2 / / LEADERSHIP REPORT HEADING

From the Principal Dear Members of the De La Salle Community, As we come to the end of another year, a year which seems to have flown by like no other before it, there is a great deal to reflect upon. I have always believed the critical indicator of an effective school is the capacity to constantly strive for improvement and the dominant themes in my 2015 reflection are change, growth and development. Researchers and academics are justifiably cautious when analysing or predicting timeframes within which schools can execute meaningful change but I am very proud of our staff, students and parents for the positive improvements they have been able to implement this year. These changes vary in scope and significance, too numerous to

and support the students as they navigate adolescence and beyond.

elaborate on in this space, but I must highlight at least some of them. Perhaps of major prominence is the 2015 – 18 Strategic Plan, setting the direction and agenda for the immediate future and mapping out our aspirations and defining who, what and where we aim to be in the next few years. As I write, our newly formed Property Committee is working with a Project Manager and architectural firm in developing a Master Plan, aimed primarily at developing facilities on the Tiverton Campus. This is an exciting chapter in the history of De La Salle and we

should have the plan published by April next year. The review and subsequent recommendations for the restructure of the pastoral system, led by Mr John McAlroy (Head of Tiverton Campus), sees the reintroduction of the House system and vertical pastoral care groups in Years 10–12. The four-House system will underpin virtually all aspects of the students’ experience at the College, including student leadership opportunities. The key factor underpinning this innovation is the wellbeing of our students. A range of initiatives within the House system restructure will support our young men, providing a sense of unity, identity and belonging. Particularly important among these initiatives is the introduction of a regular timetabled Personal Development/Wellbeing lesson for all Year 7–12 students, focusing on age-appropriate issues and programs to guide, advise

On the academic front, Year 11 and 12 teachers as a team have adopted a range of priorities to lift standards and expectations around the quality and consistency of our senior students’ performance. The Year 12 students in particular embraced this encouragement and I was thrilled with their improved culture of application and study throughout 2015. The first year of our new Year 10 curriculum structure has been very successful, providing greater scope for choice and breadth within the various disciplines but also allowing for increased rigour and relevance and fresh pedagogical approaches as we prepare these students for VCE. The planned 2016 implementation of the initial stages of our Year 9 In9uire is the result of a dedicated and innovative team of teachers who reviewed

our traditional Year 9 offering and designed a program characterised by contemporary learning. Year 9 students were also the beneficiaries of our pilot scheme in rolling out laptops to each student in Term 3. This is a carefully planned and staged feature of the 2014 ICT Strategic Plan, with all staff completing a Digital Learning Certificate before the Year 4, 7 and 10 students receive their devices in 2016. The unambiguous goal here is to ensure this technology is used effectively by all to enhance learning and teaching. The involvement of each and every teacher in a Professional Learning Team for the duration of 2015, defining then working on an action research project, has been a highlight. Covering themes such as literacy, numeracy, technology, feedback, 21st century skills,

been wonderful — a very promising indicator for the future.

inquiry based learning, collaborative work and extending our more able students, the teams have had a significant impact on classroom practice from Year 4–12.

Days from Year 7–11 and care and support for all in our community are just some of the expressions of an education based on our Founder’s ideals.

Our Lasallian charism remains a dominant feature of the College’s everyday operations. Our core principles — concern for the poor, faith in the presence of God, quality education, an inclusive society and respect for all – provide a faithful and reliable guide to our daily operations. Another $103,000 raised via Mission Action Day for Lasallian charitable works, four community masses in our feeder parishes, so many unselfish contributions and involvements in social justice activities, the introduction of a Staff Formation Day to focus on our Lasallian identity, a beautiful and meaningful Valedictory Mass in the glorious St Ignatius church in Richmond, the reintroduction of the Year 12 Retreat, Reflection

The staff at De La Salle — teaching and non-teaching — is our most valuable asset. Along with the Executive Team and the Directors of Learning and Development I have challenged our staff in a range of areas this year and asked them to respond to my goal of improvement and raising standards in order to ensure we are providing our young men with access to a rich, relevant, contemporary and innovative learning experience. I have been delighted with their response — teachers, learning support officers, administration, ICT and maintenance have all been involved to some extent in change, restructure and growth. This can be challenging in a school, but I must say the support and engagement in all areas has

It is imperative to acknowledge the College Executive for their dedication, professionalism and wisdom. Deputy Principals Tom Ryan and Mark Gustincic, Heads of Campus Luke Kenealy (Kinnoull) and John McAlroy (Tiverton) and in her first year as Director of Finance and Administration, Kerrie Jordan, have invariably supported me and each other in all our endeavours. I must concede a good deal of this would not have been remotely possible without Principal’s PA Sandy Wreford’s amazing efficiency, generosity of time and spirit, and tireless work ethic. The College Board continues to provide support and direction, for which I am very grateful. The various Directors present different skill sets

but a common goal of improving opportunities and outcomes for the boys in our care. Board Chair Tony Morwood has committed for another two years and his support and advice for me have been crucial. Br Chris Gorringe, 2015 Deputy Chair Damien Nolan, Anne Arbon, Maureen Salter, Mark Parker, Michael Skerrett and recent appointment Paul Shannon represent a visionary and dedicated team with a clear focus on excellence for all in our College. We were privileged to also have Brother Sir Pat Lynch from New Zealand as a Director for 2015.

parents, a hugely successful Race Day at Caulfield building on 2014’s event and huge crowds in excess of 400 at the Mother’s and Father’s Day Breakfasts have each unified and enthused the College community. Finally, thank you to all in our Lasallian community for all you have contributed to our fine school this year. We live in exciting times as the College continues to flourish. Best wishes for a happy, holy and safe Christmas.

Pastoral Care and Organisation This very successful year will be remembered by many at the College as the time where the momentum of change and renewal gathered considerable pace. This is especially true in relation to Pastoral Care and Organisation. Pastoral care is about care and concern for each boy at the College. At its core are the key Lasallian values of respect and service to others. This year the College commenced phase one of the implementation of the recommendations of the Pastoral Care Review undertaken in 2014. The plan involved the significant move to return and revitalize the House system that commenced at De La Salle in 1938 and has been in recess for a number of years. The return to the four traditional Houses; St Austin’s, St Edwin’s, St Leo’s and St Mark’s, provides enhanced pastoral care and greater opportunities for student involvement and connection with the College.

As part of this move all students and staff have been allocated to a House. Some family connections to the House cross a number of generations of ‘Old Boys’, while for other boys it creates a new beginning. Houses help foster a sense of identity and belonging, enabling each student to develop relationships and friendships with boys across year levels. Houses create the opportunity for students to work together towards a common purpose, be it in the arts, sport, College events or community service. This year our major College sporting carnivals, athletics, cross-country and swimming, were run as interHouse competitions and next year

in phase two of the reintroduction of the House system an extensive range of activities and events, drawn from all aspects of College life, will be available to the students. Mission Action Day in Term 1 was an amazing success, with just over $103,000 raised to support Lasallian social justice programs both in Australia and overseas. Mission Action Day is more a process than an event. It unfolds over a number of weeks and it involves all staff and students working together. It culminates in visible action, but most of all it exemplifies what can be achieved when we as a community place others’ needs before our own. The return to Houses has also enabled the College to offer greater leadership opportunities to the students. After a rigorous selection process appointments of senior students to House Captain and House Vice-Captains positions, as well as the creation of House

Lasallian and House Arts Captains, has given the opportunity to a greater number of students to lead in areas of personal strength and interest. Overall this means an expanded senior student leadership team of 23 boys. The 2015 group of College Leaders, led by College Captain Elliot Fabris and mentored by Ms Haylene Peipert, worked brilliantly in their leadership roles and their generosity and involvement helped build the College community throughout the year. The Year 9 Ambassador Leadership Program, where boys are given the chance to apply for and be selected to serve the College community through their involvement in activities such as College Tours, Information Evenings and other major College events provides a unique opportunity in the junior school. This year over 60 boys were involved in the program and all did an outstanding job in proudly representing the

College, while building confidence and inter-personal skills. The Class Captains from Years 4 to 12 did an excellent job in their various groups, gaining much from the sense of responsibility and the various experiences undertaken as part of their role. The Pastoral Team included the Heads of Campus, Year Level Coordinators, Primary Coordinator and Counsellors. This group of dedicated and committed staff provided the strong, supportive framework that enabled the Homeroom Teachers across the College to create the best possible environment to support all the students in our care. Pastoral care at the College is truly a team effort, it involves all staff at the College and is built on the guidance and example of St John Baptist de La Salle and the teachings of the Gospel. So, it is with a deep sense of gratitude and thanks to all staff that we can look back with pride over the achievements of 2015 and look forward with optimism and enthusiasm to all that 2016 promises. Learning and Teaching In 2013 a formal process was introduced for the consideration of variation of the curriculum described in the College’s Curriculum Handbook. The process includes formulation of proposals within College departments or Learning Area Teams. These proposals are presented to the Curriculum Standing Committee, then, following consideration, a number of recommendations emerge. The recommendations are presented to a staff meeting for consultation, before being referred to the College Executive. As a product of this process the following variations for 2016 have been confirmed: 1. An expansion of the Year 7–12 Personal Development Program. 2. The introduction of a semester of Drama, Music, Technology and Visual Arts for all students in Years 7 and 8. 3. Phase one of an extensively redesigned, experientially-based Year 9 program, including an inquiry-driven city experience in 2016.

this year. They were formed with a view to providing recommendations about the way forward in relation to the Year 9 program, assessment and reporting, personal development and Year 9 Transition. The members of these groups have ably supported Mr David Alexander, Mrs Lucy Russell and Mrs Rose Roe, who have chaired these groups.

All proposals involved careful consideration and significant time, thought and debate. There is collective optimism about the benefits of these ground-breaking initiatives, with a great deal of work already completed to ensure their successful implementation.

Other work undertaken in 2015 includes the significant efforts brought to bear to launch the Year 9 Notebook Computer Pilot Program. In addition, the creation of Professional Learning Teams has seen all teachers involved in action research in a targeted area of learning and teaching practice. The College also joined the University of Melbourne Network of Schools, alongside 24 other schools drawn from a spectrum of sectors and locations. Also, new leadership arrangements in learning and teaching were implemented successfully, comprising over 20 new positions for this year.

In addition to the work of these program-level change initiatives, four sub-committees of the Curriculum Standing Committee were convened

I would like to acknowledge the fine work of all of the staff with responsibilities related to the Learning and Teaching area in 2015.

4. Introduction of a new ‘Immersion’ program for Years 7–9, including a diverse offering of units running in parallel with ACC sport.

6 / LEADERSHIP REPORT

College Captain’s Report 2015, the 103rd year of the College, was a year of stirring beginnings and dignified ends. A year of transition with many firsts, and many lasts, it held something special for all associated with our proud school, De La Salle. Those outside the College only have a glimpse of understanding of how special a place De La is for so many of us. It’s that unique brotherhood, instilled by the example of our older brothers, which unifies us. It links us as family, along with staff who continually foster the culture and essence of De La. I’ve come to appreciate how they treat you like an equal, like a brother, like a friend. We walk alongside as brothers and sisters, never above and never below. We build relationships based on mutual respect, together moulding the next Blue and Gold generation. For this, I say thank you. If there is any advice I could give, it would be to realise the calibre of people you deal with on a daily basis at school. Don’t wait for that moment of cathartic reminiscence on Graduation Day, a moment that many Old Boys may remember only too well. Simply appreciate all your days, for they are truly enviable. No matter what happens in the future, you will always have your Lasallian brothers by your side. We may attend different institutions, and live in different suburbs, but we

will never really be apart. As it has been so eloquently expressed, on so many occasions throughout the history of this great College, “You can take the boy out of De La, but you can’t take De La out of the boy.” I would like to personally recognise and thank the College Leaders. To Raphael Canty, Liam Chai, Ryan Cosgrave, Jack Fogarty, Josh Segal, Daniel Byrden, William Mackie, Enzo Hamilton, Matthew Mottola, Stefan Di Medio, Connor Rate, Liam Bisognin and of course our Leadership Coordinator Miss.

Haylene Peipert. Working with the 13 of you, and seeing the outstanding work you have put in, definitely gave meaning to the adage “Actions speak louder than words.” Although we may envy and not quite have the vast playing fields of some of our fellow Colleges, what we do have is boys ready to give their all for each other, boys with Blue and Gold running through their veins, a sense of brotherhood and unity that makes us the envy of many other schools — our spirit, and that culture which defines us.

I have great faith in the direction the College is taking under the guidance of Principal Houlihan. I have confidence in our future, and the staff who work tirelessly in pursuit of excellence. De La Salle is in good hands. From a chubby little Year 7, whom you embraced and gave a home to — I cannot thank you boys enough. Elliot Fabris College Captain

A Word from the Chaplain It is gratifying to witness the spiritual life of De La Salle College enacted throughout the year in Masses, Liturgies, Reflection Groups and Retreats which enable our students to embrace and develop the best of themselves. On several occasions the whole community gathered for Mass to celebrate significant moments in our year. We began with marking the opening of the College year and Investment of College Leaders. At this Mass we welcomed back our high achievers in the 2014 VCE exams to recognise the fulfilment of their hard work. Celebrating Founder’s Day remains a focal point of our spiritual celebrations, as does marking our deep commitment to developing an ethos of social justice amongst our College cohort. Celebrating with our Year 12 students and parents was a

highlight of thanksgiving for these young men who are embarking on a new era in their lives. Our Music Department enhanced our Year 12 Eucharistic celebration with two new compositions by Raphael Canty (Year 12) and Ms Cindy Frost (Director of Music), which bookmarked the Mass at St Ignatius, Richmond. The College Easter Liturgy engaged the students in marking out the trilogy from Holy Thursday, through Good Friday to Easter. Homeroom Liturgies caught up and enhanced the Religious Education program throughout the year.

THE YEAR 7 SPIRITUAL PROGRAM

RECONCILIATION, FIRST EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION

The Year 7 Spiritual Initiation Program “Celebrating Catholic Life”, has spanned 2015, taking in all Year 7 students in small groups. The program serves to welcome and initiate students into both the Catholicity of the College and an understanding of the Lasallian ethos; which involves them in reflection, discussion and searching to discover their own beliefs, creeds, spiritual celebration and determination in the road ahead. Cultivating the emotional and spiritual intelligence of our students is at the core of this program and so helping the boys tap into their own inner strength and goodness and consider ways in which they can use their gifts to make a difference during their years at De La Salle and as future leaders in our world.

Forty-one students from Years 4 to 7 received Sacraments during 2015. The College has continued its collaboration with St Anthony’s Glen Huntly whose generosity is deeply appreciated.

Father Brendan Dillon (an Old Boy of the College) presided over the Sacrament of Reconciliation on the 21 April in the College Chapel in the presence of family. Bishop Peter Elliott conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on 9 August and First Communion was celebrated on 15 November at St Anthony’s. Parents were engaged with their sons’ preparation through Information Nights and Retreat Days and home discussion, creating a productive partnership during this process. Collaborating with our parents and supporting them as the first educators in faith remains a high priority of the College Sacramental program. Mrs Joan Ferguson College Chaplain

DE LA SALLE COLLEGE BLUE AND GOLD 2015

Faith Development This year has seen important liturgical celebrations in the life of the College. The school year began with the Year 7 Inaugural Mass at Our Lady of Victories Basilica, Camberwell, welcoming in the new cohort of boys to De La Salle. Our Lasallian community also celebrated Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent, followed later by a deeply spiritual Easter Liturgy which recalled the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The ANZAC and Remembrance Day rituals reminded us all of the fragility of human life and the need for peace in our world. Our Founder’s Day Mass focused on the lives of significant De La Salle Brothers who helped shape our Malvern community and their legacy to us; whilst the Social Justice Mass drew on our Lasallian charism which responds to the last, the least and the lost in our community. The Year 12 Valedictory Mass was celebrated at St Ignatius’ Richmond and honoured the combined efforts of the year level over the past six — and in some cases nine years — of Lasallian charism and education. Our end-of-year Masses marked the beginning of Advent; the time in the Church year when Christians worldwide prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. In addition to MAD Day, St Vincent de Paul, Year 9 Lasallian Service, PNG, Balgo Hills and Coolies, to name but a few College social justice initiatives, a number of other

efforts have emerged such as voluntary work at the Men’s Refuge in Fitzroy and St Joseph’s South Yarra which ministers to the poor, addicts and the homeless; various fund raising activities for the poor; and our first Sleep Out at Kinnoull to raise money and awareness for the underprivileged and the dispossessed in our community. This year was the first time all students experienced their own year level Retreat focusing on some of the deeper questions of life, such as: Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose?; as well as leadership and faith. This is the first time for many years that each student has had the opportunity to share aspects of their faith, aspirations, personal goals and dreams within the confines of their cohort. Whilst our world seems to be spiralling out of control with war, terrorism, poverty, secularism and this emerging ‘new atheism’, we need to allow ourselves to be clothed in the Risen Christ so that we can be transformed. If we can teach our students to try and become more fully human in the way they live their lives, such as

learning to love more sincerely, be more tolerant of each other, and forgive others more honestly, the misery that flanks this world might begin to dissolve into a better place in which to live. This is why we continue to guide our students towards the spiritual by encouraging them to reflect on the truths of the sacred found in Scripture, Retreats, Liturgies and Masses. In 1967, Pope Paul VI decreed that the order of deacon could be conferred for a life-long ministry upon married or celibate men. On 14 November I had the immense honour to be ordained a Permanent Deacon by Archbishop Denis Hart in St Patrick’s Cathedral. I am the first ‘Old Boy’ from De La Salle Malvern to receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders since Stuart Hall and Anthony Ireland were ordained priests in 1987. Rev Graeme Pender Faith and Liturgy Coordinator

Year 7–12 Retreats As their final VCE year commenced, all Year 12 students gathered at the Rawson Retreat Centre, where they engaged in year level reflection and small group discussion over three days. This was a large but rewarding undertaking. Students valued the opportunity to contemplate their own lives and evaluate their relationships with friends, family and teachers. As the year progressed students were heard to say: “that Retreat made a big difference to our whole year level!” At the direction of the Principal and organisation of Mr Pender, we saw the introduction of Retreats for Year 7 and 8. In groups of two homerooms the boys took a day away from the

College to focus on their personal journey; their beliefs and values within their friendships and families, leading to a focus on their relationship with God. A highlight of these Retreats was the facilitation given by Year 11 students in the small group discussions. Each day culminated in the celebration of Eucharist. The Year 9 and 10 year levels gathered at Syndal Baptist Centre under the guidance of the Lasallian Youth Team.

Student Wellbeing In 2015, our students have been actively engaged in a whole range of activities offered at the College that help promote wellbeing. Mental health refers to a state of wellbeing in which a person can realise their potential, cope with the normal stresses of life and make a valuable contribution to their community. Our students are encouraged to develop positive and respectful relationships with their peers and teachers and are highly valued as unique individuals. The College promotes wellbeing by emphasising the need for growth, self-discovery, personal accountability, resilience and self-care. The counselling service is an integral part of wellbeing at the College and has provided support to a significant number of students and parents across both campuses over the academic year. Karina Dubroja has been a welcome addition to our small but dynamic team, and she quickly settled into her new role on the Tiverton campus, bringing a high level of professionalism, innovation

and energy to the role. Maree Keel has continued to work closely with the senior students and staff on the Kinnoull campus. Many students have accessed the counselling service over the past year; presenting with a whole range of issues including: anxiety, mood disorders, family discord, grief, peer relations, motivation and a variety of other concerns. Some highlights of

Student Wellbeing Team: Jacob Cobucci, Nigel Menezes, Raphael Canty, Jude Joseph and Ms Maree Keel

the calendar year have included the Mother’s Day Breakfast presentation, meditation sessions for both staff and students and coordinated lunchtime activities such as the Student Wellbeing Team and Lego Club. On occasion, the opportunity arose to step out of the counselling office to deliver preventative programs related to stress management, bullying and peer relationships; these activities were tailored to meet the developmental needs of students in specific year levels. THE STUDENT WELFARE TEAM The Wellbeing Team facilitated a number of activities throughout 2015. Meeting on a weekly basis the team comprised members from both campuses and aimed to strengthen the Lasallian Brotherhood between older and younger students. Setting out with this aim in mind the wellbeing team organised a ‘random acts of kindness week’, with the primary school students encouraging them to complete a kind act for another child (eg let someone in front of you in the canteen line or write a thank-you note when someone has done something nice for you) and they organised an art project to hang in the sick bay office with drawings the students had completed. With a selected group of Year 8 students a lunch was organised where they played drama games and had an opportunity to laugh and have fun with their older peers. When the Voice of Tiverton competition was

conducted the Wellbeing Team cheered and supported the brave students who performed. This notion of an ‘extended family’ within the school is certainly something the

students helped to strengthen with their work in 2015. Ms Maree Keel and Ms Karina Dubroja College Counsellors

Coolies Last November 20 newly graduated Year 12 students and six staff members left on a trip of a life time. Our destination was Southern India with the goal to make a difference. We arrived in Chennai late at night and were overcome by the sounds and smells. For most the boys it was their first time travelling overseas and experiencing a culture that was very different from their own.

We were greeted at our locations with open arms from the Brothers who were keen to put us to work! Our day consisted of three work sessions, two in the morning and one after lunch. The work was tough, most days consisting of lifting bricks, sifting sand and demolishing walls. Both groups took it in their stride and completed the tasks with

The four weeks went past very quickly and before we knew it we were saying our goodbyes and farewelling our new friends to set off on our next adventure. The last two weeks of our trip was experiencing the sights of southern India. We enjoyed Christmas day in Cochin and New Year amongst the ruins in Hampi, but the highlight was the beaches in Goa.

After getting acclimatised for a few days it was off to our locations where we would be working for the next four weeks. The group was split into two with half based near the city of Madurai and the second near a city called Nagapattinum. At Madurai the project was to complete a renovation of ‘Benildus House’.This is a training centre for students in the fields of nursing, education and other vocations. At Nagapattinum the work consisted of the construction of extra rooms

Mission Action Day and Ian Oliver Award For most of the College, this year’s Mission Action Day (MAD) started just like every other MAD. For one member of the De La community however it was a very special MAD and one he will cherish for years to come. Mr Ian Oliver has been the convener of the Mission Action Day Committee for a very long time. In that role he has overseen the collection of more than $1 million for Lasallian Missions around the world. In his 40th year of teaching at De La Salle, Mr Oliver retired at the end of Semester 1, and as such this was his last MAD. Over the years monies raised by Mission Action Day have been increasing thanks to the generosity of the College community. Last year for the first time the College raised more than $100,000 and this year raised over 103,000. In recognition of Mr Oliver’s efforts as Head of the MAD committee, Principal Houlihan announced he was introducing the Ian Oliver Award for the boy who raises the highest amount of money for the day. “It is only fitting that the Ian Oliver Award should go to the boy who has worked the hardest for Mission Action Day. This award will ensure that the efforts of Mr Oliver are not forgotten.” Congratulations to Christopher Menara (Year 7), who was the inaugural award recipient.

Papua New Guinea In September 14 Year 11 boys full of anticipation and excitement set off to Papua New Guinea in what was to be a life changing experience. No one had been to New Guinea before and we weren’t too sure what to expect. When we arrived we saw a country full of life, colour and excitement. As we drove through the congested roads of Port Moresby to make our way to De La Salle in Bomana we were met with endless amounts of waves and people wanting to shake our hands to welcome us to their country.

the group with so much joy, laughter and mateship throughout the trip. As you begin to understand, being in PNG things don’t just happen like that, so we didn’t have any materials at hand and needed to make a trip to the local hardware. A PNG hardware isn’t your ordinary Bunnings or Masters; things were a little bit disorganised and chaotic, with lengthy waiting times!

A few days in to the trip we met our work sites. They were an old classroom that needed to be converted into a Year 12 common room, science labs that needed an endless amount of cupboards cut and fitted and a room that needed three doors installed. We also met the young local boys who provided

As tools and materials were gained work flowed and friendships flourished. Boys who were mere acquaintances became close mates and worked together as a team. We saw the best in each other and got the work done in traditional De La Salle style.

A highlight of this trip was going to Ower’s Corner, the start of the Kokoda trail — one of Australia’s most historical war sites. Being there and walking down the steep decline with tough terrain made us appreciate what the young Australians faced all those years ago and the strong relationships we have as Australians with the Papua New Guinean people. A visit to the Bomana War Cemetery compounded this even more with the hundreds of gravestones and the story each one told.

Br Paul Toohey (standing, left) and Archbishop Michael Wallace Banach, Apostolic Nuncio to Papua New Guinea with the De La Salle team.

Papua New Guinea is a trip that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. To see the smiles on the local’s faces and how happy they are for what they have is truly a massive eye opener. To see just how much of an impact you can make to someone’s

life as a Lasallian is very humbling; one of the young locals said to me “I love when you guys come, you change our lives” — a heart wrenching moment. This trip wouldn’t have been possible without the commitment of all De La Salle students to fundraising and the dedication of the 13 other Year 11 boys who were lucky enough to be selected to go. A special thanks to staff Tim Hogan, Warren Walker, Phil Dent, Chris Bryan and Christine Thompson who helped us along the way and made this trip something to remember. This trip was an experience I’ll never forget. Timothy Fierenzi Year 11

La Salle Green Hills The Philippines Cultural Exchange Program continued with the visit of nine students and three staff from our brother school La Salle Green Hills in Manila in April this year. On the last day of the visit the boys were asked to complete a feedback survey. Below is the response of one of the boys to the question, “What were the highlights of your visit to Melbourne?” 1. Going out to a park and learning how to play footy. 2. Spending time with my host family, my host mum is a very good cook. 3. Watching Grease with my host family. 4. Visiting Federation Square and seeing all of the art work, as well as the street art. 5. Going to The Big Issue and being touched by the message.

Year 11 student Jarred Fissenden wrote of his experience hosting his visitor: “The 2015 De La Salle cultural exchange with La Salle Green Hills was a huge success. Our guests came over in April and stayed for two weeks, taking part in various activities on weekdays and spending time with their host families on weekends. The boys experienced a wide range of programs and activities including a visit to the CBD for a talk at The Big Issue, a visit to Healesville Sanctuary and an overnight stay down at Torquay and the Surf Coast. Our guest Harvey was very appreciative, well mannered and keen to experience life in Australia. Life in Australia is completely different to that of the Philippines. I found it quite confronting on my trip to the Phillipines and Harvey was

equally surprised with Australian culture. Explaining to a friend the most basic of social norms in Australia makes you look at your own culture in a new way. Harvey was surprised at the relative wealth of all in Australia, for the Filipinos there is no ‘middle class’. To put it in simple terms, you have the rich and you have those who seriously struggle to make ends meet. The program ended with a great farewell night and our guests put on a great show (far better than our off tune version of the National Anthem when we were in Manila). I would strongly encourage younger students and their families to get involved with the exchange program. Mr Happ does a great job in organising everything and it is an amazing experience to host a student from another country.” I take the opportunity to thank the host boys and their families. The generosity, enthusiasm and support of the program has ensured that the bond between our two Lasallian schools continues to grow stronger. I am so grateful for the support of the staff at De La Salle and in particular Mr Andrew Wozencroft and Miss Maria Hawley. Mr David Happ Philippines Cultural Exchange Coordinator

Applied Learning In Balgo The VCAL boys, Tim Hogan, Tom Buick and Jamie Keith a highly recommended builder from Sydney headed up to Balgo, a remote indigenous community in West Australia. Arriving in Balgo was a bit of a culture shock, being in such a remote area surrounded by desert. It was obvious the community was not wealthy, but the kids were happy and made us feel welcome. The Brothers helped us settle in nicely. As a group our task was to build a small extension for one of the volunteers’ houses. We worked with the Balgo Building and Construction students. At times we found it a little difficult to communicate with the students which presented new challenges in teaching them our building skills. After work hours we saw the Balgo Gorge, the Pound

(where the Great Sandy and Tanami desert meet), rock art, heard traditional aboriginal stories and received our own personal indigenous ‘skin names’. This trip would not have been possible without Mr Buick’s organisation, Mr Hogan’s willingness to take us to events and Mr Jamie Keith’s building and leadership skills. We all hope that Balgo shapes up to be an annual trip for future Year 12 VCAL classes. Sam Holzer, Adrian Orso, Shamus Haigney, Liam Coombs, Nic Cooney and Michael Griechen

Lasallian Service Years 9 boys travelled to far-flung venues around Melbourne as part of Lasallian Service Week. An eye-opener for most, it raises awareness of other community members’s situations and provides practical opportunities to live out the values of the Lasallian ethos. The following reflections give some insight into their experience. I had called Brimlea Aged Care about the Year 9 Lasallian Program and then later arranged a visit. It was so easy to do! Daniel Tompa At first I was a bit nervous. Upon arrival at Mecwa Care we were kindly greeted and made to feel at home. After a short time I felt more connected and involved within the community. It definitely enriched my values of compassion, caring and spirituality Harrison Cook The week made me more confident and more independent. I enjoyed learning about people’s live and their

past experiences. I would definitely do the week again. Liam Bonato We went to a “disability disco”. I thought everyone would just be sitting in their chairs or at best using their walkers. Instead they shook about in their chairs, smiling at their favourite songs and those who could talk, sang. It changed my views entirely. Mackenzie Chant The environment was safe and fun, the staff were friendly and welcoming and the kids were awesome. All I had to do was play with the kids for five whole days. Hardly working! Zach Cobbuci

It was a fantastic time! It was a break before the school exams. I heard some wonderful stories and met some great people. The Lasallian Service Week should be forever part of the Year 9 curriculum. Lachlan Joseph

Tiverton Report One busy year draws to a close and a new year of continued challenge and opportunity beckons. Whilst it would be all too easy to focus on developing further the improvements and achievements of 2015, it is important that we stop to reflect on and celebrate the moment. The year began with 189 Year 9 students enrolled for their final journeys at Tiverton; these same boys now find themselves preparing for the next important chapter of their formative years at Kinnoull, taking the knowledge, memories and experiences of Tiverton with them. We celebrate the senior students of our campus and wish them the best of luck for the transition to senior school. De La Salle is all about getting involved, extending oneself in partnership with others and having fun along the way. As you peruse this issue of Blue and Gold it is difficult not to be impressed by the

volume and variety of activity that has occurred throughout 2015. Then again, this is what one should expect from a Lasallian school. This year the Tiverton students raised $60,000 for Mission Action Day. This is an incredible achievement with all students and parents to be congratulated on such a tremendous gesture of generosity. It is easy to speak of being Lasallian and to respect the work of the Brothers from afar, but efforts like this confirm a tangible support of their mission. Tiverton campus is defined by an incredible amount of enthusiasm and generosity. Whatever the cause in need of support there are always

Year 9 Ambassadors hosting a tour of the College

students at hand willing to respond. This type of attitude and activity, the extreme generosity of staff members and the support of parents all combine to develop a powerful body that can indeed make a difference to the plight of others less fortunate. What a wonderful thing to be part of! The tradition of welcome barbecues at Jan Juc continued for the new Year 7’ students and their parents. It was heartening to see so many parents attend the concluding session of the camp and supporting their sons through the process of transition. I extend my thanks to them for the effort this took; it is an important time in the life of a Year 7 boy and to be able to share it with parents makes it even more poignant. The commitment of all stakeholders in the unique campus that is Tiverton has made 2015 the great year it has been. Whilst it is easy

for me to reminisce over a series of snapshots for the year, none of it would materialise without the hard work of many people — without the committed staff, the responsive students and the supportive parents. My sincerest thanks and gratitude to all of the Year Level Coordinators, Mr Chris Martin, Mr Shane Mackintosh, Mr Shaun Buckley and Mrs Gemma Austin for their dedication and the time they have given students in their respective year levels. I wish to also make mention of Ms Karina Dubroja who started at De La Salle this year in the role of Tiverton Counsellor: her contribution this year cannot be understated. Last but certainly not least, I wish to thank the Tiverton staff, who as Homeroom Teachers and subject specialists continue to be professional in their teaching, generous with their time and

unwavering in their commitment to the young people they teach. A staff that is united in its endeavour has the best chance of succeeding in the all important enterprise of education. It has been my privilege to work with such a staff this year and I wish everyone a happy and holy Christmas and a safe and enjoyable vacation break. Mr John McAlroy Head of Tiverton Campus

DE LA SALLE COLLEGE BLUE AND GOLD 2015

TIVERTON CAMPUS FROM A STUDENT’S PERSPECTIVE Tiverton is a place that encapsulates the ‘De La Salle spirit’, a spirit that I find is unique to De La and the envy of other Colleges. It is the foundation of our wonderful school, shared by all — a spirit that drives us to become better students and better people. Some struggle to comprehend the lengths that every De La student goes to in order to help others. Whether it be raising money to help build schools overseas, simply helping a mate who has fallen over, or cheering as loudly as you can when you see someone from De La charging down the back straight, students at De La Salle are always part of a community. Tiverton campus is De La Salle’s junior campus, accommodating students from Year 4 to 9. The campus allows students to express themselves through a variety of different areas such as sport, music, debating and drama, just to name a few. The numerous sport carnivals — swimming, athletics, cross country and football lightning premiership — allow students to display their talent to their peers. We also have a wide variety of ACC (Associated Catholic Colleges) activities in which to participate, including public speaking, debating and a wide variety of sporting opportunities where we can shine at what we do best. Whether you are a sprinter, footballer, or good at

Campus Captain Joel Fernando and Vice-Captain Dalton Di Medio

chess, there is an opportunity for everybody. Historically, De La Salle has been successful in a number of ACC events largely due to the De La Salle cameraderie that exists within these teams. Being a part of a De La Salle team means you are in a positive and friendly environment. I am constantly surprised when I find out the talents of others in my year. Amongst us we have sportspeople who excel, musicians who can perform in front of a packed house, singers, dancers and writers, all a part of our network of trusted friends. Tiverton to me is more than just a campus. It is a place that is unique, a place where everyone feels that they belong and a place where everyone is happy. It provides young men all the opportunities needed to be successful in life whilst combining a brotherhood and camaraderie that cannot be bought. Joel Fernando Campus Captain

Primary I joined De La Salle College at the beginning of Semester 2 and have enjoyed getting to know all the Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 students. I have had the pleasure of working with the experienced teachers in the Primary school, Mr Tim Curran, Mr Ray Leetham and Mr Terry Atkins. In Term 3 Mr Terry Atkins took a wellearned break and during that time, Mr James Feather stepped in to continue the great work in the Year 6 classroom. I have witnessed the genuine interest that these teachers take in broadening the experiences for their student and the ways they embrace and nurture their individual skills and attributes. On a daily basis there are a number of older students who return to their Primary classrooms to visit and reminisce about years gone by. The Lasallian charism is alive. The Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 students have worked hard and achieved so much. They have participated in a number of special events this semester including excursions, the Book Week parade, camps, sacramental programs — Confirmation and First Eucharist under the guidance of College Chaplain Mrs Joan Ferguson, the Swimming Carnival, cross country and other sporting programs with Mr Michael Ryan and Mr Ken Stokes. They have also demonstrated their talents in music, directed by Ms Cindy Frost and Ms Kelly Williams, art and drama under the guidance of Mrs Mary Finn, LOTE Italian with

Signora Vanessa Marolda, Signora Christine Cooper and Professoressa Emma D’Angelo, and the Wellbeing program with Mr David Hale. The weekly assemblies have also been a highlight as each class showcased some of the great things they have achieved. It is wonderful to see the students enjoying the many aspects of learning offered at De La Salle College. I am very proud of the students and enthusiastic about continuing the programs that Mrs Gemma Austin, our Primary Years Coordinator has implemented. I look forward to being a part of the primary team, working together with primary and secondary staff and parents to guide students in Year 4–6 in becoming resilient, innovative and engaged learners.

Grandparents Day

In July Primary students were treated to visits from their grandparents, parents and friends. The morning was full of stories and sharing memories and there were many comments about how learning and education has changed over the years. Some student activities included completing a ‘Personality of the Week’ about their special guest; a comparison on their grandparents educational experience and the current student activities of today; hand tracing; puzzles and other special activities. The morning was a wonderful experience for all present.

Year 4 At De La Salle College, the Year 4 class is special because we are the beginning grade level of the school. When we all arrived in Term 1 many of us had never met. It was fun to get to know all of our classmates and our teacher, Mr Curran. He is a great teacher and very funny. Mr Curran entertains us and he loves everything about SPACE! He has surprised us with his many talents, especially that he has taught himself to play the twelve string guitar and his juggling performances! In Term 1 we got used to our new school and loved joining in with the Year 5 and 6 students for Friday afternoon sport. These students and the other teachers inspired us to do our best and encouraged us to spend time practising new things including our ukulele, Italian and art skills. In Term 2 we had some new boys arrive who we made feel welcome. We gave them a personal tour around our school and introduced them to many other students and teachers from Year 4–Year 9. We continued to work hard and helped each other at all times. In Term 3 Mrs Phillips came to our school and we all made her feel welcome. During the term we celebrated Book Week by dressing up as our favourite book character. We had activities in other classes and a Book Character Parade. Mr Houlihan (our Principal), Mrs Wreford (Mr Houlihan’s assistant) and Mrs Jost (our Librarian) were the judges and selected two students from each class as the best dressed characters. This was a very hard job because there were so many

amazing costumes. We had a lot of fun on this day. In Term 4 we had our school swimming carnival and joined with all Year 4–Year 11 students at the Harold Holt pool. We went into our team colours, Leo’s (blue), Austin’s (gold), Edwin’s (green), Mark’s (red) and swam in many different races including the Aquathon which was a one kilometre run and 50m swim. At the end of the day it was great to see so many people participating and giving their best. Edwin’s won the swimming sports this year! In term 4 we went to Phillip Island, did bike education and Lego Technics with Mr Atkins for Design, Creativity and Technology. It has been a fun year! In Year 4 we like: — making new friends and doing great things — Term 1 because we have our first photo — voting for Class Captains — working with Ms Frost, Mrs Finn, Professoressa D’Angelo, Mr Stokes and Mr Hale — having a lot of good specialists including music, art, Italian, PE and personal development

— Year 11 peer tutoring and activities with the VCAL and VET students — being involved in MAD – Mission Action Day — the projects and other classroom activities that we do with Mr Curran — all the sporting things we do including soccer, athletics, cross country, swimming — Grandparents day in Term 3

— PE lessons especially football and T-Ball — Lego club at lunchtime with Karina, the school counsellor — the Art Show done by the Year 7–12 students in the school — Book Day where we got to dress up — Mr Curran because he is a fantastic teacher but he says he is the ‘grumpiest old man we would

every meet’ He makes us laugh and cares about us all. He is entertaining and he is an awesome teacher. It is an honour to be at the school. We all love our new school De La Salle College! All of the Year 4 students

Primary Student in top 2 percent of Australia Trent Misquitta, Year 4, received a certificate of high distinction in the Australian Mathematics Competition! This places him in the top 2% of middle primary years students. “The true spirit of delight, the exaltation, the sense of being more than Man, which is the touchstone of the highest excellence, is to be found in mathematics as surely as poetry.” – Bertrand Russell (Philosophical Essays 1910) Thanks to Ms Emily Ryan, Mathematics Learning Area Team Leader, for organising this. Trent was very proud of his achievement when Ms Ryan presented him with this outstanding award at the Primary assembly!

Year 5 Year 2015 was a massive year for the Year 5’s. We started with the election of our class leaders, Andre Di Medio and Michael Steen. The Year took off with a focus on Australian History looking at how we started out as a country. We looked at the impact of weather on the environment and how our country copes with natural disasters. We did creative artworks, copying scoreboard numbers from suburban football scoreboards, then worked on some mosaic tile numbers in blue and white tiles. Literacy and numeracy drove the learning. In Term 2 our curriculum focus was Australian Inland Explorers. Year 5 researched people who shaped Australia in its fledgling years. In Religious Education we focused on The Mass, and My Mission in the Faith Community. We completed our tiles and made foam prints to print them on card. In Term 3 our focus was on the workings of government, making laws, voting and rights of the citizen. Our new class leaders, Will Richards and Abraham Pearce, embraced their roles with great enthusiasm. Our Religious Education focus

was on Sacred Stories and the topic Be Compassionate – Choose Justice. Literature Circles was the main reading focus of the term and everyone really loved this activity. Term 4 was the final quarter of the game. Our Integrated unit focused on Money, Money, Money, how to be be smart consumers and manage resources. We grouted our tiles, printed Christmas cards, did a Bike Ed program and wrapped up our sport with a T-Ball competition and a T20 Big Bash cricket day. The House Swimming sports were a big hit and the final assembly for our Year 12 students was a highlight. Student newspapers were the big literacy focus and every student did an outstanding job. Our new interactive whiteboard was a focus and it gave us different learning options. Year 5 was a year full of activity, creativity and learning in a variety of ways. It was different things to different people but it was one thing to everyone — it was ‘Lasallian’. Mr Ray Leetham Year 5

Primary Schools’ Parliamentary Convention On Friday September 11, four Year 5 students were selected to attend the Primary Schools’ Parliamentary Convention. Harry Coonan, Peter Orlando, William Richards and Daniel Van den Berg set off to spend the day at Parliament House in the Legislative Assembly chamber, being official parliamentarians for the day. The issue under discussion was ‘Young peoples’ voices are not heard in Australian politics.’ Daniel was asked to give a two minute opening address about this topic and more specifically focused on ‘ways in which young people can voice their opinions and beliefs.’ The four students worked on this together and after a number of rehearsals and rewrites the speech was ready and exactly two minutes long

(quite an achievement with so many ideas to share!). These students had an amazing experience and had a first-hand opportunity to spend time in the Parliament building and were all budding ministers. They had their say on the issue and were great ambassadors for the College. Thanks to Mr Ray Leetham who applied for this excellent opportunity.

Year 6 Year 6 has been a great end to the primary years for us at De La Salle College. It has been a road with lots of twists and turns (and the occasional bump). We have done a variety of things through the year that challenged all of us. Throughout the year we have been doing a lot of work on Australians at War because it is the centenary of ANZAC. For Mrs Finn as part of the Letters to Gallipoli production, we wrote letters as if we were on the front line in Gallipoli. Our class participated in the East Malvern R.S.L. Remembrance Day School Scholarship Program competition that invited all schools from the local area to create projects that represented Australians at war.

In Term 3, Mr Atkins went on longservice leave (our prayers had been answered!). During that time he was replaced by two people, our new Director of Primary School, Mrs Phillips and our Term 3 classroom teacher, Mr Feather. Book Week took place and we dressed up to celebrate — not only us, but also the Year 4 and 5 students as well as teachers! Seeing a teacher dressed up as Cat in the Hat will always stay in our memories!

The Year 6 students have played in many College sport events such as football, netball, soccer, cricket, swimming, athletics and weightlifting. There was a T20 cricket tournament we played in, as well as a football, soccer and the netball lightning premiership. The primary classes finally got a shot at participating in the swimming carnival with the whole school. There was also a House Athletics Carnival.

Camp took place and we were all ecstatic to get away from all the work at De La Salle (and have a break from our parents!). Wilson’s Promontory was our destination. Camp was a great experience. We all bonded, enjoying our hike up Mt Oberon and canoeing. We also appreciated the night walk studying the wildlife and meeting the occasional wombat. Another highlight was cooking and eating nachos and burgers. They were delicious!

At the end of Term 1 it was time for the annual Lasallian event known as MAD! This was to raise money for missions in Papua New Guinea and India. Incredibly, we managed to raise over $100,000 as a school. We were all sponsored and completed a 12 kilometre walk.

Throughout the year we have been learning musical instruments and performing to all of our parents at the end of each semester. We think Year 6 has been a great end to our primary years. It has prepared us for next year when we

take the big step from the primary to secondary school. We have had many laughs in our last year, mainly provided by our stupendous teacher Mr Atkins. Our word of advice to the future Year 6 students — enjoy being young, as these memories are the best ones, ones that you will keep! Noah Willoughby-Rotstein, Cooper Johnstone and Joshua Fernando

Primary Music The Primary Music Program at De La Salle provides a terrific opportunity for students to explore a range of instruments and discover where their talents may blossom. Whether it be the trumpet, strings, clarinet or flute, students learn, play and perform at the end of semester concert. When you think of learning an instrument, you may consider how to hold it, how to produce a sound or perhaps how to read music. These are indeed, some of the beginner skills acquired by students in the band program. The long view includes developing skills of endurance. For anyone who has held their arm out from their side for 3 minutes, you’ll know that

maintaining posture when holding an instrument can be very demanding. Students in the primary band program this year have developed skills as musicians, refining their rehearsal technique and performance etiquette. The concert involved a terrific range of performers and soloists. Ms Cindy Frost

Year 7 To begin a journey you need a starting point. For the majority of De La Salle students that pilgrimage begins at Year 7. Like every expedition it’s full of challenges and some surprises, but most of all the experience leaves an indelible mark in the heart and soul of each individual. As Year 7 Coordinator you live the experiences, excitement and disappointments with all the students. Afforded the qualities of hindsight and age I know the boy that begins De La Salle is very different to the young man who completes his studies at the College. What makes the role of a coordinator so special is witnessing the individuality of each student. St John Baptist de La Salle highlights in his writings the need for teachers to respect each student as a unique individual. Assisting students to realise their inherent giftedness, offering them an education that is creative and supportive is a constant motivation. Students’ enthusiasm for Mission Action Day and their embrace of social justice values has been satisfying to watch. Working together in newly formed Homeroom groups students quickly learn to collaborate and support each another for a common goal. I have seen the passion when students represent their College across a diverse range of sports; watched them participate in a range of music activities and one-off special events; observed them in the yard, socialising, laughing, enjoying

each other’s company in play. It is for me always a great source of joy. It has been a privilege to oversee their time this year. I look forward to watching these young men grow and develop in their journey through De La Salle College. Mr Shaun Buckley Year 7 Coordinator

Year 8 The Year 8 students participated in a variety of personal development programs throughout the year providing them with an array of new skills and knowledge. Anti graffiti and bullying workshops, Rock & Water, identity, and friendships workshops and participation in the Reach program provided students with valuable and practical life skills. As always, competition to make an ACC sport team and represent the College was very high this year. Congratulations to Mr Barns and the Year 8 Hockey Team who finished their season premiers for the second consecutive year. The Homeroom Lightning Premiership Carnival proved to be a very enjoyable day, with Solomon winning in extra time. The annual Year 8 Bush Dance was held at Presentation College Windsor in Term 4. The boys danced enthusiastically, displaying some fancy bush dance moves and making many new friendships on the day. The outdoor education camp held at Phillip Island during Terms 3 and

4 was a real highlight for many. The boys participated in many activities including raft making, surfing, beach soccer, coastal walks and fishing. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the students of Year 8 for their many efforts this year. I encourage you to make the most of every opportunity made available to you whilst at De La Salle. Finally, I would also like to sincerely thank the Year 8 Homeroom Teachers who have provided each student much support and guidance throughout the year. To Mr Murrell, Mr Happ, Ms Ryan, Mr Stokes, Mr Barns, Ms D’Angelo and Mr Hayward — a huge thank you for the

dedication and efforts you’ve made to your students this year. Also, to the many teachers and staff who contributed to the Year 8 cohort this year — thank you. Mr Shane Mackintosh Year 8 Coordinator

Year 9 The Year 9 students of 2015 were a group of wonderful young men who achieved many great things as they navigated their way through a period of their lives that brings rapid change, physically and emotionally. Students were given a number of opportunities to display their talents through a number of curricula and extra-curricula activities. In Year 9 all students participated in the Lasallian Service program. This is a program many students find extremely rewarding, as it is an opportunity for them to work closely with people in need. I would also like to thank students who gave up their time to represent the College as College Ambassadors — all performed exceptionally well.

It was particularly pleasing to receive feedback from the community complimenting Year 9 student behaviour and their eagerness to help. This is a credit, not only to students, but to the parents and teachers who work so hard to support and mentor these young men. To our Homeroom and teaching staff, thank you for your professionalism, commitment and good humour in your interaction with the Year 9 students. Head of Campus Report “Have great respect for the person you are with” St John Baptiste de La Salle Another year has passed quickly and as I write this our Year 12 students are about to embark on the first of their final exams. As they begin this last chapter of their school life here at De La Salle I want to pass on my congratulations to our College Captain, Elliot Fabris, and the entire cohort of Year 12 students on a wonderful year. It began in February when we took the Year 12 students to Rawson for our Lasallian Retreat experience where students shared stories, meals and activities with each other and with staff in a truly rewarding three days for all involved. This initiative will not only form an integral part of students’ faith formation at the College in the years to come but allows them to see another side of each other and staff in a relaxed atmosphere outside of the four walls of a classroom.

The Year 11 and Year 10 students have also embraced considerable changes across the course of the year and as our 2016 Leaders embark on a reinvigorated House structure I have already noticed a spring in their step. The new leaders have embraced this change completely and I know the rest of the student body will too, and rally behind these students as House rivalries once again resonate through the corridors of De La Salle. Opportunities come in many different

forms and the Year 10 students have had first-hand experience of this with the revised, broader curriculum on offer this year. Students have had more choices than ever before and I hope this means that decisions made about subject choices will be informed ones based around exposure to more opportunities and sound advice from parents and subject advisers. Civics and Citizenship, Industry and Enterprise, streamlined specialty English, Mathematics and Science courses have provided more breadth and more opportunities for more boys. This in itself is a great thing. Our students continue to amaze us with their willingness to assist those less fortunate and our Immersion Programs to Papua New Guinea and Balgo during the year were testament to the Year 11 and year 12 students who were fortunate enough to be selected to go. Our Coolies students have now ventured to India once again to continue the legacy started by Br Dennis in 2006. I wish those students all the best and ask our community to keep them in our thoughts for their safe return at Christmas. Current research on the values of physical exercise continues to be an important factor for men’s physical and mental wellbeing and our involvement in the Associated Catholic Colleges competition certainly goes some way to quench this need for physical exertion and competition. We had increased

numbers competing across all sports this year and we also had many teams competing in finals thanks to the dedication of students and coaches. Teams that made it through to finals in very strong divisions were the Senior Hockey, Cricket, Tennis and Table Tennis teams and the Year 10 Basketball and Table Tennis teams. All students should be very pleased with their efforts across the year. It has been three years since I arrived at De La Salle College and so I feel a special connection with the Year 12 students who started at Kinnoull at the same time. I have seen them develop from young students transitioning into the senior school with some degree of trepidation into fine young Lasallian men, who I am sure will venture out into a contemporary global world with the necessary skills to flourish in whatever field they choose.

As I make the transition to the Tiverton Campus as Director of Students 4–9 commencing next year I would like to thank the Kinnoull staff and students for making this campus a vibrant and exciting environment to come to work each day. I personally look forward to the challenges of a new role and I in turn challenge all of our students to do everything in their power to be the best they can be and always be conscious of those less fortunate than ourselves, asking always what they can do for the last, the least and the lost. Mr Luke Kenealy Head of Kinnoull Campus

Founder’s Day This year’s De La Salle Founder’s Day was a resounding success. Despite the inclement weather leading up to the event the rain held out for the better part of the day. The Kinnoull oval was transformed into a carnival with inflatable boxing and dodgem cars being enjoyed to the sounds of Year 11 DJ Lachlan Bulman. Principal Mr Houlihan and Mr Tim Hogan braved the cold weather to be dunked in icy cold water as the marching band played. Other events throughout the day couldn’t have been possible without the coordination of the Business Management students, who entertained and fed the masses with their business stalls; the primary students, who baked some delicious sweets and partook in the hip-hop workshop; and the Music Department, whose talented students performed to a packed crowd at the amphitheater.

Thanks must go to the Class Captains and College Leaders who helped the College celebrate the Founder, St John Baptist de La Salle.

Year 10 This year saw the introduction of the new Year 10 program, offering boys the opportunity to choose from an extensive range of subjects. One of the clear benefits of this new program has been increased opportunities for boys to choose subjects they are interested in and offer them pathways into VCE. Above all I really think the new program has helped boys be more prepared and committed to subject selection for Year 11. Over the course of the year boys have had the opportunity to participate in a wide range of ACC sporting teams, along with House Athletics, Cross Country and Swimming carnivals. Next year sees the senior school

move to a vertical House based system and this will further expand the opportunities for boys to become involved in leadership and develop relationships with students in different year levels. All boys in Year 10 had the opportunity to participate in the Morissby testing and I would like to thank Ms Fitzpatrick and all staff who helped in this process, as it really helped the boys gain a better understanding of possible future pathways. In June a small group of Year 10 students went to Queenstown and participated in a

range of adventure activities and I would like to thank Mr Clements, Mr Watty, Mr Wilson and Mr Larsen for accompanying the boys, who by all accounts had a great time. Finally I thank all parents for their support over the course of the year and wish all boys a successful transition to VCE. Year 11 Year 11, as always, provides some interesting transitions from Year 10 Kinnoull newbies to hardened Year 12 ‘stress-heads’. 2015 was no different, with so many new leaders emerging and embracing the imminent vertical pastoral care system of House groupings. The College is looking forward to our intrepid, pioneering 2016 leaders, Anthony Arceri (College Captain), Tim Fierenzi and Sean O’Callaghan (Vice-Captains) and House Captains: Michael Canny (Austin’s House), Sri Kumar (Edwin’s), Will Taylor (Leo’s) and Liam Murphy (Mark’s). Big congratulations to our debaters and musical

performers who led the way with resounding victories deep into finals or superb performance under pressure on the big stage. Some more of the 2016 leaders are such examples: Xavier-Joseph de La Masse-Homsy, Tom Ponissi, Liam Ramirez, Liam Kelliher, Will Wright and many others. Huge thanks to David Happ who deputised magnificently during the year along with the ever reliable Homeroom Teachers: Margaret

McPhee, Christine Thompson, Kerry Martin, Warren Walker, Brian Coulthard, Tim Hogan, and Daniel Charles. The quiet but smooth transition for Year 11 in 2015 is directly attributable to their care, expertise and commitment to their boys. The Lasallian Way. Mr Michael Petrie Year 11 Coordinator

Year 12 2015

To the graduating Class of 2015, this year marks an end to a remarkable group of young men. A group that has embraced the Lasallian ethos and supported one another along the journey. The Year 12 students have immersed themselves in

the life of the College, embracing the opportunities that arose on retreat at the beginning of the year and throughout the year. During their time at De La Salle College this group has always taken up the opportunities available; from

debating, ACC sports, musicals and performances, choir and social justice initiatives such as soup van, PNG and Coolies to name a few. Throughout the year many of the students were asked to stand up and show leadership throughout

the school, no more so than our College leaders, led by School Captain Elliot Fabris. Thank you to all our have done to not only make this a memorable year for the Class of 2015 but to also ensure the Year 12 Class of 2015 is remembered

for years to come. Thank you to all the parents and staff who have supported these young men during their time at De La Salle. Mr Rob Bonnici Year 12 Coordinator

E-Learning Year 9 students returned to the College after the Term 2 break eager to receive their new Lenovo Yoga notebook. An extensive orientation program was devised by the Director of Learning and Development, Mr David Alexander, and with the generous help of all Year 9 Homeroom Teachers, students began the term with a notebook brimming with the latest industry standard software including Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office. There were exhaustive preparations leading up to the orientation program by College staff. The Digital Learning Services team, led by Mr Luke Georgiou, took on the challenging task of preparing the digital infrastructure to support the notebook program which included faster and more reliable WIFI and brighter, higher definition data

projectors. Teaching staff began their preparation back in December 2014 after they received their notebooks together with a comprehensive training program. This initiative was supported by re-written curricula to underpin the goal of improving student engagement, independence and self-initiated learning. The overall aims of the notebook program together with the enhanced digital curriculum, are to develop active and passionate lifelong learners with 21st century skills, and to prepare students to take their place as valued members of the global community. The introduction of a carefully managed notebook program, based on the Windows platform, has led

to the development of diverse and engaging programs, constructed to meet students at their point of need. Teachers are keen to encourage models of learning that have clear learning intentions, challenging goals and a variety in learning strategies. A key mantra used throughout the year by the Deputy Principal for Learning and Teaching, Mr Mark Gustincic was Slow, Simple, and Reliable. His extensive experience with the introduction of notebooks to students has resulted in a robust and reliable system for access to digital learning. The primary use of the notebook is a vehicle for the development of a personalised, flexible, stimulating and contemporary learning environment. The notebook program will take until the beginning of 2018 to be fully rolled out. During the transition period, students at other levels, with a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), will continue to receive support and have access to digital material through Moodle (our Learning Management System), both at school and at home. Curriculum resources available through Moodle provide students with 24/7 access and offers flexible delivery of learning materials and assessment. Students are able to complete online assessment tasks and have access to further learning opportunities on demand. In addition, Moodle has become a powerful tool, enabling students to assume more responsibility for their own

education. It provides a context for ongoing and accessible assessment and reporting. With the introduction of the latest version of Moodle in 2016, all parents will have access to their son’s courses and materials. Not only will parents be able to view the academic progress of their son through the grade book but also get detailed information about homework, assessment dates and timely feedback about progress in class. The challenge laid down by Catholic Education Melbourne in its Strategic Plan 2015-19 is for schools to lead, “… new pedagogical models for learning and teaching, incorporating new technologies in the classroom and providing new learning spaces to meet the needs of students.” With the introduction of ultra-book

notebooks, revitalised learning programs and trained dedicated staff, De La Salle College is leading by example. Mr Paul Maxted Director of Learning and Development

English Italo Calvino once said, ‘A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say.’ Throughout the course of the year, the study of English and Literature has enabled students to dissect and analyse a variety of texts. They have been challenged, confronted and asked to look at everyday life and the world around them through a more critical and enlightened lens. In turn, students have been able to add to their own concept of reality, enriched their imagination and develop their sense of curiosity. Below are two poems from Year 10 Literature students. ‘The Quiet Deaths’ All was still and silent on the front. The breathing was heavy and woe to them, they, who had challenged Us! All for peace. Fighting, hard and long, breaking, ensnaring both in the tendrils of dreams of power, all for peace. All for peace. Nigh on the horizon, red, Russian, red, flashed all over,

Students were given the opportunity to listen to author presentations regarding the creative process and the way in which they go about crafting their works. James Moloney (A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove, Book of Lies, Dougie) addressed a range of student based questions in his Book Week presentation to Year 7 students, and De La Old Collegian Robert Newton (Runner) spoke to the Year 8 students as they were in the midst of studying his novel as a set class text. As part of the Year 9 English Unit ‘A Crazy Stupid Thing Called Love’, Complete Works Theatre Company performed scenes from the play Romeo and Juliet.

At Year 11, Shakespeare’s Macbeth created students ‘full of sound and fury’. Luckily, Complete Works Theatre was there to help them visualise key scenes through their performance in Term 2. The Year 12 students also experienced a live enactment of the play No Sugar by Jack Davis. This incursion was well received by the Year 12 students, as Eagle’s Nest Theatre is the only group to offer a production of this text.

Debating/Public Speaking The 2015 Debating Team of Victoria season was a fantastic one; many positives were derived from the hard work of both the students and staff that supported each A, B and D grade team. Our Year 12 team (A Grade) had a sightly disrupted season, however, a number of Year 11 students stepped up to the plate to keep the A grade chances alive. Whilst not making the finals, the Year 12 team still managed to finish the ‘home and away’ rounds in second place; only one loss off the top position. The Year 9 team were the next successful grade (D). Fielding two Year 9 teams, Team 1 finished on top of the ladder and went undefeated into the finals. Whilst successful in the first finals round, they were to be knocked out in Round 2.

Yet it was our Year 11 students (B Grade), who also fielded two teams that shone the brightest. Finishing second on the ladder, they strolled through round one and two of the finals; their dream run only coming to a head in round three. Our Year 11 Team 1 made it into the top 16 debating teams within the state. To top it off Thomas Ponissi (Year 11), who participated in both A and B Grade (Year 11 and 12) debates, took out the DAV Swannie Best Speaker Award for A Grade (Year 12).

PUBLIC SPEAKING De La Salle students were offered a number of opportunities to explore and strengthen their public speaking skills this year via the ACC Debating and Public Speaking competitions, the interschool Model United Nation Conference and the Lasallian Public Speaking Challenge. Our greatest commendations go to Jordan Burns (Year 9). Jordan took out the Year 9 Best Speaker and Overall Best Speaker awards at the Lasallian Public Speaking Challenge held in Term 4 at St Bede’s College.

Model United Nations Conference Another highlight of the year was student participation in the Model United Nations Conference. Held at De La Salle in 2014, St John’s College hosted in 2015. Students of Year 11 and 12 participated in the event, representing India, Cuba and France. The topic for the mock conference was, ‘Rights and Refugees’. The Model United Nations experience pushed students to think with greater insight and complexity. The conference emphasised the weight of responsibility on the shoulders of country delegates in trying to balance domestic and foreign interests in an international diplomatic setting.

Humanities 2015 has been another busy year for the Humanities Department at De La Salle. Each of the subjects including Civics and Citizenship, History, Geography, Legal Studies and Politics has provided a myriad of experiences for our students to further develop the necessary knowledge and specific skills in each subject as well as the key skills associated with the use of technology including research, organisation of information, collaboration, creative presentation of material and the sharing of results in both small and large group settings. From Years 7 to 12 across each of these areas, the students have been challenged to question, learn from and work with each other both in the classroom and whilst out on fieldwork and develop the vital writing and analytical skills necessary for life and work in the 21st century. The following pages document some of the experiences of the Humanities students in 2015. GEOGRAPHY 2015 The study of Geography from Years 7 to 10 investigates topics ranging from our Blue Planet and Hazardous Water to Feeding the World and Coasts and Human Induced Environmental change. In Year 11, the emphasis is on the Atmosphere and Vietnam as a Human Environment and then finally in Year 12 the students focus on the Murray-Darling Basin, Chapel Street

as a resource and then the Global Phenomenon of Human Population and HIV Aids. Fieldwork at these levels takes the students to sites including Gardiner’s Creek, Hampton, Sandringham and Rye beaches, Docklands and Chapel St Prahran. During these fieldtrips students have been required to use many skills that are important to geographers: observation, collecting, photographing, recording, sketching, counting, interviewing, describing, assessing, analysing and evaluating. This information is then used to complete fieldwork reports as part of their formal assessment. Year 8 students at Rye Back Beach with Teacher Mr Ken Stokes collecting and collating information on natural characteristics, human impact and management strategies

HOLOCAUST CENTRE YEAR 10 WW2 HISTORY Students studied the Holocaust as part of their study of WW2. They visited the Holocaust museum in Elsternwick touring the exhibits and hearing a talk from a survivor Max Stern, who is 94 years old and currently runs a stamp shop in the Port Phillip Arcade Melbourne CBD. Max was captured early in 1945 after his hiding place was discovered. He survived a 500 pound bomb that was dropped on the building he was hiding in as it failed to explode and later managed to survive his time in a concentration camp and the ensuing death march. It was a great experience to hear first hand from one of the remaining few survivors of this horrific event. Mr Andrew Wozencroft

VIETNAM VETERAN VISIT TO YEAR 11 HISTORY STUDENTS This year, the Year 11 History students have been studying the Vietnam War and to develop a deeper level of understanding, Ray Weston, an Australian radio signalman, spoke to the students about his experience in Vietnam and also the reception that he received in Australia on returning home. His stories were confronting at times, but funny, informative and the boys were captivated by his anecdotes.

The students had the opportunity to experience the weight of a pack that a soldier carried on their patrols, look at the types of booby traps that a soldier was confronted with and Ray’s overwhelming feeling of going to war. The boys will remember Ray and his message, that war is not always the answer, as a highlight of the semester. Ms Georgina Dwyer

VISIT FROM THE HON KELLY O’DWYER Kelly O’Dwyer, the MHR for Higgins, arrived for morning tea and Question Time with VCE Australian Politics students. Ms O’Dwyer generously fielded enquiries related to her role as a backbencher, a parliamentary secretary and local federal member. Students gained valuable insights from the experience which assisted them to think their own big ideas. MIDDLE SCHOOL HISTORY History from Years 7 to 9 takes our students on a journey from Ancient Rome to Japan under the Shoguns to Australia’s Involvement in World War One. Boys study aspects of historical periods and research technological advances, making models to demonstrate their understanding. LEGAL STUDIES Unit 2 Legal Studies is all about investigating legal dilemmas and understanding some of the issues in resolving civil disputes. Their research has enabled them to have a clearer idea of the pressures on lawmakers to respond to community needs. Students also chose a legal rights case and by establishing some key questions about the situation before the decision and the consequences of it they could determine the extent to which the High Court protects their rights and those of other Australians.

Narrow Election Yet Again Every year, the Coolies Mock Election provides the closest of margins whilst raising funds for the end-of-year working pilgrimage to India. This year the Communist Party’s Jackson Morgan only just edged out the Liberal Party’s Matthew Mattola, simultaneously providing $320 for the Coolies coffers and promoting the excitement that only a close fought election can provide.

(Shooters and Fishers). Thanks to these boys and their political allies for excellent, fair and entertaining publicity campaigns, election rally-day speeches and a wonderful promotion of the democratic and preferential system in action.

Congratulations to these boys on magnificent campaigns, along with the other impressive candidates: Matthew Foster (Motoring Enthusiasts), Tom Harkin (Greens), Daniel Tilbrook (Labor) and Young Sohn

Looking forward to more action next year which sees an Australian Federal election and the American Presidential campaign which we can only hope will be as exciting as ours! Mr Michael Petrie

Health and Physical Education Health and physical education play a critical role in educating the whole student. Physical education contributes directly to the development of physical competence and fitness. It also helps students make informed choices and understand the value of leading a physically active lifestyle. De La Salle’s Physical Education programs are essential in developing motor skills, physical fitness and the understanding of concepts that foster lifelong healthy lifestyles. Our students are exposed to a wide array of sports in the junior levels which are aligned with the Associated Catholic Colleges sporting calendar. Throughout the year levels, students continue to learn about healthy lifestyles, good eating habits and

the consequences of inactivity. VCE Unit 3 and 4 Physical Education students attend the Physical Education Enhancement day at RMIT Bundoora. Students are involved in GPS analysis, a series of fitness tests, and a workshop from RMIT Exercise Science researchers. This gives them the best possible opportunity to enhance their study of physical education in a world-class sporting facility.

As a department we aim to increase physical competence, health-related fitness, self-responsibility and enjoyment of physical activity so that they can be physically active. Thank you to all Health and Physical Education teachers for supporting the PE program and encouraging our students to live active lifestyles outside of the classroom. Commerce This year has seen a most significant growth in the availability of learning opportunities in the Commerce area for students, not just in the VCE but this year for the first time in the 7–10 area. That’s how the educationalist would describe it. The commercial world might describe the year ending December 2015 as “having resulted in a significant increase in turnover, growth in market share and some outstanding returns on investments with an increased client-focus, despite a slightly more difficult economic environment with some labour shortages”. Senior students at De La Salle College have long been interested in pursuing further studies in the commerce/finance/business sectors of tertiary study. In fact, over 40% finishing Year 12 students have gone on to tertiary Commerce studies each year for nearly a decade. It is currently the biggest single destination for DLS graduates. Students with an interest in commerce have had a wide choice in the VCE subjects of Accounting,

Business Management and Economics. Significant numbers of students have selected one or more of these as part of their VCE program. Commerce subjects have also been open to acceleration and some the College’s outstanding results have been achieved by accelerating Commerce students. Although these subjects can be quite theoretical, the learning is structured so that practical application of skills in real-life commerce setting settings

STUDENT INTEREST IN COMMERCE STUDIES IN 2015

is an integral part. For example, the Unit 1-2 Business Management students, working in groups, prepare a detailed business plan to finance and then successfully operate an actual small business. The small business is conducted as one of the activities on Founder’s Day with the challenge being to not only achieve a return of the start-up investment but also to generate a reasonable profit return on the investment (all profit going to the Coolies project of course). Many organisational skills are really put to the test in this situation.

The big development for 2015 was the implementation of the revised Year 10 Curriculum to offer (inter alia) two new commerce-based subjects for the first time. The first, Prices, Markets & Finance, is a mixture of economics, business management and a little accounting (budgeting). In all, students selected three full classes of the subject. Subsequent reviews found the subject a great success with the students. Of course, this may have had something to do with Year 10 boys finishing the course with an in-depth study of the task of buying and running a second-hand car. It looks like it will be even more popular in 2016 with four classes having selected it. The other new Year 10 subject offered was Industry & Enterprise

(work experience). This is actually a Unit 1 VCE subject and it provides a highly focused and individualised approach to choosing future careers. It includes 35 hours of work placement; ie work experience. The Commerce learning area is also very excited that some commerce skills and knowledge will be available to Years 7-9 in 2016 as one of the Immersion Programs offerings. The subject Taking Off will see students developing important skills in application to a task of researching, planning for and financing a major overseas trip. Unfortunately these will be skills for the future as an overseas excursion as an assessment device in Years 7-9 might not be financially viable. Mr Steve Young Learning Area Team Leader — Commerce

Languages It has been another fabulous year for our language students here at De La Salle! From Year 4 to Year 12, students have been very busy in our language classes — from competitions to immersion days, to tasting traditional Italian and French foods...and of course learning the language somewhere in between! Learning French and Italian at our College involves more than just sitting in the classroom. It is a journey filled with cultural and language experiences. Some of the highlights of our year have been captured below. FRENCH CLUB NEWSFLASH On 16 July, the Year 11 French students gathered bright and early in the Kinnoull canteen to translate the amount of organising within the recently launched French club into an actual event. This event took

form as a Bastille Day breakfast, which was celebrated in France only two days prior to our ‘petit déjeuner’. On offer to all who attended was a vast array of French cuisine, ranging from flavoured crépes to chocolate

croissants. When we arrived at the canteen, the aroma of French cooking and blissful French music led us to believe we were certainly in France. From this event we were able to glean a better understanding of the organisational skills and partnerships required to make such a ‘rendezvous’ successful. We hope we can use this new knowledge to create future events. Laurent (Lachlan) Bulman Alliance Française

DANTE ALIGHIERI POETRY COMPETITION The annual Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition was held at the end of Term 2. Our Years 10, 11 and 12 students of Italian are invited to compete in the poetry recital. De La Salle has always enjoyed great success in the competition,

and this year was no different. Many students received distinctions and merits in recognition of their hard work. Ryan Kinsella in Year 10 made it through to the finals and came within the top five of the state — an outstanding effort!

YEAR 10 IMMERSION DAY Our Year 10 Italian students were invited to an Italian immersion day. The day started off with a bus ride to Darebin Arts Centre, where students were greeted with an array of all things Italian. Students listened and learnt about personal language experiences and the the many benefits of learning a language. Students were then treated to a combination of delicious Italian cakes and live Italian music.

Each of us selected a topic, ranging from the benefits of solar energy, to the effect of hunting in Central America. We researched our topics and found an interesting photo or picture relating to them. We then presented what we had found to an assessor, and then discussed

our topic. We were quite nervous, but we each gave our best and came out feeling great. To top it all off, we went down the street and sat down to some pizza to celebrate! It was a great experience which we won’t forget. It improved our French skills so much. We thank the Alliance Française for letting us participate, and Mr Moran for organising the day. Libraries This year we welcomed two new staff members to the Library in the role of Library Officer, Mr Brian Hayes (teacher at De La Salle, and Teacher-Librarianship student) and Ms Heidi Garland (Librarian), replacing Ms Hermione Gilchrist during her maternity leave. They each bring a wealth of experience both from schools and other work environments, and we are already appreciating their skills, enthusiasm and valuable input to the continuous improvement of our Library service. There have been a number of improvements this year, beginning with a trial, and then adoption of, extended hours for the Kinnoull Library, which is now open until 5pm from Monday to Thursday each week. This has resulted in a trickle of students increasing to a flow as

the word spread, and we now host a regular contingent of around 15 boys each day. The Tiverton Library was open during the second week of the Term 3 break, for senior students attending trial exams. This year also saw the introduction of English Help in the Tiverton Library each Wednesday, along with the longestablished Maths Help. Our stateof-the-art Infiniti catalogue has been made more accessible (students need only to go to Moodle to find it), as well as more usable with several databases now prominently located

Primary students dress up as their favourite literary character for Book Week

there. Plans for a digital video management system and library webpage are also in preparation for 2016. The Fiction collections on each campus have been targeted this year for rebuilding, and it is evident in the increase in loans that this has been highly successful. New acquisitions numbered around 450 for Tiverton, and 150 for Kinnoull. Reading continues to be the most popular activity at recess and lunchtime in the Tiverton Library, and new comfortable furniture has been acquired for both the Tiverton and Kinnoull Reading Areas. In addition, an extensive range of Book Week posters has been hung in the reading area at Tiverton, brightening up the area and providing an historic overview of prize-winning Australian fiction. Students have also made use of the new facility to add reviews of books they have read to Infiniti, to assist other students. Our libraries are well-used by students to research, complete homework and print. Teachers regularly bring classes in to use the libraries for research and printing. Reading classes, Year 12 study periods, meetings and the Year 10 Reading Group are also located in the libraries. Displays of student work at Tiverton this year included a wonderful range of Year 10 skateboard art which attracted much interest, and the ever-popular Year 7 models of aspects of Ancient Rome.

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge for 2015 was completed by almost every Year 4 student, and congratulations to them. Thanks to Mrs Mary Finn for her outstanding efforts to achieve this result. Book Week 2015 “Books light up our world” was held in August, and this year celebrated the 70th birthday of the Children’s Book Council of Australia. Mrs Anette Phillips hosted a dress-up as a literary character event for the primary students during Book Week, which was a lot of fun. All students are encouraged to apply for membership of the Stonnington Library, handily located over the road from Tiverton. They will be made most welcome there, and it provides a wonderfully accessible adjunct to our own collections. Ms Susan Jost College Librarian

Mary MacKillop Enhancement Centre In 2015, the dedicated staff of the Mary MacKillop Enhancement Centre (MMEC) have worked consistently with students with special learning needs to assist them in accessing the curriculum. St John Baptist de La Salle said, “Know your students individually and be able to understand them” (Med 33.1). We believe that all students can experience success when learning outcomes are based on realistic and achievable goals. The words of our patron, St Mary of the Cross, echo the attitude and reflect the commitment of the MMEC staff, “We must teach more by example than by word” (1867). This year, the staff included specialist teachers — Mrs Gemma Austin, Mrs Eve McLellan, Mrs Jacinta Ryan, Ms Marg McPhee, Mrs Christine Thompson, Mrs Jennifer Bonnici and Mrs Courtney Walton (Semester 1), and Mrs Lynette McLennan (Semester 2) and Learning Support

Officers: Ms Michele O’Mahoney, Mrs Jackie McKinnon, Ms Muriel West, Mrs Freda Siomos, Mrs Gabrielle Windley, Mrs Melanie Livera, Ms Kerrie Harman, Mrs Robyn Miller, Mrs Carolyn Green and Mr Barry McLaren. This team of dedicated educators worked with students who have special learning needs, across all year levels from primary to Year 12. This year 65 students were funded under the Catholic Education Office LNSLN program and received in class support from our LSOs. They collaborated with teaching staff and parents to facilitate and support the individual learning needs of these students. Regular Program Support Group (PSG) meetings occur for students where issues of academic planning and pastoral care are discussed with parents. Decisions from these meetings are implemented by MMEC staff, parents and teachers, to enhance

student learning and maximise effective teaching. Many other PSG meetings also occur for other students with additional needs (SWANs) whose conditions are not funded e.g. dyslexia. Overall some students have modified programs, whilst others qualify for special provisions; in class time, during assessment tasks, and in exams. The MMEC facilitate these throughout the year, especially at exam time. The Literacy Support classes continued again this year, with four groups at Years 7 and 8, three groups at Year 9 and two groups at Year 10, with a total enrolment of 96 students. These students have experienced the expertise of the

MMEC teaching staff in assisting them to improve their literacy skills and, in Year 9, developing knowledge and skills in some Humanities areas. The Years 7 and 8 LSP curriculum was redesigned as an intervention program and evolved over the year, due to the data from regular literacy assessment. A number of students were referred to the MMEC for academic assessment and cognitive/ behavioural screening. Based on their results, some of these students were then referred to private specialists for further assessment. The results of these assessments assist in teacher planning and delivery of the curriculum for these students, which enhances their

success and boosts their selfesteem. I wish to thank my wonderful team for their caring dedication, perseverance and professionalism as they work to enhance the lives of our students. I also acknowledge the support from our Principal, Peter Houlihan, Deputy Principals, Tom Ryan and Mark Gustincic, Heads of Campus, John McAlroy and Luke Kenealy, and the Directors of Learning and Teaching: Lucy Russell, Rose Roe, David Alexander, and Paul Maxted. “To touch the hearts of your students is the greatest miracle you can perform” (Med 139.3—feast of St Peter). Mathematics The Mathematics learning area at De La Salle has been involved in a number of initiatives this year to develop student persistence and problem solving skills. Students and teachers at Year 8 were part of a Monash University study run by Professor Peter Sullivan on exploring the effectiveness of learning through engagement with challenging tasks, which were often open ended and required students to make sense of a problem themselves. 8 Soloman and Jerome were also involved in a maths team challenge, where students competed in teams of six to work on a variety of interesting maths problems. A group of eight students from each of Year 7, 8 and 9 represented De La Salle at the annual Maths Games Day, run by the Mathematical Association of Victoria. This is an exciting day of maths games and problem solving where students must work in teams to compete against other schools. Congratulations to the students on representing De La Salle so well, and a big thank you to Mr Heath Tregear and Mr Shardul Kaneria for accompanying and supporting the Year 7 and 8 teams. The Australian Mathematics Competition was held in July this year, with 281 students participating and achieving some excellent results: 81 credits, 32 distinctions and four high distinctions. A special mention to our four high distinction recipients — Trent Misquitta (Year

4), Jason Kim (8 Jerome), Kieran Ng (8 Dunstan) and William Wright (11 Dunstan) who, in receiving a High Distinction, performed in the top 2% of all students who completed the competition. A special mention to Jason Kim who also received the school Prudence Award for attaining the highest number of consecutive correct answers. Weekly Maths Help sessions have continued to run in 2015, with maths staff and some senior students giving up their time to help others. I encourage all students to make the most of this opportunity. Maths Help at Tiverton runs on Wednesdays and Thursdays and Sum-aid at Kinnoull runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Thank you to all staff and students who have been involved. Religious Education “Let us remember that we are in the holy presence of God.” Each time we pray at De La Salle we begin with that simple, yet powerful, sentence. All too often, in the rush of the school day, it can be said quickly without the proper thought it deserves. To take the time and consider what is being said, and to allow God to make God’s presence truly felt, is difficult for our young men. The teachers of Religious Education are tasked with helping the boys understand the Catholic faith and assisting them in their individual faith journey. As with the wider school curriculum, there is much change happening to the Religious Education curriculum at De La Salle Malvern. This year our Year 10 students were the first Year 10 students to undertake the VCE Religion and Society Unit 1 course.

This is the first VCE unit for most boys and has been a large step-up in their academic requirements. Next year, this cohort will undertake Religion and Scoiety Unit 2 (Ethics) and in 2017 undertake seminar days (in place of scheduled classes). For Years 7, 8 and 9 we have begun a renewal of curriculum and will begin rolling out new courses starting next year. These courses, in the future, will aim to recontextualise the Catholic faith and draw from the students’ own experiences to develop understanding. A student-centred approach will be taken, with less teacher directed learning occurring. Resources will be expanded and students will undertake a number of inquiry based learning projects. Year levels will have a yearly theme and each term will involve a confronting or

challenging question for the students to investigate. 2016 also sees a new personal development program commencing. This program will contain links to the RE curriculum and vice versa. This is an exciting opportunity to provide our boys and young men with the skills and knowledge required to be a 21st century man, while ensuring they live their life with the Lasallian ethos. Finally, I would like to thank all of my fellow Religious Education teachers for their hard work and dedication in developing and providing learning opportunities to the boys and young men in our care. Without them, Religious Education at De La Salle College would be nothing. Mr Chris Church Religious Education Coordinator

Technology This year with a major focus on design and with the introduction of new technologies that included 3D printing, students used a design process to provide a solution to a problem that included investigation and design, production, analysis and evaluation. In Years 7–9, students were introduced to various tools and equipment and gained confidence and the necessary skills, knowledge and language to use various materials that included timber, metals and acrylics and were required to produce a product to a stated quality that was both practical and aesthetically pleasing. In Year 10, students in both Materials Technologies and Systems Engineering often integrate various systems and processes to develop more complex products, with an emphasis on using ICT to assist in creating working drawings and developing testing procedures that simulate real life situations. They

access various materials and use more complex tools and equipment that include both stationary and portable power tools. VCE Systems Engineering and computer subjects Information Technology and Software Development allowed students to integrate different systems and explore problem solving methodology in the stages of analysis, design and development. This allowed students to express their creativity in developing complex programs as well as gaining an understanding in renewable energy. Mr Warren Walker Learning Area Team Leader Technology

Science What will tomorrow’s world be like? If the students today are the ones that will need to be prepared to participate in the construction of tomorrow’s world then what will they need? Where should they start? How can anyone today possibly help in such a massive task? What skills would someone need to do this wisely, with care for all the organisms that inhabit the Earth and the Earth itself? To me, only with a society full of scientifically literate people can such a society be built. That is the purpose of science in today’s world; to build tomorrow using the skills that are natural to science; wondering, questioning, hypothesizing, exploring, testing, inferring, persevering, discussing and concluding. To build a tomorrow worth living in requires a comprehensive understanding of the natural world and our humble part within it; something that the process of science offers. I hope our Science students are working hard to develop the skills they will need to help build tomorrow. Mr Peppe Di Ciccio Learning Are Team Leader Science

Visit from Professor Chubb On Friday 16 October Australia’s Chief Scientist Professor Ian Chubb addressed senior science students and teachers at De La Salle College on the future of science and why scientific development is critical to the progress of our country and the world. Professor Chubb made headlines earlier in 2015 for his recommendations focused on improving the teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in classrooms. As Principal Peter Houlihan commented in his introduction to the Year 11 students: “Professor Chubb articulates in convincing fashion the necessity of a sound

understanding of science in finding solutions to issues relating to the economy, environment, food production and health… Virtually all businesses will need to utilise technology and analyse complex data, to find and employ evidence to anticipate the changes of the future.”

VCAL It has been another big year in VET and VCAL with boys enhancing their skills in a range of course activities. VCAL 2015 has been a year of change —a new coordinator, new VET subjects and plenty of Applied Learning projects to keep the VCAL students engaged and prepare themfor the workforce and further learning. Our Year 11 boys kicked off the season with Hospitality, the first time the College has hosted this VET course, using the College’s excellent PAC kitchen. Boys received training from a professional chef and looked the part decked out in their gleaming chef uniforms. Students received competencies in hygienic practice in food safety, preparation and serving of espresso coffee, responsible service of alcohol and a range of associated skills

that can be used for employment opportunities in the future. From personal experience I can say our boys created some amazing meals under the guidance of our mentor and professional chef. Other projects were planned and trialled incorporating various strands of our VCAL Program. An example was the work our students carried out at the Yarraville Special School, organised by staff member Brian Hayes. Here our boys hosted reading classes, planned and built extended height planter boxes for wheel chair access, and helped with other projects to beautify the school. With VET, Numeracy, Literacy, Work Related Skills, Personal Development and the Work

Placement Program our Year 11 boys have positioned themselves to gain employment opportunities in future years. With a year of VCAL under their belt the Year 12 cohort were already well organised. Many of the them had established strong relationships with their work placement employer leading to school based apprenticeships, securing future employment in their chosen trade. Senior VCAL students were involved in the planning, landscaping and building of a De La Salle Primary School Garden area for all to enjoy. Our boys immersed themselves in the College Social Justice Program giving of their time, money and effort as well as using their new found skills working to improve

an indigenous educational facility at a De La Salle School in remote Western Australia. This commitment, coupled with our Dare to Be program, Resume Writing and Literacy Primary Schools visits has added to the development and

preparation of these young men for the workforce. We wish our senior Applied Learning boys success now and in the future. Mr Tim Hogan VCAL Coordinator

VET and Careers VET Vocational Education and Training (VET) has a long and proud history at De La Salle College. In 2015, there were over 90 students who undertook an internal VET course in Building and Construction, Interactive Digital Multimedia or Sport and Recreation. During the VET coursework for Sport and Recreation, the boys planned and implemented an Auskick Day for the De La Salle primary students, helped with the Dendy District Athletics Carnival and Football Lightning Premiership days as well as facilitating a personal training unit with some of the De La Salle staff members. Further to running the three internal courses, the College also sent around 30 students to external venues such as Box Hill Institute and Holmesglen to study vocations ranging from Acting and Electrotechnology to Plumbing and Technical Production. Studying a VET subject during the VCE years allows students to study in a more ‘hands-on’ environment and students can use these VET subjects to contribute to their overall ATAR score in Year 12. In 2016 this number will rise significantly with the introduction of a VET course in Year 10 which will be an exciting and worthwhile opportunity for the younger students. I know the boys will be looking forward to studying in an exciting and robust environment where they are not only challenged academically but can make new friends as well. It has certainly been a privilege working with students at De La Salle College throughout 2015. The premise behind all of the experiences for the students this year has been to develop skills that allow them to adapt to the constantly changing world and to be open to new ways of doing things. Year 10 students have had an introduction to the breadth of learning areas open to them in the VCE program, which allows them to have a plethora of options to choose from. The dynamic workshop ‘Shape your Destiny’ gave students the opportunity to reflect on their talents and hopefully to encourage them to pursue their dreams. The Morrisby Report all Year 10 students completed was able to inform them and their parents about their talents and abilities and has given them a good start in choosing future pathways.

Delasalle parents have shown not only that they are interested in their son’s education but they are also wanting to keep up-to date with the changes that occur in the VCE programs. We have had more than 100 parents attend the Year 9 and 10 PACTS evenings run by myself and Kerry Martin in the Kinnoull Library this year. ‘Following your passion’ has been the main message that I have taken away from the Year 12 course and Pathway interviews this year. Students are so confident in choosing future study options and career pathways. I have been envious, it has made me want to go back in time and have all these exciting choices ahead of me again. I would like to wish our 2015 Year 12 students all the best in the next step they take in their future. Mrs Caroline Fitzpatrick Careers Counsellor

DE LA SALLE COLLEGE BLUE AND GOLD 2015

Visual Arts Coordinator’s Report It has been an exciting year for the De La Salle Visual Arts team. The Visual Arts learning area continues to grow, to nurture talent, and to produce exceptionally talented young men. 2015 saw the commencement of two new subjects for our learning area, Architecture and Media – Inside the Newsroom. Both subjects proved to be very popular as Year 10 electives and added more diversity and depth to an already vibrant learning area. With the rollout of new student laptops our curriculum is adapting to embrace the changing landscape of artist creation, to create a modern and challenging learning environment. In Term 2 De La Salle College proudly participated in the second biennial ACC Art & Technology Exhibition. The event was held at the historic Abbotsford Convent arts precinct. The exhibition was spread across two galleries, ‘The Oratory’ and ‘The Ironing Rooms’. There were more than 200 items on display from Years 7 to 12 ranging from painting, photography, sculpture, furniture, video games and more. Our special guest speaker was The Hon. James Merlino MP, Deputy Premier and Minister for Education. Our student representative was Year 12 student Sam Powell. Sam proudly wore his College uniform whilst helping visitors navigate the bustling exhibition, and met Mr Merlino. There were in excess of 300 people in attendance on the opening

night, including students, proud parents and siblings and members of the ACC school leadership teams. In Term 3 the College held our annual Arts exhibition. Our staff worked tirelessly to curate a vibrant and eclectic show that displayed well the talents of our students. The College flute ensemble played throughout the night which added a beautiful ambience to the evening. This year the department introduced a new award at the show, the ‘Principal’s Choice Award’. The work of the award winner would be acquired by the College and be proudly displayed in the reception area for a year. Principal Peter Houlihan had an extremely tough job picking the winner. He thoroughly examined each piece in the show, analysing in detail every work. The award was given to Benjamin O’Shea (pictured below) from Year 11 Studio Arts – Photography. We congratulate Benjamin and look

forward to seeing his work on display. Term 4 saw our annual Media Awards Night. Our two hosts for the evening were Year 11 students Sri Kumar and Tom Ponissi, who entertained the crowd. The films were fantastic and all students should be commended for the time and effort they put in to making their productions. It was a great night and wonderful to see the talents of our boys up on the big screen. 2016 is going to be another exciting year. We are looking forward to the re-induction of the Year 7 Art program with a re-modelling of the primary Art program. As learning area leader of this department I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff for all their hard work and dedication this year. Mr Ryan Hayward Learning Area Team Leader Visual Arts

De La Salle student art on show More than 300 parents, teachers and students attended the opening night of the ACC Art and Technology Exhibition at the historic Abbotsford Convent. The exhibition featured over 200 works, including photography, sculpture, painting and media, from Years 7 to 12 students from across Victoria, including several works from De La Salle College students. Year 12 student Sam Powell’s piece The Death of Marat was one of the items featured in the biennial exhibition. The Honourable James Merlino officially opened the exhibition and congratulated the students on their efforts and spoke of the importance of a balanced

education and the value of embracing the arts. College Team Leader for the Visual Arts, Mr Ryan Hayward, said it was wonderful to see the work on display in such a professionally curated event. “It is great to see the ACC community come together, not in competition but in collaboration, to display the talents and creativity of our vibrant and innovative students. We eagerly await the next show in 2017.”

Music Coordinator’s Report Embarking on the journey of learning to play a musical instrument is indeed an adventure. Some instruments are easier to manage in their initial assembly and sound production, however the long haul of achievement and accomplishment is the same for any instrument. Whether through classroom curriculum or private lessons, I see students strive for excellence every year. I see the drummer working tirelessly with the metronome, the guitarist practising scales working on his agility in soloing, the budding songwriters and composers booking music rooms for rehearsing the band for the next gig, and so it goes. In isolation, we practice and together we perform. Our ensembles contribute to our school community through mass, assemblies and a range of unique events. Small ensemble

performances have been a key feature of this year. These performances provide a different opportunity for a musician. Large ensembles of concert and stage bands give a broad sound experience to the player; the smaller setting is intimate and requires a different skill set. It’s here that students often refine their sound as they are more exposed and must be accountable for balance, tuning, tone and expression. The Brass Ensemble has come to the fore this year. At both ANZAC and Remembrance services, the Brass Ensemble enriched the occasion with their music. In a lighter setting, they were also great roving entertainment on Founder’s Day. Flute and saxophone ensembles have featured at the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day breakfasts respectively, along with information evenings for prospective students.

The Music Tour In August 2015, 55 students from the De La Salle music department left on the annual Music Camp, this year travelling to Warrnambool. Over three action packed days, the Concert and Stage Bands, String and Guitar Ensembles and College Choir played nine shows to seven local schools.

Small ensembles are a wonderful way for students to explore repertoire for their instrument while refining their sound. Congratulations to our musicians this year and thank you for giving back to our community. Ms Cindy Frost Music Coordinator

The schools were much larger than our usual audience, which made for loud cheering and outstanding dancing. It was certainly worth the early morning rehearsal each week, preparing repertoire for the biggest annual event in the music calendar. Each show was student run. Our set up was down to 12 minutes and student leaders rotated through the MC role for each performance. Students took on their roles as stage hand, sound engineers, drum tech and roadies very seriously.

With a new venue for every show, students made the adjustments and carried out their jobs in the most professional manner. Every audience and every performance was unique and presented great opportunities to develop their musicianship and share their talents with the community. Spreading happiness and joy through music is one of the highlights of every Music Tour. Every musician, both students and teachers, should be commended for making this tour our best yet!

Drama Coordinator’s Report This year has been a particularly busy one for the Drama Department with new curriculum introduced in the academic area and new partnerships producing great theatre in the co-curricula part of our activities. What follows is a brief rundown of what we have all accomplished this year. Two new partnerships with Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) in Bentleigh and with Sacré Cœur nearby have seen the creation of two very successful productions in 2016. Our senior production with OLSH, Grease, involved more than 100 students; 80 on stage (although they didn’t all fit on stage and some had to sing and dance in the auditorium to the delight of nearby parents!), 10 in the fantastic band and 16 working backstage making the performers look great. Special mention must be made of the band who, led by Ms Cindy Frost, contained not one

professional, adult player. This is quite an accomplishment and a reflection of our policy of maximum student involvement. Grease is the first in a partnership of five yearly productions of which the second, Hairspray, is already in rehearsal. Our first of many annual junior productions with Sacré Cœur happened at the end of Term 2 this year. This exciting development is covered more in the panel to the right. There are exciting times ahead for Drama as a subject. Much planning and effort has gone into the new Year 10 Acting for Film and TV course which will be bigger and better still next year as boys learn the skills involved in acting for camera, film each other and learn about acting practitioners like Stanislavski. After much planning and effort from staff, Drama will now occur as a semester based subject

in both Years 7 and 8. Drama in the form of circus skills and stand-up comedy will be a part of the new Immersion Program. Meanwhile, the Year 9 course is being reviewed and enhanced and students will continue to be a part of ACC Drama Day where the boys take part in taster workshops in a variety of drama skills. Bi-annual Drama Night performances will also continue giving boys the opportunity to show their class work to their parents! The future for Drama in all its forms at each level is bright at De La Salle and we look forward to welcoming staff, students and parents to one or more of our many performances next year. Mr Andrew Murrell Drama Coordinator

Letters to Gallipoli More than 60 students from two schools, De La Salle and Sacré Cœur rehearsed for many weeks to produce this exciting piece of theatre. We at De La Salle are very excited to have formed an ongoing partnership with Sacré Cœur College to produce a junior musical/performance Piece each year. It was the turn of De La Salle to host it this year and Letters to Gallipoli was the result; a self-devised piece taken from actual letters that were written to the soldiers on both sides at Gallipoli. Produced and directed by Ms Mary Finn and her daughter, Tilly, a Sacré

Cœur student, it included script, dance, music and song and was enthusiastically received by audiences in the Performing Arts Centre. A junior production, involving Years 7 and 8, has not happened at De La Salle since 2012 and not with another school at that time. This is a great development for us and the next production, hosted by Sacré Cœur, is already in the pipeline and greatly anticipated.

Grease The College’s sell-out season of Grease at The Alexander Theatre was an absolute knock out. The biggest College production for some years, Grease was a joint effort of a new creative partnership forged between the College and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College (OLSH) in Bentleigh. The 80 strong cast led by De La Salle College’s Liam Gava as Danny Zuko and OLSH’s Gillian Lantouris as Sandy Dumbrowski put on a superb exhibition of acting, singing and dancing. Audiences were dazzled by the exciting repertoire under the musical direction of Cindy Frost and the tight dance routines choreographed by OLSH’s Gina Coatzee. Congratulations to our superb director Andrew Murrell.

Letters to Gallipoli Inspired by tragic events from a century past and sponsored by grants from the federal government and Melbourne University, De La Salle and Sacré Cœur created an original production Letters to Gallipoli in 2015. Words from authentic and composed correspondence formed the monologues of the men and women who breathed life into the Dardanelles campaign of the Great War, whether they be from Australia, New Zealand, Britain, France, Germany or Turkey. Through dance and voice a contemporary interpretation gave a new generation an experience of the poignancy of war and allowed our community to mark this centenary with relevance and respect. The concept behind this piece of theatre was ambitious for Years 7 and 8 but the maturity and skill of the cast and crew was exceptional, brilliantly choreographed by Matilda Finn, musically directed by Kelly Williams and monologues coached by Marg McPhee. The richness of multi-aged student artistic involvement, enhanced the production values, with Year 4 students making poppies, Year 6 students sewing sand bags and Year 11 students creating murals. David Happ liaised with students to complete World War I posters, and hundreds of empathetic boys submitted sepia toned letters to simulate the human impact of Gallipoli. Mrs Mary Finn Director

Sport Report 2015 saw the introduction of some new teams to ACC competition. For the first time in College history we fielded two teams in both AFL and soccer in Years 7, 8 and 9. We also reintroduced a 2nd XVIII AFL side at senior level. Whilst some of our ‘B’ teams struggled against tougher opponents I believe our ability to give a greater number of students the opportunity to represent the College is a real positive and will enhance the strength of our programs going forward. The creation of these new teams allowed for a greater number of boys to share in the privilege of representing their College. It is our intention to strengthen the College’s sporting program and this will only be achieved by giving more opportunities to students to participate in the ACC sporting competition. Our major carnival teams were very competitive in 2015 starting with our ACC Swim Team. Led by the dedicated duo of Mr and Mrs Windley the swim team enjoyed great success in 2015 and produced what should be a solid platform for future success. Whilst finishing the night in overall 4th position our junior and intermediate squads finished in 3rd place, setting the team up for an

assault on a top three finish in 2016. The Athletics Squad was competitive in 2015 with the highlight being our Under 15 boys, who won their division convincingly. We hope to again improve in 2016 and head back into the top three once again. We were grateful to have coaching assistance from Old Collegians in Peter O Shea, Alex Di Medio and Will Johns. Cross country was successful in 2015 with a large squad led with great enthusiasm by our senior boys. We had some great

runners throughout the day and even some boys who had limited preparation due to injury performed courageously. Outside of our carnival sports our fixture sporting teams had a great year. We were able to put out competitive football teams with our Year 9 A Team, making a grand final. Our Senior XVIII team had a large cohort of Year 11 boys play which augurs well for next year. The 2nd XVIII was reintroduced for the first time in a number of years and narrowly missed out on finals. Soccer is the number one growing sport in this country and that is definitely the case here at De La Salle. We had two teams represent the College at Year 7, 8 and 9 for the first time in 2015. Whilst our ‘B’ teams at times struggled there were a number of encouraging performances throughout the season. In particular our Year 8 cohort had a strong year and played an exciting and entertaining brand of soccer. Hockey has grown in profile and strength at De La Salle with a number of our teams performing magnificently. Our Year 8 Team achieved back to back premierships, a feat that has not been achieved in hockey at the College for a very long time. Our Senior Team was knocked out at the semi-final stage by the eventual premiers St Bernard’s. Most importantly our Year 7 Team had a great season and managed a number of good results.

Our Year 7 basketballers showed that the future of basketball is in good hands at De La Salle. They managed to win the 7A premiership and were narrowly defeated in the 7B final. Both our Year 9 and 10 teams had solid seasons with our Year 10 team only losing the one game (which, unfortunately, happened to be the final). The resurgence in table tennis continued in Term 3 with the introduction of the PAC as a home venue for College table tennis. New tables were purchased and more access to quality training was provided. As a result many teams performed extremely well, led by our Senior Team, which had some epic wins over the course of the season. Our Year 10 team made finals and every other year level was competitive. The sport is a great alternative to our traditional mainstream sports and it has been great to be able to lift the profile of it here at De La Salle. Finally our summer season sports finished what has been a very busy

year here at the College. At the time of writing the cricket teams were currently competing well with many teams looking at participating in finals. Tennis and Volleyball teams also enjoyed good starts to the season and an improvement in results across the board has been evident. Golf had a great year, finishing third in the Senior Championships but managing a comprehensive win in the ACC Junior Tournament. It has been a pleasure to participate as Director of Sport, coach, and sometimes just be a spectator at many sporting events in 2015. The passion which many of our boys display whilst representing the College is a credit to them and their coaches. I look forward to working with our group of dedicated coaches next year to continue to improve the delivery of our ACC Sporting Program and hopefully further increase the number of students representing their school. Mr Jon Edgar Director of Sport

ACC Golf Bede’s finished with 307 and St Bernard’s were clear winners on 292. Congratulations to Kristoff Soliven who won the De La Salle Open Golf Championship at Malvern Valley Golf Course in Term 1 with a round of 75. The team has a bright future as we have three Year 11 students and a very good Junior Golf Team which won the ACC this year, this puts us in great stead for 2016. Senior ACC Golf Team The Senior Golf team finished in 3rd place in Division 1 in the ACC Golf Tournament at Werribee Golf Course in Term 2. This was a fantastic result considering we didn’t have a Year 12 boy representing the team. The 2015 Champions were St Bernard’s followed by St Bede’s in 2nd place. All our players were competitive and

gave their very best. Oliver Smith was our best golfer on the day with a round of 76, Ben Paine 77, Kristoff Soliven 78, Nick Leontaritis 80, Pat Hounihan 83, Jordan Brasher 99, Zachary Mulholland 104 and Liam Kelliher with 107. The top four scores from each team are combined to form a final team score. We had a team score of 311, St

ACC Junior Golf Champions After a keenly fought out two golf trials, a nine member Junior Golf Team was finalised to tackle the ACC Junior Golf Tournament at Werribee Golf Course on Friday 9 October. Under the leadership of our golf captain Jordan Brasher the team was quietly confident that if we all played to around our best we wouldn’t be far away. Our golfers played the course very well with birdies and many pars that littered their score cards. At the end of the day we clearly were the best ACC Junior Golf Team of 2015 with a commanding win in the ACC Junior Golf beating last year’s winner St Bernard’s College. ACC Swimming I would like to congratulate the swimming squad for a fantastic ACC swimming campaign and our great performance in finishing fourth on our return to Division 1. While fourth place was a great result, the closeness of the contest saw us finish only 20 points from third place and 28 points from second. Clearly the field is now bunched behind the victors (Whitefriars) and I can see promising signs for us in the next 12 months. Congratulations to our two winners on the night, Kieran Ng and Charlie Aitken. Kieran was our sole A Final victor in the U/13 Breaststroke, while Charlie stormed home to victory in the U/16 Freestyle. Congratulations Kieran and Charlie. Our numerous and placings during the night emphasised our newfound depth and this was evident in being able to come third in both the Junior and Intermediate Cups. All in all, the future looks great for the team. De La is building a reputation as a nursery for fine breastroke swimmers, as shown by the number of school records broken on the night;

This year also saw the reintroduction of Championship Night, which was an important lead-up event and allowed us to select the best possible team on ACC night. In addition to providing valuable competition, we were able to determine the individual champions in each ACC age group.

ACC Athletics This year’s ACC Track and Field Carnival was the most hotly contested for some time. Parade College were able to defeat St Bernard’s ending their long reign of ACC dominance in this sport. Whilst we finished 5th we were in fact in touch with the leaders for much of the day. The most promising result came from our Under 15 team, who were awarded the age group champions, and our Intermediate Squad who placed as runners up. There were many individual highlights throughout the day. Listed below were some of our outstanding performers: Open: Team Captain Daniel Byrden won the Open 1500m Zac Hellyer won the open — Triple Jump and High Jump Under 16: Leon Lymbouris — Hurdles 1st place Under 15: Jared Williams won the 100m and 200m sprint double Under 15: Lachlan Menara won the Triple Jump and Long Jump Under 15: Harrison Gill — High Jump 1st Place Other solid individuals included Alistair Sutherland, Dalton Di Medio, Chris Ghersi and Ulyses Urban all placing well in their events. We look forward to season 2016 and building on the foundations laid in 2015. We have set a solid platform to work from and push towards getting back to the top of the ACC in Athletics. We are

currently engaging old boys from previous years to help with coaching and preparation and should shortly start seeing the benefits of this approach. All squad members would like to thank Mr Damien O’Shea, Alex Di Medio and William Johns for their efforts in coaching our squad in 2015. We hope they can continue to support the colleges athletics program moving forward. Mr Jon Edgar Director of Sport

The senior tennis team began the season with limited preparation but a very positive attitude coming into the first game against Parade at Parade. Unfortunately the season began with a loss but the players maintained their belief that we are good enough to compete with the better sides. All ACC matches were cancelled in round 2 due to the ACC heat policy, which would ultimately provide us with a bonus two points against the reigning premiers. We narrowly defeated St Bede’s Mentone in a very hard fought team effort and defeated an extremely undermanned Emmanuel team by 90 games.

Heading into the final round we needed to defeat Salesian to give us any chance of participating in finals — something the senior tennis team had not been able to do for five years. The team played exceptionally well and defeated Salesian convincingly and progressed through to the finals draw to play top side Mazenod. Throughout the year a rotational policy was used meaning every player had the opportunity to play singles and/or doubles. We continued to do this in the semi final and to the players’ credit against very strong opposition and the eventual Premiers, they pushed

Mazenod all the way, losing gallantly nine sets to six. The entire team should be extremely proud of their efforts representing the College so well. Special thanks to Enzo Hamilton (captain) for his leadership and the Year 12 players who represented the College across both their final years — Enzo, Lachlan Kafer, Nic Catrice, Leigh Phillips and Nick Supple. ACC Cricket draw with St. Joseph’s Geelong due to extreme heat. Our fourth round clash with the eventual premiers Whitefriars was a pivotal game. In our most complete performance for the year, tight bowling led by Elliot Vile and fielding by Tim Fierenzi resulted in a last over win, keeping the dream of back to back flags alive.

Senior Cricket 1sts XI Team Standing: Mr M. Rhoden (Coach), K. Horsnell, T. Fierenzi, Z. Grundmann-Perera, W. Taylor, E. Vile, E. Fabris (Captain), D. McCarthy, J. Lee Kneeling: J. Bartholomeusz, N. Korkolis (Vice-Captain), D. Melissinos, C. Byrne, E. Bradley.

The 2015 ACC season began with the traditional opener against St. Bede’s. Our performance in the field, somewhat lacklustre, led to us chasing 181. After being 4/11, a resurrection from Will Taylor (52) and Zac Grundmann-Perera (30)

saw some respect added to the score, but finished with us being comprehensively beaten. This left the 1st XI with little margin for error from then on. Round 2 saw the 1st XI travel to Parade College. Our season was

given the kick start it needed from an excellent opening spell from Dave McCarthy (4/5). Parade never recovered from this blow, scoring only 90cc. The De La boys made short work of the chase thanks a swashbuckling innings of 50 from Noah Korkolis. Round 3 resulted in a

In Round 5 we were hosted by Salesian. This match showcased the top end talent our side possessed — none more so than Year 11 student Will Taylor. His innings was an extension of the snapshot given in round 1. Will elegantly crafted his 101*off 77 balls. It was the first century achieved under coach Marty Rhoden over his eight seasons. Will was selflessly supported by Connor Byrne (45*), without which, he wouldn’t have had the chance to get to the special milestone. Three stunning catches in the field from James Bartholomeusz capped off a memorable day for De La. In Round 6 we faced bottom of the ladder team St Bernard’s, with our fate in our own hands. In a

performance that showed our minds had wandered to the prospect of playing in a grand final, De La went down in a day to forget. The last round of the season saw us host Mazanod. To have any hope of a grand final birth, a win was a non negotiable. A fantastic batting display led by Elliott Bradley (52) took our total to 8/242cc. A dominant bowling performance then proved too strong for Mazenod 10/95. This left the door ajar if results went our way. Upon hearing other scores, it was time to get the calculator out, with the top four teams finishing the season on 4-1-2, it came down to percentage. After a nervous wait, it was with sickening disappointment that the 1st XI fell agonisingly short of a premiership, by a gap of 0.04%, as the following week’s grand final ended up being a washout. Overall, 2015 was a very successful season for the College, finishing 3rd. A special thank you is extended to coach Mr Rhoden, and all players for making the year such a success. ACC JUNIOR & INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Term 4 was the business end of a busy year with a flurry of chess activity. We were to have started the term with our own in-house Tiverton Chess Tournament on 9 October which would provide a selection tool for the ACC Junior (Years 7 and 8) and the Intermediate (Years 9 and 10) Championships a couple of weeks later. However, the ACC event was brought forward

to 7 October, which meant we sent relatively untested teams to the Championships. We had our Tiverton event regardless. All events were run along similar lines, that is time-restricted (15 minute per player) Swiss format with seven rounds of play. The ACC event is run by ChessKids who supply all the equipment — pieces, boards

We tabled just one team for each of the ACC Competitions, both second division, with 11 players for our Intermediate Team and nine players for our Junior Team. The Swiss format means all players play in all rounds being paired against an opponent of similar win/loss ratio on the day. The team score comes from the aggregate of the top four players of each team. When you scan the results below, you will see that both De La teams ranked second on

the day, a very respectable result. In fact, our Junior Team was equal first until the officials were forced to decide with the fifth player’s score.

Our top players on the day were Tom McIntyre 8 Roland and Ethan Tambimuttu 9 Vincent. Mr Larry Evans Chess Coordinator

The Senior Volleyball season was one that promised so little, but delivered so much. Comprehensive victories against Salesian College, Emmanuel College and Parade College catapulted our Senior VI into a make or break finals series. De La Salle’s student-led mantra of making every point count was largely responsible for the momentum gained throughout their season. The question was, could we match it with Whitefriars College in the semi-final? Evergreen athlete Liam Bisognan and Team Captain Liam Chai had led by example all season. But if De La Salle College was to reign supreme, dominant talls Zac

Hellyer, Mitch Wildoer, Brodie Muller and Rupert Smith would need to rule the net, as they had done all season. On the back of some Sam Michael brilliance the first set went to the Blue and Gold boys. Alas, momentum in sport can never be predicted. Unfortunately a shift in momentum came in the form of a close second set loss. From there the game slipped out of our grasp. Our season could best be described as “so near, yet so far”. Well done to all the students who represented the College so impeccably throughout 2015. Mr David Alexander Senior Volleyball Coach

ACC Basketball ACC Basketball Premiers The future of De La Salle’s basketball program looks very bright with the introduction of 2015’s Year 7 group. We had a very large number of boys try out for the squad and the standard of players at the try outs was extremely high.

Year 7 Basketball A Team Standing: Mr J. Edgar (Coach), H. Zendarski, J. Lawless, A. Sutherland, D. Maurice Kneeling: H. Hawker, A. McGaw, J. MacKinnon, B. Higgins

Year 7 Basketball B Team Back Row: Mr J. Edgar (Coach), N. Martinz, S. Trimboli, H. Mahon, H. Langkau, L. Mackintosh, S. Kerr Front Row: M. Besnard, K. Hillemacher, T. Robinson, C. Menara, T. Richards, T. Nguyen-Vu

It was a difficult task to trim the squad down into the A and B teams. Once settled we went about the business of trying to win as many games as possible and give ourselves every chance of playing in a final. Our season in Division 1 A was defined by many close finishes. We started the season poorly against a well drilled Whitefriars College, going down 31 to 23. The following week we forced Mazenod College into overtime after trailing late in the match. We eventually ran out winners 47 to 42. Jacob Mckinnon was the standout in this game with a clutch play to take the game to overtime. We defeated our eventual grand final opponents 32 to 26 with Jack Lawless getting MVP honors for his work against the big men of Parade. Our next two games were very tight with a 2 point win against St Bernard’s and a 4 point win against St Bede’s before rounding

out the home away season with a convincing 66 to 22 win at Salesian. Our win against Salesian gained us a grand final berth against Parade. In what was a very entertaining match we prevailed in a thrilling 1 point win, the final scores DLS 30 to Parade 29. Our Year 7 Division 1 B team also had a very strong season but were unfortunately beaten in the grand final by a very strong Parade College. As coach we were able to rotate a number of boys through the B team throughout the season which demonstrates the depth of talent we have with this particular year level. I congratulate all Year 7 students who tried out for the basketball teams and those that represented the College on a fine season. Mr Jon Edgar Coach

Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships De La Salle has continued the long standing tradition of putting together a team to represent the College at the Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championship at Mt Buller. With less snow on the ground than last year and all weather conditions prevailing, 14 students from Years 7 to 11 participated in either SkierX or BoarderX on the Skyline course, which contained plenty of high speed banking curves and jumps. This year all our students completed the challenging and, at times, icy course to receive their individual times. Special mention goes to our five year veteran, Will Jones of Year 11. Will narrowly missed out on gaining entry into the Division 1 final (Year 11 and 12) by less than a second. We may see Will competing next year to better this great result.

Ski Squad Standing: Mr K. Stokes, M. Powell, A. Loo Yong Kee, W. Martin, N. Blizzard, T. Martin, C. Vandergriff, M. Bohl, C. Bird, M. Moolman, E. Powell, E. Crowe, S. Embrey, W. Jone, B. Williams, Mr S. Slavin

Due to late injuries, Ted McCarthy (Year 7) and Luke Barron (Year 10) had to withdraw from the trip and

we hope to see these students in the 2016 DLS Ski Team. Mr Stokes and Mr Slavin were joined by Mr Tom Ryan for two days to assist in the running of this trip. All staff served as officials on our competition days. Mr Shane Slavin Coordinator

This year saw the return of the 2nd XVIII football to De La Salle and it was met with overwhelming response. With over 70 players willing to represent the school in ACC football, players were literally lining up to represent the College. Both the firsts and the seconds showed they were able to mix it with the best in the competition. The 1st XVIII was ably led by Will Mackie and all of our De La Salle players were keen to follow him and build on previous years’ performances.

XVIII were able to take home some silverware with a stirring come-frombehind win against St Bede’s to bring home the Lasallian Cup.

Unfortunately due to the short nature of ACC a second loss puts you out of the finals race. However, the 1st

Mr Rob Bonnici Coach

The 2nd XVIII missed the finals by a whisker on percentage and had more than 45 players represent the College along the way. Congratulations to all students who played ACC football this year, to Will Mackie for taking on the role as Captain, and to Corey Lyons and Matthew Colak for making the ACC Football Team of the Year.

Year 9 football boasted a record number of students trialing for two teams in 2015, placing us in a strong position from the start. The A team kicked off its campaign with an inspiring come-from-behind win at St Bede’s, followed by comfortable victories in rounds 2 and 3. But it was round 4 when we really stood tall and made our mark on the competition. Facing the only other undefeated side, St Bernard’s, we kicked 11 goals to 3 in the second half to win by 10 goals and lock in a finals spot. It was a superb team performance. Unfortunately, we

couldn’t repeat those efforts a few weeks later, falling 5 goals short in the grand final out at St Bernard’s. The results were mixed for the B team. We lost our first two games, including a heartbreaking one point loss against Whitefriars which, ultimately, cost us a place in the final. However, we finished the season strongly, beating Mazenod by 10 goals and Parade by more than 100 points. Thanks to everyone who participated in Year 9 footy this year. YEAR 8 ACC FOOTBALL Our first game was against Parade College where we named our leadership group. Our vice captains were Nick Bufalo and Jaxon Stuart. Our captain was Sebastian Fernandez. The 4 points didn’t go our way losing by 5 points on the siren. The next week we headed off to Whitefriars College. This was probably our worst performance as a team, although we only lost by 12 points. The next week we played St

Bede’s, reigning premiers from last year’s competition. Our first three quarters were our best quarters for the season. We did lose by 37 but the scoreboard didn’t show our work rate on the day. Our season hit a high the next week when we absolutely belted Mazenod by 76 points. The last home and away round was a wet, cold and miserable day, but De La Salle pushed through and capped off a brilliant win by 7 points. We finished the season in 3rd place.

Most consistent players all year were Jaxon Stuart killing it through the midfield, Nick Bufalo smashing it in the middle and a good target up forward, and Hunter Pace, our leading goal kicker for the season. Also a big thanks to Mr Macintosh and Mr McAlroy, and goal umpire Josh Webb and assistant Liam Jenkins. Sebastian Fernandez

ACC Hockey The Senior Hockey Team had a shaky beginning to the season. We struggled to compete against the skills of Salesian who were able to better us, scoring 5 goals to our lonely 1. Determined to make a better fist of it the group hit the pitch for a solid training session, but the second match against Mazenod was again disappointing, 3-1.

Game 3 against CBC saw a change in our playing and our boys had a solid victory, 5 goals to 0. This victory gave De La Salle a chance for a final. And so it was. The rest of the season were victories, one against Emmanuel, 2-0, and the other over Parade, 3-1. These victories assured a finals berth for us and a chance at the premiership. The final saw us travel out to the ‘Snake pit’, to play against St Bernard’s College. The group were pumped for the trip and ready for the challenge. The team played amazingly as a group, and probably played the best game for the season. However, we were no match for St Bernards who outscored us 3-0. It was a disappointing final to the year, but we knew that we had given our all in that match. Congratulations to Cian Hutter and James Bartholomeusz for their leadership, and their contribution to De La Salle ACC hockey over the years. Liam Kelliher

This year’s premiership was immensely satisfying. We were able to defeat Emmanuel College who had emphatically defeated us in the first match of the season. To turn the tables in the final was due to a superb effort from all involved. The team was led by the indefatigable Elias Fernandez and he was ably assisted by Declan Edwards. Both boys demonstrated total commitment to the team and its objectives.

Curtis Sayers discovered a hidden talent for goalkeeping and developed a cult following. It was a pleasure to coach this team; the boys were enthusiastic and embraced the chance to play hockey in a competitive environment. But it was the spirit and camaraderie they displayed that was most pleasing. A hearty thank you to you all. Mr Gerard Barns Coach

ACC Cross Country The cross country runners always demand my respect. Rain, hail or shine they attend training during the cold mornings of Term 3 in order to represent their College in cross country running. In 2015 we were led by a large group of Year 12 boys who were very dedicated and demonstrated great leadership to the younger members of our team. I congratulate them on their fine leadership

and hopefully this culture will be embedded in the other members of the squad for many years to come. We had a very solid day this year at the ACC Carnival. It was one of the closest carnivals for a very long time with a number of colleges improving and results being the closest they have been for many years. Despite finishing in 5th position overall our point score was lower than 2014 which shows how even this year’s competition was. We had many great contributors throughout the

day, none more so than Ben Richter who returned from injury to still finish 2nd overall. Our squad was led very well by Captains Brodie Muller and Daniel Byrden who both placed in top 10 positions. We will look for a more solid contribution from one or two of our age groups in 2016 to push towards a top three finish. Mr Jon Edgar Director of Sport

St Vincent de Paul This year, the St Vincent de Paul committee achieved much in the spirit of its namesake; specifically, dedicating ourselves to serve the underprivileged in our community. Each Thursday we would meet to discuss and plan various initiatives that could practically meet the needs of the poor, both locally and beyond. Under the leadership of Ben McGaw, a very successful fund raising activity was designed to raise money for the earthquake victims in Nepal. Other initiatives included student-based weekly after-school-tuition classes that focused on helping students in Year 10–12 in subjects offered in the curriculum. The committee organised Year 12 student volunteers to assist each Tuesday afternoon with welcoming and the serving of meals at the Fitzroy Men’s Refuge, as well as Portrait of St Vincent de Paul painted by Henry Baker of Year 10

helping out with cleaning duties at St Joseph’s South Yarra, a local parish that actively cares for the homeless, refugees, addicts and the poor. On Friday 11 September, the committee organised a ‘Sleep-Out’ for Years 9–12 in the grounds of Kinnoull. This initiative attempted to raise staff and student awareness about the plight of the hundreds of people in Melbourne who sleep on the streets each night, as well as the influx of asylum seekers who have left their home because of terrorism or war. Not only was a significant amount of money raised on the night, but everyone who experienced the cold of the night and the hard asphalt found their empathy for the homeless dramatically increased. I hope that the ‘Sleep-Out’ becomes an annual event at De La Salle. Rev Graeme Pender Faith and Liturgy Coordinator

Parent Network This year the Parent Network has been very active in bringing the De La Salle College community together. In February we held a number of Welcome Drinks Nights for parents and staff in the Peppercorn Café. Principal Peter Houlihan addressed the Year 7 and Year 8–9 nights, with Head of Kinnoull Campus Luke Kenealy attending the Year 10–12 evening. For the Primary school we held a Welcome Barbecue on the Kinnoull Oval. Tim Hogan and the VCAL boys provided a barbecue of sausages and hamburgers as a fundraiser for the purchase of tools for their Papua New Guinea project. This year a Year Level representative system has replaced the previous Homeroom system. The Year Level representatives gave great support to the Parent Network committee. They assisted with major events and conducted their own year level events such as morning teas and dinners.

At the beginning of Term 2 we ran our second Mother’s Day Breakfast in the gym with more than 400 mothers and sons attending. This was the third major breakfast Julie Car had organised, and again the morning was a great success, with Year 12 leaders playing a role and the College counsellors being the guest speakers. In June it was time for a Winter Luncheon at the Racecourse Hotel. Mums and dads enjoyed a relaxed lunch and heard from guest speaker, Norhana Stepic. Our major event ‘A Day at the Races’ was held at Caulfield Racecourse in August. As people arrived they were charmed by Addison Rowland on his guitar. As well as a fantastic day of racing there was a fashion show by Myer Chadstone. We heard from guest speakers Samuel Hyland, Craig Williams and actor/ comedian

Jim Russell acted as master of ceremonies. Thanks to organisers Louisa Salmon, Cate Robertson, Sharon Herdman, Liz Scott and Eva Mihailidis, and all the staff at the Racecourse. Our second Father’s Day Breakfast was coordinated by Eric Quitt. The morning went off well with more than 400 guests. A highlight of the morning was guest speaker Darren Crocker, Assistant Coach at the North Melbourne Football Club. Another highlight was the touching words of College Captain, Elliot Fabris, who spoke about his father and their relationship. A fun ‘Girls Night Out’ event was held in October so our mothers could check out the latest in fashion. Four brave mums modelled in a parade by Veducci Fashion and there was beautiful jewellery by Missie Jewellery.

A new committee of 12, to be led by Cate Robertson, as President, and Eric Quitt, as Deputy President, was elected at the AGM in October. Thank you to the wonderful Parent Network Committee and the Year Level Reps for all your assistance. To all the volunteers, thank you for giving your time to help our community. Ms Cate Robertson President of the Parents Network Committee

Caulfield Race Day Caulfield Racecourse was again the venue of the annual De La Salle Race Day hosted by the Parent Network. The Peter J. Lawrence Room was alive with the excitement of a day featuring the latest fashion, delicious food and of course, a full card of races. Actor/Comedian and De La Salle dad Jim Russell entertained the guests as MC. The day was sponsored by Myer Chadstone and Melbourne Racing Club Caulfield. Principal Peter Houlihan congratulated the organisers and paid special tribute to jockeys Craig Williams and Sam Hyland, who shared their knowledge of the track with guests. As one of the major fundraising events on the College calendar the day would not have been possible without the hard work of a dynamic group of parents, especially Cate Robertson, Louisa Salmon, Liz Scott Jo McAuliffe, Eva Mihailidis and Sharon Herdman. We look forward to the 2016 event.

Mother’s Day Breakfast In May over 400 people gathered in the Tiverton Campus Gymnasium for our second annual Mother’s Day Breakfast. It was a sell out! It was fantastic to see so many students with their mums and grandmothers, joined by College staff, to enjoy a buffet breakfast and meet with other mums and students. During the breakfast we heard from College

Captain Elliot Fabris, whose very thoughtful speech outlined the all encompassing role of a mum. Elliot also spoke of his appreciation for his mum, Debra; for all that she does for him. Thanks to Jack Fogarty and Connor Rate acted as MCs, and Daniel Byrden and Connor for sharing the opening prayer and saying Grace.

Father’s Day Breakfast In August the College celebrated fathers and the important role they play in the lives of their sons with the second annual Father’s Day Breakfast. Fathers and sons gathered in the Tiverton Gymnasium at 7:30am for a shared cuppa and hot breakfast. North Melbourne Football Club Senior Assistant Coach Darren Crocker spoke about his AFL career and the lessons he has learnt through playing and coaching that the young men in the room could apply to their own lives. He also gave insight into the tactics and strategies that drive modern AFL play. College Captain Elliot Fabris finished the morning with a moving speech about his love and appreciation for his own father (Frankie Fabris, Class of 1976). Special thanks to the Parent Network, especially Eric Quitt, father of Cameron, Year 9, and Daniel, Year 7, who organised the breakfast.

I would like to thank all who contributed to this year’s Blue and Gold. I hope this journal not only reflects the vitality and energy of the College, but also the good will that flows between our students and the staff who mentor them. It has been gratifying to watch their interactions from the privileged position of editor, a position I have held since my first journal in 1993. I did not think then that I would watch over 22 more. During that time I have recorded triumphs and disappointments, arrivals and departures, but above all I have shared a continuity observable in the galleries of faces as brothers and cousins share the De La experience. It is a strange double vision — the long view of the workings of a College yet so intimate in close up. I would like to thank Br Lawrence, who always steps up when needed, Leah Hartmann for her razor sharp proofing, Kerry Martin for observations and support. Family and friends have asked the same question of me at this time of year — why do you keep doing such a project? My answer has never changed — I have something to take home at year’s end, and for the affection I have for the College. I wish you all well. Jon Hewett
