OPEN ACCESS

Our enthusiasm for open access books goes back more than 15 years. We continue our quest to produce as much content as possible as open access publication, free of charge for all readers.

Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,

Dear Readers,

This year we celebrate an anniversary! For ten years, the European Jewish Studies series, now with over 50 volumes, has been an important part of our Jewish Studies program. Founded by Julius H. Schoeps, the EJS stand for excellence and innovation. To mark the anniversary, the Moses Mendelssohn Center, under the new lead of Miriam Rürup, has made another ten volumes available in Open Access. With now over 20 Open Access volumes, the EJS makes a significant contribution to free access to scholarly literature, which is particularly close to our hearts as a publisher (p. 22).Our database portfolio gets an addition in the field of anti-Semitism research this year: the Singerman Bibliography of Antisemitic Texts in English enables targeted research on English-language, anti-Semitic primary sources from the beginning of the 19th century to 2015 (p 39). The Handbook of Anti-Semitism is already established as a standard work, but it will also now be available as digital database of some 2,200 entries in seven categories (p. 29). Finally, we are pleased to introduce a new interdisciplinary series. The project Religious Positionings in Judaism, Christianity and Islam asks about the role and dialogical potential of religions in conflicts and thus contributes to current discourses (p. 17). We wish our readers exciting discoveries and a stimulating read!

Among the few allusions to mid-first millennium BCE scribal culture are the Aramaic Story of Ahiqar and the Hebrew Tale of Jeremiah and Baruch’s Scroll (Jeremiah 36). This study provides a novel interpretation of both tales and proposes a newly identified literary subgenre to which they belong by studying the sources independently for their allusions to scribal culture and comparatively for their literary features. Kognitive Metapherntheorie; Kommunikation; Sprachhandeln; Weisheitsliteratur; Sprachreflexion

Biblical proverbial wisdom frequently addresses humans’ verbal actions. It is often about how communication works in the social context. This volume examines the aphoristic wealth of Old Testament reflections on language, inquires into points of comparison with modern models of communication theory by taking into account text and interpretative history, and develops the metaphoric concepts used in the process. Language in the Book of Wisdom; cognitive metaphor theory; communication; verbal action

Where can we find the origins of biblical covenant theology? Perhaps in the Book of Hosea, where the word ‫ תירב‬appears five times? In interdisciplinary dialogue with Roman legal history, development and social psychology, literary studies, and ancient Near East studies, this edited volume sets off on an exciting and inspiring search for clues, with the goal of "ploughing new ground" (Hos 10:12). Living in a time of growing Hellenistic pressures, the Jewish sage Ben Sira sought to strengthen his students' piety. He accomplishes this by uniting the conception of the sage as father of his students to the spousal relationship the sage shares with personified Wisdom. In developing these themes, Ben Sira provides the model by which his students can raise pious children in a family that resembles their pedagogical situation under Ben Sira. The book contains facsimiles, transcription and translation of the Vision as it survived, albeit incomplete. A comparative study of the work enables the reconstruction of its missing parts. The Vision may have been composed in the area where al-Muʿtaṣim battled Theophilos in the 830s CE, namely, northern Syria and southeastern Anatolia. It reflects a ‘meeting point’ between three monotheistic religions in the ninth and tenth centuries CE. Apocrypha; Abbasid and Fatimid Caliphs; Antichrist; The Son of the Daughter of Levi

Cults and temples of the ancient world regularly held assets in land, often naming a patron deity as landowner but managing the land themselves and affording it sanctity protections. Such arrangements can provide essential background to the Hebrew Bible’s assertion that the Land of Israel is “God’s land.” They can also shed light on the references in biblical and early Jewish literature to the sacred landholdings of the priesthood or the temple. Scholars rely on intuition to relate text to context in reconstructions of Jewishness in antiquity. This study uses a recent sociological model to link demographic and institutional environments with how writers construct Jewishness. It integrates textual and material sources into a thick description of the competition over who is in, how this is marked, and what this means for life chances. The results confirm and challenge past conclusions. Hasmoneans; Herod the Great; Antiochus IV; Historical Sociology

This study approaches the topic of ethnicity through the lenses of the ancients themselves rather than through the imposition of modern categories. It takes into account the expressions and attitudes of a wide variety of Greek, Roman, Jewish, and early Christian sources. A central issue guides the course of the work: did ancient writers reflect upon collective identity as determined by common origins or by shared traditions and culture? COMMENTARIES ON EARLY JEWISH LITERATURE Edited by Loren T. Stuckenbruck, Pieter W. van der Horst, Hermann Lichtenberger, Doron Mendels, James R. Mueller The series Commentaries on Early Jewish Literature (CEJL) is devoted to the study of Jewish documents and traditions that can be dated or traced back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods (ca. 300 BCE – 150 CE). The literature covered by the series represents a rich diversity of literary forms and religious perspectives. Formally, these writings include testaments, apocalypses, legends, expansions and interpretations of biblical writings, psalms and prayers, poetry, historiography, and wisdom literature. They witness to an immensely creative period during which many Jews were struggling to preserve a living faith in the wake of social, political, and religious upheavals in the Mediterranean world and the Near East. The Nuremberg Miscellany is a unique work of scribal art, rich with paint and powdered gold. It was penned and illustrated in southern Germany in 1589 by Eliezer b. Mordechai the Martyr. The book is a compilation of religious Hebrew texts, which was probably created as a father’s wedding gift to his son. The text and the naïve illustrations are a treasure of Jewish lore and a veritable reflection of contemporary life of an affluent Jewish family.

The Yalkut Shimoni compiles rabbinical interpretations of the entire Hebrew bible. We do not know the criteria for selecting the interpretations, nor whether the book was conceived as a comprehensive exegetical reference work to be linked to biblical interpretations in the Talmud and Midrash or for reforming the rabbinical interpretive tradition. The translation of this work is a first step toward answering these questions. Dagmar Börner-Klein, Universität Düsseldorf, und Beat Zuber, Neudorf, Schweiz.

Charles S. Peirce’s semiotics best explains the “performativity” of ancient religious verbal and non-verbal signs such as divine names, signs only partially understood by ancient authors. Sign meaning is always dependent on fluid processes of interpretation. Examples are drawn from ancient Israelite and late antique divine representations, apostle Paul’s linguistic letter/spirit model, Christian debates representing the deity, and Burning Man. The second volume of the new series Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses points out the roots of the concept of “human rights” in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It shows how far the universal validity of “human rights” opposes in some crucial points with religious traditions. The aim of KCID is to establish an archeology of religious knowledge to create a new conceptual platform of mutual understanding among religious communities.

The present volume of “Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses”, an “archeology of religious knowledge” investigates the both fascinating and contentious concept of the environment throughout the thinking of the three major monotheistic religions. It ventures forth into the threefold history of thought, the fundamental believes and the current controversies surrounding the most profound relation humans have with the world surrounding them.

No topic is more current than that of the environment. Yet the theme is almost as old as the human approach to questions about the conditions that surround us. The book assembles the intellectual, theological and philosophical history of the concept of “Environment” in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Communalities und Differences between the three traditions are examined, as well as past and current controversies.

Rabbi Samuel Hirsch is one of the most important transnational Jewish Reform theologians and philosophers of religion of the 19th century. He remains a key figure for understanding the contemporaneous debates in Western Europe and the United States on questions of Jewish emancipation, Jewish identity, the compatibility of religion, state and society, the relationship between particularism and universalism as well as the critique of antisemitism.

JUDENTUM¨¨JUDAISM

This volume is the first to compare the biographies and work genesis of the Protestant pastor and resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) and the Jewish religious philosopher and activist Abraham J. Heschel (1907-1972). The author shows how both drew their heavily relational thinking from the (Hebrew) bible and personal piety, and reconcile it with rational thinking, which ultimately led them to engage in prophetic practical activism.

What should one know in order to position oneself vis-à-vis other religions and confessions? What is religious knowledge how should it be taught? This volume sheds light on educational media in Judaism and Christianity such as catechisms, children’s bibles and sermons as well as Jewish and Protestant teacher training in 19th-century Germany and explores the methodological potentials of educational media as a source for (inter-) religious history.

The experience of birth has functioned through the ages as a vital metaphor foundational to all fields of art, philosophy, religion and literature. This book highlights the significance of birth in Jewish culture, as a challenge to existential philosophy and the centrality of death in Western culture. Similarities between Kabbalistic and midrashic perceptions of birth and its current place in cultural and psychoanalytic discourse are discussed.

The Marrano phenomenon is still an unexplored reality of modern Western culture: the presence of the borderline Jewish identity, which avoids clear-cut cultural and religious attribution. The book is not a historical study of the Marranos, but the application of the “Marrano metaphor” as a vehicle which allowed modern thinkers and writers of Jewish origin to enter the realm of universal communication, without making them forgo their Jewishness.

The contributions in this volume address developments in the emergence of a Jewish scholarship movement against the backdrop of diaspora and migration movements in Central and Eastern Europe. These studies on the epistemology of scholarly practices, on the genesis of methods and concepts, and exchange between theoretical approaches reveal the developments that took place in the Wissenschaft des Judentums (Jewish Scholarship) movement. NEUE REIHE

RELIGIÖSE POSITIONIERUNGEN IN JUDENTUM, CHRISTENTUM UND ISLAM #Dialog #Konflikt #Pluralität #Differenz #Multireligiosität

Though typically associated more with Judaism than Christianity, the status and sacrality of Hebrew has nonetheless been engaged by both religious cultures in often strikingly similar ways. The language has furthermore played an important, if vexed, role in relations between the two. Hebrew between Jews and Christians closely examines this frequently overlooked aspect of Judaism and Christianity's common heritage and mutual competition. A Study of Othering in Medieval Denmark and Sweden

This book explores the portrayal of Jews and Judaism in medieval Danish and Swedish literary and visual culture. Drawing on over 100 manuscripts and incunabula as well as runic inscriptions and religious art, the author describes the various, often contradictory, images ranging from antisemitism and antiJudaism to the elevation of Jews as morally exemplary figures. It includes new editions of 54 East Norse texts with English translations. Middle Ages; Sweden; Denmark; antisemitism; Christian literature; vernacular literature

Jonathan Adams, Department of Historical Studies, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Four Early Modern Epics. An Annotated Edition

This book offers for the first time annotated editions of four sixteenth-century Yiddish epic poems, all preserved in single copies. Two epics retell the book of Joshua, and two relate the book of Judges. The content of the works is based on Jewish sources, while their style and form were influenced by German epic and chivalric literature. The annotated edition presents the original Old Yiddish texts together with an English introduction. Epic, Hebrew Bible, Old Yiddish

This manual focuses on the Romance languages as they appear in texts written by Jews, mostly using the Hebrew alphabet. It provides a comprehensive overview of the Jews and the Romance languages in the Middle Ages (part I) as well as after the expulsions (part II). 20th- and 21st-century Judaeo-Spanish varieties are discussed and described in a section apart (III), given that Judaeo-Spanish can be considered as a language of its own. Works that had a considerable impact on the development of the humanities in the twentieth century emerged against the backdrop of a culture of knowledge and an epistemological history shaped by Judaism. This volume aims to document this development without simply comparing origins, belonging, and styles of thought, instead tracing a textual scholarship that provided new access to literature and literary studies. LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

From the Middle Ages to present day, the volume offers a thorough introduction to Jewish Literatures in Spanish and Portuguese. Covering texts from Europe, Latin America, and beyond, this comprehensive handbook aims at steering clear of isolationist approaches by supporting the epistemic claim that diasporic Jewish literatures have been (and are) deeply intertwined with global literary history.

Geschlechterbilder; literarischer Antisemitismus; Stereotype; Misogynie; Jüdische Weiblichkeit

In the nineteenth and, in particular, twentieth centuries, literature became a place to negotiate ideas of Jewish femininity, an experimental space in which contemporary discourses were carried out and tried out on and using female Jewish characters. Literary portrayals of Jewish women and therefore Jewish femininity as a paradigm of male authorship are thus at the center of this study. Ideas of gender; literary antisemitism; stereotypes; misogyny; Jewish femininity

This volume, which is based on diaries written in Breslau, sheds new light on experiences of shrinking space and the specific characteristics of German-Jewish ego-documents. The diaries and autobiographies, which have hitherto received relatively little attention, offer important insights into the relation between the Nazi use of space and the exclusion of ‘foreigners’. Islam; Koran; Tempelberg; Jerusalem

Quranic philology, which is always called to bear witness in contemporary disputes about whether Islam is part of European cultural history, faces a challenging task. What is required is no less than a “political philology that is aware of its social involvement.” But can philology even be political? Islam; Quran; Jerusalem; Temple Mount

The Compendium of the Jew of Salms is an encyclopaedic work in which the author compiled his knowledge of different fields of medicine in the late 1420s. He enriched the insights that had been adopted by renowned authorities with his own vast experience, meaning that his compendium provides a multifaceted, comprehensive insight into the theory and practice of late medieval medicine.

For the first time, this work comprehensively examines Jewish history in Bavaria. Rolf Kießling describes and analyzes the history of the regions of Franconia, Swabia, and Old Bavaria in a study that extends from the Middle Ages to the Shoah and beyond. Kießling does not present Jewish history as a mere prelude Nazism, but instead considers diverse developments ranging from persecution to acceptance. Jewish history; Bavaria

Judenverfolgung; Zweiter Weltkrieg; Nachkriegszeit; Erinnerungskultur

After experiencing fascism and occupation, did the Jewish community in Rome try to pick up where they had left off before the passing of the Italian racial laws? Or did the Shoah lead to a radical break with the past? This book shows that continuities outweighed breaks by looking at some of the central dimensions of Jewish identity. The book analyzes post-conflict responses of religious minorities – Jews and Protestants – to violent attacks by the Cracovian Catholic majority in the age of religious distress following the Reformation. While testing the boundaries of interreligious coexistence, it challenges the regnant paradigm of Polish religious tolerance and cogently shows its true nature lies in the ability to overcome crises rather than prevent violence. This book is the first study of the development of antisemitism in nineteenth-century Sweden, based on an analysis of 150 books and pamphlets. The significance of religion for the development of modern racist antisemitism is a much debated topic – the Swedish case provides new insights into this debate. Relying on medieval models, nineteenth-century debates were informed by a comprehensive and mostly negative “knowledge” about Jews. Sweden; Middle Ages; anti-judaism; emancipation; archive

The book looks at how Jews built Czestochowa, the eighth largest Jewish community in pre-war Poland, into a major industrial and commercial center. Jews knew Czestochoway as one of the most antisemitic towns because of Church and Fascist instigation of boycotts of Jewish businesses and pogroms intended to drive Jews out the city. Erinnerungskultur; Fotografie; Auschwitz

The 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz was commemorated in 2020. While the final survivors are now rapidly disappearing, mass tourism phenomena can be perceived in Auschwitz at the same time. In light of these changes, it is important to discuss the concept of remembrance. Mougenot photographed the two extermination camps and locations in the so-called “Interessengebiet” (area of interest), which was largely forgotten after 1945. This multi-disciplinary volume is about social change in various cases of mass violence. In life under persecution, social relations and social structures were not absent or replaced by an ethno-racial order. The studies in this book show the influence of social structures like gender, age and class on life under persecution. Exploring practices in family and labor relations and collective action, they counter claims of an atomization of society. Genocide; 20th century, global history

Christian Gerlach, University Bern, Switzerland.

ANTISEMITISMUS UND HOLOCAUST

“From help to self-help” was the motto of an almost forgotten German-Jewish self-help organization, Emigrant Self-Help in Stockholm. It existed from 1938 to 1964, shaped the lives of refugees, and enriched Stockholm’s cultural life with its events. Using numerous photos, annotated documents, and short biographies of the most important protagonists, this volume is the first to describe its history.

The book explores the cultural and discursive aspects of Holocaust memory in South Africa from the years of apartheid through to the transition to democracy. It provides a rich empirical account of the centrality of Holocaust memorialization to the Jewish community’s ongoing struggle against antisemitism. While it focuses on white perceptions of the Holocaust, the book also investigates the role of Holocaust memory in the anti-apartheid struggle. The academic study of modern antisemitism and Judeophobia requires a thorough analysis of primary sources across multiple languages, genres, and formats. This bibliographic database identifies a significant variety of books, pamphlets, ephemera, and selected articles, either written in English or translated into English, from the beginning of the 19th century extending to 2015 imprints. The sources come from different countries around the world and the texts reflect a wide diversity of religious, extremist, and nationalist ideologies. A large percentage of the more than 9,200 texts are blatant hate propaganda and theologically driven, while others are considerably more subtle in tone. A unique feature of this bibliography are the descriptive annotations, often with quotes from cited sources, and the identification of owning libraries and repositories where copies are located. The bibliography can be searched by author, title, and publication year.
