Fall into a few favorite things

This is my favorite time of year, bar none. The crisp mornings, the golden sunlight filtering through the leaves as they change color, and the tang of freshlypicked apples make autumn special. I was also one of those kids who loved the beginning of school. A new school year was when we would get to learn new things, and nothing was better than learning something new. That feeling never went away for me. I still enjoy that moment of excitement as I open a new book, whether it’s fiction or nonfiction, a children’s, young adult, or adult title, on my iPad, on paper, or in my earbuds. This past year I’ve learned about what it’s like to be a Syrian refugee living in Cincinnati from a YA novel (Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga), the agonizing decisions that went into fighting the air war during World War II from an audiobook (The Bomber Mafia by Malcom Gladwell), and the election that put Delaware’s own Rutherford Hayes in the White House from a basic hardcover book (Fraud of the Century by Roy Morris). Curiosity keeps the world—and you—young. Exercise your curiosity by using your Delaware County District Library.

COVER STORY This fall’s cover features Joy from the Outreach Services Department. Since joining the library in 2018, she has worked in the community making stops with the Bookmobile at senior centers, daycares, and at events like Toucha-Trucks and First Fridays. Joy also created and leads the Around the World in Books and Bites Book Club. We are so excited to welcome back in-person programming this fall! Each month the club reads a book that takes place in a different country or setting around the globe and then meets at a restaurant to discuss the book and enjoy the cuisine of that culture. This fall they’ll be enjoying Afghani, Italian & Texas-American meals. Check out what titles Joy chose on page 7! The Bookmobile has also been making some new stops lately. Our open air community stops are regularly scheduled around the county for you to visit the Bookmobile in your neighborhood. We set up for an hour or so for you to browse just like you’re in one of our libraries. You can register for a card if you’d like and check out materials on the spot. Read more on page 21.

EARLY LITERACY TIP by Kelly Cochran Youth Services Manager Getting kids ready for school starts well before you sign your kiddo up for Kindergarten! Read, write, sing, talk, and play with your kids often to build the skills they will need for school and learning how to read.

Read: Visit the library to refresh your stash of reading material.

You can also sign up for the Ohio Governor’s Imagination Library to receive a free book in the mail every month! Visit www.ohioimaginationlibrary.org to get started.

Write: Give your kids plenty of chances to create with crayons, paint, or sidewalk

chalk. Draw letters on the sidewalk with chalk and have your child trace them with a wet paintbrush.

Sing: Find fun moments to sneak in singing. Sing while you brush teeth. Sing while in the car. What songs do you remember singing as a child?

Talk: Fall is always full of fun adventures with plenty to talk about. Talk about feelings while making paper jack-o-lanterns. Talk about the leaves changing and how the weather affects what we wear. Talk about what they love and are thankful for.

Play: Fall also has a bunch of opportunities for dress-up and imaginative play, which

is full of learning and early literacy skill-building opportunities! Work together to build a cosplay costume to submit to Great GeekFest and encourage your child to pretend to be that character. Join the Great GeekFest at delawarelibrary.org/ggf.

STAFF REVIEW by Hannah Simpson Communciations Specialist Throughout this issue of Check it Out we’ve prepped you for every version of back-to-school, but not all of us head back to class in the crisp fall air for a new beginning. No, many of us only get that by opening a book and heading back that way. Here are a few of my favorite campus tales, but beware: I tend to like my academia how I like my coffee — dark!

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

Desperate to leave his working class California upbringing behind, Richard shapes a new identity for himself and enters the sphere of an elite classics department in a small New England college. The tight-knit, charismatic, and eccentric group delve into schools of thinking that broaden their horizons, yet lead them to their baser human urges. The group dynamics and Tartt’s masterful writing made me savor every last word and left me thinking of the novel years after my initial read through.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

This is Bardugo’s first adult novel and she deftly weaves a dark tale of magical realism into the distinguished lore of Yale’s secret societies. Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the sole survivor of a multiple homicide in Los Angeles but has mysteriously been chosen to receive a full scholarship to Yale provided that she works with the Lethe, a magical house that monitors the other societies at the university. Under the mentorship of Daniel Arlington, the Lethe try to keep the societies in check but as their occult activities grow so does their threat. This is great read for October or any adult who loved the Grishaverse from Bardugo, but wanted something more.

Party Girls Die in Pearls by Plum Sykes

Though the title may not scream fluff read, compared to the other two on this list, Party Girls Die in Pearls is a breeze. This mystery takes places in 1985 Oxford during the first weeks of classes when a determined first year student finds herself swept up in a murder investigation, ballgowns, and lots of champagne. Despite the murder, there’s plenty of dry British humor and sarcasm as our girls Ursula and Nancy looks for a killer and try to make Oxford a home away from home.
