Dig into STEM with hands-on learning Last year, the Delaware County District Library opened the Maker Annex at Willis Education Center on West William Street in downtown Delaware. The Annex, a collaboration with United Way of Delaware County Strengthening Families and Delaware City Schools, is a makerspace where people get hands-on experience with many of the tools of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Revolution. The various offerings at the Annex are described elsewhere in this issue of Check It Out, but for a moment, I want to talk about why we do this. To borrow a description from our friends at the Cincinnati Public Library, “A makerspace is a place where creative people can gather, create, invent, and learn.” For most of public library history, we primarily supported those who learn by reading. We added video and audio over the last few years to assist those who favor those learning styles. Basically, we supplied people with books and other materials so they could go home to learn. Now, we’ve developed ways to help those who learn by doing, providing access to the tools that allow their imagination to take tangible form. The public has responded, to the point that we have already adapted the operating hours of the Annex. Check out the Maker Annex and give your inner Grace Hopper free rein!

COVER STORY Say hello to our “Check It Out” cover star Tom Gisler. You may not see Tom at one of our traditional library branches, but swing by the Maker Annex and he’ll be there to create with you. As the Maker Annex Page, Tom is well versed in all of the Maker Annex’s technology, which includes vinyl cutting, laser engraving, 3D printing, sewing machines, robotics kits, laminating, and more. This spring Delaware Library will be participating in the COSI Festival in Delaware. Because of that, you’ll see a bunch of STEM-focused programming available for all ages. Keep an eye out for more information on the COSI Festival as we head into warmer weather. Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach
Read alike: “Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?” by Caitlin Doughty Roach started her writing career as a columnist, which is how “Stiff” came to be. She has the ability to take interesting (and disturbing) topics, and make them light and humorous, while still being based in fact. With chapters like “A Head is a Terrible Thing to Waste” (about how a body donated to science can be dismembered and shipped separately) and “On Human Decay and What Can be Done about It” (about how forensic scientists really learn to identify a 10-day-dead body vs. a 10-year-dead body) this is a good book for those curious enough to find out what happens to a body that is donated to science.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
Read alike: “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down” by Anne Fadiman Another true story told by a science journalist, this book will make your heart ache for Henrietta and the turmoil her family lived through. Known only to the science world as HeLa, Henrietta was a poor, Black, Southern woman suffering from cervical cancer, whose cells were taken from her without consent and developed into one of the most important tools in modern medicine. HeLa cells helped develop the polio vaccine and uncover secrets of cancer, and yet the Lacks family never received a penny for her contribution to science. The book is as much a history of Henrietta as it is the author’s journey to earn the Lacks family’s trust and allow their story to be told.
