Strathcona park lodge and outdoor education centre
Field trips should be fun, but they can be transformative at the same time. That’s the goal for every group that comes to Strathcona Park Lodge, one of Canada’s oldest outdoor education centres. From its 160-acre outdoor, lakeside classroom on Vancouver Island, a short distance to mountains, rivers and ocean, Strathcona specializes in turning individual students into confident, caring and resourceful leaders and team players, all while giving them an experience they’ll never forget. The kids, for their part, just had a good time.
“What a gift for these kids to end their elementary school years with a trip like this,” wrote Janice St. Helene, principal of intermediate grades at Vancouver Talmud Torah. “Thank you to all of your staff, who were gracious, professional and patient – as usual!” Indeed, the staff are the key to the whole Strathcona experience. Not only are they professional outdoor instructors, with the requisite hard skills, first aid training and criminal record checks, but they do this job as a vocation and passion. They love working with kids. One or two instructors partner with the one group of kids throughout their stay at Strathcona. The continuity, a rarity at most centres, allows
a relationship built on trust and friendship to grow. Students respond by exceeding their own expectations, bonding as a group and trying things they never thought they would, bolstering their confidence. The shy kid emerges on a camp out. The book worm stands out. The fearful one conquers the rock climbing bluff. Little victories are important. Strathcona’s deep-rooted, six-part philosophy encourages these epiphanies and is the fabric of every facet of a group’s stay. The Strathcona Circle is: Challenge by choice; Generosity of spirit; Happy warrior; More with less; Stewardship; and Living on the edge. Together they ensure that every activity is scalable to every ability, everyone’s contribution is equally valued and success is only achieved when everyone is involved. Ask any Strathcona instructor, whether they are canoe camping, learning whitewater skills, rock climbing, hiking in the mountains or enjoying the variety of activities on property each group goes through a transition. They begin as a group of kids and emerge stronger, happier and more confident.
“Your staff, facility and activities are first class,” wrote Derek Cherry, Principal of Thompson Elementary School in Richmond. “The students have memories to last them a life time…You definitely went above and beyond.”

Mt Seymour Resorts’ Outdoor Education and Snow School Vancouver’s North Shore enjoys some of the most beautiful and accessible mountains and forests in North America. For over 40 years, Mt Seymour has shared a uniquely West Coast Canadian experience with thousands of children across the Lower Mainland, providing them with positive experiences that have aided social and emotional learning and growth.
Culture Mt Seymour is blessed with easy access to wilderness and is dedicated to working with schools to foster a culture of outdoor recreation and knowledge as a cornerstone of healthy active living. Skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing are all life-sports; skills that once learned can be enjoyed at any stage in life. Skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing are ideal family and group activities, encouraging friendships, self-awareness and decision making. Mt Seymour’s professional guides and instructors create a supportive, non-competitive learning environment, focussed on celebrating personal growth in a group setting. Visiting Mt Seymour challenges students to enter an unfamiliar mountainous environment and confront their psychological and physical norms.
Environment Our wilderness is both neighbour and playground. Giving children an understanding of how the past and the future depends on nature is fundamentally tied to their experience of our natural world. Contact with nature is essential to children’s health and quality of life. Children increasingly have fewer opportunities to spend time in nature and enjoy outdoor activities, leading to Nature Deficit Disorder. Recent studies have shown the benefits of outdoor activities that include reduced stress, better physical and mental fitness and improved social skills. Alpine sports create value for children by forming a respect and positive relationship with nature. Mt Seymour’s culture of outdoor recreation includes promoting stewardship though understanding.

Education Mt Seymour’s programs focus on experiential leaning and fun, yet can often be daunting for those new to our winter wonderland. Our goal is to safely build success through safe and positive experiences, directed through supportive leadership. Ultimately, the challenges students overcome lead to rewarding and empowering life experiences. Visiting Mt Seymour satisfies students’ daily physical activity requirements in a recognized alternate environment. Students benefit from spending time in nature and participating in activities that are uniquely

accessible living in Metro Vancouver. Mt Seymour believes all children should enjoy these benefits so we offer below market prices for schools. Mt Seymour’s team of experienced professionals ensures a safe, positive and confidence-building introduction to alpine sports. We pride ourselves on our fun, progressive learning environment. We’re dedicated to making it a day to remember while incorporating strong curriculum links and developing the skills to enjoy the outdoors for a lifetime.

Parade of Animals heralded back into the Livestock Barn (#13 on Map)
It was morning. Caramel the goat was sleeping in her stall when Jacques Pierre – the farm’s little rooster – announced that it was time to get up. She shook her head a little, looked at her friend Priscilla sleeping beside her in the hay, and wondered “would the children come today?’ Since 1975 North Vancouver’s Maplewood Farm has been a place where animals and children can meet and get to know each other. For the animals, it’s a special home where they can live in comfort and safety, cared for by the farm’s workers. For the children, it’s a chance to spend time at a working farm in the heart of the city. Maplewood Farm was created by Dirk Oostinde, former District of North Vancouver Parks Superindendent. His plan was to expose urban children to rural life and give them some education about basic country life and provide them with an experience they might not normally get. Farm residents include goats, cows, sheep, donkeys, horses, ducks, chickens, rabbits and pot-bellied pigs. NEW FOR TEACHERS! One of the realities of growing up in the city is that kids don’t often get a chance to interact with animals – other than domestic house pets. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to take your students “Behind the Scenes”? Farm life is closer than you think at Maplewood Farm. Take advantage of this opportunity to collect eggs from the poultry barn’s nesting boxes, prepare grain and bedding for our fabulous flock of sheep, give Sally and Minnie our Shetland ponies the royal treatment by picking their feet clean and grooming their fur! Booking is a breeze: just call the office at 604-929-5610 to arrange a date and time catered to your needs. This program is priced very affordably at $15.00/child (including tax). Please note this program is one hour in duration and is intended for children 3 years of age and up. In order to reserve a spot for your class, a booking requirement of 15 children minimum and a maximum will be in effect.
The cost of the program includes the “Behind the Scenes” session as well as general admission to the farm. Maplewood is also a popular destination for children’s birthday parties, and visitors are welcome to make use of the undercover gazebo for parties or events at no charge. From April until the end of October you can arrange a pony ride service for your party where, for $89.00 (including tax), up to 12 children, accompanied by a farm attendant, get to ride on Krokur, Maplewood’s Icelandic horse. The spring brings babies as lambs, chicks, bunnies and baby goats join the farm’s family. When a larger animal like a donkey or calf is born, Maplewood has a naming contest. The winner gets to name the baby and also receives a one-year membership to Maplewood Farm. If you’re looking for somewhere to take your family where you can slow down, relax and enjoy the wonders of nature and farm life, make sure Maplewood Farm is on your list of places to visit.
Maplewood Farm is located just off Dollarton Hwy, east of 2nd Narrows Bridge, 405 Seymour River Place, North Vancouver, 604-929-5610. Open Tues – Sun, 10 am – 4 pm.
Historical Chinatown Tours The vibrant and rich history of Vancouver’s Chinatown comes alive as the stories unravel before you on this engaging and informative tour.
Tours include... Judy’s Chinatown tours will encompass learning about the history of Chinese in Canada: • Their contributions to the foundations of Canada – the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway and enlistment in the Second World War, which led to the franchise; • How this history fits into the context of the Chinese diaspora significant individuals – like local merchants Yip Sang and Chang Toy, and the Father of Modern China, Dr. Sun Yat-sen; • Information about Chinatown’s heritage buildings – Sam Kee’s world’s narrowest building; • The Chinese Freemasons, as well as clan and county associations details about important events, the evolution of the community, and how Chinatown has survived and developed into a cultural centre for Vancouver tourism and education.
Testimonials... Having grown up in the Strathcona area and having walked from my elementary school, Strathcona, through Chinatown to Chinese School for four years, I thought that I knew Chinatown well. However, when Judy Maxwell took fifteen of my fellow members of the Canadian Federation of University Women from throughout B.C. on a tour, I learned so much more. Vancouver’s Chinatown is full of history. We learned how the Government of Canada was forced to recognize its Chinese-Canadians as Canadian citizens and the impact of the sacrifices made by ChineseCanadian soldiers during the two world wars. We walked on the main street, Pender, but also went to Shanghai Alley, Keefer Street and even the alleys which lead to once bustling courtyards of old buildings – formerly lively homes to many multi-generational families. We even entered a historic building which is currently a recreation area for players of mah jong, fan tan and pai gow. How fascinating, too, it was to see Pender Street from a balcony which towered over the walkers below and provided an incredible view of the adjacent structures – all the better for us to view the intricate designs and unique architecture. Judy made the visit to Chinatown alive as she talked about its structures, the people, their businesses, triumphs, pains and joys. A walk with Judy also fills a person with curiosity, as one continues to wonder about a bygone era full of vivid reminders through the sights, sounds and aromas of Chinatown. – Bev Wong, CFUW

FORT STEELE HERITAGE TOWN Fort Steele, B.C. The past lives and breathes at Fort Steele Heritage Town! Since its gold rush beginning in 1864, Fort Steele has gone from boomtown to ghost town to one of the most prestigious heritage attractions in British Columbia. For over 40 years, Fort Steele has offered a wide variety of education programming that uses participatory teaching methods involving hands-on activities. Students love the educators’ first-person interpretation style to give them the feeling that they have literally stepped back to the year 1898. Join one of the ladies in the schoolhouse or our pioneer home, where they will teach students how to wash clothes, churn butter, and make ice cream. Or visit our railway workers, where they will teach children about Canada’s railway history while helping them build a real set of railway tracks, and then take a ride on the old hand pump car. With over a dozen different programs, there is sure to be one that suits your class perfectly. And why simply stay for the day when you can have your class spend a night in historic 1887 RCMP barracks? The barracks sleep up to 70 people and come equipped with straw mattresses, wood stove cooking facilities, cooking utensils and eating area.

We are happy to offer special lessons, tour programs and pricing to community centres and school groups. The calm waters of Deep Cove provide a comfortable, safe environment for young, first time paddlers. We adapt our tours based on the needs or requests of the groups. We can focus our tours on fitness and fun for PE Classes, marine ecology for science and biology classes, landscape and geography and more. At Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak Centre, safety is of utmost importance. We abide by all Transport Canada regulations and all of our guides are certified sea kayak guides or instructors with current first aid and CPR certification. We offer a guide to student ratio of 1:6 in single kayaks or 1:8 in double kayaks. This ensures that we can quickly address any
safety concerns and ensure that all of our students have a great time on the water. Our facilities include changerooms, bathrooms and showers. We have nearby picnic shelters and a grass field that can accommodate large groups. You can easily make a day trip out of your stay in Deep Cove by combining a kayak tour with the short and scenic hike up to Quarry Rock. Programs include 1.5 hour Dragon Boat sessions or 2 hours+ kayak excursions. These programs are not offered on weekends or public holidays. A guided program is required unless qualified on-water supervision is provided. Deep Cove is an excellent venue for your school or community group.

DISCOVER PORT METRO VANCOUVER Port Metro Vancouver offers free, interactive presentations to groups from a Grade 3 level through to post-secondary and business groups. Our dynamic presentations are on the history, business, environment or future of the port. We can also work to tailor a presentation to best suit the needs of your group.
Business
For school groups, we concentrate on four main educational outcomes/ types of presentations:
Experience the War of 1812
Community (General Overview) Our early education programming focuses on the community of the port, BC and Canada. We talk about the natural resources we export to countries around the world, the province they come from, and the use of the resources. We take students on a journey across Canada by truck and rail that ends at Port Metro Vancouver. Environment This presentation focuses on the three areas of air, land and water. We discuss our environmental initiatives in detail and provide an overview of our trading economies and five business sectors. History These presentations are geared towards geography and history classes interested in learning about how the port and our bordering communities have changed since 1792, when Captain George Vancouver first sailed into Burrard Inlet and determined Vancouver to be an ideal trading region.
For classes interested in learning about the port’s general trade, this presentation educates students on the cargo we export (natural resources) and import (automobiles, clothing, electronics etc.), the countries we trade with, our environment initiatives and community investment. Who won the War of 1812? How long did it take a soldier to load a musket? Discover the answers to these questions, and more when you visit The War of 1812 Experience at Canada Place with your class! Visit the War of 1812 Experience at Canada Place and your students will discover… • A cinematic re-created battle on film, immersing students in the Siege of Fort Erie, 1814. • Artifacts from the War of 1812. • Interactive digital content including a map displaying many of the battles, puzzles and trivia, and the war from four different perspectives. • Heroes of War: Tecumseh, Sir Isaac Brock, Laura Secord, Charles-Michel De Salaberry – and many more! • Pre-visit and post-visit activities to support your students’ learning before and after your field trip. This 90-minute school program is available until March 2014. Book a presentation for your class today at: 604.665.9179 or community.relations@portmetrovancouver.com.

A CULTURAL JOURNEY TO THE SQUAMISH LÍL’ WAT CULTURAL CENTRE WHISTLER, BRITISH COLUMBIA
CUSTOMIZING FIELD TRIPS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS My name is David Baker. I am a tour guide at the Squamish Líl’wat Cultural Centre, and have had the opportunity to lead many students through the facility. When school groups visit, our centre comes alive. We always have the students participate in traditional dancing and singing as an icebreaker activity; we want the students to feel comfortable and welcome so that they can ask us questions they may have about our culture. My favourite tour was for a school group learning about traditional art. We work closely with the teachers to understand projects students are working on and we focus our tours based on those learning goals. We created a pre- and post-visit program for the class. Prior to their tour they researched First Nation’s traditional art designs, during their visit we also taught them to them to sing and drum. Our tour focused on the art throughout the museum and they learned how drums were traditionally made by making their own mini-drum. Back in the classroom, they were able to bring their drums to art class to paint traditional First Nation symbols. That day I left work knowing the students had a better understanding of the local First Nations culture and appreciation for Squamish and Líl’wat Nations.

“It tickles!” exclaimed the young boy. He sounded both astonished and proud as he crouched protectively over the small hermit crab walking its shell timidly across his gently cupped hand. Just an hour before, this young student resisted exploring the sandy beach and tide pools with unfamiliar species. By watching the SPES educators’ exuberant explorations over the course of a Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES) Beach Explorers program, this boy stepped literally and figuratively out of his own shell and onto a transformative path of nature connection. Based in Vancouver’s Stanley Park, SPES offers a wide range of experiential environmental education field trips for elementary school students. Students discover towering trees, slithering slugs, incredible invertebrates and beautiful birds in hands-on science-based and curriculum-connected activities both in Stanley Park and local classrooms. Don’t want the day to end? Stay overnight! Join us for the acclaimed two-day ecology program Urban Camping Nature Immersion. Experience the diverse habitats in Stanley Park by day and camp under the stars at night.

UBC Biodiversity Collections Field Trips The University of British Columbia is home to myriad field trip options, including the Beaty Biodiversity Museum and UBC Botanical Garden. The UBC Botanical Garden offers the opportunity for students and teachers to go on a global expedition without leaving UBC. The Beaty Museum is Vancouver’s natural history museum, dedicated to creating a shared sense of wonder about the world around us. Canada’s oldest continuously operating botanical garden features native British Columbia plants and exotic species from around the world. Highlights include an alpine garden, a food garden, a Physic garden, and a wide range of trees and forest plants from Eastern North America and Asia. The Garden offers a range of seasonally themed tours, catered to many grade levels. You can choose to explore on your own, viewing the plant collections at a pace that works for your group. The Botanical Garden also manages the nearby Nitobe Memorial Garden, a traditional tea and stroll garden, and another excellent field trip venue. Located in the Botanical Garden is the Greenheart Canopy Walkway, a 308-metre (1010 feet) aerial trail system. The only one of it’s kind in Canada; it offers a rare perspective of the natural beauty of the west coast forest canopy ecosystem. Your students will agree - it’s really fun! Canopy walkways allow access to the upper parts of the forest (the canopy) where visitors are introduced to a world of flora and fauna thriving in the lofty environment. Book a one-hour fully guided aerial adventure to learn about BC forests, the environment, first nations, and more. Kids of all ages leave with smiles and interesting new knowledge.
UBC’s impressive and extensive collection of over two million natural history specimens. Give your students an unforgettable hands-on experience with real museum specimens, increasing their awareness of biodiversity, ecology, and conservation. Your students will build memories that will last a lifetime. Guided programs and tours introduce material complementary to the BC curriculum, including plants, evolution, adaptations, journaling, fine arts, habitats and ecosystems. Spend a full day at the museum by combining a program with our daily activities, including documentaries, hands-on activities, and the opportunity to use the museum as an alternative class space. Make the most of a full day at UBC by combining a seasonally themed Botanical Garden tour, a Canopy Walkway tour, and a visit to the Beaty Museum. Both the museum and garden are perfect backdrops for studying math, science, arts, conservation, and history with a nature-focused, west coast spin. Want to know more? Teachers with BCCT or BC school ID can visit all three venues for free! Whether you teach pre-school, high school, or post-secondary, our collections, activities, and lessons can support your classroom. Visit early to become familiar with the venues and to plan lessons and activities that complement your current classroom projects. IMAX Inspires! IMAX films provide students with unique and exciting opportunities to explore new worlds and new ideas. Educators’ resources are always available online, and we are happy to make them available upon any group booking. Whether your students are artists, filmmakers, scientists or something else entirely, IMAX can inspire them to get creative in their education. You Program The Theatre! Interactive and engaging programs are offered at three sites: the Community Museum, McLean Mill National Historic Site and the Maritime Discovery Centre. Opportunities to discover Port Alberni and provincial history, from First Nations culture and pioneer experiences to forestry and maritime heritage, our programs address many of the prescribed learning outcomes of the Social Studies curriculum. The McLean National Historic Site is a restored 1920s steam sawmill and lumber camp. Step back in time and discover the early days of BC’s logging and forestry industry and experience what mill camp life would have been like. At the Maritime Discovery Centre visit a lighthouse and gallery. Located on the waterfront in the centre of our active deep sea port, exhibits focus on the history of lighthouses, navigation and exploration of the west coast, the 1964 Tsunami and the contemporary work of Neptune Canada.

Nestled in the district of Errington on Vancouver Island, NIWREC is a park-like setting with a peaceful, rustic atmosphere. When visiting the centre, you will be able to view eagles, several species of owls, falcons, hawks, ravens, turkey vultures and black bears. Your class will be greeted at the Museum of Nature, a living display of flora and static mounts of fauna. You will head over to the eagle flight cage were eagles can be viewed through one way glass. Monitors have been set up for children to view rehabilitating black bears. The public viewing area of non-releasable birds is beautifully arranged for your delight. As well, children will be able to walk around a release pond where turtles, ducks, geese and fish reside. New this year is a Trapper’s Cabin, where the history of trapping will be explored. During your tour, the children will be visited by a glove-trained bird (an owl or falcon) and receive an educational talk about the bird. A sponsorship certificate will also be given to your class for supporting the centre with your visit. NIWRC’s docents are highly enthusiastic and well trained in delivering the programs offered. There are many visual biofacts and sensory displays available for all ages and capabilities of children. This truly is a “Wildlife Experience for the Whole Class.”
