“We are by far the hottest and driest, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see significant growth of the Lillooet grapegrowing region in the next five years.”

The Aqua Wetland System balances variable wastewater from small wineries

oronto based Andrew Hellebust, P.Eng., has been collaborating with Lloyd Rozema of Aqua Treatment Technologies for over twenty years to design engineered treatment wetlands that process

Primarily serving Ontario’s main wine growing region in Niagara, Rivercourt and Aqua Treatment Technologies have two decades of experience treating winery wastewater. Small wineries produce relatively low amounts of wastewater for most of the year, mainly Aqua Wetland System to treat 2,500 L/d winery wastewater at a small Ontario winery.

Being attached, the bacteria are not vulnerable to wash out as they are in suspended growth systems. The bottom 0.25 m of the AWS has standing water which moves horizontally to the discharge pump basin. In treatment wetland terms, there is a vertical trickle filter with aerobic unsaturated

It’s going to be a very good year Wine making isn’t just an art. It’s also a complex chemical process and in today’s modern wineries, compressed gases play an increasingly important role in many aspects of bottled wine.

Dry ice (carbon dioxide) for cryomaceration

Dry ice (CO₂) is an ideal way to cool grapes in warm weather. When added during crushing, it can help keep the grape temperature down, which helps control the fermentation process. Linde also offers self-calibrating CO₂ monitors.

Argon vs. nitrogen for blanketing

Traditionally nitrogen (N₂) has been a safe, affordable choice for blanketing in both tanks and bottling. However, experience has shown that it’s not totally inert and can form nitrites. This is why, with Linde’s help, many wineries are switching to argon (Ar).

Argon’s 100% inert composition makes it a better choice for blanketing.

Dosing helps extend shelf life

Linde also offers liquid nitrogen (LN₂) or liquid argon (LAr) dosing which helps reduce the headspace oxygen in wine bottles and can extend shelf life by minimizing oxygen levels.
