet with a round window display in the centre. Seen from outside it already has some sort of mystery and when you open the cabinet, it becomes extraordinary – you find the prints of all the illustrations created just for the collection within. It’s another world that opens to you when you open the doors.
WHAT IS GOOD DESIGN TO YOU? I remember
that when I was growing up we had a device from the German company Braun. It was a vinyl disc player and a radio. I loved this object. At the time, it was super modern. For me as a teenager, it was a representation of what design should be – very simple, modernist and industrial.
fashion designers because they are very creative people. If you take Kenzo Takada, he is inspired by Japanese culture and traditional Noh theatre costumes. These are part of his imagination and we like to draw his mentality and his universe into ours. In France, we are known as a country for fashion. So for us it’s also quite helpful to be part of this movement in order to promote this French art de vivre that we are known for.

Level up your sound system with Musica Boutique’s range of high-end and niche audio equipment TEXT Jolene Limuco PHOTOS Musica Boutique
O
ne of the big-ticket items homeowners have to purchase for their homes is the entertainment system. And with the wide array of choices available these days, choosing the ideal one can be overwhelming. While one can read up on recommendations online, there is no denying that trying them out in person before buying is the best way to find the perfect system for your preferences and budget. Recognising that Singaporean’s taste for high-tech audio equipment and technical know-how is becoming more and more sophisticated, home-grown IT products and services provider Challenger Technologies recently opened up a new-to-market store called Musica Boutique. Designed as a one-stop shop for audiophiles, this music studio-like store carries niche audio brands like Astell & Kern, Audeze and Beyerdynamic alongside high-end audio equipment makers like Bang & Olufsen, Bose and KEF. The idea, according to Challenger Technologies’ Chief Marketing Officer, Loo Pei Fen, is to allow audio enthusiasts and
professionals to test out quality sound equipment across multiple brands. Spreading over 2,000 square feet, the boutique located on the top-most floor of ION Orchard was designed to resemble a gallery. Rather than intimidating, the shop floor exudes an inviting and conducive ambience for shoppers to explore and test out audio products on display. Everything in the store can be hooked up to your mobile device to allow you to play your favourite tunes or sound effects on site. Smack in the heart of the store is a display called “The Cage” where shoppers can get a first-hand feel of portable players that range from on-ear headphones to high-resolution digital audio players. You’re invited to sit down and take your time to test out the selection on offer. Other than the central display, the boutique houses dedicated spaces for audio equipment brands so that shoppers can have a quick overview of what is on offer. Beginning with well-known favourites like Bang & Olufsen, Bose and Sonos, the store leads in to more niche brands like KEF and French brand Focal’s statement-making speakers displayed in a home-like mock up. Also at the back of the store is a soundproof room that lets you try out audio equipment in an optimal environment. Whether it is a sound system or a portable player, you can bring any of the audio equipment from the store here to put them to the ultimate test.
INSIDE STORY Musica Boutique is the first dedicated audio boutique to offer multiple high-end and niche audio brands in one address. All audio equipment displayed at the store can be synced with shoppers’ personal devices for testing.

WITH THE CHANGES TO THE ELECTRICITY MARKET, CONSUMERS CAN HAVE THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE THE PRICE PLANS THAT SUIT THEIR NEEDS. GET THE LOWDOWN ON THE OPEN ELECTRICITY MARKET HERE TEXT Rossara Jamil
In April 2018, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) piloted the Open Electricity Market (OEM) for business accounts and households in Jurong. The OEM began as an effort to introduce competitive pricing and innovation for the benefit of consumers by liberalising the retail power market. Consumers can now have the retailer and price plan of your choice, much like buying your mobile phone or broadband plans. Following the pilot test, the OEM will be made available to consumers across Singapore from November 2018. The rollout is made in stages according to zones:

The freedom to choose is important as it allows you to find a electricity plan that caters to your needs. To date, there are 13 retailers. Consumers can choose between a Fixed Price Plan, where you pay a fixed rate during the contract period, or a Discount Off the Regulated Tariff Plan. The latter means that the rate you pay is pegged to the regulated tariffs, which changes every three months. Whether the tariff increases or decreases, you will receive a fixed discount off it. Some retailers offer 14 per cent off while others might go as high as 25 per cent during the contract period. Why are there electricity retailers? In Singapore, electricity is produced by various power plants. Every 30 minutes, power generators bid for contracts to produce and sell indicated quantities of power on the wholesale electricity market, from which retailers will buy bulk to provide for their customers. Because the electricity is then distributed across Singapore on the SP Groupoperated national power grid, consumers do not have to worry about reliability and service interruptions.
FAQ
With the sudden increase in options, all of this can sound confusing and overwhelming. Here are some commonly asked questions about the OEM:
IS SWITCHING COMPULSORY? Switching is not compulsory. Your electricity will continue to be provided by SP Group if you choose not to switch. There is also no deadline for the switchover, so you can take the time to understand and compare the various price plans. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MY CONTRACT ENDS? The plans come with durations of 6-, 12or 24-month contracts. The retailer will inform you at least 10 business days before expiration. You can either re-contract with your retailer, switch to a new retailer or switch back to SP Group. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MAKING THE SWITCH? The main benefit is the savings you’ll gain on your electricity bills. With the opening up of the electricity market, retailers are also bound to throw in perks and freebies. That said, be sure to understand the terms and conditions before signing up.
HOW MUCH CAN I SAVE FROM MAKING THE SWITCH? Following the soft launch in Jurong, EMA has indicated that consumers who switched saw an average drop of 20 per cent in their bills compared to the regulated tariff. Consumers can have savings of up to 30 per cent. AM I ELIGIBLE? The OEM is available nationwide, but will be offered in phases according to four geographical zones. IS A FIXED PRICE PLAN OR DISCOUNT OFF THE REGULATED TARIFF PLAN BETTER FOR ME? It depends. Fixed Price Plans offer you the surety of the same rate every month, while you will be subject to the fluctuations of the rates with the Discount Off the Regulated Tariff Plan. With the Fixed Price Plans, the rate could be higher or lower than the regulated tariff from quarter to quarter.

WA S H B A S I N It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the variety of sinks in store. They come in many different materials, shapes and style. But remember, a wash basin is basically a vessel that aids in the act of hand or face washing. Practicality is without a doubt a priority when procuring one. On the material front, a reliable ceramic sink does the job well and is affordable to boot.
S H OW E R F I X T U R E A N D FAU C E T The fact is no bathroom is able to function properly without key hardware such as shower heads and faucets in place. As the workhorses in this utilitarian space, these fixtures are subject to prolonged and regular usage. Items that are poorly constructed are flimsy and tend to leak and loosen with use, while those made of inferior finishes are likely to chip off over time. Their short lifespan will therefore end up costing you more in the long run. With quality, you will be assured a product that delivers and is built to last. Our advice? Procure good quality fixtures as they tend to fare better against daily wear and tear. This makes the acquisition a worthwhile investment indeed.
LIGHTING In a place where a lot of activities happen every single day, a well-lit setting is essential. Apart from brightening your bath space with general overhead lighting, consider other spots to illuminate including above and around the vanity. This enables light to evenly filter in and not cast shadows on your visage, giving you a better view of what you’re doing. The result: spoton stubble or perfectly applied eye makeup, anyone? No need to shell out on fancy fixtures – we urge you to go for basics.

WAT E R C L O S E T From seat warmers to self-cleaning functions, the innovative features that are built into the toilets of today are undeniably remarkable. But novelty aside, what users are essentially looking for in a bowl is a unit that properly serves the task that it’s meant for. If you’ve got the dough, go for a wall-hung water closet. If not, a standard good quality seat does the trick.
Avoid fancy gizmos that are outfitted with a dozen features that are unnecessary – plan your purchase prudently and only seek products that fit your needs.

MATERIAL WORLD SAVE
SPLURGE C O U N T E RTO P S In one of the most frequently visited rooms at home, the countertop bears the brunt of relentless splashes, spills from makeup and cleaning products, as well as high humidity day after day. This is why the material that you choose to serve as a sinktop needs to be resilient enough to take on these elements. There is a profusion of surfaces available from the premium to the cost-effective, but low-budget options like laminates tend to warp over time, while natural stones such as marble demand constant attention. Quartz countertops win our vote for offering both beauty and brawn – plus, it boasts a price tag that’s not unreasonable for the superb quality that you get. By undergoing specific processes down the assembly line, this engineered stone, as a result, becomes dense and nonporous. This equips it a durability that rivals granite as well as outstanding waterproof properties that make it fitting for splatter-prone zones. A generous selection of colours means owners will face zero issues trying to sift out one that complements their interior’s aesthetics.

F L O O R A N D WA L L S U R FAC E S As they cover a large expanse of the bathroom, surfaces are imperative in setting the mood and look in this part of home. Floors especially face constant impact in this high traffic area, so they need to be tough as well. Fortunately, it’s easy to create a big impact with little cost – all thanks to tiles the likes of porcelain and ceramic. They come in a versatile mix of design, from concrete-effect and woodgrained patterns to colourful Peranakan motifs. You could even replicate a high-end luxury look for less with metallic or marble inspired surfaces.

SPACE PLAN SAVE S TO R AG E Just like any part of the domicile, storage is indispensable in keeping the area free of clutter. Organising aids such as wallmounted cubbies or tall shelf units are great for stashing towels and toiletries, but in a room that is short on square footage, built-in cabinetry is better at making sure this limited plot of space is fully maximised. However, you don’t have to add a custom-built medicine cabinet in your bathroom, as there are more affordable store-bought options available.
SPLURGE G L A S S S H OW E R E N C L O S U R E If your decision to equip the bath area with a glass shower partition or door is still not set in stone, take heed that the merits of a well-constructed shower enclosure truly surpass that of the flimsy curtain. As the panel keeps splashes constrained within the shower, the rest of the space remains dry as a wick. This thus heightens the safety level in this water-prone zone particularly during the morning rush or if your family includes little ones.

CONCRETE PLANS Bare cement bathroom walls are a cost-saving alternative. They may not be for everyone, but this versatile finish can present a vibe that ranges from rustic to edgy. Pair them with wood and hexagon tiles for a bohemian vibe. Or, as interior design firm Free Space Intent, splashes of bright colour give the walls a trendy, nostalgic atmosphere.

Small-format tiles reduce waste, therefore, cost if you are budget conscious.
DRAWING ATTENTION Tiles may be a staple of the bathroom, but with the wide array of options these days, they offer room for creativity. The sink area is perfect as an accent wall if it is directly across the door. An alternative is the shower area. Consider the colours of bathware, countertop and cabinets. Then explore colours that contrast or complement for the accent wall.

NO WALLFLOWER Compared to the typical bathroom, powder rooms are subject to less moisture and heat, which can cause wallpaper to peel. Instead of using tiles, consider using wallpaper. The colours and patterns of wallpaper designs are limitless. Vinyl wallpapers are recommended. Ask your supplier for washable wallpapers.

QUARTZ COUP Why not go an extra step and custom the vanity area with the same finish? With the quartz material from Cosentino, you can deck the walls, counter and even the sink with the same finish for a seamless look. Resistant to cracks and stains, quartz is a tough, non-porous material ideal for the bathroom.
Ask for the anti-slip rating of the tiles. On a scale of R9 to R13, a rating of R11 or R12 is ideal for the bathroom.
Floors IMAGE COURTESY OF HAFARY
The flooring of the bathroom is subject to water every day. Safety is the top priority, so avoid tiles that are polished, glossy or smooth.
HEART OF STONE Inspired by cobblestones and weathered paths, these tiles bring a rustic charm to the bathroom. Versatile and timeless, they are perfect for bathrooms inspired by villas from Tuscany to Bali. Note that these are large-format tiles, which would work better with a bigger floor area.

MAKE A PATTERN Don’t shy away from patterned floor tiles! However, avoid crowding the small space with clashing patterns. Make the bathroom floor the centre of attention with stunning patterns and tessellations and keep the walls bare. Be sure that the tiles are suitable for flooring, which are made to withstand foot traffic.
LOOKING LIKE TIMBER With wood-like tiles, you get the instant look of warmth that wood brings. These days, such tiles also come with life-like texture. They are perfect for the bathroom floor, where texture helps provide some grip. Wood patterns are also versatile and easy to match with showy wall tiles. Long plank-like tiles can help enhance the sense of space.

ay windows are something many homeowners love to hate. After all, these sometimes unasked-for fixtures seem to only take up precious floor area and offer little else in return. However, with a little creativity, bay windows can actually turn from restricting features of a home into beautiful space-enhancers. Case in point: this three-bedroom resale condominium unit designed by local interior design studio akiHAUS. Before addressing the bay windows, the design team – comprising Lawrence Puah, Ash Ashiqin and Jenny Phumthida – had to figure out what design theme the owners wanted for their home. “They settled on a mix of resort and hotel design sensibilities,” Lawrence recalls, “This

explains the white and wood tones in the outer communal areas, which give the shared spaces a more breezy and airy vibe. Conversely, linenlike laminates were used in the bedrooms for a touch of softness, while the darker shades in the bathrooms add luxe and elegance.” At the front of the home is an angled walkway. Besides just being a path into the inner sanctums of the home however, the corridor was made more functional with the installation of fullheight storage units. In addition, recessed niches embedded within serve a number of purposes. For example, the vertical niche at the front not only serves as a display shelf for the homeowners’
personal knick-knacks, the mirror backing also lets the owners check themselves out one final time before leaving the home. Further into the home, a floor-to-ceiling wooden slatted screen-cum-television wall comes into view, which separates the living from the dining and kitchen spaces. By doing so, each section of the home is offered privacy but they don’t feel closed off from each other as the space between each individual slat creates a seethrough effect. As the footprint of the apartment is relatively small, the designers refrained from tacking on built-ins to the living room’s walls. Instead, loose

furnishings were favoured, such as a luxurious King Living leather sofa and the marble-topped coffee table. The lightness of the living area also bode well for the transition into the balcony. Being on the 35th floor, the unit has unobstructed views. As such, a new timber deck as well as an astro turf was installed to provide the inhabitants a spot to enjoy the luscious greenery that dot the surrounding landscape. In the kitchen, the once closed-off utilitarian zone is now a free-flowing space thanks to the removal of partition walls. In its place, a Caesarstone quartz-topped bar counter lines the
kitchen entrance. “Kitchens are the heart of any home, and the counter serves as an informal gathering spot when the owners have guests over, Lawrence added. When it came to their private chambers, two bedrooms were combined to create a larger master boudoir. As there were bay windows present in all of the bedrooms, the designers decided that building over these fixtures was necessary to create a more practical interior without wasting precious floor area. As such, a custom bed frame was installed over the bay window, complete with a step that makes getting

On the left, a study table can be used for work, while a settee on the right provides a cosy spot to sit while enjoying the scenery. For storage purposes, both walls parallel to the bed were converted into full-height wardrobe units. Instead of using typical door knobs, however, the homeowners are able to access their clothes and accessories through recessed
grooves. “If you look closely, the wardrobe doors are clad in linen-like laminates, which are also the same materials used on most of the other surfaces of the room. So by tucking away the access to the wardrobes, what you get when you look at the boudoir overall is a visually cohesive and seamless experience, Lawrence explains. Past the sleeping area, the master en suite wows with the use of matte and high-gloss black marble-lookalike tiles, which inject the private sanctuary with an air of luxury. To carve out a dressing room for the female homeowner, the

The newly assigned floor area was also kitted out with a dressing table and a back-lit mirror to offer the perfect lighting for getting all made up. Next to the dressing area, what was once a standing shower next to a bay window has since been converted into a vanity, with the sink and pull-out drawers built atop the bay window. Another thing that sets the unit apart is the reconfiguration of the kitchen. “The homeowners wanted an island unit and a flexible semi-open concept for their cookspace,” the team explains. To achieve that, they took to hacking away the
boundary walls of the kitchen and also extended its floor area. Bi-fold doors in glass now stand between this area and the rest of the communal zones. and a light-coloured matte laminated finish. These sleek design details bring forth a cookspace that is brimming with sophistication. When the bi-fold doors are open, the boundaries between the kitchen and shared livingdining zones become blurred and this creates one big expansive area for the homeowners to dine, rest and entertain. The designers then relocated the dining area and it is now positioned next to the cleverly-concealed bomb shelter. They explain that
this location carves out a free-flowing floor plan; one that offers more room for the homeowners’ toddler son to run around. A cohesive balance was struck for the design details in the living area. The designers lined wood-effect laminated strips onto the TV feature wall and matched it with matte gold laminates. It is then fronted by a grey TV console with matte gold trimmings. Heading into the bedrooms, one of the common rooms has been converted into the walkin wardrobe. The designers teamed vinyl flooring and laminates with similar wood-effect patterns, resulting in a design continuity that establishes a warm yet spacious effect for a walk-in en suite.
To break up the monotony, the additions of a standalone vanity with tapered legs in a brass finish add a touch of glamour to the space. Another space that went through quite an extensive overhaul is the master bathroom. The designers replaced the existing sink counter with an extended built-in unit bearing a matching material palette of neutral-coloured laminates. The curvature of the counter also echoes the organic

his renovated resale HDB flat has an interesting story to tell, probably of the many travel adventures held by its homeowners – a married couple and their two teenage kids. They conveyed their desire to recreate the look of the boutique hotels they’ve had the pleasure of visiting to Director Cynthia Liau from The Inside Job, who
took charge of the overhaul. Cynthia explains, “The clients are frequent travellers who wanted a design that reminds them of all the quirky boutique hotels they’ve stayed at before.” The design brief was, therefore, to establish a design harmony of different eclectic styles. “This project takes on the challenge of blending different design languages successfully,” says

Cynthia, “This allows them to flow seamlessly from one zone to another, all in a seemingly hospitable setting.” For starters, they changed the floor plan of the original kitchen to accommodate a dry kitchen. “The original kitchen was larger,” says Cynthia. “We knocked away the boundary walls, pushed the kitchen walls backwards and created a dry kitchen for the homeowners’ entertainment needs.” Fronting the new dry kitchen is an island counter which serves as a perfect gathering point for friends and family.
With its striking asymmetrical form and a strong black-and-gold colour palette, this island counter naturally attracts guests with its alluring form and function. A black marble surface tops the counter and is embellished by gold chamfered recessed edges which carve out leg room for the bar stools. “The asymmetrical design accommodates the bar stools,” remarks Cynthia, “The shape of the counter essentially stands out on its own like an artistic accent of the house.” While this reconfigured dry kitchen makes a bold style statement, the living and dining zones

evoke a restful ambience for a balanced contrast. A light colour palette of warm neutrals fill the two connecting areas and this clean-lined backdrop allows the island unit to truly shine as the centrepiece of the home. Textured wallpaper was employed as the main feature wall treatment for the living area, which is nestled within a cosy nook of the floor plan. To
plush up the entire zone, a built-in settee was put into place next to the window and is aligned with the low-lying TV console and sofa for a seamless touch. This inviting setting can accommodate a good amount of guests, especially when the crowd spills over from the kitchen island counter. It’s another world in the wet kitchen which is dressed in a luxurious ensemble of blue and

To evoke a light-filled and spacious effect in this enclosed area, the light-coloured and lustrous combination of glazed wall tiles and quartz countertops works well against the cabinetry in a matte blue finish. The tiny detail of cup pull handles in a metallic finish adds in additional lustre and a sleek finishing touch. As one heads towards the private zones, there is a change of flooring treatments which
marks a transition of design styles. The master bedroom is a sanctuary in the true sense of the word with its neutral colour scheme and a sleek built-in wardrobe. While this space takes on a more muted palette, the children's bedrooms sport a brighter look with the inclusion of coloured feature walls. The rooms are kept tidy and minimal with built-in cabinets and recessed lighting that add a warm glow when needed.

or any busy professional, home should be a place where they can truly let go of the bustle of everyday life and just indulge in some much needed rest. And things are no different for the well-travelled homeowner of this four-room apartment located in Compassvale. But before this resale flat came to be the tranquil haven it is today, renovation works were required, and design director Jackson Tan of SPORES_Studio was called in to oversee the job.
When asked for a design brief, the owner stated that she wanted to transform the flat into a bright and modern-meets-eclectic home where she could wind down from her busy work schedule in peace. Additionally, she also wanted the home to be a personal gallery where she could display her unique designer collectibles that were amassed from her years of travelling. One look around the apartment brings forth the triangular-shaped painted walls that dot the

living spaces, which was inspired by the geometric paintings from Australian artist Esther Stewart. Jackson explains of the design inspiration, “Esther Stewart’s paintings attempt to generate mapping of domestic spaces and the push and pull between abstraction and representation, creating tension between colours and shapes. And we saw a parallel in this project where the domestic walls became the tensioned medium – at times juxtaposing calm pastel colours against dynamic triangulated geometric patterns and others to provide a clean, muted canvas to contrast against the eclectic objects of desire.” Upon closer inspection, it is quickly discernible that the geometric patterns on the walls throughout the home are separated into two sets of colours – one for the communal areas and the other for the private domain. “It was a deliberate decision,” adds Jackson. Doubling as a feature wall as well as providing a sense of orientation to the home, the first set – made up of white, light grey, pale blue and green – serves to provide a more dynamic presence to the communal areas.
MASTER BEDROOM
With the geometric patterns contained to only the headboard wall, the surrounding white space serves to balance out the colourful feature, in turn providing visual and psychological relief within the room.
Additionally, this colourblock wall design can also be seen on the bomb shelter entrance. “By doing so, not only is there a cohesive visual guide when one enters the unit from the entrance into the living room, but painting over the bomb shelter door also became a simple yet effective way to visually dematerialise the existence of the shelter,” the designer explains. To cater to the owner’s display needs, a bespoke display shelf-cum-divider screen was installed in the living room, which also offers the communal area privacy from the home’s entryway. To echo the triangular-shaped wall motifs, the divider screen also features a triangulated
structural system to maintain and reinforce design consistency throughout the home. Besides this brass-accented structure, the rest of the living space was kept free from any other built-ins, effectively ensuring that the apartment remains a spacious and flexible canvas that can be easily adapted and personalised in the future. Over in the kitchen, there is an understated luxurious quality, which is attributed to the warm timber tones on the cabinets as well as the marble-lookalike quartz on the backsplash and countertops. Meant to function more as a preparatory space for entertaining rather than an active cooking space, the homeowner’s top

requirement for the kitchen was to have ample storage space, of which Jackson catered to by installing upper and lower cabinets on all available wall space. Moving on to the owner’s private chambers, that’s where the second set of geometric patterns are found. Comprised of pink and grey shades, these triangular shapes are an extension from the pink-topped bay window settee and the full-height grey wardrobe respectively. Meeting just above the headboard, the occupant’s sleeping zone
is injected with a sense of calm and softness through the use of these two colourways. Meanwhile, for storage of clothes and accessories, Jackson designed and fabricated a series of full-height wardrobe units that feature a laminated finish as well as ergonomicallydesigned black stainless steel handles. Being the first space that greets the homeowner every morning, the master bathroom scores high with its luxurious contemporary ambience. Complementing its monochromatic

surroundings, large mirrors and a vanity that spans the entire length of the wall makes the master bath feel larger, brighter and more open. For added functionality, a storage cabinet was designed and fabricated to provide the occupant with additional storage space for her bathroom essentials. When asked to sum up his thoughts on the project, Jackson has this to say: “With our client already possessing a refined eye for design, it was very fun and exciting to work with her and furnish her abode. Besides renovation and carpentry works, it became apparent our main task was to sieve through her collectibles and arrange them either through complementing or contrasting the vintage with the new, in order to highlight her chosen narrative of modern-eclectic.” And at the end of it all, it’s safe to say that what remains is a cosy and personalised home that’s truly the perfect reflection of the owner’s favourite things.

Helmed by local interior design firm KDOT Associates, the unit follows a modernScandinavian design concept complemented by minimalist decor, and primarily serves as a comfortable abode for rest and relaxation for its two occupants.
Throughout the home, plenty of soft pastel colours and natural wood tones were utilised to create a welcoming atmosphere. Meanwhile, the originally bare flooring was laid over with vinyl strips from local flooring manufacturer Floor Xpert, giving the home a much more modern and updated look. Upon entering the living room, one would be immediately greeted by the sight of an inviting comfy grey sofa. This is accompanied by the room’s primary entertainment area which consists

of a wood-accented television console as well as a sleek flat-screen television. Besides these loose furniture pieces, the design team stayed away from installing any built-ins around the space. By doing so, the living area is made to feel more spacious and a lot arier without these boxy fixtures in the way. One of the homeowners’ main requests was to have an open kitchen that would make entertaining friends and family a breeze. To achieve this free-flowing layout, the partition wall that once separated the utilitarian zone from the rest of the home was knocked down. In its place
now is a wood-laminated kitchen island that not only increases countertop space during food prep, but also serves as a bar counter for breakfast and other casual meals. Since the placement of this island unit faces the living room’s generous windows, it is also used as a resting spot where the owners can sit and admire the lush greenery that sits just beyond. Just like the outer communal areas, the owners’ private living chambers carry a contemporary charm with their clean layout and neutral colour scheme. The minimalist theme is also further enhanced by the choice of a Queen-sized bed, accompanying wood-accented bedside tables as well as a pair of black hanging pendant lights. For storage purposes, a series of full-height wardrobe units were installed next to the bed. Comprising mostly wood and white laminates, the wardrobe’s

Placed vertically on the bottom half of the doors, this design treatment further adds to the clean and streamlined look of the sleeping zone with its linear design. With their can-do attitude, enthusiasm in design and impeccable service, it’s no wonder the company has gained a firm foothold in the interior design scene.

A recessed niche was installed in the middle to serve as a landing spot for keys, wallets and feng shui ornaments.
MASTER BATHROOM Aiming to recreate an elegant, hotel-like concept within the master en suite, Ashley utilised materials in a darker finish throughout the space. Akin to a frame, the design comprises a black rectangular border that surrounds a mixture of wood and glossy laminates, injecting the communal zone with a powerful design punch.
KITCHEN Over in the kitchen, the use of glossy white laminates on the cabinets not only carry on the colour scheme from the outer living spaces, but also makes the utilitarian area look and feel bigger. As the homeowners use the kitchen quite often, the installation of quartz countertops and backsplash helps in increasing the durability of the cooking zone.

utilitarian SURFACE The weathered stone effects on this tile collection make it perfect for the industrial-themed home
T
rends in interior design may come and go but a popular style that seems to be staying put is the industrial trend. Characterised by exposed pipes, dark tones, simple silhouettes and rough finishes, the style is at once utilitarian and edgy. It is no wonder why contemporary homeowners seem to love the look. Perhaps one of the most recognisable elements of an industrial-themed interior is exposed cement. The material’s rawness is a common thread found in industrial spaces like factories and warehouses, and in some cases, within trendy homes. Covering surfaces in your personal space in cement and similar materials like stone and concrete can be impractical, though, as they are not resistant to stains
and scratches. You’ll need a more durable and versatile material for your floors and walls, especially in functional zones and high-traffic areas. Enter stone- and cement-inspired tiles made from porcelain and ceramic. It is widely known that porcelain and ceramic tiles are reliable materials for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Perhaps one of their most favourable characteristics is that they are stain-resistant, which makes for easy maintenance. At the same time, tiles are known for their durability and can withstand various environmental conditions, like heat and humidity, for years. Practicality aside, if you are a designconscious homeowner who is thinking of adopting the industrial style in your home, tiles are a great option to consider applying
onto your floors and walls. This is because they come in a wide variety of colours, patterns and even textures that mimic various materials. One such collection is the Rue De St. Cloud range from Italian tile manufacturer Ascot Ceramiche, which is available at Hafary. Made with glazed porcelain, the tile collection is inspired by the ancient cobblestones that lead from Lyon to Paris. As such, the surfaces are designed to resemble weathered stone, with imperfections that become aesthetic qualities. Available in a range of shades that include light grey, dark grey and greige, the tiles are sure to impart an atmospheric edge to your spaces. Whether you use it in the bathroom or in the balcony, this versatile collection is the perfect marriage of form and function. HAFARY 105 Eunos Avenue 3 tel: 6250 1368 www.hafary.com.sg
