MEET THE NEW BOOKMOBILE
NEW BOOKMOBILE OUT ON THE TOWN
After 16 years of use and 106,000 miles, the Community & Family Outreach Services Bookmobile retired in January and a new Bookmobile joined the DCDL family. The new vehicle boasts a maneuverable 24’ length, the best fuel economy in its class, full-height electronically operated “bus doors” for patron entry, walls lined with shelving for library materials, eight removable book carts, and a lift available for both visiting patrons and the loading and unloading of book carts. To meet the growing need for community stops from the Outreach Department, the vehicle is also equipped with a staff work station and wireless signal booster for remote checkouts, a public address sound system, and a retractable awning for appearances at community events such as the local Touch-A-Truck program or neighborhood festivals. The department extends the library beyond its walls by bringing books, DVDs and other library materials to individuals and facilities such as preschools, daycares and senior citizen centers.

ORANGE BRANCH OUTREACH TAKES HOSTS HUMAN LIBRARY STORYTIME OUTSIDE On April 21 from 10 AM - 12 PM, the Orange Branch Library is joining a worldwide movement for social change by hosting our first ever Human Library event. The Human Library is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. It’s a place where real people are “books” on loan to readers and where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered. At our Human Library event, you could have a conversation with an amputee, EMS worker or person of Islamic faith. Human “books” can be checked out for 30-minute increments during the event. Our hope is that open and honest conversation will allow for those involved to have a deeper understanding of others within our shared community. Featured on the cover this month is Human Library organizer and DCDL staff member Amee Sword and amputee survivor Sara Kennedy. Learn more about the human books on loan at www.delawarelibrary.org.
The Community & Family Outreach Services Department has partnered with Preservation Parks of Delaware County this spring for a fun storytime in the park series! Join us on select Mondays for a story, music and short hike in the park. We’ll meet at 10 AM on March 19 at Deer Haven, April 16 at Gallant Woods, and May 14 at Blues Creek parks.
MISS CONNIE RETIRES
After 16 years with DCDL and over 40 years at other libraries across the country, Youth Services Manager Connie Pottle will retire at the end of March. Connie graduated from the University of Oregon, and has taught children the love of reading and storytelling in cities like Dallas, Memphis, Columbus and Delaware. Having spent her entire career in youth services, Connie has introduced thousands of children and their caregivers to the joys of learning, and hired countless creative and enthusiastic staff members. We love you and will miss you greatly, Connie!
