Celebrate Summer with Reading. OK, I admit it: summer is not my favorite time of year. I don’t like the beach, heat and humidity make me really uncomfortable, I have to wear a hat to prevent my bald head from getting sunburned, and there’s no hockey.
What makes this time of year bearable for me is Summer Reading Club, titled “Tails and Tales” this year. I love seeing kids in the Library finding new books to pique their curiosity and to keep up their reading skills over the school break. They burst with pride when they complete the six- and twelve-hour reading goals that get them great gifts, gifts that subtly encourage them to keep reading. I also try to keep up my reading during the summer so I can earn the rewards we have for the adult reading program! I can’t mention Summer Reading Club without thanking the Friends of the Delaware County District Library for their support for this endeavor. I say this frequently, but it’s so true: Friends, we couldn’t do it without you!

COVER STORY Our Check It Out cover models are David, Samantha, and Scout Dailey. Their mom, Bridget Dailey, has worked at DCDL for 5 years in the Youth Services department at the Delaware Main Library. You may recognize her from storytimes and programs like the Unicorn Party! David is looking forward to playing Minecraft, playing with friends, and visiting Grandma this summer and will be in 2nd grade next year. His sister, Samantha, can’t wait to visit the library, go to the beach and also see Grandma before she starts kindergarten in the fall. This year the Daileys welcomed Scout into their household. He’s a sweet beagle mix who loves treats, sniffing everything, and walks with his new family. This summer we’re taking on another summer reading challenge with the theme “Tails and Tales.” As always, you can track your minutes spent reading to earn prizes. This year, you’ll be able to pull up some of our virtual programs on-demand and view them to win additional prizes. In celebration of this adorable theme, we’ve featured a number of our staff’s pets in the following pages. See if you can spot all the good boys and girls!

Wonderbooks Playaway Audiobooks Typically, our Friends group raises funds from memberships, bargain book sales, author talks, young writers’ workshops and other events. But these are not typical times. Our fundraising has been limited by COVID restrictions, so membership dues are more important now than ever. Please join us in showing gratitude and providing support for our excellent library system. All members receive benefits including our quarterly newsletter, discounted prices at book sales and notices of upcoming events. Bonus: Friends members will be invited to special Liberty Library opening events! For more information on our group and membership benefits, or to conveniently join online using PayPal, visit: delawarelibraryfriends.org
We know you value the library and its resources, services and people. Why not join us in showing and sharing your enthusiasm through one of the following opportunities?
Service Opportunities Sorter: Sort incoming books and materials one week each month (or less often, depending upon the number of volunteers we have.) Sign up with a spouse or friend to share the job. Training is provided. Sorters are currently needed at the Main Library and Orange Branch. Sorting Coordinator: This position is responsible for maintaining the sorting schedule by checking with sorters for availability, creating the schedule, and contacting sorters as needed to fill in for unexpected absences. This person will provide training to new sorters and communicate changes in processes or schedules to the sorters. Sorting Coordinators are currently needed at the Main Library and Orange Branch. Board/Committee Member: We have an active Board and several committees (event planning, outreach, publicity, etc.) that would benefit from a variety of talents and experiences. Interested? STORYTIMES Early Literacy Tip: Summer Reading Club is here and we are celebrating Tails and Tales this summer. Here are some fun ways to build early literacy skills by reading, writing, singing, talking and playing throughout Summer Reading Club.
MegaByte says “Please read me a story!”
· Reading: Keep track of how much you read together on the Summer Reading Club log. Reading 15 minutes a day builds the skills your child will need to learn how to read. · Writing: Work together to make an animal alphabet book. Draw pictures of different animals that start with different letters. · Singing: Singing slows down language so kids can hear the smaller parts in words, which will help them when they learn how to read. Find storytimes and songs on-demand this summer. · Talking: Take a walk outside and talk about what you see and hear. Try to identify what type of animal is making each sound. It can be as simple as a walk around the neighborhood or an adventure at a local Preservation Park. · Playing: Use animal crackers or toy animals to create a zoo or a silly animal show! Dramatic play builds narrative skills, helps kids understand symbols and encourages them to use their imagination.

STAFF REVIEW by Rachael Clukey Adult Services Librarian
I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen
In this delightful, humorous picture book, the bear has lost his hat. He questions numerous animals in hopes to simply get his hat back. Although this is one of my favorite picture books of all time, it has a bit of a dark ending. I would recommend this story for older picture book readers, ages 4 or 5 and up.
Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo
“Flora and Ulysses” is one of my all-time favorite chapter books by Kate DiCamillo. This book is best for ages 6 and up, and particularly for those that are still pretty new to chapter books and that love animals. Parts of the book are actually written in comic book style. It is a story of true friendship between a 10-year-old girl, Flora, and her new pet squirrel, Ulysses. Flora discovers that Ulysses, somehow, has superpowers. Join Flora and Ulysses and put your imagination to work in this fun, fantasy-filled adventure!
The Cat Who Could Read Backwards by Lilian Jackson Braun
“The Cat Who Could Read Backwards” by Lilian Jackson Braun is a light murder mystery first published in 1966. It is the first in the late author’s 32-book series. In this book, Jim Qwilleran takes on a new art reporter position at a local newspaper. Although he knows nothing about art, he manages to learn along the way from the paper’s art critic, who has a cat named Koko. Koko helps solve the murders that happen throughout the book. While reading this book, you may question how smart the cat actually is and think that you may know who the murderer is at one point. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the cat and you may be, as well. Read this book while sipping your favorite cup of coffee or tea, alongside your favorite furry friend.
