CHECK IT OUT

Keeping you connected to the Delaware County District Library.

Learn in YOUR WAY at DCDL this winter Carols! Bells! Decorated trees! The smell of fresh-baked everything! Talking snowmen and reindeer! The winter holidays can be a wild, noisy, overwhelming tsunami of sensory overload. Now imagine you’re someone who is hypersensitive to noise or other sensory input, and consider what this time of year must be like. Perhaps you’re on the autism spectrum, or you’ve had a stroke or another ailment affecting your perception: the holidays can suddenly seem scary. This December, Orange Branch Library will host a Holiday Open House, including visits with Sensory Santa. The jolly old elf will be ratcheting down the “Ho Ho Ho,” the lights will be a bit dimmer, and Santa’s chair will be screened to reduce distractions and nervous anticipation. (Special thanks to the Delaware County Board of Developmental Disabilities who arranged this unique visit.) People experience the world in many ways, learning through different sensory inputs. Hosting Sensory Santa lets us reach out to a community that might be uneasy with the traditional holiday trappings. Similarly, the Maker Annex supports people who learn by doing. Videos and audiobooks help those who learn best by viewing or hearing. And of course, we still have books for those who learn by reading.

STAFF REVIEW by Anne Pasma Youth Services Specialist As a way to keep up to date, the staff meets every other month to talk about what they are reading in a committee called Readers’ Advisory. Readers’ Advisory is “librarian-speak” for a conversation that involves suggesting fiction and nonfiction titles to a reader through a conversation or question-and-answer process. I lead the DCDL Readers’ Advisory committee and here are some of the titles we’ve recently discussed in our meetings that have received a lot of excitement.

Saturday Night Ghost Club by Craig Davidson

Recommended by Katy Hite A story set in Niagara Falls in the 1980s, the protagonist is an overweight, awkward twelve-year-old boy who forms a club with two other misfit kids in town. What starts out as fun becomes much more serious as events unfold. Katy recommends this as a “Stranger Things” read-alike and cautions that it is sadder than expected.

Cheshire Crossing by Andy Weir & Sarah Andersen

Recommended by Jenny Ho This book continues the stories of Dorothy, Wendy and Alice as they navigate coming back to their real-world after their adventures in Oz, Neverland and Wonderland. Jenny loved the art and says this book will appeal to teens and adults alike.

My Friend Anna: The True Story of a Fake Heiress by Rachel DeLoache Williams

Recommended by Melissa Dougherty In Melissa’s words “this is a delicious hot mess!” The story is about a con artist who pretends to be an heiress and, under that pretense, persuades her friends to spend outrageous amounts of money. Perfect for fans of nonfiction and white-collar crime stories.

COVER STORY This issue of “Check It Out” features our Orange Branch Library Assistant Manager of Adult Services Katy Hite. Katy joined the staff in April 2019 and dove headfirst into all the fun things happening at the Delaware County District Library. Katy planned the Orange Branch Holiday Open House on December 6 at 6:00 p.m. Stop by to meet Katy and other Orange Branch Library staff, enjoy live music, and maybe even meet Santa! She has also been at the helm of the How-to Fest, lining up some great sessions to start the year off right and get you a jump start on your New Year’s resolutions. Outside of work, Katy loves to cook and try new recipes. It’s not uncommon to find a stack of new cookbooks in her kitchen. She’s also an avid runner. Katy completed the Playing Possum 50k race last May, which benefits the Special Olympics of Delaware County. For more information on these programs and more, read on or visit the newly redesigned www.delawarelibrary.org.
