Library Weather Procedures
BOOK GROUPS MOVE FRIENDS WELCOME BEYOND THE LIBRARY PIPER KERMAN DCDL Book Groups are heading out of the library and into the community. Book groups are now meeting at local businesses throughout the county to discuss a variety of books. The first group to do so was the Powell Branch Library’s Wine Book Club, which met at a local winery to discuss popular fiction with a lighter mood. This quarter, it meets at a new location, the Daily Growler in Powell, with a new name, Books and Brews. In the same fashion, Delaware Main Library’s Books and Brews meets at Barley Hopsters to discuss bestsellers. For younger readers, the Powell Branch Library Teen/Adult Book Club meets at various locations that suit the theme of the selected book. If you’d rather stay in this winter, you can join in the discussion online. Join the Delaware County District Library group on Goodreads.com, and add your two cents to the thread of the month. In one way or another, we hope to see you this winter!
BABY, IT’S COLD
Winter weather is on its way. Should the weather grow mean and schools close, never fear. We won’t close until the County Sheriff declares a Level 2 Snow Emergency!
This January, the Friends of DCDL present Piper Kerman, author of Orange is the New Black, to speak on her memoir about the 13 months she spent in a federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut. In her book, which is the basis for the Netflix series, she explores the moving and often hilarious experience of incarceration and the intersection of her life with the lives of women she met while in prison. The exclusive visit will take place on Wednesday, January 20 at 7 PM in Ohio Wesleyan University’s Gray Chapel. Visit www.delawarelibraryfriends.org to order tickets. Prices are $35 for Premium Seating, which includes choice Premium seats at the presentation, priority placement for book signing after the presentation, and a photo taken with the author during the book signing. General admission tickets are $25. Books for signing may be purchased at Fundamentals Parent Teacher Store in Delaware. Call 740-3630290 to purchase a book, available to pick up now or at the event. All sales benefit the Friends of DCDL.

MEET NEW DIRECTOR GEORGE NEEDHAM It’s the start of a new chapter at DCDL as we welcome
our new director, George Needham. George comes to us from 16 years at OCLC, the Online Computer Library Center, where he worked on their mission to further access to the world’s information and reduce information costs. Before that, George has had a long career in Library Sciences, beginning with his undergraduate and MLS degrees from The University of Buffalo in New York. He moved to Ohio in 1984 when he was appointed Director of the Fairfield County Library in Lancaster. He’s no stranger to Delaware County, though. George and his wife Joyce live in the Powell area. Joyce, his wife of 23 years, is also well known within the Central Ohio theatre community. His step-daughter Kate lives with her family in Lewis Center, with kids attending Olentangy Local Schools.

George is excited to be working with the staff in this fast growing county. He has been welcomed not only at all the DCDL Branches, but has also met with community leaders at the Delaware Chamber of Commerce, Delaware Rotary, and the Library’s Board of Trustees. We’re very happy to have him at DCDL and hope you get the chance to say hello soon! His door is always open and visitors are welcome.

This guy certainly knows his stuff. He has appeared on Jeopardy! three times, and is a two-time Jeopardy! champ. George is a fan of classic hardboiled mysteries in all forms, whether it be books, radio broadcasts or movies. One of his favorites is the Humphrey Bogart classic, The Maltese Falcon. He even has a replica of the infamous falcon at home. He has a musical side as well, and has played guitar since junior high school. As a native of Northern New York, George is a fan of baseball and hockey. He currently cheers on the Chicago Cubs and the Columbus Blue Jackets, respectively.
