elcome to the Manitoba Dental Association’s 2018 Annual Convention, All About the Team, as we are pleased to host you and your team at the RBC Convention Centre in downtown Winnipeg. This year’s convention truly celebrates the entire dental team, with a broad array of speakers and social activities sure to pique your interest. With a great nod of appreciation to the organizational skills of committee chair Dr. Pat Kmet and her tireless team of convention committee members, the 134th annual convention will kick off on Friday with a continental breakfast among the booths of the trade show, where you and your team can mix and mingle with co-workers, colleagues and industry members alike. Take a bit of time to enjoy a cup of coffee while you wander through the displays to preview what’s new and exciting in terms of technology, equipment and materials. With coffee and a bite under your belt, it’s time to head into an educational session: choose from clinical scientific sessions exploring endodontic, periodontic, or prosthodontic topics, or head towards the “soft sciences” topics of understanding people and the customer service aspects of dentistry. Take a CPR course, or wander through the University of Manitoba’s Research Day presentations and student poster competition. Delve into the topics of addiction and smoking cessation. But, pace yourself – there’s a second day of sessions to explore again Saturday! More tips on infection control, people skills, dental materials, and technology await you. Wherever your interests lie, we are featuring a variety of speakers including both internationally recognized and homegrown talent. After you’ve quenched your thirst for knowledge during the daytime educational sessions, please join us for some social R&R each evening. We will ease your whole team into the weekend with a Team Appreciation cocktail party on Friday night. The University of Manitoba’s Dental Alumni Association also welcomes you to drop by and visit with your classmates at the trade shpw cocktail party. I look forward to welcoming you to Saturday night’s President’s Gala, where dinner will be followed with an evening of dancing to the lively sounds of the Danny Kramer Event Band. So plan to come on out and celebrate with your team. Our yearly convention is a terrific opportunity to drop by and visit with the many people who make up our dental community. I look forward to welcoming you all this January in Winnipeg, where “It’s All About the Team”!

The MDHA is pleased to continue the tradition of joining fellow oral health care professionals for this annual event, where members of the dental community have the opportunity to attend excellent continuing education presentations by both local and renowned international speakers. Member engagement is an important aspect of the MDHA, and we are pleased to offer exclusively to our members a networking opportunity on Friday, January 26th, from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. This informal event will give our members the opportunity to engage with their elected board members, connect with the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association through the Manitoba CDHA representative and enjoy connecting with colleagues from around the province. We look forward to welcoming keynote speaker, Dr. Charl Els. His presentations on “Tobacco Cessation” and “Drugs of Abuse with Dental Health Relevance” are highly anticipated and are open to everyone. Dr. Els is an engaging, dynamic speaker and we are sure that everyone who attends will find his sessions informative and beneficial. The MDA Annual Meeting and Convention is always a highlight during the cold Winnipeg winters. A great number of people work hard to make it memorable, so be sure to enjoy every minute of it! he old adage, “there is no I in TEAM,” holds true for most workplaces, including the dental office. An old African proverb commonly used to praise the value of teamwork goes like this: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go farther, go together”. Therefore, this year our convention celebrates the dental team, from the front of the office to the back and everybody in between. I welcome you to the 134th Annual Meeting and Convention held January 26–27 at the RBC Convention Centre. Under the theme, All About the Team, this meeting will offer a platform to learn and exchange ideas for ALL dental team members. Whether you are seeking education, product knowledge or entertainment, our convention has a little something for everyone. The program will once again provide continuing education opportunities for the dental team through dynamic scientific and clinical programs to smaller “training camps”. Our impressive roster of speakers on Friday includes: Drs. Lee Ann Brady, Manor Haas and Bobby Birdi. The MDAA has lined up Chris Scappatura and the MDHA is highlighting Dr. Charl Els. As well, Sandie Baillargeon will speak on customer service in the dental office. As always, we will be featuring our oral research presentations by the dental college students. There is truly something for everyone. Saturday’s highlights include: Drs. Ron Kaminer, Chris Wyatt, Shannon Mills, Patti Ling, Chris Cottick and Julie Pfeffer. We will feature Rita Zamora who will be speaking on social media in the dental office, and Todd Nadeau will focus on human resources issues. Our new technical series will focus on topics of interest to the dental technicians, who will be participating in our convention for the first time. This series of three mini lectures is open to all! Let’s not forget the CPR and CDSPI courses that are offered annually. New this year at the convention will be the Continuing Education Scan Card which will increase efficiency for uploading CE hours. Be sure to download our convention app and find us on Facebook. We have made changes to the exhibit hall. Exhibiting companies will demonstrate and showcase the latest innovations, products and services in the dental industry in a much larger space. We hope to transform the hall into a hub for networking, education and fun, with a few surprises thrown in. The Friday night Team Appreciation Cocktail Party will provide an opportunity to visit with our exhibitors, while enjoying food and beverages. It’s a perfect time and place to reconnect with classmates, colleagues and friends. Bring the whole team and join us from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the exhibit hall. We invite you on Saturday night to the President’s Ball honouring Dr. Catherine Dale. It is sure to be an elegant evening with entertainment by the Danny Kramer Event Band. Be sure to get your tickets; it will be a night you won’t forget! The 2018 MDA meeting is YOUR meeting, so take advantage of all there is being offered. I look forward to seeing you there. occlusion in everyday dentistry Friday, January 26 • 2 pm – 4:30 pm
Dentistry is changing at a rapid pace. Being successful and efficient is about staying on top of the newest trends and clinical tips. In this program, Dr. Brady will present the top clinical tips and techniques she is teaching. Some are old tried and true approaches that remain successful, while others introduce brand-new materials and approaches. Tips will span the areas of prevention, posterior composites and indirect all ceramics. Learning objectives: • Caries and perio prevention; • Posterior composite efficiency and effectiveness; • Successful bonding and cementation; and • Improved posterior all-ceramic restorations.
Dr. Lee Ann Brady Have you ever wondered why, after prepping a second molar for a crown, the occlusal of the prep is in contact with the opposing tooth? Every time we alter the chewing surface of a tooth we impact the entire stomatognathic system. Often, the patient adapts to these changes. But when they don’t it can jeopardize the restoration, the other teeth, and can cost us the patient’s trust, not to mention our time. In this session we will explore the challenges of occlusion we face everyday in a restorative practice and look at how we can utilize this information to make our dentistry more predictable and help our patients stay healthy and comfortable. Learning objectives: • Centric relation; • Signs of occlusal disease; • Anterior guidance; and • Managing occlusion in a restorative practice.

drugs of abuse with dental relevance Friday, January 26 • 2 pm – 4:30 pm
The cigarette has been described as the deadliest artifact in the history of civilization. Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death and disease globally, and it contributes to six of the eight leading non-communicable diseases. Tobacco use may also include the disease of nicotine addiction. Most tobacco users know the power of addiction and want to quit. Dental practice in Canada offers a unique and substantial opportunity to reduce oral disease, save lives, improve quality of life, and reduce the excess health care burden of tobacco on society. For a variety of reasons, dental practitioners are ideally situated to offer tobacco cessation interventions. Evidence-based treatment consists of multimodal, longitudinal interventions consisting of pharmacotherapy and counseling. The body of evidence supports dental professionals using brief interventions, based on the five As approach, integrated into daily dental practice. Compensation continues to be a significant barrier in some settings, and additional support and educational opportunities may improve outcomes for patients. Current evidence tells a vivid and chilling story of the dire and urgent need to support tobacco cessation in our patients. Learning objectives: • Understand foundational concepts in tobacco addiction and tobacco control; • List the adverse health effects, including oral and periodontal, related to tobacco consumption; and • Describe the 5A approach, including principles of evidence-based treatment.
Dr. Charles Els The problem of substance abuse continues as a major issue in society and has become an area of major focus for health care professionals and disciplines. The health impact of substances of abuse is widespread and potentially lethal, with several substances having devastating consequences on oral health. Despite the lack of rigorous empirical evidence in support of its benefits, the use of marijuana for medical purposes has been available in Canada for many years, and it is about to be legalized. Canadian youth are already the highest consumers of marijuana on the planet, and despite decades of prohibition, marijuana remains the most commonly used illicit substance in Canada. The potential mental and physical health consequences, as well as oral and periodontal consequences of this commonly used substance are considered widespread, serious and preventable. This session will focus on the most salient drugs of abuse, relevant to dental practice. Learning objectives: • Appreciate the foundational information on substances of abuse, and historical events leading up to the imminent cannabis legislative changes in Canada; • List the oral and periodontal adverse effects related to substances of abuse; and • Describe evidence-based principles of care in treating addiction.
Dr. Charl Els is a psychiatrist, addiction specialist, and medical review officer. Dr. Els is in private practice in Edmonton, Alberta and serves on the ACOEM Guideline Committee and regularly conducts assessments on employees in safety-sensitive positions. He sits on the University of Alberta’s Health Research Ethics Board as well as on the advisory board for Physicians Against Forced Organ Harvesting.

Dr. Tom Dudney
In today’s society, tooth wear is more prevalent than ever, and it is therefore incumbent upon the entire dental team to be well versed in recognizing the clinical signs of wear while understanding the importance of prevention when possible and the restorative options when necessary. This half-day lecture will illustrate the different types of tooth wear with clinical examples, and demonstrate a systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment. Learning objectives: • Recognize the clinical signs of intrinsic and extrinsic erosion; • Office protocols to help patients prevent and/or treat acid erosion; • Recognize the clinical signs of horizontal and vertical wear patterns; • Designing an occlusal scheme that fits the grinding patterns of the patient; • Bite opening vs. crown lengthening vs. orthodontic intrusion to gain space for restorations; • The importance of an interdisciplinary team in treating wear cases; and • A systematic approach in the treatment of simple and complex wear cases.
Sometimes the restorative dentist encounters clinical situations that are out of the ordinary and can often be difficult to plan. This lecture will examine several such cases in order to explore treatment options and develop treatment plans. Treatment results will be demonstrated along with helpful clinical tips on: material selection, how to determine incisal edge position, intra-oral composite mockups, opening bites, taking CR records, avoiding biologic width violations, fabricating and evaluating provisional restorations, multiple unit adhesive cementation, bonding to porcelain in the mouth, and fine tuning occlusal adjustments. Learning objectives are to explore treatment options and examine clinical results for: • Traumatic avulsion of permanent incisors; • The dark central incisor; • The severely worn dentition; • Class III anterior crossbite; • The gummy smile; • The appliance-dependent patient; • The cleft lip/palate patient; and • The aging face.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Adult General Dental Programs located on C-3 of the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) are available as support to the dental community of Manitoba, but these programs must be accessed correctly to ensure best patient care. The OMFS program provides an on-call head and neck trauma and major infection services and accepts care of major infection directly from the emergency departments of various hospitals inside and outside the city of Winnipeg. They also take referrals regarding trauma and major infection directly from the dental community. As well, the OMFS program provides a full range of other major and minor OMFS services, and patients can be directly referred to the program for treatment. The Adult General Dental Special Needs Program at the HSC provides general dental treatment for patients who are either mentally, physically or medically compromised, on a referral basis. This lecture will discuss proper appropriate patient selection and referral processes to help facilitate a patient’s treatment at the HSC, as well as give the private practice dental community of Manitoba information on how best to ensure that their patients are referred correctly and in a timely manner. Learning objectives: • What specific services does C-3 provide? • Who is a candidate for referral? • How do I as a dentist or specialist facilitate referral and treatment of a patient in a timely manner to ensure the best patient care?

life after dentistry Saturday, January 27 • 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm Mr. Ron Haik, Mr. Mike Tyler, Ms. Renata Whiteman The number-one complaint about the non-financial drawbacks of retirement is boredom. But, it doesn’t have to be that way because achieving a fulfilling retirement can be planned for. CDSPI is pleased to present the Life After Dentistry workshop where you will learn how to create a non-financial retirement plan, hear about real-life retirement income case studies and how to assess your malpractice and other insurance needs after transitioning out of full-time practice. Attendees will receive a complimentary copy of the book, Life After Dentistry, by life goal planning expert, Dr. Alan Roadburg. This book and the workshop program, are based on the experiences and recommendations of over 250 retired Canadian dentists on how to plan for a fulfilling life after practicing dentistry full time.
Mr. Ron Haik is vice-president of Investment Advisory Services, CDSPI. Haik leads a national team of Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) professionals who serve the Canadian dental community with comprehensive financial planning solutions. Critical to Haik’s role is the fund management selection and oversight of the CDSPI family of 36 investment funds and private wealth management service.
Mr. Mike Tyler, CFP, FMA, joined CDSPI Advisory Services Inc. in 2017 as an investment planning advisor for the Manitoba region, providing expertise in financial wealth management solutions exclusively for the needs of dental professionals. He provides dentists with comprehensive financial planning advice that addresses their personal and professional considerations in the areas of tax, retirement, estate, investment and wealth transfer.
Ms. Renata Whiteman, BSc, is a senior advisor for CDSPI. She will present the concept of insurance as a critical factor in helping you manage risk effectively. The discussion will cover potential risks and the strategies to put in place to protect dentists in three key areas: your personal financial well being and ensuring your loved ones are protected from financial hardship; ensuring your practice and your staff can carry on in the event that your practice cannot operate; and, highlighting best practices to protect yourself from an unforeseen malpractice claim.

Who You Gonna Call? Tragedies happen to people we hear about on the news, to family, and friends By Dr. Peter Doig ragedies can happen to dentists. I am living proof. A bicycle accident ended my career as a practising general dentist. After my accident, I asked my wife what she would have done with my practices if I had been killed. She replied that she would have called my accountant and lawyer. When I asked our advisors what they would have done about my two busy dental practices, they could only think of contacting the Manitoba Dental Association (MDA) to see if they could help. Most dental practices in Manitoba are sole proprietorships and are particularly vulnerable if the dentist has a career-ending accident or health complication. There are vehicles available for partnerships and group practices to lessen the impact of a tragedy and maintain the value of the practice, but not all practitioners take advantage of them. In my experience, most dentists have done some planning for difficult circumstances. They have insurance – life, disability, office overhead – and they have a will. However, it is likely that their most valuable asset is their dental practice, so what happens with it when tragedy strikes? Planning for a tragedy is not a process that many people relish, but it is a necessary part of strategic and financial planning. Relying on a lawyer and accountant is not a plan because most of them are not intimately familiar with dental practices. They do not know the value of your practice, nor do most know how to appraise it. More importantly, they do not know how to enlist the help of locums to maintain your practice, how to transition your practice, or how to market it. Here are a few strategies that a dentist can employ that will make their response to a tragedy quicker and more effective.
T
Know what your practice is worth. An appraisal by a reputable firm will give you a current value of your practice. An appraisal can be updated every few years with minimal effort and cost, and will save time if tragedy occurs. It is a necessary resource to transition a practice, but also is available to defend insurance claims if it becomes necessary. Develop a relationship with an appraisal/marketing firm. An ongoing relationship establishes a resource that you or your estate can call on in an emergency for assistance with managing and transitioning your practice. Leave instructions. An ace in the pocket is of no use if no one knows which pocket it is in. Make sure your spouse, lawyer, accountant, and financial planner know who your contact is for appraisal and marketing. Sole practitioners – review your lease. Negotiate a clause in your lease that protects you from a careerending injury or illness. The clause would allow cancellation of the lease for medical reasons with a specified notification period. Partners and groups – use the vehicles available to you. Properly constructed partnership agreements and cross-insurances that can be activated in emergency situations will protect the practice, the partners and their families in case of tragedy. Tragedy is not something most people like to consider, but it happens. Proper planning will protect your investment and gives you and your family peace of mind. Dr. Peter Doig is a long-time practising dentist and past president of the Canadian Dental Association, Manitoba Dental Association and the Northern Manitoba Dental Society. In 2012, Doig was involved in a hit-and-run cycling accident and was forced to step back from active practice. He now holds a real estate licence in Manitoba and an Accredited Commercial Professional designation, and, with ROI Corporation, assists dentists in the appraisal and sale of their practices.

The new system draws on Garrison’s more than 20 years of sectional matrix leadership to produce their most comprehensive and easy-to-use system. The three-ring system consists of a short (blue), tall (orange) and dentistry’s first wide-preparation (green) separator rings. All three incorporate Garrison’s exclusive Soft-Face™ silicone tips for flash reduction and Ultra-Grip™ retention extensions that eliminate ring “spring-off”. Five sizes of ultra-thin, dead-soft non-stick sectional matrix bands have the addition of a Grab-Tab™ on the occlusal edge to simplify band placement and removal. These are coupled with four sizes of Garrison’s awardwinning Composi-Tight® 3D Fusion™ Ultra-Adaptive wedges. These wedges feature soft “fins” that smoothly adapt matrix bands to tooth irregularities and prevent wedge back out. In another industry first, Garrison has engineered a drop-forged stainless-steel ring placement forceps that make ring placement significantly easier over the largest of molars regardless of hand size or strength. Colour coded and conveniently organized, the Composi-Tight® 3D Fusion™ Sectional Matrix System also has a complete selection of refills available.
