Message from the President of the Fort McMurray Construction Association

Keith Plowman .

We want to thank you for being such an integral part of our membership. Each member adds value to our community.

On behalf of the directors and staff of the Fort McMurray Construction Association (FMCA), we wish all our members and other local industry stakeholders and participants well as the 2018 construction season begins. In 2017, we started the long and arduous process to rebuild our community after 2,579 structures were lost to the 2016 Horse River Fire, all while dealing with an unpredictable economy. As we enter 2018, the economy looks a little brighter with some stabilization of oil prices, increases in job creation and the continuation of the rebuild efforts. As of March 23, 2018, 456 dwellings have had their final inspections — 1,447 foundation, 1,198 framing and 1,232 insulation/vapour barrier inspections — completed. The FMCA board of directors and staff are determined to make the FMCA the voice of construction. This goal requires a range of strategies be coherently and effectively executed to raise the profile and influence of the FMCA in the communities where its members exist. To achieve this goal, we have been very busy at the FMCA expanding and improving the services we offer members and broadening our interactions with government and other organizations on behalf of members: • Advocacy and Representation: FMCA continues to speak to local, provincial and federal governments on your behalf, and progress is being made on key issues (for example, prompt payment). • Plan room: Enhancement of COOLNet Alberta, the industry’s leading online bidding tool. Working with the seven other provincial construction associations, we’ve mobilized key personnel to manage the process by placing the user first. • Networking: We are looking for new and fun ways to bring our current and prospective members together in a fun environment to share information and build strong relationships. We want to thank you for being such an integral part of our membership. Each member adds value to our community and that is why we are committed to serving and engaging our members in every way possible. n

In March, our government released budget 2018 and the 2018-23 capital plan. Through the capital plan, we are investing $26.6 billion in public infrastructure. These investments will support good jobs in the trades, engineering and design. The private sector is putting more Albertans back to work, and so we are focusing our public dollars on removing obstacles to further economic growth. In Fort McMurray, construction is now underway at the Willow Square Continuing Care Centre. There will be more to share as we reach completion milestones over the months ahead. This deal provides $17.9 million for public transit in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, as well as funding streams for community recreation facilities and green infrastructure. There is also a dedicated fund for rural and northern communities. I look forward to working with your community groups and municipal government to explore potential projects in Fort McMurray. I was very pleased to meet with the Fort McMurray Construction Association at the end of April, and to hear your experience and advice. Our government is committed to a recovery that is built to last. the Alberta Construction Association’s (ACA) board of directors has adjusted the association’s strategic plan accordingly. ACA acknowledges and appreciates the vital leadership of the regional construction associations across Alberta to ensure effective twoway communication and action from the grass roots membership.

Reducing risks faced by Alberta’s construction industry has gained prominence. CCA’s new strategic plan strives to build a better Canada By Mary Van Buren, president, Canadian Construction Association In 2017, the Canadian Construction Association (CCA) embarked on a year-long process engaging with members and stakeholders from across the country to develop a new five-year plan. Approved at CCA’s latest board meetings in Banff in March, you can view the plan at plan.cca-acc.com. The vision of the plan is to “Build a Better Canada” by inspiring a progressive, innovative and sustainable construction industry that consistently acts with integrity.

DIRECTOR – Dean Stewart Dean Stewart has worked in Fort McMurray for the past nine-plus years and has lived here with his family for more than seven years. He is a self-employed journeyman plumber and gasfitter and has had opportunities in various areas of that trade — new home construction, renovations, commercial and light industrial, as well as service work and insurance claims. He is well versed in Alberta code and is always learning and expanding his knowledge base. He loves his job and loves owning his own company, MasterTech Plumbing, which currently has five employees. Stewart is looking forward to travelling to Japan in spring 2018 to tour the Rheem tankless hot water tank plant — he won an all-expense paid trip there for being the top seller of this product in the region and one of the top sellers in Canada. In his spare time, Stewart likes to travel and spend time with his family.

DIRECTOR – Cass Rhynes Cass Rhynes is the owner and operator of Turning Point Surveys Ltd., which provides survey, line locating, geotechnical, and design services across Alberta. Rhynes is extremely motivated, working tirelessly to ensure his company continues its sustainable growth into the future. He has experienced much change during his 12 years in the construction industry and strongly believes congruency and open mindedness are the key principles to a company’s continued growth. Rhynes, his wife Helen and their daughter Aislyn are originally from Prince Edward Island and now proudly call Fort McMurray home. Rhynes loves the construction industry and feels privileged to have the opportunity to represent FMCA members. He is committed to doing what is best for the future of the construction industry and its people in Fort McMurray.

DIRECTOR – Adam Temple Adam Temple has been in Fort McMurray since 2007, starting out as a survey assistant with North American. Over the next five years, Adam worked his way through the ranks and finished his certificate at Northern Lakes College in survey theory and calculations. In 2012, Temple and Ryan Dunbar started Inline Construction Surveys Ltd. and began working with Ledcor Group on the early works portion of the Fort Hills project. As the project grew, so did Inline. Over the project duration, Inline worked directly for Suncor as their prime survey contractor along with some of the largest contractors in Alberta; PCL, Ledcor and Bird to name a few. In 2017, Inline Construction Surveys Ltd. changed its name to Inline Group Inc. and expanded to offer geotechnical and environmental services to their clients, creating a one-stop shop for surveying and geotechnical testing on projects of any size. Recently, Temple has been working toward completing his MBA with AIB and continues to develop his management skills through different courses and workshops. His passion for business keeps him striving to improve himself as a leader and improve his company any way he can. 22 Fort McMurray Construction Association

board of directors DIRECTOR – Brandon Hulan Brandon Hulan started with H. Wilson Industries (2010) Ltd. in the summer of 2010 as an estimator, after successfully completing his civil engineering technology diploma at the College of the North Atlantic in Corner Brook, N.L. He is currently the lead estimator at H. Wilson and is responsible for leading the company’s estimating needs for all projects the company pursues. Hulan also is responsible for building and cultivating relationships with returning and future clients throughout the Fort McMurray region. He regularly provides his services to all of H. Wilson’s clients with a hands-on approach to ensure the clients’ expectations and budget constraints are being met and attended too. When he is not concentrating his time on estimating, Hulan helps the project management group at H. Wilson by managing and executing several smaller projects throughout the summer construction season. Apart from his day-to-day responsibilities at H. Wilson Industries (2010) Ltd., Hulan has been on the board of directors of the FMCA for the past three years. He frequently attends FMCA meetings and luncheons where he provides input and guidance on best practices within the construction industry in the region.

Ground breaks on

Willow Square Continuing Care Centre project

By Danica Taylor

Shovels have finally hit the ground for the new Willow Square Continuing Care Centre, giving many senior Fort McMurray residents the option to stay closer to home as they age. Construction on the long-awaited 14,800-square-foot building began in April 2018 and will be home to 144 beds. The care centre is expected to bring 240 new jobs to the region. A remaining 30 per cent of lot space is being saved for possible future developments, like an agingin-place facility for independent seniors before they transition to continuous care. Construction is scheduled to wrap up before the end of 2019, with residents expected to start moving in during the spring of 2020. This $110-million project, which has been in the works since around 2006, is much-needed in Fort McMurray. Because of the lack of accommodations, many seniors have been forced to either live at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre or leave the community. Now, seniors can not only stay in the area, but close to friends and family with the facility’s downtown location. To further the idea of community, the centre is planning programs for not only seniors, but also individuals of all ages living with disabilities.

City that prides itself on creating innovative buildings with state-of-the-art technology. S2 Architecture is more local with offices in Calgary and Edmonton and looks to weave the community’s culture into their projects. Their designs also reflect a commitment to delivering spaces that promote community living and stay environmentally conscious. Pomerleau Inc. will also be partnering with Janick Electric, an Ontario-based company, for this project. The design, which the government of Alberta revealed in February 2018, is a clear reflection of the type of community Fort McMurray is: one that sticks together. This family-oriented concept invites everyone to enjoy the new space. Plans include a playground, an intergenerational park and an indoor café with a large seating area. Willow Square will also have a series of pathways that will make it easier for residents to move around the building and get to other amenities such as public transit. Plans for the centre also include

community to help him make the family’s life a little easier. Taking advantage of a break in the cold weather on Jan. 4, 2018, a team began demolition on the most-affected side of the trailer. On the evening of Jan. 15, Martin drove the Morgans to the airport for their week-long trip to Florida, including a visit to Disney World, courtesy of Children’s Wish Foundation. As soon as the Morgans left, Martin and his crew of volunteers started the major home renovation project. More than 110 companies, including many Fort McMurray Construction Association (FMCA) members, were involved with the construction or other facets of the project. People worked night and day, nearly tearing the whole house down to build it back up. Martin said most of the project’s success came down to teamwork. "We lucked out a few times, lastminute deals and sponsorships, last-minute changes, but the main reason was the strength and come togetherness of Fort McMurray in times of need,” Martin said. “It’s a place like no other." 32 Fort McMurray Construction Association

Despite working in -35 C temperatures and having sponsors drop out last minute, the team pulled off what some thought impossible. On top of the huge number of volunteers, individuals and businesses put forward $300,000-worth of goods and monetary donations to help complete construction. The renovated home was unrecognizable once the crew was finished with it, boasting new siding, insulation, plumbing and electrical. It even had updated appliances, new furniture and heated floors. To help with Lily’s condition, the volunteers installed a HRV system big enough for an entire apartment floor, giving the Martin family clean air to breathe
