FACED WITH A CHANGING climate, increased urbanization and a growing population, Canada is in critical need of sustainable agriculture solutions — and Brock University is ready to help.
Brock is building a state-of-the-art research farm to transform the country’s agriculture ecosystem into a selfreliant, sustainable model for the world.
Initiated by scientists and researchers at the University’s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI), the government-funded, multi-institutional Clean Agriculture for Sustainable Production project will help Canada’s grape and wine industry by developing high throughput screening methods for grapevine viruses and production processes for disease-free, high-quality grapevines. The project will also explore how “clean
plants” interact with other plants in field ecosystems, and measure urban applications of biodiversification efforts, such as green rooftops or community gardens.
With the Canadian grape and wine industry alone requiring an estimated 6.2 million new virus-free grapevines each year, the techniques developed to support this industry will spark a cascade of innovation, said project co-lead CCOVI Principal Scientist Sudarsana Poojari.

Nova Scotia’s growing wine industry
The tradition of winemaking in the province continues to evolve, contributing to the region’s reputation for producing distinctive wines

OVER THE PAST FIVE years, the farm wine industry in Nova Scotia has experienced significant and sustainable growth for an emerging wine region. This growth has generally been faster than anticipated, driven by increasing recognition of Nova Scotia wines both domestically and internationally.
Recognized as Canada’s original wine region, Nova Scotia’s history of viticulture dates back more than 400 years with the first plantings
being in Bear River. The province’s climate and geography, particularly around the Annapolis Valley and other microclimates throughout the province, provide ideal conditions for grape growing.
“The tradition of winemaking in Nova Scotia continues to evolve, contributing to the region’s reputation for producing distinctive wines,” says Haley Brown, Executive Director, Wine Growers Nova Scotia.

environmental factors— supports the cultivation of both hybrid grapes that do exceptionally well in cool climates and vinifera varieties such as Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Noir. These varieties have thrived and are receiving acclaim and awards not only across Canada, but globally. Boutique farm wine regions such as Nova Scotia are becoming sought after not only for their quality wines that are connected to the soil, but also as travel destinations, drawing visitors to experience the
scenic vineyards, wine tastings, maritime cultural charm, and hospitality.”
According to the latest data, there are approximately 20 licensed grape farm wineries and 70 grape growers in Nova Scotia. This number has been increasing steadily as more individuals and businesses invest in viticulture and winemaking in the region.
“The farm wine industry brings in $245 million of economic value to the province of Nova Scotia every year, and the vibrancy of our rural wine region is getting noticed,” says Brown.
Industry Recovery Challenges
While the province’s wine industry has had much success, it has not been without challenges particularly over the past five years, including disruptions caused by COVID-19, the polar vortex of 2023, and other environmental factors.
“However, the industry has shown resilience,” explains Brown. “It is bouncing back through various strategies such as diversifying offerings, enhancing marketing efforts, and continuing to innovate with quality and sustainability— whether it be environmental, community, or economic—being at the forefront.”
Also helping greatly is tourism. The Nova Scotia farm wine industry attracts well over 150,000 visitors annually. In 2019, nearly $50 million in tourism dollars was generated. Many tourists come from within the Maritimes, other parts of Canada, the United States, and increasingly from international markets such as Europe, all drawn by the scenic
vineyards, wine tastings, and culinary experiences.
“We are also hearing consistent feedback that we are seeing those 2019 numbers again, which is being well received with cautious optimism,” says Brown.
It is anticipated that by 2030, Nova
Scotia’s market share of wine sales will remain stable at 13.4 per cent. Several factors contribute to this stability, including steady growth over the past five years, increasing recognition of Nova Scotia wines, more investments in the industry, and broader distribution across Canada and internationally.

“As Nova Scotia wines become more renowned and are poured at restaurants coast to coast and elsewhere, this stable growth trajectory is expected to continue,” adds Brown.
Types of Wines Produced
Nova Scotia is known for producing a variety of wines, including hybrid varieties that excel in cool climates, and vinifera varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
While 80 per cent of the world’s wines are made from just 20 grape varieties, Brown says Nova Scotia takes pride in its unique varietals such as L’Acadie Blanc, which the region is known for and has put the province on the map.
“L’Acadie Blanc is a hybrid grape specifically suited for Nova Scotia’s climate, noted for its crisp acidity and delicate fruit flavours. Another standout in the region is Tidal Bay wine, an appellation unique to Nova Scotia and an ode to Old World appellations like Chianti, Champagne, and Bordeaux.”
She adds that it is the only appellation in North America crafted to reflect the terroir and characteristics of Nova Scotia’s maritime climate. “Tidal Bay wines are known for their bright acidity, floral aromatics, and notes of orchard fruits, showcasing how the farm wine region and community collaborate to produce distinctive wines that reflect their unique environment.”

Another grape variety that holds special significance for Nova Scotia is L’Acadie Blanc. Named after the historic region of Acadia, which included parts of present-day Nova Scotia, this grape is a hybrid developed specifically for the province’s climate by grape breeder J.H. Drapeau and Roger Dial, who were among the early pioneers who recognised its potential.
“L’Acadie Blanc has become a cornerstone of Nova Scotia’s farm wine industry, known for its ability to thrive in cool climates and produce wines with crisp acidity and delicate fruit flavours,” says Brown. “Its name pays homage to Nova Scotia’s heritage and is seen as an honour for the province, showcasing its unique contribution to the world of wine.”
Nova Scotia’s wine industry benefits significantly from its unique terroir, shaped in part by the Bay of Fundy and its world-renowned tides, which are the largest in the world. The bay’s moderate climate creates a cooler climate ideal for producing crisp and aromatic white wines, as well as delicate sparkling wines. The tidal action not only influences the climate, but also the soil composition along the coastline, contributing to the mineral-rich and well-drained soils that grapevines thrive in.

Farming and winemaking practices evolve with a focus on sustainability

WHEN ONE THINKS OF a specific industry that has evolved quickly over the past five years, many may think of technology. While this is definitely true, many may not know that the grape and wine industry has also seen tremendous growth in the past half-decade.

Lake. She says new wineries and virtual wineries are opening their doors and online stores across the province.
“Young-ish winemakers are making their own brands and crafting their wine in styles that are avant-garde and cheeky. It’s so exciting to witness,” says Solanki. “In the past five years we have seen a lot of investment in the grape and wine industry which has led to greater innovation and research helping us continue bettering the industry.”
Farming and winemaking practices have also evolved considerably, with the main the main focus being sustainability.
Cubby Sadoon can relate to this. As
assistant winemaker at Ferox Estate Winery at Niagara on the Lake, he says the industry has certainly evolved in the format of farming, viticulture, oenology and—from a more sociological standpoint— inclusivity.
“We have broken boundaries in Niagara, Ontario, and Canada, and it is safe to say that has happened internationally as well,” says Sadoon. “Regions like the Loire Valley have been at the forefront of winemaking in France, changing perceptions of what was considered classic in the country.”
He says there has also been a push toward a more scientific foundation in winemaking, allowing “New World” regions and countries to produce
wines that can compete with “Old World Europe” on a grandiose scale.
“Moreso, I do think there has been a change in guard, with a lot of winemakers, producers, and families that own vineyards and wineries passing it on generationally, allowing a fresh and youthful perspective on our relatively young industry, at least in Ontario,” says Sadoon. “For me personally, I entered the industry at the age of 18, and within a short span of time, started to produce for wineries domestically and internationally.”
He adds that the alcohol industry is a fickle one, with trends and fads influencing perception and buying. “And the more young people that enter, the better our grasp is on
what is considered ‘popular’ and our ability to cater to what is demanded.”
Big push
Currently heading into her third harvest, Allison Findlay is the first female winemaker at the Niagara College Teaching Winery. She says it is her responsibility to mentor and educate the next generation of winemakers, while also managing the production of a 3,500-case estate winery.
“What I love most about the wine industry is that there are no two days or wines that are the same,” says
Findlay. “My job is never boring, and I love that I get to play mad scientist and creative director all in the same day.”
She says young people have always been interested in this industry, and that many of her students come to it from a previous education background or after a few years of work experience.

“They want a job they are passionate about. As the industry evolves, I envision more young people entering the industry through traditional and more diverse opportunities.”
Findlay believes that the biggest way to bring people into the industry is to show them that it is moving forward with sustainability in mind. “The wine industry is often regarding as a refined, luxury product, steeped in tradition, which may feel inaccessible to most of the world. To show that we are here for people that are new to the industry is very important. Wine is farming, art, science, history, geography and, most importantly, it’s for everyone. The future of our industry relies on the fact that the world is going through climate and social changes. We need to adapt with those changes.”
Solanki adds that in her area they are very fortunate to have two great post-secondary schools nearby that focus on winemaking and grape growing and provide practical and technical teachings, giving students the opportunity to work in the field during their education.
“These academic institutions are drawing young people to our region who then stay and build their careers in the grape and wine industry. We need to show that there are not just two jobs—grape grower or winemaker—but many different opportunities in the industry, from research, to marketing, to business management, sales, accounting,
Is Ontario at a crucial junction?
Cubby Sadoon, assistant winemaker at Ferox Estate Winery at Niagara on the Lake—believes the wine industry in Ontario is at a crucial junction and without the help of provincial and federal legislation, it could arrive at a point of no return.
“Ontario has an abundance of incredible producers and growers, and collectively we need to highlight this without being distracted by international wines and their markets.
In recent years, varieties like Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir have put Ontario on a global map, and we need to sustain that push.”
He also says that taxation in Ontario for the wine industry needs to be looked at more carefully.
“On average, 73 per cent of the price paid for every bottle of wine sold in Ontario is taxes and fees, which is high. With producers working a 27-per cent margin, it becomes difficult as a business to compete with Products of Canada or international wine, without justifiably having higher price points.”

Sadoon believes it is important to advocate for educational institutions to offer more industry-relevant programs, and to seek more co-op options with existing wineries—both virtual and brick-and-mortar. He says a move towards demystifying the industry—which for the longest time has had barriers to entry—would help attract more.
“Universities like Brock have an open house through CCOVI (Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute) that have brought wineries in the region to come and see prospective graduates for employment or coops, which I think is a great way to ensure they stay within the industry
He says that this, in turn, reflects all the effort, skill and hard work that goes into an artisanal bottle of wine. Governing bodies like VQA, Ontario Craft Wineries, and WMAO (Wine Marketing Association of Ontario) have been petitioning to see legislation changed, which will reduce additional financial stressors on local producers, but this advocacy needs more impetus from all fronts to ensure continued growth in Ontario.
“Ending on a positive note, Ontario has been taking cues from global trends, with more low-alcohol, balanced white, and sparkling wines. This in turn, is converting newer generations of drinkers to pick wines as their alcohol of choice. The increase in canned wines, and “raw” styles of wine like pétillant naturel has removed the perceived pretentiousness of wines, with a focus on grape, craft, and story. This is attracting more wine tourism to regions like Niagara and Prince Edward County, which benefits us all!”

He adds that this could bring individuals in programs such as microbiology, analytical sciences, and organic chemistry into wine, without losing foundational skillsets.
“It would be helpful if postsecondary institutions highlight graduates from wine-based programs more often via their marketing campaigns, so that there
is an ability to follow alumni from admission to working in the industry, and their impact over the years.”
What’s next?
As for where the Ontario wine growing industry is headed in the next five years, Solanki says there is a need for government officials to continue to invest and support the local grape and wine industry and ensure that policies are in place to help grow the industry sustainably with local at the forefront.
“Like all other industries, no matter the commodity, there is no magic ball to show what the future will be like. But there are things we can do to ensure that there is growth and stability. In farming, we rely heavily

on the environment and our climate. As farmers, we are essentially caretakers of the land, and it is our duty to be proactive in how we farm so that the land is sustainable and regenerative for future generations.”
Sadoon says while there is currently growth in the industry, it is difficult to predict the future. “Jobs are being created, and the industry is growing, but it’s a matter of perspective. I do think more could be done with respect to supporting local wineries being able to hire
talented individuals and keeping them within the team as they grow. Job security is an interesting topic, given that a lot of winemakers and production staff move every so often within the industry. As long as there is continued infrastructure-based improvements and input into the industry, we will continue seeing job growth and security well beyond 2030.”
Findlay adds that the future of winemaking and grape growing is going to be focused on innovation
and sustainability. “There is also room for growth in the marketing and sales of Ontario wines. These are excellent products, and everyone has a unique and important story behind them. We just need the right people to tell it. Our industry is strong, and we are entering a place where we are slowly shifting to the next generation of winemakers and grape growers that have had the privilege of learning from and being mentored by pioneers of our industry.” s

Despite climate-related setbacks and a challenging tourism season, B.C. wineries have remained open and resilient, eager to welcome visitors and share their unique offerings.

B.C. wine country is made up of several Geographical Indications (GIs), each with its own distinct terroir, microclimate, and character. These regions create a rich mosaic of wine styles that reflect the land’s diversity and the winemakers’ dedication.

B.C.’s wine industry continues to draw talent from around the world, helping to shape a distinct identity that is increasingly recognized for its quality and innovation. Orenda Safety Services: Enhancing workplace safety in the wine industry
Penticton-based business provides services to a wide variety of business including wineries, breweries, manufacturing companies, and more

As the owner of Orenda Safety Services in Penticton, B.C., Sheldon McKee has extensive experience as a safety professional ranging from oil and gas to the wine and beer industry.
Celebrating his 21st year in the business, he holds two trade certifications as a welder and mechanic and has worked on many of the machinery and welded tanks that are in the wine industry. He probably couldn’t be in a better location than Penticton with its more than 180
vineyards in one of the best wine regions in the country.
“I moved to Penticton 22 years ago and am able to use my transferable skills in the safety profession here that can provide tangible and quantifiable results,” says McKee.

When asked about some of the challenges wine industry professionals face that requires his consulting services, McKee says sometimes they do not fully understand how to implement safety as required by the regulatory bodies.
“I am able to assist them and help them realize that safety does make them money and saves them money. It is just on the back end of the business and some of the savings are not as tangible as seeing actual money.”
Common Safety Risks
When asked what some of the most common safety risks are that exist in the wine industry, he doesn’t miss a beat. “Confined spaces and machinery injuries. Many times, protective devices are removed or disabled as they are viewed as inconvenient.”
There are also cultural differences as many wineries are
owned by individuals from a wide range of countries.
“Their view of safety may by different from those in Canada,” explains McKee. “I spend a lot of time explaining occupational health and safety, and that the workers have three rights, which include the right to know about health and safety matters; the right to participate in decisions that could affect their health and safety; and the right to refuse work that could affect their health and safety and that of others.”
He recalls a specific incident where cultural differences did create a safety issue.
“A winery was ordered to have confined space hazard assessments but kept delaying it. As a last resort, the authority having jurisdiction put a stop work order against them. A competing safety provider gave them a quote that was extremely high. A colleague of mine mentioned my name to them.”
McKee said he was called, and a meeting was scheduled, whereby he looked at the winery’s configurations and offered solutions to entering the winery tanks.

“I priced out the traditional confined space training, equipment, and production time that would be affected. I then presented readily available equipment that would clean their tanks as they desired. The cost was less than the traditional path, and it allowed for no production loss. The only confined spaces they had to enter was the juice presses,” he says. “The end result was they got the order closed and had a system that allowed them to be compliant and productive.”
When not working, McKee loves living in Penticton and has visited many of the region’s wineries where he has developed a preference for his wines. “I like Pinot Gris from Tinhorn Creek and Hester Creek. Burrowing Owl has a great fortified wine, and I really like fortified wine on a cold winter day.”

Why website updates are important
(And how to know if you need one)

I CAN FEEL YOUR eyerolls and hear your inner voice about this topic. You already have a website, and it works fine. You spent good money to develop it two, three, maybe four years ago. Why do you need to worry about it when so many other priorities are vying for attention and budget?
You will never be current
The only constant thing about technology is that it is constantly changing – and at a frightening pace. Would it surprise you to know that since 2010, new technology and data have increased so fast that it is estimated that 90% of the world’s data – like, since forever – was generated in the last two years alone?
When new operating systems are released, they push new hardware to be created (or vice versa), which then mandates software to be updated, which then requires all the plug-ins, ancillary functions, and code to be updated. This all ultimately feeds an environment in which we are continually being faced with new ways of consuming digital content, which ultimately necessitates that we evolve our behaviour continually.
In short, we are in constant learning mode. We no longer need to be told to click here>> on buttons or underlined words, and we know that three little bars on the top of a screen will drop down a menu when we click on it. As technology develops, we absorb that behaviour and move on until the next iteration.
This is why websites built even a few years ago don’t look or function like modern websites and don’t behave the same way either. Our screens used to be smaller, so websites were square, images were embedded in text, and there was a lot of text! Now, pages are wider, and scrolling is universally acceptable and even preferred.
It’s like rolling down windows or turning a key to start a car. It may work, but you’re now used to automatic windows and push-button starters. A window is a window just like a navigation bar is a navigation bar, but the way you instinctively interact with it changes. And if you’re causing your visitors to pause to figure things out for even a split second, you will lose sales.
According to the Nielsen Norman Group, who are experts in research-based user experience,“Even a few seconds’ delay is enough to create an unpleasant user experience. Users are no longer in control, and they’re consciously annoyed by having to wait for the computer. Thus, with repeated short delays, users will give up unless they’re extremely committed to completing the task. The result? You can easily lose half your sales (to those lesscommitted customers) simply because your site is a few seconds too slow for each page.”
You might be thinking that your website edits are just cosmetic, and not an issue. But would you give a website with a dated design your credit card? What about a website with last year’s events on it, and missing images in the cart or broken links? Probably not.
And you wouldn’t be alone. A Stanford study found that 75% of users judge a company’s credibility based on its website design, and 94% of first impressions are design related. This means that having a professional-looking website can significantly impact your business.
Google is watching you
All things being equal, Google will place a higher priority on sites that update their content frequently.
You could keep writing and producing more content to get good Google rankings. But this is complicated and takes a lot of time. Updating old content requires less work and delivers faster results, which can only benefit your overall content marketing strategy.
Update your old content and improve your freshness score to increase the effectiveness of your SEO efforts and boost your search engine traffic. When you tell Google your content is new, you’ll get a spike in traffic, making the tiny amount of work required well worth it. If Google recognizes that your site hasn’t been updated recently, it will hurt the rankings of all your pages.
Some things you might want to update:
• New information as it becomes available, such as scores, vintages, and team members.
• Irrelevant information, such as updates about past holidays, fire closures, or vintages you don’t sell anymore.
• Underperforming content – if you check Google Analytics and nobody is looking at your recipes, then it’s time to think of new ways to showcase food pairings.
• Also, update if you just have old content. Some pages that haven’t been looked at since they were posted have a high probability of having broken backlinks. This is

typical for wineries with links to past articles about them in their news section.
WordPress likes to be in charge
Another reason to update your site is that outdated WordPress plugins can damage it. Ignoring your WordPress update notifications may be one of the easiest things to do, but it’s also probably the most damaging. Inconsistent updates can lead to serious security issues, compatibility problems, and technical debt.
Security. Updates prevent security vulnerabilities and increase the overall security of your site. When a new version of WordPress comes out, it automatically fixes any security vulnerabilities discovered since the last version. This means you do not have to worry about manually applying patches. As long as you keep up to date with the latest WordPress versions, you’ll always be protected from known bugs and security vulnerabilities.
Reliability. Updates make your plugins more reliable. Over the years, we have noticed a pattern with many WordPress plugins; they work fine at first, and then, as I mentioned, software and hardware get changed, and if not updated, the plugins eventually stop working altogether.
Efficiency. Updating your plugins makes them better at what they do. In other words, your plugins will work better over time. When you install an update, the new version of the plugin automatically optimizes code, speeds up operations, and eliminates unnecessary code.
Compatibility. Updating plugins helps them stay compatible with the latest versions of WordPress. Each plugin’s repository page shows the current version of WordPress it supports. If a plugin does not show a version number, it means that it is no longer maintained.
Types of Content
As a general rule, we recommend that most businesses should be updating their website at least once a month. This gives you enough time to make small changes and updates as needed without overwhelming yourself or your team. Of course, if you have the resources to update your site more frequently, then you should definitely do so.
Guidelines to plan your updates in the future
Static content
If you have a simple website with just a few pages of static content, then you probably don’t need to update it more than once or twice a year. Of course, if you have news or events that you want to share with your visitors, then you can update your website more frequently. But in general, a static corporate website doesn’t need to be updated too often.
Written content
If you have a blog or news website, then you’ll need to update your site much more frequently – ideally, on a daily basis. This is because people who visit these types of websites are looking for new, fresh content. If you’re not updating your site regularly, then they’ll quickly lose interest and move on to another site.
eCommerce content
On the other hand, if you have an e-commerce site with dozens of products, you’ll need to update your site much more frequently. This is because you’ll need to add new products and update product descriptions and pricing.
Visual content
And finally, don’t forget images as part of your content. You should be updating your product images with vintage changes, but also, if you can update your images with the seasons about your tasting room and visitation, it will give cues that you are a special place to visit any time of the year.
Your website is a part of your overall marketing plan
If all of this seems daunting, divide and conquer. Ask your assistant winemaker to give you three or four sentences and photos of the vineyard each month. Task the tasting room with writing fun copy for the weekend events. If everyone gets in the habit of updating a website and it is kept updated, it is less of a chore than if it’s been neglected for months or even years.
Your social media pages also offer a great opportunity to promote your website and keep it updated. You can use social media to share new blog posts, announce product
updates, run contests, and even incorporate short-form videos. Just make sure that you’re not spamming your followers with too many promotions, or you’ll risk losing them. A good rule is to post one promotion for every ten pieces of content that you share. This way, you’re still providing valuable information to your followers while also promoting your website.
One of the best ways to ensure that your website is being updated regularly is to create a content calendar. This will help you to schedule your posts in advance and make sure that you’re always publishing new content. You can use a tool such as Google Calendar or Trello to create your content calendar, or you can simply use a spreadsheet. Whichever method you choose, make sure that you update your calendar on a regular basis so that you can always be prepared with new content.
Finally, it’s important to keep track of your website’s stats so that you can see how your updates are impacting
your traffic and performance. Google Analytics is a great free tool that you can use to track your website’s traffic. By monitoring your stats, you can see which changes are having the most positive impact on your website. This will help you to determine which updates are worth investing more time and effort in, and it will also help you avoid making changes that don’t improve your site’s performance.
