Keeping you connected to the Delaware County District Library.

Volunteers make the LIBRARY STRONG This quarter, we’re celebrating two special observances, National Library Week and Volunteer Appreciation Week. It seems appropriate, if a little amazing, that these two observances should be the same week this year, April 7-13. Libraries were founded by volunteers. Our very own Delaware County District Library started life as a women’s reading club at the end of the 19th century. Many other libraries across the US have similar origins. Today, although we employ about 100 people, our volunteers continue to be a vital force within the Library. Dozens of high school students, our Volunteens, assist at events while they earn community service hours for graduation. Our adult volunteers decorate the Library, help update some of our communications channels, and keep the Library looking good. The Friends of the Library, volunteers all, manage our book sales, sponsor author visits, help underwrite the summer reading program, and provide supplies the regular budget doesn’t support. And finally, our seven trustees, appointed by the County Commissioners and the Judges of the Common Pleas Court, serve as volunteers without compensation. They’re responsible for setting and overseeing the Library’s policies, direction and budget. Volunteers and libraries are a winning combination for everyone!

COVER STORY The cover of this spring’s issue of “Check It Out” features librarian Andy Bartlett. Andy has been with the Delaware County District Library for 4 years working primarily with children around the county. He is the organizer behind this year’s Human Library. Organizing the Human Library calls for community volunteers as “books.” This year Andy found human “books” with topics like adoption, being Muslim in America, mental illness, gestational surrogacy, and living a waste free life. The Human Library is open for 30 minute check out sessions from 1:00 – 3:00pm on Saturday, April 20. Andy also organized an author visit from Mindy McGinnis. McGinnis will be at the Orange Branch Library on April 9 to talk “Blood, Brains, & Lobotomies.” This presentation covers the research behind her 2015 novel, A Madness So Discreet. It will delve into how doctors treated brain injuries in the late 1800’s and the different aspects of care for the mentally ill at that time. For more information on these programs and more read on or visit delawarelibrary.org/event. Be sure to check out our special spring programs featured in this issue.

STAFF REVIEW by Pam Taylor Circulation Manager While my title here at DCDL is Circulation Manager, I also purchase the Adult Fiction, Large Print, and nondigital audio titles for our collection, as well as facilitate two book discussion groups here at the Main Branch. The groups’ selections run the gamut from popular, well-reviewed titles to bold new voices, and even the occasional classic. New members are always welcome to be a part of our casual and spirited discussions. Come join us!

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

One recent selection that was especially popular with our afternoon group was the sweeping family saga Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. This novel follows the struggles and triumphs of a Korean family living in Japan from 1910 to 1989. It is a compelling tale of a family’s drive to flourish amid the harsh reality of being of Korean descent in Japan during this time. It is an engrossing, accessible, and at times heartbreaking, read.

Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson

Jenny takes us along for the wild ride that has been her life up to this point. Raised in an eccentric family, surrounded by bizarre bits of taxidermy, Lawson’s childhood was far from normal. She also suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, depression, anxiety, and other disorders. What makes the book so outstanding is how she owns every bit of this, and uses humor to not only cope, but triumph, over her disabilities. If you want to be inspired, while at the same time being doubled over with laughter, this book might be for you.

The Good Good-bye by Carla Buckley

Coming up this spring, we will be reading The Good Good-bye by Carla Buckley. This thriller involves a fire in a college dorm, the consequences of which expose family secrets of the two cousins at the center of the tragedy. The tale is made more compelling by the use of differing, first-person viewpoints in the narration. You will want to keep reading to discover what will be revealed in each new chapter. This book is highly recommended for fans of Jodi Picoult, and the domestic thriller genre, in general. Visit Pam at her book clubs at the Delaware Main Library on the first Tuesday of each month at 1:00pm and the last Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm. To see what titles the groups are reading, please visit our events calendar at www.delawarelibrary.org/event.
