CHECK IT OUT

Keeping you connected to the Delaware County District Library.

Going far together.

In this issue, you’ll read about a new initiative the Library is undertaking with Boardman Arts Park. This is just one example of the way Delaware’s community organizations work together to make this area such a great place to live and work.

Here’s a partial list of local organizations with which the Library has partnered in the past year: The Arts Castle, Preservation Parks, Delaware African-American Heritage Council, OWU’s Ross Art Museum and its Lifelong Learning Institute, Delaware County Historical Society, Delaware County Genealogical Society, People in Need, SourcePoint, Delaware Public Health District, and Delaware Emergency Management Agency. Of course, the organization with which we work the closest is our very own Friends of the Delaware County District Library.

COVER STORY DCDL is so excited to debut our new mascot, Percival the Unicorn! Percival — or Percy, as we call him — sprang to life in the Imagination Garden at the Orange Branch Library this winter. He loves the Library so we made him a brand ambassador for all of Delaware County District Library. You’ll find this mischievous unicorn all over DCDL, from surprise storytime appearances to parades and other community events. He’s extremely excited to meet everyone at the Unicorn Party on April 23 (see page 16 for more information). Learn more about Percy on page 14. And find stories about unicorns with book recommendations from Mr. George on page 21. For more going on at DCDL visit www.delawarelibrary.org/event

Collaboration makes it possible for these disparate agencies to share our limited resources while providing you with a wealth of opportunities and services. For example, DPHD and EMA made it possible for us to provide over 25,000 at-home COVID tests to County residents in 2021. An old adage tells us, “To go fast, go alone. To go far, go together.” The organizations of Delaware County are in this for the long game, so collaboration will definitely let us all go far.

EARLY LITERACY TIP by Melissa Dougherty Youth Services Librarian Help your little ones’ pre-literacy skills bloom this spring by trying out some fun tips and tricks.

Read: Kids love to imitate what they see family and

friends doing. Let your kids “catch” you reading, or set aside some family reading time when everyone can read a book aloud together.

Write: Try exploring different writing tools. Get some paint and paper, then collect

some items from your yard or craft supplies. Does a feather or pipe cleaner work better? Try using an acorn or straw. Using differently shaped and sized tools can help develop fine motor skills.

Sing: Tired of kids’ songs? Try sharing your favorite music with your children. My

toddler and I love to rock out to the Beatles, Taylor Swift, and Broadway musicals!

Talk: Talking with your little ones is important even before they can talk. Don’t know what to say? Try narrating what you’re doing. Tell them your favorite memories from your childhood or things you’re looking forward to in the future. Even when it seems like they’re ignoring you, their brains are making connections.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS Kids Cookbook Club (School-Age Children) We’re cooking up hand pies from “Baking with Kids” by Leah Brooks. With all supplies provided, kids will learn how to make simple and healthy food that tastes great.

You could turn on some music while they pick up their toys, but when you pause the song, everyone must freeze. Or you could pretend you’re secret agents on a mission while you run errands.

Library Construction and Closures

Liberty Branch Library Progress Update!

We have a few construction projects coming up at the Delaware Main and the Orange Branch Libraries that will require us to close these locations for a week or so.

Orange Branch Library: The parking lot is being replaced! Work is slated to begin the week of May 1*.

Delaware Main Library: The front sidewalks are being replaced! Work is slated to begin the week of May 15*.

Because these projects limit access to library entrances, the building under construction at that time will close to the public. Remember that you can turn in and pick up items at any DCDL location. The digital library is also open 24/7! *Dates are subject to change based on weather and other factors. For the most up-to-date information visit us on social media.

STAFF REVIEW by George Morrison Youth Services Librarian In honor of our new mascot, Percy, I pulled together this awesome list of unicorn stories for little ones.

The Very Short, Entirely True History of Unicorns by Sarah Laskow

Unicorns are real in our dreams, but why are there accounts of their existence in various cultures throughout history? Laskow’s book is very short and follows very true facets hiding behind the stories of the horned beast. Discover where and how we find unicorns in popular culture, historic lore, and even royalty. A delightful introduction to mythical non-fiction for school-age children and up.

Unicorn Thinks He’s Pretty Great by Bob Shea

Goat is not sure about a unicorn he knows. Unicorn seems too cool. Can Goat ever understand or even be friends with Unicorn? Have you ever felt like this about someone in your life? Celebrating how amazing others are because they are different from us can be a wonderful adventure. Laugh out loud with this fun read aloud picture book for Kindergarteners and up.

Uni Brings Spring by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

Follow Uni the unicorn as the joy of spring is coming. All the animals of the forest are excited. Oh no! Winter’s icy grip holds tight on the seasons. Can Uni use magical unicorn power to save the day? The series of picture books, board books, and readers offer many options for your unicorn fan. This enchanting reader has a large text size perfect for early school-age emerging readers.

Pacey Packer, Unicorn Tracker by J.C. Phillipps

Pacey is a regular kid with an imagination that fills her life with escape. Now she has to journey through a Wizard of Oz-esque quest in the land of unicorns when her sister is whisked away from their home by a unicorn. Pacey is aided by her sister’s stuffed animal unicorn with an attitude. It keeps getting more ridiculous in the best way, right? Can Pacey save her sister from evil unicorn danger? Check out this new Graphic Novel series for 3rd graders and up.
