Keeping you connected to the Delaware County District Library.

Take the library WITH YOU THIS SUMMER
Summer is the time for relaxing and living easy as the sunshine lifts our spirits and brightens our world. Is there a better way to enjoy this season than by taking advantage of all the goodies that your library has to offer? Maybe I’m biased, but I don’t think so!
One of the things you might not want to do when you’re on vacation is plan ahead. So let’s say you get to the beach, or the lake, or to camp, and suddenly discover you didn’t bring along enough reading materials to while away those languid hours. Never fear! No matter where you are, the library is as close as your mobile device. You can continue to use Overdrive, Libby, Kanopy and Hoopla as long as you have a web connection. Download a few e-books, audiobooks or movies, and enjoy. What happens if where you happen to be has no internet service? If you have cell phone service, one of our wi-fi hotspots can connect up to ten devices to the web, free of charge. We check these hotspots out for two weeks at a time. To paraphrase the old American Express ads: “Your library card…don’t leave home without it!”

COVER STORY This issue of “Check It Out” features an out of this world little reader named Marceline! Marcie’s mom, Jenny, works at the Orange Branch Library as Assistant Manager of Youth Services. Marcie will be turning one this summer! She loves visiting the library branches for Babytime and dancing along to the fun songs we sing. This summer she’ll be enjoying music from Joanie Calem and bopping along at Music and Movement. As always, there’s something for everyone this summer. Not just at programs, but in our Summer Reading Club, too! Kids can win a cute tote for reading six hours, and they’ll get a a book to keep once they’ve read 12 hours. Adults can get in on the fun, too, by reading at least 4 books or attending programs to be entered to win a prize! Bookmarks and reading logs can be picked up at any DCDL location or downloaded from the library’s website. For more information on these programs and more, read on or visit www.delawarelibrary.org.

STAFF REVIEW by Jenny Ho Orange Branch, Assistant Manager - Youth Services
The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield
Chris is a young boy who dreams of becoming an astronaut and exploring the universe. Unfortunately, Chris is terrified of the dark. One night, Chris watches the Apollo 11 moon landing and realizes that while space is dark, it is filled with lots of beautiful and amazing things! This exquisitely illustrated picture book is inspired by astronaut Chris Hadfield’s real-life experience that is sure to encourage children to follow their passion even if it means facing their fears along the way. I love this book’s real-life ties and its connection to a fascinating moment in our history!
The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex
If you’re like me and love a scrappy, strong heroine and prefer your alien invasions on the more humorous side, then you will love this book! The True Meaning of Smekday takes place in the aftermath of the Boov invasion of Earth and follows the adventures of Gratuity Tucci, an eleven-year-old girl in search of her lost mother. Her journey across the country is filled with surprises when she encounters a rogue alien named J. Lo who hitches a ride and places Gratuity in even more danger! The reader is in for a bumpy ride on this quirky, mad-cap sci-fi road trip! If you love audiobooks, check out the audio version of this one, read by Bahni Turpin. Her delivery of this story truly brings it to life. I frequently cite this selection as my favorite audiobook!
Hidden Figures, Young Readers’ Edition by Margot Lee Shetterly
You’ve seen the movie, now read the book! In this special young readers’ edition of the bestselling adult book, readers learn the amazing true story of four African American female mathematicians at NASA who helped launch astronauts into space! Readers can learn even more of these fascinating women’s backstory and how their story fits in the context of issues of the time like segregation, the civil rights movement, sexism, the Cold War, and the space race. We discussed this book at one of my Bookworms Book Club meetings at the library and it remains one of my most well-attended and lively discussions to date. This is the perfect book to spark important discussions and get kids thinking about the STEM field as a career!
