A great month for the Canadian economy Message from Minister Amarjeet Sohi, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources October of 2018 was an exciting month for the Canadian economy. The continued work and historic investments of our government have combined to make Canada the fastest-growing economy in the G7, and Alberta’s economy is the fastest growing of all the provinces and territories. In October we saw great signs for continued economic growth going forward. To begin, on October 2, LNG Canada announced a $40-billion investment in Canada – the largest private sector investment in our history. The LNG project is a milestone moment for our energy sector. cannot continue to innovate, attract investment, and create jobs. That is not how Albertans or our companies operate, and the recent economic growth reflects that. We are not afraid of doing the hard work necessary to bring certainty to Canada’s energy sector. That spirit of hard work will be essential as we move forward with the next steps for the Trans Mountain Expansion project. Our government truly believes the Trans Mountain Expansion project is an investment in Canada’s future, but it must move forward in the right way. I am committed to doing the hard work necessary to ensure that this process moves forward in a focused, efficient, and meaningful way. That process will require a review of marine protection and the impact of this project on marine life – something

our government has already taken action on with our $1.5-billion Ocean Protecting Plan. It also requires our government to engage in meaningful consultations, without a predetermined outcome, with the First Nations groups affected by the pipeline. As we move through these consultations, we will have the best available advice and expertise from within and outside of government. To ensure this, we have appointed former Supreme Court Justice Frank Lacobucci as a federal representative to oversee the consultation process. There is much reason for optimism in our industry and for Fort McMurray. There is no doubt in my mind that our best days are yet to come. n

On the administration side of things, there is horizontal fibrecement siding and trim to reflect more of the residential or rustic cabin look.” The roof over the apparatus bay is low-slope asphalt shingles over wood decking, and on top of the roof ridgeline is a metal bird rail. Some portions of the roof over the administration area, at the corners of the building, are also low-slope shingled and peaked with metal bird rests, which helps screen some of the rooftop equipment located on the flat roof area in the centre, accessed from the secondfloor mechanical room. At the very top of the hose tower is a cupola which houses the existing community siren, relocated from the old fire hall, symbolizing the gathering of the community and which goes off at certain times of the The fire hall was actually in the design process before the Fort McMurray wildfires in 2016. day. “The existing siren is a historical element of the community that we are trying to incorporate into the new fire hall, transitioning from the old,” says Todd Beaumaster, architectural technologist for Stantec, adding that there are a number of features in the building that incorporate a firefighting aesthetic. “There is this nice feature in the training/kitchen area, a pass-through with a rolling counter shutter from the kitchen into the training room, and that wall is designed to look like the back of a firetruck. There are taillights, equipment, a ladder, a handle bar, and fire extinguishers mounted on there. The firetruck motif is also

incorporated into the training room display cabinets.” The project isn’t LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, however they did shadow a number of LEED features to make it a more sustainable building. The Stantec mechanical division, in conjunction with the architecture division, went through the energy requirements of the station and balanced it with the building insulation used to make it a high-performing building. The apparatus doors are also “sunshine” doors, allowing natural light to come into the apparatus bays. Of course, with every project comes its set of challenges. The fire hall was actually in the design process before the Fort McMurray wildfires in 2016. Ironically, since it was such a vital service, it was one of the first projects that the RMWB proceeded with. Some of the design aspects of the building were changed after the fires, for example, they reevaluated their landscaping philosophy and looked at the

FireSmart program, which looks at ways in which wildfire might threaten structures and property.
“We removed the mulch material that would have been used in favour of rocks and changed some of the things we did do in terms of landscaping,” says Davidson. The fire hall officially opened on October 20, 2018. There was a dedication to the late Bo Cooper, a firefighter who passed away from leukemia in 2016. There are also a number of plaques around the perimeter of the building, which honour firemen and people who have lost their life in service. Now that the building is officially open, it will provide the volunteer fire fighters in the community with a state-ofthe-art building. In addition to Anzac, the fire hall will also service the nearby Gregoire Lake Estates, as well as the entire region. “I think from a municipal perspective it speaks to our commitment to public safety,” says Hardiman. “We’re always making sure we develop the right type of infrastructure and having those assets there for our residents. Obviously, you don’t ever want there to be a disaster, but our community certainly has its ups and The fire hall officially opened on October 20, 2018. When designing the building, Yogi Selliah, Alberta Infrastructure’s senior project manager for the Willow Square Continuing Care Centre, says that the architects were going for more of a home-like feel for residents. “The architecture is based on a residential feel and approach to it. The building is designed to offer natural light and access to off-site views,” says Selliah, who says that there will also be a veranda which features a view for residents to enjoy, as well as a playground in the front. “[It’s called an] Intergenerational Park, which provides access to young kids from within the community, as well as elders, bridging the gap between the young group and the residents in the facility.” The building design also features a structural slab construction that uses a modular system to speed up construction, and they are utilizing more technologies that will lessen the

So far, there have been no challenges in constructing the centre aside from the tight schedule.
