Barbette Igonia, CAE BCEA President and CEO

As we enter the BCEA’s 94th year, the Board has set up another two-year plan to grow and strengthen your association. You belong to an association that builds communities through education and advocacy by providing leadership, integrity, networking, and knowledge. Over the last 12 months, our U40 group and our women’s network has developed a strong platform to help their community learn, grow, and socialize. Events included round-table discussion on workplace conflict, peer-led meet and greets, Dale Carnegie courses, career fairs, as well as volunteering time with the Vancouver Food Bank. We encourage our members who have employees that fit into either of these communities to get them involved. Members have said that these events help them grow within their role and increase their network within the industry. On November 1 and 2, we had our second annual LINK Conference. We had a 50-per-cent increase in attendance and we received a lot of positive feedback on the future of this conference. Join us next year, on November 14 and 15, for the 2018 conference. In other areas of education, we continue to strengthen our partnership with other industry associations to offer education including basic electricity, code courses, and leadership training. Keep up to date on future educational opportunities through the BCEA website. Networking is a big part of the BC Electrical Association. From our curling bonspiel to our holiday awards luncheon, we give our members the opportunity to stay in touch with both their customers and their peers within the industry. But a big part of our networking events is the money raised for both the Vancouver Food Bank and the BCEA Scholarship and Bursary program. So, it’s not just about networking, it’s about giving back and we thank you! It continues to be a busy time in the electrical industry in BC. We strive to help you, our members, stay up to date on news and changes with in our industry. Our marketing committee developed a strong social media plan and our social media platform can help you get your message out. If you have news or job postings, let us know. The BCEA is on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Twitter (@BCElecAssoc). Follow us to see what’s happening in your industry and with the BCEA. We will continue to build on the momentum from the last 12 months into the coming year. It has been a pleasure working alongside Chair, Javi Richmond and look forward to a new year with our incoming Chair, Steve Crocker. A special thank you to our volunteers and Board for all their hard work and dedication. And, most importantly, thank you to Nazan and Caitlyn who work hard every day for you, our members! n

Hello BCEA members. We are approximately half way through our 2017/2018 year. It has been an action packed year, with many new initiatives underway. We appreciate the support of our members, committee members, and board of directors and thank them for their enthusiasm and commitment to the team. The BCEA is building communities through education and advocacy by providing leadership, integrity, networking, and knowledge. The BCEA is your link to the electrical community. To that end, BCEA President and CEO, Barbette Igonia, and her team coordinated and executed over 25 events in 2017. To further reach membership in all corners of the province, we are planning new events in the North and Vancouver Island regions. Please contact Barbette if you are interested in becoming a committee member in these regions. The LINK Conference was designed to be a B.C.-focussed event where education, networking, and planning could take place amongst members who do not participate in the national conferences. Our mission was to deliver a venue for regional and district managers to present marketing and sales initiatives to local teams. Our member and attendee feedback proved the LINK Conference to be a great forum for manufacturers, distributors, contractors, utilities, and agents to plan for business, personal, and professional development. Our Annual LINK Conference took place November 1st and 2nd in Vancouver and was a great success. We had 120 attendees, six educational presenters, a Dale Carnegie course, and numerous planning and networking meetings. Our speaker line-up included Daivd Mitchell, economist; Paul Sinkevich, who spoke about discovering your leadership style; Matt Heiydt on talent development; Ben Hope on Industry 4.0; Carol McGlogan on Electro Federation of Canada’s latest research report; and our closing TED talk speaker was Riaz Meghji on every conversation counts. Thank you to all the committee chairs and members. Without committee work, the BCEA doesn’t work. For those who would like to be involved, we encourage you to join a committee to make events, education, advocacy, and our conference better. Those who participate receive greater value from the association. Thank you to all board and executive members — you are the leadership and mentors of our industry. n

Membership Committee Chair It was another productive year within the BCEA and our industry in general, there is always a lot going on. The Board met in Kelowna in April for our strategic planning session, and it was very productive. The committees are all busy with the ideas and goals that were created to achieve. The U40 Committee continues to thrive, and the attendance at their events grows with every event. They are doing a great job in helping the young professionals in our industry. The newest women’s networking group also continues to grow, and it is encouraging to see more turnout from this committee as well. We encourage you to check out our website to see all the new and ongoing events and training we can provide to you, our members. Online courses continue to be a success and more being added as the result of feedback received from you! Our social media platform is another action plan that you need to check out. Be sure to find us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram! The updates are a great way to keep informed. One of the main goals of the BCEA is to be community focused. We had a Greater Vancouver Foodbank sorting day March 28th to help our local foodbanks. This was such a great success and another is scheduled for September 28th. We have already raised over $4,000! Our 25th annual golf tournament was a success with all proceeds going towards our bursaries and scholarships, as they do each year. We have raised over $17,000 for 2017 and over $450,000 since we started. Our team will be meeting on a regular basis and we would love to hear from you, our members, so we can continue to improve and deliver value to all facets of the industry. uch has been said about the millennial generation â&#x20AC;&#x201C; some of it good, and some of it less so. All

members of the electrical industry

will have a degree of familiarity, from either raising them, hiring them, and increasingly by being one. Good or bad, the electrical industry is one where few get out. For millennials that are new to the industry, this presents a barrier to integrating as many of the relationships were established before they were born.

For BCEA members and their companies, the onset of millennials in the workforce provides members of Generation X and the baby boomers with mentoring opportunities to give back to the industry, and to facilitate knowledge transfer to the generations that follow.

Millennials have a range in age and experience levels, with a corresponding range in positions within the industry. Ages range between 21-37, with positions ranging from warehousing, branch managers, regional managers, inside sales, outside sales, and so on. Much like preceding generations, there is a range with regards to work ethic, skillset, and attitude. Some millennials will prove the stereotypes, while others are the exception. Compared to other generations, what they have in common is youth and inexperience providing both frustration and opportunity. Membership and involvement in associations like the BCEA provides millennials an opportunity to invest in their future with the electrical industry, and consequently view it as a career and not only as a job. Involvement can start by attending events such as the U40 group and developing relationships and friendships with those similar in age and experience levels. For BCEA members and their companies, the onset of millennials in the workforce provides members of Generation X and the baby boomers with mentoring opportunities to give back to the industry, and to facilitate knowledge transfer to the generations that follow. Deloitte Global CEO, Punit Renjen described her path to success as hard work, some lucky breaks, and having great mentors. Millennials that rise to the top of their companies will be the ones who put in the work, and who were supported in their personal development. Research has shown that those who mentor others were six times more likely to receive a promotion, and those who were mentored were five times more likely. It also increased employee retention rate by 20 per cent. By increasing retention, the cost to invest in involvement with associations, mentoring, and training would provide financial benefits. Companies that minimize turnover minimize costs to train new employees, as well as reaping the

rewards of capturing more opportunities by having an experienced team. Millennials are stereotyped as only caring about what they make, and bouncing from company to company to make another buck an hour. According to a 2016 survey performed by Deloitte, financial incentives are a primary driver in employer choice, but factors such as leadership become a deciding factor for companies with similar levels of compensation. Providing leadership opportunities to millennials not only aids in retention, but also trains the future leaders of the company. For millennials, as their total compensation is low and they havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t had the time to develop their financial resources, the value in non-financial perks to a job are limited. Likely, this is no different than the situation the baby boomers found themselves in when they were the same age. In companies where millennials are invested in, they are more likely to view it as a career and be committed for the long term. Luckily for the millennials and future leaders of the electrical industry, the BCEA has multiple opportunities to get involved. Time spent volunteering on committees teaches how meetings work in the business world, and builds connections with a broad range of ages and experience levels. The LINK Conference (Leadership, Integrity, Network, Knowledge) provides what millennials are looking for in terms of learning, skill development, and networking. While millennials have been the focus for new employees entering the industry, the youngest members starting out are from the next generation after them. If the millennials are fully integrated and mentored by the generations ahead of them, they can do the same with the ones following in their footsteps.
