RABBI CHAPMAN’S CHRONICLES
“New in 2023! Northbrook Cultural Fair!” I found this announcement buried on the back pages of the free Northbrook Voice magazine, inviting local cultural organizations to participate. At first, I dismissed it. When I think “cultural organizations,” I don’t necessarily think “synagogue.” But over the next few days, I reconsidered my assumption. Why shouldn’t we be there, alongside groups representing the other cultures that make up Northbrook’s multicultural tapestry? Judaism may be a religion, but it is also certainly a culture. So, I sent off an email inquiry, and a few months later, there we were, right between an Aikido studio and the Northbrook Slavic Association.
spoke to included Jews (even some Congregation Beth Shalom members), and, of course, many non-Jews. I hope everyone left our table with some new understanding of the Jewish community, or at the very least a sachet of sweetsmelling spices and a special welcome note from Beth Shalom.
Perhaps not surprisingly, we were the only Jewish group present (not including local author Arianna Brooks, who read her adorable Jewish children’s books). At our Beth Shalom table, we helped guests make their own besamim (spice) bags for Havdalah as we chatted with them about Jewish life. The folks we
In between greeting visitors at our table, I stopped by other booths and learned more about the various cultures we live among in Northbrook. I learned that we have a vibrant Ukrainian community here, as well as residents of Thai, Korean, Mexican and Italian heritage, among others. I spoke to folks with little to no knowledge of Judaism. My “assistant” Elior (who initially thought a “cultural fair” meant exhibits on Ancient Egypt and medieval England) was proud to go around with me, explaining that he was there “representing the Jewish culture.” I felt pride too. As it turned out, the fair took place one day after the much-discussed “Day of Hate,” which, thankfully, had passed without incident. But the fear that many of us felt that Shabbat reminds us how important it is to show up proudly as Jews, especially in public. Perhaps the antidote to hate isn’t (just) love, but (also) pride.
In the end, the cultural fair turned out to be great exposure for Beth Shalom and our local Jewish community. I hope we can find more opportunities to show up together as proud representatives of our treasured Jewish culture.

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT
Shalom Chaverim,
Bob Spector
Ahhhh, spring is finally here (although we really did have winter lite this year) which means April showers are showering in Passover, one of my favorite holidays. I have such wonderful memories as a child attending our family seders at my grandparents’ home, using the blue Haggadah created by Maxwell House coffee. I can still smell the aromas of the fresh made matzah balls (with homemade farfel and carrots of course) simmering on the stove, homemade gefilte fish, and the thinly sliced roast beef platter warming in the oven of my bubbe’s kitchen. Every year my place at the table was just to the right of my Grandpa Spector who always led the seder. Every year he would hide the afikomen just to the right of his plate (I guess being the youngest grandchild had its privileges). Guess who found the afikomen every year, earning an extra 25 cents finders fee? Back in those days a quarter bought me five full size Hershey bars (a king’s ransom). By age 6 I started reciting the four questions (I couldn’t yet read Hebrew, but my father helped me memorize them) and did so until age 15 when the next generation of cousins took over.
I sometimes still long with feelings of loss and sadness for those days, but then Chris and I developed our own traditions. The aroma of simmering matzah balls and brisket (the best ever) warming in the oven are ever present in our kitchen. For years, Ari, Rachel, and Rebecca recited the four questions surrounded by family and friends, and they have now passed on that tradition to their next generation of cousins. The tradition in our family is that if you have a parent at the seder table you are eligible to hunt for the afikomen. I have made it a bit more challenging to find it than my grandfather did. The finder’s fee has gone up a bit, $5 to every hunter and $10 for the finder, but the reward still buys five full size Hershey bars. I try to find a Haggadah that blends the richness of our traditions while sharing a modern-day story that emphasizes the challenges we face today in creating a world based on social justice. Two web sites I have found particularly interesting are AJWS (American Jewish World Service) and HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society). I have found that for my children, nieces, and nephews teaching and reflecting upon our Jewish heritage and history is much more salient when the historical experiences of our people can be applied to the lives of 21st century people. Speaking of HIAS, in the coming months you will be hearing more about a new CBS initiative to support new immigrant families who will be arriving to Chicago in the near future. Stay tuned.
My reflective moment of recalling my Passovers past admittedly created tears of both joy and sorrow. Does everything have to change so darn much? But then I realize that while I am too many decades older I am still that six year old reliving every year the Passovers of my childhood. Yes, the setting is different, and the Haggadah is different, and the cast of family members has changed, but the sensory experience of wonderful smells, the sound of familiar words of prayer and song, and being surrounded by loved ones takes me happily back in time while experiencing the joys of the present.
My holiday wish for all of you is to take a moment to reflect upon your joyous family memories of Passovers past. I hope you are also able to connect those traditions and memories to your family’s traditions you continue to both maintain and create this year and years to come.
Chag
Sameach, Bob

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S EDITORIAL
It is always my pleasure to help others when it comes to searching for a new job. I also enjoy meeting others for breakfast to talk about choices, perspectives, and new avenues regarding career changes. Over the past few weeks, I have spoken with a few congregants that are trying to help their children find new jobs as well as look for new opportunities for themselves. I decided to reach out to my good friend Andrea Storz, Director of Employment at The Ark. I have seen Andrea help so many over the years and I asked her to write to all of you. I also highly recommend reaching out to Andrea if this article resonates with you. We think of The Ark for those in great need, however The Ark can help you as well when it comes to a new job search.
WHO AM I?
The first step in conducting a productive job search is to establish a professional identity. What does that mean? It is important to have a starting point, or developing a resume will be difficult to say the least. Of course, that does not mean you are limited to targeting only one career. For example, let’s say you have a strong work background in sales. If that is the case, you can obviously develop a resume highlighting your sales expertise, but you can also use and spin your background for a customer service or training or development role. An identity allows you to consider a peripheral opportunity as well. Determining a focus truly helps eliminate much of the stress that comes with an employment search. Many people have a challenging time and become frustrated when trying to make professional choices, but there are ways to help lead you to recognize and/or reacquaint yourself with the core strengths you have built.
1. Being honest with yourself is imperative. Compile a list of your true strengths, both hard and soft skills. Perusing job boards and reviewing job descriptions that are of interest is a smart way to see what the expectations and skills are for specific opportunities. Reviewing job descriptions also provides you with the chance to become familiar with what employers are looking for in terms of capabilities and can remind you of what you bring to a position.
2. In what role/industry is your work experience the strongest? Find out other opportunities that ask for comparable skills. Highlighting your experience in a way that is applicable for other positions is a strong way of elevating your flexibility.
3. Building a list showing your achievements is exceptionally important. Hiring Managers want results and providing them with this type of data has a powerful impact. There are all different types of data – not just numbers.
Remember that these steps will make step number 2 much easier to accomplish. Keep your eyes open for the next tip in this employment series – THE RESUME!!
Whether you are unemployed, underemployed, or just need advice, contact Andrea Storz, Director of Employment at The Ark and schedule a one-on-one zoom!! astorz@arkchicago.org or call 773-681-8964

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL/YOUTH
March was a very busy month as we celebrated Purim and began learning about Passover. We also celebrated the formal beginning of our Kitah Gimmel (3rd Grade) learning t’filah. Mazal tov to our amazing 3rd graders! Our Kitah Hey (5th Grade) also led services with our ShabbaTONE and had a beautiful Shabbat dinner. Mazel tov to our fantastic 5th graders!
April will be busy as we get ready to end our school year and continue to plan for next year.
Kitah Dalet (4th Grade) Led Shabbat B’Yachad with ShabbaTONE
Our 4thgrade students will lead Friday evening services on April 21st. For more detailed information look for our weekly school emails.
Gan, Kitah Aleph and Kitah Bet Shabbat B’Yachad with ShabbaTONE
Our Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grades will lead their own special Shabbat Service on Friday, May 5th at 5:15 p.m. followed by a special Shabbat dinner. For more detailed information look for our weekly school emails.
Plan Ahead and Save Money!
Religious School Registration for next school year begins this month. Look for emails and flyers with specifics on fees. For a paper registration form, please email Stacy Ybarra at sybarra@bethshalomnb.org.
Hiring teens!
The Religious School is looking to hire youth entering 8th through 12th grades in the fall to work in the school as madrichol. All madrichol will be required to be enrolled in Jewish day school or in the CBS High School Program. Contact Stacy Ybarra at sybarra@bethshalomnb.org for an application and to set up an interview.
We had quite the busy March, and April is no exception! From the Purim Carnival, Lounge Nights with the teens, and a beautiful Shabbat dinner with our FYC (families with young children) participants, CBS is always filled with joy and positivity. I am in awe of our teens who stayed for a LATE night with me and our advisor, Melissa Kaplan, baking 600+ hamantashen! So great to bring this tradition back after many years off.
I would like to thank everyone who made my first Purim Carnival at CBS a success, from the Men's Club and Sisterhood, to the religious school teachers and madrichol, and to the CBS staff who all volunteered. I have planned and executed several carnivals during my career, but this one was the best!
If you have not experienced the Ark Adventures program, I invite you, with or without a little one to a Friday or Saturday adventure with the amazing Jonathan Schmidt Chapman. Jonathan brings the parsha to life in ways you would not believe - storytelling, theater, and puppetry, sensory – you gotta see it to believe it!

SISTERHOOD
Jackie Zelkowitz
Pesach is right around the corner. There is always a great amount of effort that goes into baking for Pesach. I would like to extend a big thank you to Robin Bright for coordinating the baking and to Maria Catezone for shopping all over the area for all of the products for us. Sisterhood could not have done this without the two of you. Thank you also to all of those who helped bake. I look forward to seeing you to enjoy these Kiddushim.
On Thursday, March 16th, Sisterhood held our craft night. Edwards Florist of Northbrook taught us how to create beautiful centerpieces for our Shabbat tables. It was such a wonderful evening for us. Thank you to Debbie Hamilton and Stacy Gordon for planning this terrific event for us.
On Sunday, March 19th, Sisterhood joined Men’s Club, Membership and Social Action in teaming up with Maot Chitim to pack Passover boxes. Thank you to all that participated. It was such a fulfilling experience and so wonderful to see a large turnout from CBS.
Good Deeds Day (Mitzvah Day) will be on Sunday, April 16th from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m. at CBS. Sisterhood will team up with the Religious School and work on Social Action projects. Jodi Joffe and Teri Robins will be coordinating this for Sisterhood. Please stop by and join us while we work on doing good deeds.
The year is flashing past us so quickly! Our Culminating, Installation, and Valued Volunteer dinner will be on Wednesday, May 17th. Our 2023 Valued Volunteer is Jody Sigal. We are proud to recognize, publicly thank and honor Jody for all that she has done and continues to do for Sisterhood. Our entertainment for the evening will be Fred Zimmerman. Fred is a respected Chicago actor who uses his theatrical skills, along with some trick psychology, to create the experience of Pysch-Out Cafe. We hope that you can join us as we celebrate our very successful year.
Chag Sameach! See you at our upcoming events soon!

MEN’S CLUB
Chag Sameach to our wonderful community of Congregation Beth Shalom. Depending on when you are reading this, we hope that you will or already have enjoyed time with family and friends at your Seders and the joyous holiday of Passover. We have an exciting April planned, and we hope you can participate with us.
Here are our upcoming events. Please preregister on the Squaresite page (https://bit.ly/cbsmensclub):
Saturday, April 15th: Men’s Club Shabbat. We will be honoring our 2023 Kavod Award Honoree, Norm Padnos. We will also recognize our 50 years of Kavod honorees. The Men’s Club Choir, under the direction of Michael Schnitzler, will be returning after a three year absence. A word-class Kiddush will follow, and join us for a L’Chaim.
Monday, April 17th: Yom HaShoah. We will be joining Cantor Steven Stoehr at Temple Jeremiah where he will be guest cantor (see flyer in bulletin). That evening, please light your Yellow Candle that was sent to you by the Men’s Club.
Sunday, April 23rd: Israel in Depth. The topic will be “What Does it Mean to be Pro-Israel?” Please preregister.
As we do every month, we would like to introduce you to one of the leaders of our Men’s Club, Dr. Sam Grief. Sam has been a member of CBS for over 10 years, and he recently returned to our Board. Sam was previously Recording Secretary of the Men’s Club years ago. We are so glad to see him help in the kitchen and wherever we need a hand.
Sam was born in Montréal, Quebec, Canada. His family then moved to the neighboring city of Laval. He celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at Young Israel of Chomedey and attended Western Laval High School. Sam shared that his father was active in the Men’s Club of Young Israel and credits him with Sam’s interest in being active here at CBS.
One of Sam’s highlights growing up with his twin brother, Eric, was being on television together on a popular Montréal quiz show called “Reach for the Top.” When they were in 11th grade they earned the opportunity to be contestants. After studying for weeks, they got on and enjoyed a one-time visit to the popular show. Sam actually received an award in high school for being on the show.
Sam later attended McGill University in Montréal for his undergraduate studies, medical school earning his MD, and family medicine residency. His medical practice took him to New England prior to settling down in Chicago. In 1999, Sam joined the faculty at University of Illinois-Chicago as both a clinician and teacher of medical students and resident physicians in both the hospital and office settings. He held that position for twenty years and now works for CVS Health, advising and consulting on clinical strategies.
Sam met his wife, Kim Eisenberg, a native of Detroit who had graduated several years back from DePaul Law School, on JDate. Married in 2004, they lived in Chicago until 2012, then moved to Northbrook that summer. They have two children who both attend Glenbrook North High School, daughter, Alexa (17), is a senior and a son, Justin (15), who is a sophomore. They both had their B’nai Mitzvah at CBS with Justin having had the first Zoom Bar Mitzvah offered by Rabbi Melman and Cantor Stoehr during the pandemic.
In his spare time, Sam enjoys golf, crossword puzzles, and music. Sam wants to share with everyone that his family is so happy to live in Northbrook and enjoys the camaraderie of the community at Congregation Beth Shalom. The Men’s Club at CBS feels the same way about Sam getting more involved in CBS, and we look forward to his continued involvement on the Executive Board, in the kitchen and wherever else Sam wants to assist.
We look forward to seeing everyone at Men’s Club Shabbat on April 15th and hope everyone has a Chag Kasher v’Sameach.

CBS Memorial Plaques
If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified remembrance is through a Memorial Plaque.
Each memorial plaque, bearing the name and yahrzeit date, is mounted on the tablet in the Moseson Alcove or Feather Beit Midrash. It is lit on the Shabbat of the week of the yahrzeit, on the day of the yahrzeit and on the four festivals during the year when Yizkor is recited.
Contact Maria Catezone by phone at 847-498-4100 x26 or email MCatezone@BethShalomNB.org for information or to order a plaque.
