DelawaREADS: A New Orleans-Themed Community Read

Winter Reading Club this December and January

WINTER READING CLUB DELAWAREADS We have so much fun during Summer Reading Club that we thought we’d start an all-ages Winter Reading Club! Pick up a tracking bookmark from your DCDL branch between December 1 and January 31 and read books or attend programs, then deposit the completed log in the age appropriate prize entry box. Then pick up another log and start again! Each branch will have an Early Reader, Child, Teen and Adult gift basket to enter to win! Baskets include gift cards, toys, coffee or tea and, of course, books! Check out a stack of books from your To-Read List and snuggle in for a winter of reading!

The DelawaREADS program is back with a focus on New Orleans. In partnership with Delaware City, Buckeye Valley and Olentangy Local schools, we will be reading Drowned City by Don Brown. This graphic novel’s stunning illustrations tell the tale of Hurricane Katrina and community. A number of programs celebrating the city and regrowth of New Orleans will be happening at DCDL and in the schools. See the inside calendar for more information. DelawaREADS will culminate in a visit from author Don Brown to schools and the Library in March.

PUSH RECORD

Perhaps you’ve noticed the large black boxes hanging out at the Orange Branch and Delaware Main libraries. Those are the DCDL Audio Booths and they are open for business. The booth is equipped with an iMac, Audacity recording software, headphones, and a Blue Yeti microphone with a windscreen and pop filter. All you need to bring is external storage and your creative project! These sound isolation booths are great for podcasting, audiology testing, music recordings, webinars and much more! Try one out today.

COVER MODEL HONORING BRIDGET DAILEY DR KING

This issue of “Check It Out” features Youth Services Specialist Bridget Dailey cozying up to get her reading in for Winter Reading Club! She’s worked at DCDL since July 2015. The highlights of her day include performing during storytime, singing and laughing along with all the kids and their caregivers. At home, Bridget shares her love of storytelling with her husband, Brian, and their two children, David and Samantha.

MLK DAY 2017 DCDL IS OPEN

This January the Library is maintaining normal hours on Monday, January 16 while we honor Dr. King and all his work for peace and civil rights. Typically, all DCDL branches have been closed on MLK Day for staff training. This year, however, we will be closed the morning of Friday, January 13 for staff education. Branches will open that afternoon at 2 p.m.

Staff will now be available on Martin Luther King Day to pay proper tribute to Dr. King through programs and exhibits. Local poet and storyteller Rosalind Royall will share the importance of freedom and the legacy of Dr. King at the Orange Branch Library at 1 p.m. and at the Powell Branch Library at 6:30 p.m. Delaware Main Library will celebrate with tales about Anansi the spider to explore folklore in African-American history. Performer Rory Rennick combines music and unsual magic tricks with a dramatic reading. From January 9 through February 5, Delaware Main Library will host “Freedom: A History of US,” an exhibit from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. It features the evolving concept of freedom from founding through the civil rights movement. The exhibit highlights speeches and letters written by King and other figures. Join the Library for an open house with light refreshments on January 16 from 2 to 5 p.m.
