What a CRAZY ROAD it’s been...
This past spring we experienced something none of us ever expected to see, a nearly complete shutdown of our society. We sheltered in place, avoided crowds, watched the daily briefings with Governor DeWine and Dr. Acton, and longed for a day when we could get back to “normal.”
Like nearly every library in the country, when the coronavirus crisis hit we closed our buildings, threw our efforts into providing resources online, and started planning an overhauled service model. The staff of the Library did an amazing job adjusting to these new demands, and I have never been as proud of them as I have been over the past few months. I’m writing this column at the end of April, as we start to solidify plans to bring library service back to the physical world safely. By the time you read this, I hope that the buildings have reopened, that we are working with our partners in the Central Library Consortium to get your requests to you, and that we are encouraging kids to keep reading during the summer. Wherever we are, you, our users, were never far from our thoughts. Our goal has always been to provide you with a safe environment while restoring as much of the familiar Delaware County District Library experience as we can. I hope that you will make the Library part of your new normal!

COVER STORY This issue of Check It Out is unlike any issue before. So much about our lives is different after the invasion of COVID-19 in the world and we’re still finding our way. On the following pages, you will not find any program or storytime listings. As we are putting together this issue, we’re simply not sure when programs can resume. But when they do, we will be sure to let you know via our website and social media. So what will you find in this issue of Check It Out? Your Summer Reading Club log, for starters! This summer’s theme is “Imagine Your Story.” We’re exploring fairytales and legends from around the globe and hope you imagine a great story for your summer! We’re so excited for you to read this summer, track your minutes, and win prizes. Along with the log for children ages 0 - 17, we’ve also included the Adult Summer Reading Club bookmark. Pick-up procedures will change throughout the summer for how you can get your prizes, so check our website, but we’ve got them ready for you! Want to keep reading after you’ve finished a log or bookmark? Print another one from the Summer Reading Club page on the Library website. Finally, we’ve included some information on our digital resources and some fun activities for a variety of ages. We have missed you at DCDL and are here for you! PRE-K SCAVENGER HUNT Reduce stress, get moving, and reconnect with the outdoors! Scavenger hunts like this one are beneficial because they encourage problem-solving, observational skills, and help children develop new vocabulary. With each item you check off, make sure to describe what you find or have your child describe what they see. For older children, check out a book to help you identify unknown leaves, birds, and flowers. This spring the Delaware County District Library launched a podcast channel. Search for “Off the Shelf with Delaware Library” on Podbean.com or subscribe wherever you listen to your podcasts. Listen to episodes of the “Off the Shelf” radio show with director George Needham and communications manager Nicole Fowles to keep up with what’s happening in the Library. Weekly guests give book reviews and talk about hot issues at DCDL. “What to Read Wednesdays,” hosted by Annie from the Delaware Main Library, will help you pick your next read with recommendations from Annie and other DCDL staff.
Finally, you won’t want to miss “Library Guys Go to the Movies,” hosted monthly by Luke and Dan. Listen up for all these, and more!

NATURE WALK CRAFT Go
The next time you’re outside enjoying a walk, pick up some beautiful things you find on the ground to create your very own Nature Walk Tree craft.
Gather
1. A piece of white cardstock or paper 2. Brown crayons, colored pencils or markers 3. Flowers, branches and leaves you’ve collected 4. Liquid glue
Create
1. Draw a tree trunk shape with branches 2. Squeeze glue all over the branch area 3. Press flowers, leaves and branches into the glue 4. Dress up the scene in any way you like - be creative! 5. Allow time to dry, then show off your creation

Preschool and up This is a delightful reimagining of Cinderella for a modern audience. Set in the future, Cinderella knows that science can be magic. Complete with a surprise ending, this is a fairytale Rosie Revere, Engineer or Ada Twist, Scientist would want to hear at night.
Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky by Kwame Mbalia
Ages 8+ For fantasy rooted in American and African folklore, this book is perfect! Tristan travels to his grandparent’s house in Alabama after a tragic accident. Following a tug-o-war with a strange creature, Tristan rips open a hole to a world full of gods and heroes such as John Henry and Anansi. This story is great for fans of Percy Jackson or Aru Shah.
