Casa Loma Casa Loma – where learning comes to life. Casa Loma is one of Toronto’s premier historic attractions. Originally home to Canadian financier, industrialist, and military officer, Sir Henry Pellatt, the castle offers students a unique and interesting way to experience and learn about the early 20th century. Casa Loma allows students to journey into the past. Our educational guided tours will connect students to the concepts of historical thinking through live interactive experience. In 1911, Sir Henry Pellatt engaged noted architect E.J. Lennox to help him realize a lifelong dream, the creation of an Edwardian castle on the top of a hill overlooking Toronto. It took 300 men nearly three years to complete the nearly to 200,000 square foot castle at a cost of $3,500,000 (at the time). Situated on five acres, Casa Loma was the largest private residence in Canada. Sir Henry Pellatt with his wife Lady Mary enjoyed Casa Loma for less than ten years before financial misfortune forced him to abandon his home. Step back into a bygone era at Casa Loma, Canada’s majestic castle. For more information on Casa Loma and our education tours please visit:

We can create a program that meets your group needs. Our programs can help your young students learn about the pulley systems used in indoor rock climbing or enjoy a day of physical education and health. We can create a program to teach your mature students about the engineering behind the sport, the science that helps the climbers stay safe or the kinesiology to discover the physiological, biomechanics, and psychological mechanisms take place when rock climbing. SchoolDirectory.pdf that 1 2018-07-26 8:49 PM Rock climbing is a great sport for everyone, regardless of body type, confidence, or current experience. It is a skill that can help build self-confidence as students surprise themselves at climbing higher than they expected.
We offer over 46 routes with heights varying from 10 to 37 feet.
We have six different bouldering areas, as well as simulated rock faces, chimney climbing, crack climbing, top rope, and lead climbing areas.

Brooks Farms At Brooks Farms, children learn about grain
seeds and their everyday uses, tour the barnyard to see farm animals and their habits, and take a wagon/train ride to see the entire farm operation. They can explore the apple orchard, various fruit, vegetable, and grain fields, the sugar bush, and pick their own fruits and vegetables. For the older children, explore a comparison of rural and urban life based on the unique perspective of farmers and farm life in the 21st century. As well, we will discuss the vast technology changes in farming over the years and investigate environmental issues such as climate change and its immense impact on growing food and healthy living. Our indoor farmers market, café, and bakery are now open. We have also extended our season to include Christmas – with Santa here every weekend in December leading up to Christmas.

NOT YOUR TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM Aspire Climbing’s programs are developmental to guide participants through, the fun, fitness and problem solving that comes naturally in rock climbing. It’s a journey of gaining selfawareness and self-confidence that’s inherit with the challenges and successes experienced through progression in climbing. Learning to overcome fears and how to take risks is a healthy part of life; at Aspire Climbing we provide the facility and the programs where your students have the opportunity to climb outside their comfort zone all while building selfesteem, fitness and character. We combine rock climbing with obstacle racing to challenge and inspire every participant. Students will experience increased body awareness, sharpened motor skills and coordination for healthy growth. A great practice for everyday life… ROCK CLIMBING An exercise of the mind and body, rock climbing is not simply about making it to the top; each climb presents a new challenge to negotiate the best way to achieve success. This valuable learning is important to every child’s development. Students gain the opportunity to: test their problem-solving ability and stretch their minds; and to find creative solutions, allowing them to go further and higher. Our programs guide students through this journey, build better/smarter climbers and in return, these skills translate into how they tackle challenges in life. NINJA WARRIOR Obstacle Racing or Ninja Warrior training is an alternative form of exercise that strengthens the mind / body connection. It’s like playing on one of the most fun, yet challenging playgrounds there are. This is agility training at its best. This form of play helps the body learn proper alignment and movements necessary to stabilize, balance and control dynamic movement. Students participating in Ninja Warrior are challenged to move in non-linear ways which engages a greater number of muscles. They are testing their response time and developing their hand-eye coordination. Our Ninja relay sets the stage
for students to focus on their strengths, while working as part of a team to complete the obstacle course. Participation in the relay is a powerful demonstration of how impactful being self aware can be and how beneficial collaboration really is. ROCK CLIMBING AND NINJA WARRIOR SUPPORT CHARACTER EDUCATION IN ACTION: Positive character attributes are highlighted, modeled and practiced by students involved in the Climbing and Ninja programs. Cooperation, Teamwork, Trust, Attitude, Self-Esteem: Active involvement in these programs inherently builds good character and contributes to the healthy development of attitudinal life skills. In climbing gyms everywhere, you will often see groups of people supporting the efforts of one person scaling the wall. Climbers help each other get to the top by encouraging each other and offering supportive direction from the ground level. Both Rock Climbing and Obstacle racing are individual sports where you set your goals and challenge yourself to push harder. The feeling of reaching your goal is intrinsically rewarding and builds on the idea that inside each of us is the power to achieve.
EXPERIENCE MORE
Aspire Climbing has provided my students with the confidence to not only try new physical activities, but to apply problem-solving skills and set goals along the way. The environment is fun, with many colourful obstacles to explore and tackle. The staff built excellent rapport with the kids and made them feel that they were safe at all times. I took grade 4-7 students to the facility, and each climbing class was adapted to suit the grade level and students involved. They provided me with a guideline to assess the students’ behavior and progression in the program which I found to be very useful. We all enjoyed ourselves very much, thank you Aspire Climbing! - S. That others may live
Touring battlefields and war memorials in Europe gives this retired high school history teacher a sense of gratitude, and the heavy cost of peace. For 31 years I taught high school history in the classrooms of Kent County, and for three and a half years, after retirement, at Canadian College Italy. As you would expect, the courses I taught and the students’ ages varied, but whether the subject was Canadian, American or European history, the Great Wars of the 20th century inevitably played an important part. Coming of age in the turbulent 1960s, starting my teaching career in the early ’70s, and never having to sacrifice precious years of my youth to serve in wartime, I was always conscious of how lucky I was. And the spectre of the Vietnam War, tearing at the fabric of society in the United States, made this feeling even more immediate. So when the subject turned to war, I was always concerned to do the very best I could to help the students understand and appreciate the sacrifices of those young men, so many years ago. We used simulation exercises, read diaries and letters, invited veterans into the classroom to tell their stories, watched grainy, black and white newsreels, and spent countless hours every year organizing meaningful Remembrance Day programs for the school. So I think a creditable job was done. Except for a brief visit to Vimy Ridge in the 1980s, while on a teaching exchange in England, I had never visited the far-away battlefields we had only read and heard about. That began to change during the three and a half years I spent teaching in Italy. The school was located in the town of Lanciano, a short distance from Ortona, where Canadians fought gallantly over Christmas, 1943. The school had always organized a moving Remembrance Day ceremony in the nearby Moro River Canadian War Cemetery, where 1,375 Canadians were laid to rest. An additional 50 graves are unidentified. The program was beautiful, and it brought students to tears when they visited the graves, but what was missing was an understanding of what had actually happened. So for the last three years of my stay, on Nov. 10th we took the entire student body on a day-long tour of all the sites relevant to the Battle of Ortona. Now when visiting the cemetery next day, it was clear the students were even more appreciative of the sacrifices those young men had made. There was a level of emotion that I thought had never been attained in my Canadian classroom. Upon my return to Canada, of all the great experiences that came with living and working in Italy, it was the experience of touring the Ortona battle sites and visiting the Moro River cemetery that moved me the most. Shortly after I returned to Canada, it was my extreme good fortune to go to work for Ellison Travel & Tours, an excellent travel company in Exeter, ON. I started out managing general, cultural and music tours for adults and students to various locations in Europe and soon began helping to design and sell tours. In 2006, with the 90th anniversary of Vimy Ridge on the horizon, and many other similar commemorations looming, owner Doug Ellison suggested we try our hand at battlefield tours. I jumped at the chance. Of the more than 50 tours I have led in the past 14 years, 25 of them have been battlefield tours in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. Most have been student tours, but they have also included regimental tours and tours involving interested adults. I have been to Vimy Ridge many times: In the bright sunshine and in the driving rain; in the early morning hours on Remembrance Day, before the crowds arrived; and with an
BY DENNIS MAKOWETSKY
adult group, late in the day, when the skirl of a lone piper emanated from behind the monument in the waning light. I was among the thousands of pilgrims during the 90th anniversary celebrations. There is no bad time to visit Vimy Ridge, but in my view, if you are fortunate enough to be alone with the beautiful monument, reading as many of the 11,285 names inscribed on it as you can, and standing beside the elegant statue of Mother Canada, overlooking the Douai Plain, you will experience Vimy Ridge as few are able to do. There were many visits to Beaumont Hamel, where the heroic Royal Newfoundland Regiment fought on July 1, 1916, the first day of the tragic Battle of the Somme. Newfoundland lost a generation of young men during the First World War, and Beaumont Hamel was perhaps the worst disaster of all. About 800 soldiers from Newfoundland went into battle that morning, and only 68 could answer the roll call the next day. Among the casualties were 14 sets of brothers, who lost their lives in half an hour on a patch of land that today lies untouched from the battle more than 100 years ago. Standing on that battlefield, one can only imagine the horror those young men felt that day. Juno Beach is another staple of battle tours in France. The Juno Beach Centre, in Courseulles-sur-Mer, is marvellous to visit. Standing on the beaches where Canadian soldiers landed on D-Day, and touring the bunkers where they sought shelter, is an unforgettable experience. But etched in my memory is the image of a young Grade 10 girl, a student with a group I led, as she accompanied a veteran of the Queen’s Own Rifles infantry regiment in laying a wreath on their monument on the beach in Bernières-sur-Mer. Two years later, the same student, a senior now, travelling with another school group, returned to the same spot and laid a single rose in honour of the same veteran who had passed away in the interim. Then there are the many memorable stops on an Italian battle tour. One of them is the mountaintop above the Sicilian town of Assoro, where the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment (also known as the the Hasty Ps) scaled an impossible cliff in the dead of night to surprise the unsuspecting enemy at dawn. Among the attackers that morning was a young Farley Mowat, who became one of Canada’s best-known writers of the 20th century. Five months later, Mowat became shell shocked outside of Ortona, overcome by the battle anxiety he called “the Worm.” I learned many lessons in my travels to the battlefields of Europe. Many are the obvious ones relating to the details of the countless battles. But I also learned that, as important as Vimy Ridge and Juno Beach are, they perhaps distract attention from the many other incredible struggles Canadians endured on the battlefields. Only by taking the time to travel to sites, many of them far off the beaten track, can we truly begin to understand the sacrifices made by our young soldiers. And while we rightfully honour those who paid the supreme sacrifice, we need to also remember those who survived the conflagrations, only to return home to the cities and rural areas of the country, like ghosts, never able to shake what Mowat described as “the Worm.” As I travel the countryside with groups, I often wonder out loud: “How many 73-year-old men in the world, like me, can say they have never had to fire a gun?” I shall never forget that it is because of the sacrifices made by the men found in the pristine Commonwealth war cemeteries, and by those who gave up the formative years of their lives, that my life has been so fortunate.
