CHECK IT OUT

Keeping you connected to the Delaware County District Library.

www.delawarelibrary.org

Welcome to the new CHECK IT OUT! This newsletter will keep you up to date on some of the ways that the Delaware County District Library provides resources to keep you educated, informed and entertained. I use the word “entertained” here advisedly. Recently, a library user wrote to me that she didn’t think the Library’s role (or, on a larger scale, the government’s) is to provide entertainment. This sparked a discussion of what constitutes entertainment. One person’s light novel is another person’s entrée into learning about a different country or time period. One person might watch a Library DVD to relieve the stress of the day, while another might view that same movie for a film studies class she’s taking at OWU. You might watch a toddler’s dance party event at the Library and see kids laughing, singing and dancing; we know that the kids are learning rhythm, rhymes, and colors, and parents are learning tricks for getting their kids interested in reading. Whatever brings you to the Library, either in person or to our website, we’re here to serve you, and to help you find the resources that you need and want. Of course, this is all made possible by our levy, and we thank you for voting to renew our levy on November 6!

COVER STORY Featured on our inaugural edition of the redesigned “Check It Out” newsletter is one of the newest additions to the Delaware County District Library family - Molly Meyers LaBadie. Molly joined DCDL in December 2017 as Deputy Director after 17 years of service in libraries. From a children’s librarian to a library trainer, and now our Deputy Director, she’s done it all! Molly has a passion for exploring strange and unique places, having visited destinations like the Christmas Story House in Cleveland or the Hartman Rock Garden in Springfield, Ohio. When she’s not on a road trip, she’s likely to be found knitting or relaxing with her family. You’ll see Molly throughout our branches this winter finding a book to read or program to attend for the Winter Reading Club. We’ve got plenty of options! During the month of December, we’re celebrating the holiday season with many opportunities for memory-making. Sing with us throughout the Village of Ostrander or witness two unique, family-friendly retellings of A Christmas Carol - one with tap dancing and song, the other with juggling! Ring in the New Year during an earlier hour at our annual “Noon Year’s Eve” Party. On Martin Luther King Day, the Library will remain open and feature activities to remember Dr. King’s legacy. Dr. King will even make an appearance at the Library to tell his story and answer questions. Finally, this winter we will partner again with the Delaware County schools as we read books written by Jason Reynolds. This biennial project with the schools is part of our DelawaREADS program, which encourages the community to unite while reading one book, one author or one style of literature. As in years past, the program will culminate with a visit from Jason Reynolds in February. Find details on all this and more in the pages to come or online at delawarelibrary.org. Happy New Year, and thank you for a wonderful 2018!

STAFF REVIEW by Miss Kelly Youth Services Manager When I heard that award-winning author Jason Reynolds was coming to Delaware County as a part of DelawaREADS, I let out the most embarrassing shrieky fangirl scream! Needless to say, I’m a fan. The first book I read by Reynolds was As Brave as You (which I am totally going to ask him to sign!) and I couldn’t stop there! Though, it was difficult to choose, here are just a few of my favorite other titles, along with some similar books you might know and what ages I would recommend read them.

As Brave As You, ages 10 and up

Read-alike: Gone Crazy in Alabama by Rita Williams-Garcia One of Reynolds’ “slower” stories, it follows two brothers from Brooklyn who are sent to spend the summer with their grandparents in rural Virginia. Through beautifully developed characters, the boys (and readers) explore fear, bravery, guilt, and forgiveness. Although I felt this book took forever to read, I was so sad when it ended!

The Track Series – Ghost, Patina, Sunny & Lu

ages 10 and up Read-alike: Rebound by Kwame Alexander Each book in this character-driven realistic fiction series focuses on a different person of the Defenders track team. Each member has different challenges on and off the track. Some are pretty intense, including gun violence, illness, and the death of a family member. I listened to most of these on audio which made Reynolds’ wonderful storytelling even better.

Long Way Down, ages 12 and up

Read-alikes: Monster by Walter Dean Myers or The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (another one of my favorite books) This novel, written in spare verse, shows Reynolds’ exceptional writing. Unlike his other books, I was caught off guard when the elevator doors opened revealing a ghost (!!!) from the main character’s past. In this quick, but super intense novel, a 15-year-old Will is confronted by several ghosts on his 60-second descent down his apartment building elevator. Each ghost is a victim of gun violence and plays an important role as Will decides if he will seek revenge for his older brother’s murder. Jason Reynolds will be at the Olentangy Berlin High School for a free visit on Friday, February 22, 2019 at 7:00pm. Visit delawarelibrary.org for details.
