Dear Chamber Members and Community Partners,

It has truly been an honour to contribute to the legacy of the Fort Saskatchewan and District Chamber of Commerce. As we celebrate its 120th anniversary, I feel immense gratitude for the opportunity to play a small role in the Chamber’s journey. Over the years, the Chamber has been a strong advocate for business growth and community development, creating an environment where enterprises can thrive. Our unwavering commitment to supporting the local economy has been a fundamental part of our mission.

Since its inception, the Chamber has made a significant impact on the community, starting when local businessmen united to establish a trade route across the North Saskatchewan River, collaboratively working to bring positive change to our area.

This year, we are also excited to celebrate the 40th

edition of our Business Awards. These awards recognize the exceptional achievements and contributions of businesses, highlighting their crucial role in shaping our region’s economic landscape.

One of my favourite Chamber initiatives is the markets that showcase local artisans! Visiting the Holiday Market is my go-to for finding all the gifts I need for the season. In the summer, I cherish soaking up the sunshine while enjoying fresh fruits, vegetables, and handmade goods at our Farmers Market—it’s truly a highlight of my week!

The Chamber celebrates 120 years

The Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce has a rich and vibrant history that mirrors the evolution of the community it serves. For 120 years, the Chamber has been the voice of business in the region, fostering economic growth and supporting local businesses.

The Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce, as it is known today, got its origins from the Fort Saskatchewan Board of Trade. This Board of Trade was established on the evening of January 25, 1904, when 17 concerned businessmen got together to form a group that would guide the economic development of the community for decades to come. At that time, just six years after Fort Saskatchewan was established as a town, the community was a small but growing settlement with deep roots as a

North-West Mounted Police fort, established in 1875. The formation of the Chamber reflected the ambitions of local entrepreneurs and business leaders who wanted to create a collaborative platform to address shared concerns, promote commerce, and advocate for infrastructure and services needed for growth of the community.

In the early years, the Board of Trade played an important and influential role in the development of the village and concerned itself with all phases of the community, including governance. Despite its hopes that the population would grow with the arrival of the railroad in 1905, the population of Fort Saskatchewan would remain mostly unchanged until the arrival of industry in the 1950s.

In the mid-20th century, Fort Saskatchewan underwent a dramatic transformation with the establishment of large-scale industrial projects, particularly in the petrochemical sector. The Chamber was actively involved in advocating for policies that supported industrial expansion while ensuring that local businesses also benefitted from this economic boom. The arrival of companies such as Dow Chemical and Sherritt Gordon Mines in the 1950s marked a turning point for the community, driving population growth and creating new opportunities for local entrepreneurs. During this time, the Board of Trade evolved to the more modern Fort Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce. With more industry and jobs arriving in the region, the population grew and became a city in 1985.

Throughout this period, the Chamber expanded its focus, advocating not only for agricultural and industrial interests but also for the retail and service sectors that were growing alongside the city’s population.

As Fort Saskatchewan transitioned from a small town into a bustling

city, the Chamber adapted to the changing economic landscape. By the 1980s, the organization had broadened its mandate to include tourism, environmental stewardship, and small business development.

The Chamber’s events, such as the annual trade show and networking luncheons, became vital forums

for local businesses to connect, collaborate, and grow.

Today, the Fort Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce continues to be a driving force in the local economy. The Chamber works closely with government officials at the local, provincial, and federal levels to ensure that the interests of its members are represented.

Celebrating community all year long Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce Annual Trade Show & Christmas Marketplace

The Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce knows how to bring the community together, and two of their most anticipated events—held months apart—perfectly encapsulate the spirit of local commerce and festive fun. The Annual Trade Show, held in the spring, and the Christmas Marketplace, taking place each November, are standout events on the calendar, each offering unique experiences for residents and visitors alike.

As winter fades and spring breathes new life into the community, the Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce kicks off the business season with its highly anticipated Annual Trade Show & Market. Held at the Dow Centennial Centre, this event is a showcase of innovation, entrepreneurship, and local business pride. It draws in thousands of visitors

eager to discover what the region has to offer.

The Trade Show brings together businesses of all sizes and industries—from established local companies to new startups—offering a platform for them to connect with potential customers, partners, and the broader community. With over 100 exhibitors, visitors can explore a wide range of products and services, from cutting-edge technology and construction services to beauty products, health care, and home décor. With the addition of the Farmers Market, the show also highlights local growers, makers and bakers – the perfect start to market season.

For business owners, the Trade Show is a chance to demonstrate their offerings, make lasting impressions, and forge new business relationships. It’s not just about generating sales

but about strengthening community ties and showcasing the breadth of talent and innovation that Fort Saskatchewan has to offer.

This springtime event is a significant driver of economic activity in the region and a powerful reminder of the Chamber’s mission to support and grow local businesses.

As the holiday season approaches, the Christmas Marketplace transforms the Dow Centennial Centre into a winter wonderland, welcoming shoppers looking for unique, handmade, and locally produced gifts. This November event has become a beloved tradition for families across Fort Saskatchewan, offering the perfect blend of holiday shopping, entertainment, and community spirit.

The Christmas Marketplace is a haven for artisans and craftspeople. Local vendors offer a wide array of

handmade goods, from cozy knitted scarves and custom ornaments to artisanal food products like jams, chocolates, and baked goods. For shoppers, it’s the ideal place to find that special, thoughtful gift for loved ones, all while supporting the local economy.

In addition to shopping, the Christmas Marketplace also shines a spotlight on local non-profits and community groups, many of whom host booths to engage with the public. It’s a reminder that the holiday season is about giving back and supporting those who make Fort Saskatchewan a better place. For the past two years, the Chamber has partnered with the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank, offering free admission to folks who bring a non-perishable food donation.

While the Annual Trade Show & Market and Christmas Marketplace differ in tone and timing, they both serve the same fundamental purpose: to foster a thriving local economy by connecting businesses with the community. The Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce has long been a champion of local commerce, and these two events perfectly

reflect its commitment to creating opportunities for businesses to grow and thrive.

The spring Trade Show showcases the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit that defines the business community, while the Christmas Marketplace taps into the festive joy of the holiday season, encouraging residents to shop local and support small businesses. Together, these events help build a stronger, more connected Fort Saskatchewan region, creating lasting relationships between business owners and residents.

As the new year approaches, anticipation builds for both the 2025 Annual Trade Show & Market and the Christmas Marketplace. The Chamber of Commerce is already hard at work preparing to make both events bigger and better than ever, ensuring that they continue to serve as cornerstones of the Fort Saskatchewan community.

Whether you’re a business owner looking to make connections at the Trade Show or a family eager to start your holiday shopping at the Christmas Marketplace, there’s no better way to celebrate the spirit of Fort Saskatchewan than by attending

these hallmark events. Keep an eye on the Chamber’s calendar and be sure to join the fun—whether in the spring or during the festive months of November, these events are not to be missed.

Both the Annual Trade Show & Market and the Christmas Marketplace are perfect opportunities to connect with the community, support local businesses, and celebrate all that makes Fort Saskatchewan a wonderful place to live and work. We look forward to welcoming you to these unforgettable events in 2025! l

The 40th Annual Business Awards

The Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce hosted its prestigious 40th Annual Business Awards in October, celebrating the spirit of entrepreneurship, innovation, and community involvement that drives the local economy. The event, held at the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hall, brought together entrepreneurs, community leaders, and business owners to honour the best in the region. As the Chamber marked four decades of the awards, the evening reflected both the history and the future of Fort Saskatchewan’s business community.

With a packed room of over 150 guests, the night was full of excitement and anticipation. The Chamber has long been an advocate for local businesses, and this annual event stands as a reminder of the talent, innovation, and dedication that exist within the district.

The awards ceremony highlighted the achievements of local businesses across a wide range of categories. This year’s awards spanned multiple categories, with each winner demonstrating remarkable growth, community impact, or a commitment to customer service. Among the night’s highlights was the announcement of the new People’s Choice Award, which went to The Atlantic Kitchen, a company recognized for its outstanding customer service and community involvement.

The mighty dredge: Pioneering change in the dredging industry

At Canada Pump and Power (CPP) Corporation, we are committed to redefining the dredging industry—not only in Canada but across the globe. With the launch of the Mighty Dredge, we’re proud to showcase our mission: We will be the best and easiest solution for dive, pump, barge, and dredge needs for all of our existing and future clients. This isn’t just a statement; it’s a promise that drives everything we do.

WHY DREDGING MATTERS

Dredging is vital for maintaining safe navigation in our waterways, enhancing ecosystems, and ensuring the operational efficiency of ports and harbors. Yet, traditional dredging methods often come with challenges, including high labour costs, safety risks, and lengthy project timelines. The Mighty Dredge aims to change all that.

INTRODUCING THE MIGHTY DREDGE

The Mighty Dredge is more than just another piece of equipment; it’s an advanced, autonomous solution designed to streamline operations with a focus on safety

and efficiency. It incorporates remote monitoring, data collection, analytics, and artificial intelligence. Here are some key features that set the Mighty Dredge apart:

1. Autonomous Operation: The Mighty Dredge can work continuously without needing a full crew on-site. This not only reduces labour costs but also minimizes safety risks associated with hazardous environments.

2. Remote Monitoring: Equipped with advanced sensors and a GPS system, the Mighty Dredge allows operators to monitor its performance in real-time, from a safe distance. Alerts and notifications are sent directly to operators’ phones, ensuring quick responses to any issues that may arise.

3. Cost Efficiency: Clients can expect up to a 30 per cent reduction in operational costs compared to traditional dredging methods. This cost savings stems from lower labour requirements and increased efficiency.

4. Versatile Design: The Mighty Dredge is customizable to

fit various dredging needs. The 4” model handle solids up to one inch in diameter and operates effectively across different water types and conditions.

5. Environmental Impact: By reducing the need for on-site personnel, the Mighty Dredge minimizes disturbance to the surrounding environment. The autonomous operation also allows for more precise dredging, which protects sensitive ecosystems.

REAL-WORLD IMPACT

Our dredging team has already begun to see the transformative benefits of the Mighty Dredge. This technology has changed our approach to dredging, and we are aiming to complete major projects ahead of schedule while significantly reducing costs and enhancing safety. We also use the mapping and production tools developed as part of the Mighty Dredge alongside our conventional equipment, allowing us to show our clients exactly how the dredge is performing in real time.

The Mighty Dredge uses a 31HP – 975 USGPM @ 50 ft head pump which can handle solids up to one inch in diameter. The Mighty Dredge pump can draw 30 per cent solids when operating at maximum capacity. The

system requires a 480VAC, 3 phase, 60Hz electric power supply for the pump and control systems.

This innovative tool shows our commitment to providing not just equipment but effective solutions that empower our clients to achieve their goals.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE INNOVATION

What truly sets CPP apart is our dedicated team. Our engineers and operators are passionate about creating safe, efficient, and innovative solutions. Jeremy Leonard, CEO of Canada Pump and Power, emphasizes, “Our focus is on making dredging operations safer and more effective for everyone involved. The Mighty Dredge is a culmination of that vision.”

By prioritizing human safety and environmental responsibility, we ensure that our technologies align with the needs of both our clients and the communities they serve.

JOIN THE DREDGING REVOLUTION

We invite you to explore the future of dredging with us. The Mighty Dredge is not just an upgrade; it’s an opportunity to transform how you operate. Whether you’re involved in marine construction, environmental

restoration, or port management, the Mighty Dredge can be a game-changer for your operations.

Dow puts Fort Saskatchewan on world map

Dow’s commitment to its Path2Zero project to build the world’s first netzero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions ethylene and derivatives complex has brought global attention to Alberta’s Industrial Heartland and, more specifically, to the city of Fort Saskatchewan.

ALL SYSTEMS GO

“This is a massive amount of capital, one of the largest ever in the history

of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland,” says Mark Plamondon, Executive Director, Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association (AIHA). “The fact that Dow has chosen Fort Saskatchewan as the location of what will be the world’s first net zero polyethylene manufacturing facility sends a strong signal. It shows to the rest of the world that a leading global company can meet both its economic and

environmental objectives here in Alberta. That’s a strong statement.”

Dow’s USD$6.5 billion project includes building a new ethylene cracker and increasing polyethylene capacity by two million MTA, as well as retrofitting the site’s existing cracker to net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. The company expects the investment to deliver USD$1 billion of EBITDA growth

per year at full run rates over the economic cycle, while decarbonizing 20 per cent of the company’s global ethylene capacity.

The project will also be a boon to Fort Saskatchewan – both the Industrial Heartland region and the city itself.

Plamondon speaks to how the multibillion investment will spur future investment and growth for the area.

“Alberta’s Industrial Heartland is already Canada’s largest hydrocarbon processing region,” he says. “The entire cluster is quite integrated. Having a larger project like this one will only enhance the industrial cluster and increase the competitiveness of the whole region. This will then fuel more economic growth and activity.”

Powering Alberta’s Future, Together

At Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association, we’re more than just an organization—we’re a driving force behind our region’s economic growth and sustainable development.

Who We Are

Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association is an internationally recognized team of experts that drive capital investment into Alberta’s Industrial Heartland (AIH). AIH is a 582km2 region near Edmonton and is one of the world’s most attractive locations for chemical, petrochemical, oil, and gas investment. With $45+ billion in existing capital investment and more than 40 companies, we are providing fuels, fertilizers, power, petrochemicals and more to provincial and global consumers.

The fact that Industrial Heartland is already home to some of the lowest cost ethane feedstocks in the world certainly played a part in Dow’s decision, as did the region’s existing carbon sequestration capability.

The company reports that the Fort Saskatchewan site was selected for its access to highly cost-competitive

natural gas (relative to other regions), as well as cost-advantaged ethane, a key feedstock for ethylene production.

“At full run rates, the site is expected to be one of Dow’s most competitive in the world,” states Dow. “The region also features access to existing CO2 transportation and storage

infrastructure with available capacity to fully support decarbonization of the project. It is also home to a talented workforce.”

COMMUNITY WINS

The Dow project is expected to leverage an additional USD$2 billion of investment from third parties for clean hydrogen, CO2 capture, and other infrastructure assets in the region.

To that end, Linde recently announced that it intends to build a USD$2 billion clean hydrogen and atmospheric gases facility in Fort Saskatchewan, as part of Dow’s Path2Zero Project.

Premier Danielle Smith and Minister of Energy and Minerals Brian Jean say that the Linde project alone will create 750 temporary construction jobs and 60 permanent jobs.

Dow has stated that its Path2Zero Project will create between 4,5005,500 jobs during peak construction and between 400 and 500 full-time jobs once operational.

Additionally, Dow has committed to more than $9 million in community investments. This will include $6.8 million to support the design and construction of the City of Fort Saskatchewan’s new aquatics facility and the Access for Everyone program, the latter of which is to provide equitable access to recreation, culture programs, and city facilities.

More than $2 million of the community investment fund will go toward the Fort Saskatchewan

Nourishment Centre, including $1.2 million for the building fund, additional resources for the building of a community kitchen, and funding for a refrigerated vehicle to help expand delivery services so the most vulnerable residents can more easily access services.

Also included in the community investments is $350,000 to Ducks Unlimited to support conservation efforts for the Prairie Potholes near Lacombe, as well as a $150,000 grant to support STEM and skilled trades education pipelines for Indigenous students.

“These collaborations reflect Dow’s belief that our actions should positively impact the communities

where we operate and the environment we share,” says Don Cameron, Dow Alberta Operations Site Director. “As we continue with our Path2Zero expansion project, we embrace this responsibility and strive to actively create meaningful and positive change to help our communities thrive.”

Dow has been a part of the Fort Saskatchewan area for more than 60 years.

“We are thrilled to see Dow’s continued investment in our community, and we know these partnerships will profoundly impact the lives of residents in Fort Saskatchewan and the surrounding regions,” says Fort Saskatchewan

Mayor Gale Katchur. “We are so proud that Dow has chosen our city for its expansion project, and we look forward to continued growth and prosperity together.”

AIHA’s Plamondon reports that Dow’s investment in the Alberta’s Industrial Heartland has already generated interest from other leading companies.

“There is a substantial opportunity for growth in the region,” he says. “Dow’s decision to locate here shows the world that not only do we have the capacity for carbon capture and sequestration but that this type of technology is not some futuristic idea. It is happening now. And we are leading the way.” l

New Jubilee Recreation Centre project on schedule

This $17.8-million project includes 12,900 additional square feet that will increase the off-ice area by 100 per cent

Located just 15 minutes northeast of Edmonton along the North Saskatchewan River in Alberta, Fort Saskatchewan is a growing community that is seeing significant infrastructure developments aimed at enhancing community amenities.

Currently undergoing modernization with a completion date slated for next summer, the Jubilee Recreation Centre (JRC) is seeing a great deal of change that will be greatly welcomed by residents. The JRC was constructed in 1965 and has had no comprehensive renovations since then.

The $17.8 million project includes 12,900 additional square feet that will increase the off-ice area by a whopping 100 per cent modernizing both the internal and external appearance and function of the facility.

Photo above: The Jubilee Recreation Centre is currently undergroing a $17,8-million modernization with a completion date slated for the summer of 2025.
“ The project is progressing well and remains on schedule and on budget.”

The lobby will be expanded and reconfigured with views into the ice area.

“The project is progressing well and remains on schedule and on budget,” says Grant Schaffer, Director of Fleet, Facilities and Engineering at the City of Fort Saskatchewan. “Delnor Construction is the general contractor. The project involves demolishing and replacing all office areas of the JRC, and all areas are being reconstructed to meet current codes and expectations for a modern arena.”

The project will feature a new main floor, which includes a larger lobby with direct viewing of the ice surface, new concession, new and expanded washrooms, new community meeting room, and an accessible ramp to lower-level change rooms. The change rooms have been

enlarged with seven in total, the addition of two universal change rooms, as well two new expanded referee rooms.

To date, all structural work is complete. Interior concrete block in the change room areas is complete, and mechanical systems are currently being roughed-in with framing of the main floor spaces.

Schaffer says the biggest challenge

was keeping the facility open during the entirety of construction.

“Temporary change rooms and washrooms were brought in to accommodate the users so that the arena could continue to be used. I would also like to thank the user groups for working with us and understanding the short-term inconvenience for the long-term benefits on what will essentially be a new facility when complete.” l

Charting a course to a shared culture of safety

Empowering members through ACSA’s Five-Year Strategy

In a high-risk construction industry, safety is more than just compliance—it’s a shared responsibility.

With over 56,000 member companies, the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA), a memberfocused, industry-funded not-for-profit organization, is Alberta’s largest certifying partner. Recognizing that safety is a collective effort, ACSA works with members and industry experts to foster safety and business

excellence for more than 300,000 construction workers.

Since joining ACSA in 2023, Chief Executive Officer Mark Hoosein has focused on listening to members and understanding the industry’s evolving needs. He and his team are now actioning their plans, helping members reach and exceed their safety goals and adapt to industry changes.

“Our five-year strategic plan is about creating a safer, more supportive environment for our members, their employees and our partners,” Mark explains.

LEADING SAFETY IN A GROWING INDUSTRY

As Alberta experiences growth, the need for new and innovative safety solutions is rising. Mark points to Dow’s Path2Zero expansion project in Fort Saskatchewan, which aims to decarbonize manufacturing facilities while delivering low-emission products. The project will create up to 7,000 jobs during peak construction and approximately 500 full-time jobs once operational.

For ACSA members, projects like these are more than job opportunities—they offer a chance to elevate safety across the industry. ACSA’s strategic plan positions members to stay ahead in safety practices and take full advantage of the province’s growth.

“When our members lead in safety, their businesses thrive. Our members’ success is Alberta’s success. When workers are safe, skilled and confident, businesses, the industry and our province flourish,” Mark says.

TAILORING SUPPORT TO BUILD SUCCESS

Members are at the centre of ACSA’s programs and services. The association continually refines and expands its offerings to ensure members get the support they need, regardless of their business size. At the November 2024 conference, themed Safety Foundations: Constructing a Culture of Excellence, ACSA launched its Certificate of Recognition (COR) and Small Employer Certificate of Recognition (SECOR) modernization initiatives. Through engagement and consultation, ACSA

is improving its flagship COR program to provide ongoing and added value for employers of all sizes. Members can help shape these programs by sharing their input at engage.youracsa.ca.

For those seeking designations like the National Health and Safety Administrator (NHSA) or

National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO), ACSA now offers online proctoring, allowing them to complete exams from anywhere. ACSA also provides various safety training, from webinars to in- person classes. With Instruction by Request (IBR), members receive customized training delivered at their workplace.

In addition to physical safety, members can access resources to navigate psychological safety in the workplace through ACSA’s Psychological Health and Safety webinar series. The series builds on the success of ACSA’s 2023 conference, featuring experts from Alberta Occupational Health & Safety (OHS), the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) and the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC), Opening Minds.

“We’re here to ensure our members are prepared to lead, with safety embedded in every aspect of their business,” Mark says.

As Alberta embraces new technologies and industrial growth, members can rely on ACSA’s commitment to innovative programs and facilitating access to expertise. ACSA and its members are building a safer, stronger future for Alberta’s construction industry.

Nutrien celebrates 40 years in business

The company attributes the site’s success to its dedicated and caring staff

Nutrien’s Fort Saskatchewan Operations recently celebrated a significant milestone and impressive accomplishment—its 40th Anniversary.

Ted Sawchuk, General Manager of the Nutrien Fort Saskatchewan site, says “Our purpose of ‘Feeding the Future’ gives us motivation to continuously improve to make our operations safer, more productive, and more efficient.”

Nutrien’s Fort Saskatchewan

Operations consist of an ammonia and urea plant supplying nitrogen fertilizers to growers throughout Canada. Sawchuk says they have many accomplishments to be proud of over the last four decades, and he attributes the site’s success to the dedicated and caring staff. He says their commitment to safe, sustainable operations and protection of the environment, community, and customers is always top of mind.

“We strive to improve the site, community, and environment. We have increased our production capacity by over 30 per cent, improved our energy efficiency, donated to many worthy causes in our community, and recently remediated an area around our site and planted more than 70,000 trees.”

CHAMBER COLLABORATION

the Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce as they have collaborated on several initiatives together. “Nutrien strives to be an active and contributing member of each community in which we operate to create long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with our community,” says Joelle Tymchuk, Nutrien Site Administrator/ Community Relations and Investment. “The Fort Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce supports community and economic development, which aligns with Nutrien’s philosophy and community relations.”

One great event that Nutrien has sponsored for several years is the Corn Roast at the Chamber’s Farmer’s Market, a cherished community event that brings together residents of Fort

Saskatchewan in a celebration of local agriculture and community spirit.

“Nutrien continues to sponsor the corn roast as we see the benefits of this annual tradition that showcases local produce, promotes a family friendly atmosphere, and community bonding,” says Tymchuk.

“By supporting such events, our company is demonstrating its dedication to corporate social responsibility and community wellbeing. This creates an opportunity for employees to engage with the community and foster goodwill. The Corn Roast strengthens the social fabric of Fort Saskatchewan and, of course, provides an opportunity for attendees to enjoy some corn.”

Nutrien has also provided “Crop Cash” at the Farmer’s Market that

can be used to purchase fresh foods and preserves. This program already existed, but Nutrien and the Chamber collaborated to elevate this idea into something more interactive for the community.

“The program aims to support local farmers and businesses while promoting healthy eating which sparked the idea of gathering recipes from residences in the community. The creation of a cookbook was a natural progression for this project,” explains Tymchuk. She adds that there is room for this project to grow as Nutrien will continue to demonstrate its commitment to the well-being of the communities in which they operate.

Sawchuk was quick to share Nutrien’s vision for the Fort Saskatchewan area over the next few years, “We will continue to maintain our safe and efficient operations in the community, supplying our farmers with the essential nutrients needed to grow their crops and improve the environment in which we operate. We look for further opportunities to grow our business and support the amazing Fort Saskatchewan community that we have been a part of for 40 years.” l
