The Northern Regional Construction Association was looking forward to celebrating many things in 2020 and 2021; however, our industry, like so many others, was affected by the global pandemic. Although in our plus-50 years in the northern region of British Columbia as the voice of the construction industry, we’ve never encountered anything like COVID-19. Indeed, it seems that amidst the global pandemic, our members and community leaders adapted through difficult times to ensure safety of their workers and meeting the continued need of construction activities. As an organization, we continue to build on the strengths of our partnerships to further inspiration, support and resilience. As we all navigate the uncertain future brought on by COVID-19, there is one thing we know with certainty: our collective focus remains on the key issues affecting the construction industry. To that end, it’s been important that we keep our attention on long-term planning and innovation that provides the construction industry a sense of steadiness and pride, we continually focus our ongoing efforts in NRCA to boost advocacy on key issues such as prompt payment and consistent fair and open bidding practices in the public sector. Construction procurement in B.C. continues to shift to the activity of pursuing strategic opportunities for a business or organization, identifying new markets for products or services, or cultivating partnerships with others. The new BidCentral platform implemented in mid-2020 continues to support immediate access to public and private projects throughout B.C. In B.C., the level of public sector projects underway coupled with proposed projects is valued at $125BN, and the major projects in Northern B.C. account for $57BN or 42 per cent of that total. The construction and operations of the major projects, such as LNG Canada, Site C Dam and Coastal Gaslink, continually to generally significant economic and social benefits through out Northern B.C. through job creation, economic development and ancillary infrastructure to support the demand of workers in the region. Your professional team at the NRCA office continues to serve you well, and to provide the much-needed services and programs for members as possible to ensure we got it right. Thank you to our members and partners for their continued support and desire to engage in your association. As we look to the end of a long and difficult time in our lives, it’s important to remain vigilant and safe. l

Established in 1978, JEN COL has completed hundreds of construction projects across Western Canada and the Territories. in the middle of winter, so McKenzie and her team installed a hoarding and heating system in order to continue working without too many disruptions. “We knew that there were heavy yearly snowfalls in Quesnel, so we built a canopy system to keep the snow out of the construction,” McKenzie explains. “Typically, when you’re doing work in winter, you use ground thaw. You’d have to heat the ground and use tarps. People would have to shovel and heat the ground again.” The endless cycle of shoveling out and reheating led to a tenting system over the nine-metre concrete pads, but that wasn’t good enough. Eventually, JEN COL created a system to cover the entire area, making the open trench 12 feet wide to construct the tents over. They worked 200 feet at a time, heating each end and one in the middle, while running fans to allow the heat to circulate within the tented area. As a result, the employees were able to work through the winter weather with little impact from outside conditions. “The canopy system kept the snow out of the construction trenches for the

BCCA Employee Benefit Trust supports construction workers’ mental health The British Columbia Construction Association Employee Benefit Trust (BCCAEBT) says it’s about time that mental health receives the same level of recognition and importance as physical health. Established over 53 years ago, the BCCA Employee Benefit Trust is an initiative started by a group of employers that wanted to cover their employees that weren’t on a union benefits plan, according to Arthur Chung, chief executive officer of the Trust. As a result, they created a fund that paid out health expenses incurred by those employees and their families. In 2004, the fund became a health and welfare trust. Eventually, the British Columbia Construction Association (BCCA) passed on the management of the Trust to a handful of employee benefit firms. In 2009,
