National Library Week in April

FRIENDS WELCOME TEEN TECH WEEK 2017 TROY CUMMINGS

The Friends of the Delaware County District Library are the happy recipients of a grant from the Robert F. Beard Foundation. This grant will be used to host a visit from Troy Cummings, author of the Notebook of Doom series. Cummings will be at the Orange Branch Library on Sunday, May 7 at 2 PM. Cummings will be speaking about writing and drawing monsters and will be available for book signing after he speaks.

National Library Week

April 9 - 15

Once a year we celebrate the way libraries enhance our lives. From National Library Worker Day on Tuesday, April 11 to National Bookmobile Day on Wednesday, April 12, there are many chances to celebrate libraries and show appreciation to your favorite DCDL worker. You can even recognize DCDL Stars! Keep an eye on DCDL’s Facebook page this week for more information on how to recognize a library worker in your life.

Each year libraries across the country host a Teen Tech Week. The initiative is sponsored by YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) and aims to spread the love and ethical literacy of technology among teens. The week of March 5 - 11 all DCDL branches will have something technologically fun and engaging for teen and tweens. Build a Tesla Coil at Orange, Powell or Main. Learn how to become a YouTube Star by creating a book trailer at the Ostrander Branch Library. Applying technology to the real world is also important. Teens have the opportunity to learn how to track weather and how the Delaware Police Department uses technology to solve crimes (and how those traffic speed guns work). Teens can also take a closer look at the world around them as they field trip to Ohio Wesleyan University and take a peek through Big George 2.0, a Scanning Electron Microscope!

COVER MODEL

This issue of “Check It Out” features Technology Specialist Corey McCaffery doing some vocal work with the technology featured in the DCDL Audio Booths. Corey uses the booths to create his podcast, Omitted. It takes an in depth look at stories of individuals in larger scale moments in history, like the Titanic sinking or the attack on Pearl Harbor. Corey lives in downtown Delaware where he likes to walk his rescue dog, Zane and take in local history.

Delaware Meeting Room The Delaware Main Library’s meeting room will be closed for renovation May 8 - 13. Included in the renovation is a SMART Board, which has been purchased for the Library by the Friends of the Delaware County District Library. The Friends supplemented the project with grants from the Delaware County Foundation and the Amos Family Fund.

DCDL and Delaware County schools are finishing up DelawaREADS in March with a visit from Don Brown, author of Drowned City. After weeks of reading and programs celebrating the city of New Orleans and graphic novels, DCDL is excited for Brown’s visit to the Delaware Main Library on March 15 at 7 PM. From New Orleans taste tests to graphic novel geek-out nights, teens have gained an appreciation for not only New Orleans and the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, but also the graphic novel format.
