Strathcona Park Lodge & Outdoor Education Centre Why Outdoor Education? Active, adventure packed programs foster positive learning experiences that teach children and groups outdoor and life skills. Outdoor education can play an important role in a student’s career. Shy students shine, new stars emerge, accomplishments bolster confidence, bonds form through shared experiences and challenges are overcome. Students learn leadership, teamwork and initiative – stereotypes, preconceptions, attitudes and barriers are easily dropped. There’s no doubt an outdoor education experience is valuable. But there are many outdoor centres to choose from. Here’s why we think you should choose Strathcona.

Location The location is special. Strathcona may take a little longer to reach, but it’s worth the drive. Just ask the schools from Kamloops and Saskatchewan that have made the trip in the past. The advantage is in the facilities onsite and nearby. There are natural climbing bluffs, a high-ropes course, hikes, several zip lines, a large lake and enough accommodation to house 200 students on our 160 acre property. There are also nearby mountains, trails, lakes, rivers and an ocean for specialty programs.

maintenance and upgrading of equipment, and it’s no surprise we’ve earned ourselves an enviable safety record. Managers and supervisors are considered leaders in the field of wilderness risk management.

Accommodation Our rooms are nicer. At Strathcona, students, teachers and chaperones stay in rustic, but comfortable hotel-style rooms. On out-trips they stay in tents or under tarps. Boys and girls stay in separate rooms, assigned by teachers. Most rooms have a bathroom.

Philosophy We’re philosophically deeper. A key feature of a Strathcona experience is The Strathcona Circle: six principles built into every facet of your stay. Challenge by Choice; Generosity of Spirit; Happy Warrior; More with Less; Stewardship; and Living on the Edge. These key philosophies will be explained and taught on all programs and are part of what makes a visit to Strathcona so valuable.

Food Instructors Our instructors are more experienced, excellent role models and are chosen because they are smart, energetic, caring leaders who like working with youth. All instructors require a criminal record check and hold current certification in Wilderness First Aid & CPR. Most work year round as outdoor instructors and guides, and have the soft skills to help kids extrapolate learning to their every day lives. More options, better instruction – Unlike many other programs, our instructors stay with one group of students for their entire stay. This relationship provides continuity and builds trust and communications that fosters a more in-depth learning experience. In addition, the diversity of our programs allows progression. The same students could return year after year, doing something different every time, always building on their past experiences.

We serve better food. Meals are family-style and are approachable for a variety of tastes and backgrounds. An extension of Strathcona’s fundamental philosophies, the food is as local as possible, often organic, allergy and dietary sensitive and always wholesome, nutritious and balanced. We encourage students to try new things and there are always lots of veggies and salad.

History We’ve been doing it longer; Since 1959, in fact. That’s when Myrna and Jim Boulding founded Strathcona Park Lodge, likely Canada’s first outdoor education centre. From its birth, the Lodge’s main focus has been exposing youths to the outdoors in a positive way. The Lodge is still run by the Boulding family and its goal remains the same.

Cost Safe Strathcona boasts an enviable safety record. Combine the knowledge, skill and experience of our instructors with ongoing staff training, continuous evaluation of procedures and

The per student cost to enjoy all these advantages is equivalent to most of the other options available. Contact the Program Manager to find out more about costs and rates at 250-286-3122 or info@strathcona.bc.ca b.c. school destinations directory

Two of our boys it turns out have never been overnight camping before. We spent almost the whole day debriefing – created a timeline, a word for every hour of our trip, artistic renderings of our favorite moments and acting out those epic activities. Thanks so much for giving us such a wonderful learning outdoor experience. I never thought I would hear the class raving so much and they also loved the food!”

David had a passion for the train and for the children. He designed the special events to delight the children, and he loved doing it until his death in 2012. The 18-hole golf course was added in 2009. It is a landscaped course that meanders amongst the redwoods. It provides lots of fun for your family or school group! FLYOVER CANADA FlyOver Canada is an exciting new attraction located at Canada Place in the heart of downtown Vancouver. It incorporates state-of-the-art technology to bring you some of Canada’s most thrilling sights, like you have never seen them before. You will hang suspended, feet dangling, immersed in a huge 20 metre spherical screen while you are taken on a thrilling journey from east to west across Canada. FlyOver Canada’s film production team spent over a year travelling from coast to coast capturing some of Canada’s most spectacular locations. Special effects like wind, mist and scents combine with the ride movement to create an incredible experience. Dip into deep valleys where wild rivers rush by. Feel the wind in your hair as you fly over magnificent prairies. Gaze at snow-capped mountains that tower over the land. Seek the thrill of urban environments that buzz from morning to night. By the end, you will find yourself in awe of this amazingly diverse country. While the flight ride only takes about 10 minutes, groups should allow approximately 45 minutes for the entire FlyOver Canada experience, including the audio-visual pre-show Uplift. FlyOver Canada’s location and the relatively short time commitment required make it a perfect activity for a downtown class outing. It can be easily combined with a trip to Port Metro Vancouver, the Art Gallery (a short walk away), or Science World (via Skytrain).

Mt. Seymour Snow School & Outdoor Education Vancouver’s North Shore enjoys some of the most beautiful and accessible mountains and forests in North America. For over 40 years, Mt. Seymour has shared a uniquely West Coast Canadian experience with thousands of children across the Lower Mainland, providing them with positive experiences that have aided social and emotional learning and growth.

Culture Mt. Seymour is blessed with easy access to wilderness and is dedicated to working with schools to foster a culture of outdoor recreation and knowledge as a cornerstone of healthy active living. Skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing are all life-sports; skills that once learned can be enjoyed at any stage in life. Skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing are ideal group activities, encouraging friendships, self-awareness and decision making. Mt. Seymour’s professional guides and instructors create a supportive, non-competitive learning environment, focussed on celebrating personal growth in a group setting. Visiting Mt. Seymour challenges students to enter an unfamiliar mountainous environment and confront their psychological and physical norms.

Environment Our wilderness is both neighbour and playground. Giving children an understanding of how the past and the future depends on nature is fundamentally tied to their experience of our natural world. Contact with nature is essential to children’s health and quality of life. Children increasingly have fewer opportunities to spend time in nature and enjoy outdoor activities, leading to Nature Deficit Disorder. Recent studies have shown the benefits of outdoor activities that include reduced stress, better physical and mental fitness and improved social skills. Alpine sports create value for children by forming a respect and positive relationship with nature. Mt. Seymour’s culture of outdoor recreation includes promoting stewardship though understanding.

“Cognitive benefits from play in nature, including creativity, problem-solving, focus and self-discipline. Social benefits include cooperation, flexibility, and self-awareness. Emotional benefits include stress reduction, reduced aggression and increased happiness.” (Burdette, Hillary L.; and Robert C. Whitaker, “Resurrecting Free Play in Young Children: Looking Beyond Fitness and Fatness to Attention, Affiliation and Affect.” © 2005 American Medical Association.) Education Mt. Seymour’s programs focus on experiential leaning and fun, yet can often be daunting for those new to our winter wonderland. Our goal is to safely build success through safe and positive experiences, directed through supportive leadership. Ultimately, the challenges students overcome lead to rewarding and empowering life experiences. Visiting Mt. Seymour satisfies students’ Daily Physical Activity requirements in a recognized Alternate Environment. Students benefit from spending time in nature and participating in activities that are uniquely accessible living in Metro Vancouver. Mt. Seymour believes all children should enjoy these benefits so we offer below market prices for schools. Mt. Seymour’s team of experienced professionals ensures a safe, positive and confidence building introduction to alpine sports. We pride ourselves on our fun, progressive learning environment. We’re dedicated to making it a day to remember, while incorporating strong curriculum links and developing the skills to enjoy the outdoors for a lifetime.

Horne Lake Caves & Outdoor Centre Horne Lake Caves & Outdoor Centre is an award-winning outdoor education facility located on Central Vancouver Island that combines cross-curricular education with a spectacular setting: more than 250 hectares of lakefront, river and caves featuring crystal-clear water and some of the most unique outdoor programs on Vancouver Island. An excellent example is the Cave Geology program offered in fall and spring, where students experience the mysteries of the underground world and get the best hands-on education in Earth Sciences. This popular program is available as a day-trip or as part of an overnight camp. Also available are three-day Explorer Camps with activities including rock rappelling, canoeing, teambuilding games and wilderness survival skills. This program is very affordable considering the four core activities, including two nights camping, costs only $89 per student (teachers are free). Optional full-meal programs, sleeping in a group tent and evening campfires make it fun and convenient to add experiential education to your school year. Horne Lake Outdoor Centre is also offering pre- and post-visit activities that support your teaching in class. Our talented instructors share their love of the outdoors and will make this one of the most rewarding field trips of the year. Prime dates in May and June are still available but fill up fast. Check out the website at www.hornelake.com for more info and online registration or call our group coordinator at 1-250-703-6051. b.c. school destinations directory

U’mista Cultural Centre U’mista’s Potlatch Collection tells an epic story of resistance and resilience. The Centre opened in 1980 to house repatriated Kwakwaka’wakw ceremonial regalia that had been seized by government authorities in 1922. One of the most complete and important collections of its type in the world, U’mista’s Potlatch Collection is a source of great joy and pride for the Kwakwaka’wakw community. U’mista welcomes all class visits. Educational tours at U’mista are FREE to all regional teachers, and there is no admission charge for Kwakwaka’wakw students. We are happy to host a fun day or develop a custom learning session that supports your curriculum.

A UNIQUE AND MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE FOR ALL AGES!

DR. SUN YAT-SEN CLASSICAL CHINESE GARDEN

A classical Chinese garden is as unique as a thumbprint and its own work of art. The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, the first of its kind outside of China, is an inspiring example of two cultures coming together to create a window into a traditional world containing lessons relevant to today. A magical place filled with stories of ancient people and mythical animals, the Garden is a piece of nature perfect for multi-sensory learning. Our school programs make for fun and engaging field trips for students of all ages and are also designed to meet the learning

outcomes of the BC provincial curriculum. Program topics include life in Ming dynasty China (1368-1644), immigration to BC, science and technology, festivals and holidays, philosophy and symbolic creatures. Try Dragon Boat Paddling with your students, add on our historic Chinatown Walking Tour, or a Tai Chi lesson to any program. This Ming Dynasty style classical Chinese garden is a living museum, a community gathering place, an art gallery and a classroom.

SkyTrek Adventure Park SkyTrek Adventure Park is an aerial adventure park filled with fun and exciting games within the trees. Students and their teachers can challenge themselves on the aerial trekking course or get a rush of adrenaline at the Adventure Tower. Students who choose to do the aerial trekking course will be working their way through a series of obstacles within the trees. The course has four different levels that get progressively higher and more challenging. We provide everyone with a harness, helmet, and all the necessary gear. Our experienced and enthusiastic staff will demonstrate and explain how to safely and properly move through the course on our training course. This course is close to the ground and exposes everyone to some of the obstacles they’re going to see on the course, but at a comfortable height. Once they’ve demonstrated they feel confident on the training course, it’s onto the green course. Then onto blue, black, then double black. On

the course, you’ll walk along suspension bridges and tight ropes, ride ziplines, and even snowboard between tree tops! The Adventure Tower is filled with adrenaline-pumping fun. There’s a 13-metre high simulated free fall, a giant swing, a swinging log with climbing holds, and two different climbing walls. One is animal and nature-themed, while the other is our new Indiana Jones-themed wall. The new wall features three different climbing routes that have blocks, vines, and snakes to use to climb up. It’s sure to get your heart pumping and your muscles working. The activities at SkyTrek Adventure Park encourage teamwork and inspire self-confidence. Students help motivate and encourage each other, as well as celebrate each other’s success. A lot of people are taken out of their comfort zone and exposed to something brand new. We try and make their experience as fun and as memorable as possible!

Located beside the Enchanted Forest between Revelstoke and Sicamous, SkyTrek Adventure Park is open from mid-May to Thanksgiving weekend. For more information, contact: Veronika Stevenson, Operations Manager May to October:

Academie Duello Academie Duello is the world’s largest centre for the research and practice of Historical European Swordplay and Martial Arts. The school features classes and programs on swordplay and history for youth of all ages. Kids discover the exciting world of knights and chivalry, feudalism and warfare, courtly grace and heraldry, through hands-on classes and interactive exhibits in our arms and armour discovery centre.

Our location is in Vancouver’s historic Gas Town district and is easy to get to by transit. We are close to Waterfront Station and there is ample parking in the area. Programs can be designed for your particular learning objectives and can range from short one-hour visits through our museum to two and four hour visits that include classes in swordplay, archery, and more as well as including an interactive view of many historical topics.

European swordplay and martial arts are a great vehicle for learning about history, mathematics, science, and drama. We have school groups as big as 90 students join us each year and are proud to be a place that people come back to again and again.

We also have a farm and equestrian centre in Richmond that can host larger school groups, and gives students the opportunity to interact with horses and learn about the heart of knighthood and mounted warfare.

Garden provides endless opportunities to engage students in learning about science, art and the natural world. Our guided tours support the B.C.’s Ministry of Education science and related curriculum. With over 10 unique garden areas to experience, the educational opportunities are endless! Highlights include a demonstration food garden, B.C. rainforest garden, alpine garden and more. Located in the Botanical Garden is the Greenheart Canopy Walkway, a 308 metre aerial trail system; the only one of it’s kind in Canada. It offers a rare perspective of the natural beauty of the west coast forest canopy ecosystem. Your students will agree - it’s really fun! The Botanical Garden also manages the nearby Nitobe Memorial Garden, a traditional Japanese tea and stroll garden, which is another excellent field trip venue. You can choose to explore on your own, viewing the plant collections at a pace that works for your group or book a one-hour fully guided adventure to learn about B.C. forests, the environment, First Nations and more. Kids of all ages leave with smiles and interesting new knowledge. Look for exciting new programs for Fall 2014! Kid- AND Adult-friendly fun all year round! Looking for a school field trip that both the kids and teachers/parents will enjoy? Then get ready to strap yourself into an adrenaline ride that is a ton of fun and has an emphasis on safety! Indoor Kart Racing at TBC has been offering year-round go-kart racing since 2000 and offers a variety of options for group bookings. Whether it is a birthday party or a large group hosting an event, the options are limitless. TBC offers a wide range of facilities that makes bringing down a large group easy. This includes expandable meeting/banquet rooms, pre-/ post-race entertainment, and plenty of catering options to suit everyone’s needs. At TBC there is a very strong focus on safety! Not only will everyone have a great time, each racer will also go through on-site in-depth training. It is important that everyone has a positive experience and the most fun possible – so TBC teaches you how to race properly. This is a great way to introduce younger kids into racing safety. All drivers attend a pre-race Drivers' meeting given by TBC’s staff. They will watch a safety video, gear up in TBC’s racing suits and full face helmets before entering the track. Once inside, the staff will help each racer adjust their seat, answer any questions and then be re-briefed again on the rules of the track. The briefing covers the operations of the karts, track regulations, flag systems, safety procedures

and a few driving tips. This gets everyone pumped up and ready to go! Plus, you never have to worry about getting stuck or stopping! There are stop lights and a flag system in place to ensure even if you do stop, the whole track will slow down while a staff member gets you moving again. Safety first! As part of your group's race experience at TBC, they can offer an awards and presentation ceremony, where the winners stand on the winner’s podium for pictures. TBC can supply trophies, team t-shirts and other racing items to make this an event one everyone will remember for a long time. Indoor Kart Racing at TBC has long-standing involvement at a number of schools in the lower mainland area. Including participating in the school dance ticket program to help give kids a chance to come out and race at a great price. TBC has vast experience arranging school field trips and offers schools flexible pricing to ensure their field trip fits within the budget. Age/Height Requirements: all racers MUST be at least 11 years old and a minimum height of 58 inches. For more information on exclusive racing packages available, www.tbcir.ca or contact TBC’s sales team at (604) 232-9196 ext #3 or sales@tbcir.ca.

The resort’s full-kitchen suites accommodate 4 to 8 guests and the campground is ready for your family’s RV or tenting experience. After your day’s activities come and relax. Soak in the 2000 square feet of hot pools or refresh in the cold plunge pool. Reminisce around the campfire. The resort is adjacent to the spectacular Crazy Creek Waterfalls and Suspension Bridge. The recently added highway overpass links the resort with the Crazy Creek Waterfalls. The boardwalks, trails

and tame mountain wilderness lead to the High Mountain Patio and a 73 metre suspension bridge above raging Crazy Creek. Enjoy a coffee or ice cream while relaxing on the High Mountain Patio with the sound of the waterfalls in the background. There are picnic tables nestled among the towering fir trees and you can browse the souvenir and gift shop. Groups are welcome to camp at Crazy Creek in our treed tent sites, have their lunches on the resort’s grassy knoll, enjoy a campfire, marshmallows and reminisce around our group fire pit after their soak in the hot pools or hike to the waterfalls.

Manning Park Resort - something for everyone! Nestled in the heart of the Cascade Mountains, Manning Park offers a breathtaking locaon to allow your students to make connecons with nature, each other and themselves - and all an easy bus ride away! Under a 2.5 hour drive from most places in the lower mainland, Manning Park Resort is sll able to give you and your students the feeling of being remote with its unique locaon in the middle of a Class A Provincial Park.

The byword in Manning Park is variety! There is truly something here for every season, for every skill and acvity level, for every class of every size, or somemes even a whole school! While Coastal Mountains are oen le waing for snow, Manning is just high enough in elevaon and close enough to the interior to turn coastal rain into fresh powder to supply a multude of winter acvies. Choose from downhill skiing or snowboarding, cross country skiing (both classic and skate skiing), tubing, snowshoeing, tobogganing, and ice skang, or stay a few days and fit it all in! For skiing, boarding and cross country skiing we offer lessons from cerfied instructors and we can also ouit your class in rental equipment complete with helmets. You can also add in a fun, educaonal component to your trip with a guided snowshoe program. We’ll get your students moving with a snowshoe adventure while learning about winter survival or another topic of your choice. Aer a busy day on the slopes or trails, book ahead and we’ll open the ice skate rentals for you so you can challenge your students to a game of shinny on our outdoor, night lit skang rink.

Spring or Fall you can connect the curriculum to the real world with educaon programs tailored to your needs and designed by a cerfied teacher. Make science, art or even math come alive for your students with the incredible array of plants and animals who call Manning Park their home. In the early fall or late spring you could also challenge your students to one of Manning’s many hikes, or rent canoes or kayaks on sparkling Lightning Lake. No maer the season - we’ve got acvies for everyone! There are a multude of accommodaon opons for your group as well. Camping is available year round (try winter camping for serious character building!) at Lone Duck Bay Group Campsite. Want a more civilized approach? Our walking tours will be the highlight of your class visit to Victoria. For fifteen years our thematic tours, geared to specific grade levels, have brought Victoria’s history to life for thousands of school classes. The Gold rush, Confederation, First Nations, the immigrant experience and family life are some of the most popular themes and can be set in Chinatown, Old Town and the Historic Harbour District. One of our specialties is Chinatown, the oldest in Canada. Through storytelling and hands-on activities our tours involve students in the lion dance, the popular gambling game known as fan tan and a visit to Tam Kung Temple, the oldest Chinese temple in the country. Depending on the grade level, we have many different tour options in Chinatown. One very popular Chinatown tour is based on White Jade Tiger, a novel often read in Grade 5. The tour goes to the places described in the book and uses items central to the story to create impact and understanding. Our tours can start in any downtown Victoria location and at various times to tie in with your field trip to the city. Favourite starting or ending points are the Parliament Buildings, Royal BC Museum, Bastion Square and Chinatown. Our tours take place year-round. For more information and tour ideas, or to make a booking, visit us online at www.discoverthepast.com or call us at 250.384.6698.

A powerful teaching tool designed to educate enlighten and engage students.

HUGE SELECTION

The Victoria IMAX Theatre offers teachers more than 25 films to inspire their students. Choose from the regularly scheduled films or from the extensive library of popular features*. Full listing of films available at www.imaxvictoria.com on the schools tab.

BC School Rate just $4.85 + GST For further information or assistance, please contact Jordan Batchelor groups@imaxvictoria.com

675 Belleville St., Victoria • 250-480-4887 ext 3 Free Teacher Preview Pass available to local educators. *Library films may be scheduled at 9am or 10am by groups of 35 or more.

“One of the most incredibly effective teaching tools, believe it or not, is movies.” Morgan Freeman (when discussing his role as narrator for Island of Lemurs: Madagascar) We could not agree more, which is why everyone in the IMAX documentary world directs a great deal of resources to ensuring every IMAX film created meets recognized educational standards. The intent is to offer a powerful teaching tool in a way that is easily integrated into existing curriculum.

Additional educator’s resources are made available online for each film, and print copies are often available upon request.

Since inception, IMAX has fulfilled that mandate by taking students to explore new worlds and new ideas. Scientists and explorers have cited an IMAX experience as influencing their career choice. In fact, NASA astronaut Susan Helms once said first thought about going to space after seeing The Dream is Alive in IMAX. The films are that inspiring!

In addition to the currently scheduled films, IMAX Victoria has over 25 additional films in the library, covering topics as diverse as space exploration, ancient civilizations, extreme environments and more. You can book the film of your choice at either 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. (or both for a double feature) with a minimum of 35 students. Please note there is no minimum student count to attend a film on the regular schedule.

Whether your students are aspiring artists, filmmakers, scientists or something else entirely, and whatever their age, IMAX will help you help them engage creatively.

Sea Wolf Adventures

Sea Wolf Adventures offers many unique opportunities to learn about the cultural history of the First Peoples of the BC Coast. Learn about the history of St. Michael’s Residential School through a powerful and moving presentation. St. Michael’s was located beside the world renowned U’mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay. During the summer from Thursday to Saturday, the tour includes a visit to the traditional bighouse to experience cultural song and dance. The bighouse is home to the world’s tallest totem pole, over 17 stories tall! Students can enjoy an adventurous 3-hour hike through the living museum of cultural artifacts on Hanson Island, where culturally modified trees still stand today as living archeological artifacts. The tree markings tell the stories of life of the Kwakwaka’wakw people, and your guide will help you discover it along a hike that includes some breathtaking views. We can provide shorter guided cultural tours, as well as coordinate multi-day experiences. We can meet kayakers and personal boaters at travel locations for on-thespot cultural information, storytelling and traditional singing. Guides are also available to be your personal guide at museums displaying kwakwaka’wakw artifacts. There are many, many possibilities and we look forward to designing a tour that will leave you informed and energized with the true spirit of our people.
